Shaun Bythell. Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear e. Mosab Abu Toha Og svo talaði hún um bækurnar Mémoire d'une Jeune Fille Rangée / Mémoirs of a Dutiful Daughter og La Femme Rompue / A Woman Destroyed e. Today I'm assuming that you are regular listeners. If not, you should definitely listen to last week's episode first. Last Friday we started taking you on a trip to Wigtown in Scotland. Scotland's official 'Booktown', home of Shaun Bythell, author of 'Diary of a Bookseller' and owner of 'The Bookshop'. Well, we are still on this same journey. We've already searched the bookstore extensively, gotten to know the area a bit, met a lot of nice people, but still missed Shaun himself. Today is supposed to be the big day when we meet him. It won't be the last time. Because, like the entire area, there seems to be a very special magic about it and its people. Probably some fairy thing. We have definitely already succumbed to this magic. Nevertheless, it is important to bring some order into your thoughts today. After all, this meeting with Shaun was the original trigger for the whole trip. And many of the questions we want to ask Shaun have been deepened by our first few days. How can it be that a place like Wigtown offers enough space for ten or more bookstores in a region that has fewer inhabitants than our city? How is Shaun today? After his international success as an author. Is he still a bookseller at heart? However. It's not just the questions that are exciting, but also the person. A few pictures say a lot less than the bookstore and the town of Wigtown alone. We are excited and Katha is almost a bit in awe of the moment. What will Shaun say and what kind of person is he really? [THE INTERVIEW] Shaun was fantastic. We still met very often. Also random and spontaneous. We had lunch in his kitchen, drank together and talked about books and authors. Especially about Ian Banks, who he knew himself... Overall, these almost 10 days were a wonderful time. We didn't get far beyond the south of Scotland. But we met great and wonderful people. And we were allowed to breathe in deeply the scent of the books and inhale the fantastic spirit of Scotland. We are eternally grateful for that. Thank you Steve, thank you Nicki, thank you Shaun, thank you Christie, thank you Louann, thank you Katha, thank you everyone! If I have forgotten anyone, I am very sorry and it was certainly not intentional. Just feel for “everyone”! addressed. We hope you guys out there enjoyed this little journey too. We can only advise you to take this journey too. It's definitely worth it. I wish you a nice weekend today. See you soon. Ciao, arrivederci, your Gerd..."

I've already taken you on a trip a few times. Today we're trying that again. This time our goal is quite far away. But again a goal that should be of interest of all of us. It's about books, magic an fantasy. But before we start, there's the little back story... In 2018, a certain Shaun Bythell from Wigtown, Scotland published his first book. In 2019 it was also published in German. With the catchy name “Diary of a Bookseller”. From the beginning there was a lot familiar to me in this book. There are simply endless parallels between all small bookstores. We also sold Shaun's book quite well and I think many of our customers have grown to love it in a similar way as we do. If you haven't read the book, I strongly encourage you to do so. For people who like books and small shops it's a great treat and a wonderful insight into Shaun's life with books. His third book will soon be released in German. We have watched countless of his videos on social networks. I confess, we are fans... Then one day Katha said why don't we just travel to Scotland and visit the man? From that moment it was a done deal. And so we now sit in the car to Calais and look forward to Scotland and the funny bookseller Shean Bythell. Nothing planned. Nothing booked. Just drive off and see what lies ahead. Of course, a few ideas are in our heads. Wigtown is located in the far south of Scotland. In the "Galloway and Dumfries" council area. Whoever we spoke to in advance, we were always encouraged to visit the north of Scotland, the Highlands and the Isle of Skye. Accordingly, we have of course come up with a few possible destinations and a potential route to Inverness, Loch Ness and Isle of Skye. But always only as an option. The premise was Wigtown from the start - and then see how it develops. As you can imagine, we were of course also hoping for a nice story and, if possible, an interview with Shaun Bythell... So we went out to visit this bookshop in Wigtown AND see Scotland. In reality things turned out completely differently. We visited Wigtown and found Scotland RIGHT THERE. Incredibly nice and friendly people, wild and extremely biodiverse nature, lots of culture, of course a whiskey distillery and Scottish beer and even one of the clan seats of the Lowlands. Not far from the scene of Robert the Bruce's first battle against a seemingly far superior English army. But slowly. From the beginning... So we sit in the car to Calais and take the classic ferry to Dover. Then past London, Birmingham and Liverpool to the south of Scotland. Unfortunately, when we arrive in Wigtown and first visit Shaun's bookshop, he is on his way. We can already see our chances dwindling. Nevertheless, we have a nice conversation with the bookseller Nicki - no, not the Nicki from the books - but one of the current employees in The Bookshop. And this Nicki is an incredibly nice and helpful person, as it quickly turns out. After a few minutes of conversation about our concerns, some books and our non-existent plans, she gets on the phone and calls a certain "Steve". He's supposed to be a nice guy and have exactly what we need... And so it happened that we postponed our conversation with Shaun Bythell until Monday. But instead were allowed to set up camp for the night beneath the Tower of Sorbie. Stephen Hanna is the guardian of the Sorbie Tower and therefore ambassador of the Clan Hannay, whose castle he guards,

