Manchester Pride, a large-scale music event with huge headliners and a packed schedule filled with music, dance and drag performances, returned last weekend. The city was filled with colour and thousands of people turned up to celebrate in Gay Village. But this year, Manchester Pride also faced fresh criticism over its relationship with Booking.com, a key sponsor of the festival who have faced criticism for listing rooms in the occupied West Bank, and many, including performers, withdrew from attending the festival. The involvement of big corporate sponsors like Booking.com, and the direction that Pride has taken more broadly, becoming more like a festival than anything resembling its revolutionary roots, has raised a crucial question: should Pride be a party or a protest? Mollie sits down with our new editor, Shannon Keating, to discuss.Recommendations:Alt Pride Festival 2024, Platt Fields Market Garden, 7th and 8th September - tickets hereShould Manchester Pride be a party or a protest? Today's conversation is coming to you in a bit of a different format in that Britt was recently interviewed on the Unmasked & Open Hearted podcast where Shannon Keating hosted her for an unforgettable conversation about Britt's recent journey through pregnancy and motherhood – and Britt felt it was important to also host the conversation here on this channel too. In what ended up being a quite powerful conversation, Britt opened up about the various experiences she had to navigate on her journey into and now through, motherhood. The two spoke about miscarriage, pregnancy, postpartum mental health, identity shifts, and being present with ourselves and our children. Plus, Britt also shared her perspective (with privilege) as to her choice to still not being back with her work, 8 months after giving birth. This episode also dives into: Living multiple lifetimes within one lifetime The mother's physical, emotional, and spiritual journey Healing and recovery after giving birth Harmonizing the divine feminine and divine masculine roles A snapshot of the birth journey Honoring, prioritizing, and communicating our needs Modeling presence and being fully available for your child Simple, strategic ways to fill yourself up as a new mother For more fun stuff follow the links below: CLICK HERE for Discount Codes + Favorite Products SAY HI on Instagram @thebritolson SAY HI on TikTok @thebrittolson Learn more about BabesRising babesrising.co or @babes_rising Listen to Unmasked and Open Hearted LEARN MORE and stay in touch - thebrittolson.com
On this episode of DTD, I (Vinny) sat down with Shannon Keating, host of the Unmasked and Openhearted podcast. Shannon interviewed me, but this was indeed just an openhearted conversation between two curious souls. We touched on topics I haven't talked about this openly before, such as body image and dealing with pain. This was also my chance to discuss my greatest passions: writing and travel. We dove in deep on each topic, discussing the experiences which have defined me. It's a vulnerable and beautiful episode, and after two and a half hours, I left feeling uplifted, light, and joyful. Much love fam! “It’s not my job to make you a better man” — Jenny Schecter Whew girl, that is the truth! And there’s a whole lot more truths (and lies) in the second season of The L Word. We recap the love triangles—Bette/Tina/Helena; Dana/Tonya/Alice; and Jenny/Carmen/Shane—as well as some dark truths about our beloved L.A. queer women. We explore the rubble left in Bette and Tina’s explosive breakup—and Tina’s pregnancy; Kit’s alcoholism; Jenny’s traumatic childhood; Shane’s inability to just commit; and a super gross voyeurism/lesbian fantasy plot by Jenny and Shane’s roommate Mark Wayland. We also process some of the season’s lighter (albeit, weirder) moments: Jenny’s Judaic strip tease, Alice and Dana awkward first hook up for the first time, some annoying whispering added in post-production, and a golden shower of sorts.Episode notes and extras:Feminist scholar Laura Mulvey’s bible on the male gazeThe L Word came out in 2004; in real life, it would have taken Bette and Tina four more years to get legally married in L.A.The coming out haircut is still a thingThe super creepy Mark Wayland is played by Eric Lively—Blake Lively’s brother!BuzzFeed’s Shannon Keating recently braved the Olivia cruise, the notorious travel company for queer women, and proceeded to blow up her lifeIt’s here! Episode 43- Chasing Amy Well y'all, we had to do it sometime. This week, Sarah and Alicia discuss the 1997 bro movie with a lesbian character, Chasing Amy. Tune in to hear some complaints! But also some actual discussion! The main thing is that no one likes Ben Affleck, can we all agree? And even though this movie is Lesbianism for Bros 101, the character of Alyssa actually has some agency, which is cool. Enjoy, queers! In episode 25 we discuss Lee Kofman’s Imperfect. A blend of memoir and cultural critique, Kofman’s Imperfect, which in a neat trick of typography could also read as I’m Perfect, considers our conceptions of physical perfection and asks what it means to live in a body that differs from the norm. Thanks to Affirm Press and Lee for sending us these copies Imperfect.Show NotesImperfect review: Lee Kofman's examination of bodies and the self: https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/books/imperfect-review-lee-kofmans-examination-of-bodies-and-the-self-20190207-h1aywg.htmlTali Lavi reviews 'Imperfect: How our bodies shape the people we become' by Lee Kofman: https://www.australianbookreview.com.au/abr-online/archive/2019/239-march-2019-no-409/5350-tali-lavi-reviews-imperfect-how-our-bodies-shape-the-people-we-become-by-lee-kofmanImperfect: How Our Bodies Shape the People We Become: https://www.booksandpublishing.com.au/articles/2018/10/25/117820/imperfect-how-our-bodies-shape-the-people-we-become-lee-kofman-affirm-press/Lee Kofman Imperfect: https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/culture/books/2019/02/28/imperfect/15502356007449Recommendations Fi:The 7am Podcast: https://7ampodcast.com.au/Minor Monuments by Ian Maleney: https://www.tramppress.com/product/preorder-minor-monuments/Kirby:Always Be My Maybe: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7374948/Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler: https://www.readings.com.au/products/16476164/dinner-at-the-homesick-restaurantNeve:The Time I Went On A Lesbian Cruise And It Blew Up My Entire Life by Shannon Keating:https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.buzzfeednews.com/amphtml/shannonkeating/lesbian-cruiseGood Omens: https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1869454/Contact Us:Twitter: @litcanonballInstagram: @literarycanonballFind us on Facebook at Literary Canon BallEmail: literarycanonball@gmail.com
In this episode, Niki, Neil, and Natalia discuss the recent passing of two major figures: political historian Alan Brinkley and socialite fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt, and the historical significance of a viral Buzzfeed essay about attending a lesbian cruise. Support Past Present on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/pastpresentpodcast Here are some links and references mentioned during this week’s show: Columbia political historian Alan Brinkley – a Ph.D. advisor to Neil and Niki and favorite undergraduate professor of Natalia – has died. Niki recommended Alan Brinkley: A Life in History, a collection of essays by some of his students, including Niki. Neil discussed Brinkley’s influential 1994 article in the American Historical Review, “The Problem of American Conservatism.” Natalia recommended David Greenberg’s reflection in TIME on Brinkley’s legacy. Heiress and fashion trailblazer Gloria Vanderbilt has died. Niki referred to this Washington Post article about the custody trial that defined Vanderbilt as a “poor little rich girl.” Natalia noted how trailblazing the commercials for her jeans Shannon Keating’s Buzzfeed essay about her experience on a lesbian cruise operated by Olivia Travel has gone viral. Natalia cited David K. Johnson’s book Buying Gay. In our regular closing feature, What’s Making History: Natalia recommended a new documentary, The Lavender Scare. Neil discussed the Orlando Sentinel’s editorial, “Our Orlando Sentinel Endorsement for 2020: Not Donald Trump.” Niki shared P.R. Lockhart’s Vox article, “Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates Gives Mitch McConnell a Thorough History Lesson on Reparations.”

The indie rock band Scratchy Blanket were formed by married couple Chloe Hodgkins and Shannon Keating about 4 years ago. Lead vocalist Keating has found being in a band a helpful way to present herself properly to people. “I was voted most shy my senior year of high school. I was so mad about it because I just always tried to be friend with everyone. I didn't feel shy. I just feel like I didn't enjoy high school and didn't have a lot to say. [For] whatever reason, I appear shy. But being in a band and being able to write my own lyrics and present myself in a way that I chose and I'm comfortable with, that's a good way to show who I really am.” Cats play a big role in Scratchy Blanket's identity as a band. The band agreed to play a local music fest as a motivation to write songs. However, 2 days before the live set, they had not started writing. “And then the cats were just sort of walking around… being cats. We just started writing a song. We wrote three songs that day! I think the first time you hear the songs about the cats, they could be about cats, but you could apply it to people, too. A lot of the feelings I have towards the cats, I would have towards other people.” Listen to the full conversation with Shannon (including much more about the cats!) on The Local 913 Podcast.