Shaun Bythell runs 'The Bookshop' in Wigtown, it's Scotland's largest second-hand bookshop, and is now incredibly popular. Back in 2017, Shaun published, 'The Diary of a Bookseller', a book filled with his daily experiences running the store. People fell in love with his wry musings, the life of a bookseller, and it became a Sunday Times bestseller. He's followed it up with 'Confessions of a Bookseller', and 'Remainders of the Day', in the 'Bookseller Series'.We talk about why everyone finds the life of a bookseller appealing and whether that's really what it's like. You can hear how a diary becomes published, how an editor works on it, and whether having them published has changed how he writes a diary. This was recorded back in 2022, I have no clue why it's taken so long to be released. Welcome back to Got Books, the podcast where we talk to booksellers from all around the world. And welcome to this short Christmas series, meant as a mini-Advent Calendar to get you in the holiday spirit. From Dec 3rd to Dec 17th, we'll be publishing an episode every Monday and Friday - that's 5 Christmas episodes for you, in which we're bringing back some of the booksellers that we know and love from past episodes, so they can tell us how they're preparing their bookshops for Christmas, what books to get for the special people in our lives, and what they like or..don't like at all about the holiday season. Today's conversation may take you back in time, as my guest is Shaun Bythell, whose books are the inspiration for this podcast and who was also our very first guest back in January. Shaun's books are diaries of his time as a bookseller, all inspired by his many years of running Scotland's second largest second hand bookshop, fittingly called.. The Bookshop. You can find it in a small town where 1,000 people live and 10,000 visit every year - Wigtown, Scotland's National Booktown. I've invited Shaun today to tell us how he feels about Christmas, what he does to prepare his bookshop for the holidays and what books he thinks we should get as presents this year. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gotbooks/message

This is the first episode of Got Books?, a podcast for those who love getting lost in (and among) books. For those who appreciate the comfort of a bookshop, the smell of a new book and the story of an old one. It's a podcast with those making this possible: the booksellers. We will be interviewing bookshop owners all around the world and for our very episode we travelled to Scotland. In the south-west parts of Scotland lies Wigtown, a small town where 1,000 people live and 10,000 visit every year. Wigtown is Scotland's National Booktown, a title won in 1999 that has not only turned it into a tourist attraction, but gave a complete makeover to the local economy. Down Main Street, in a millennium-old Georgian building, behind a forest green door guarded by two spiralling book columns you will find The Bookshop, Scotland's largest second-hand book shop. Nine rooms, a mile of shelving, 100,000 books. Straight out of a fairy tale, the Bookshop has hidden nooks and crannies, a staircase door, a creaky old floor showing off scars from when it used to be a grocery store back in the 50's and of course, a resident cat. Much of its charm has been crafted or preserved by its current owner and our guest today, Shaun Bythell. Shaun has been the owner of The Bookshop since 2001 and has since published three delectable books of wry observations from his perspective as a bookseller, which have only increased the notoriety of his bookshop: The Diary of a Bookseller, Confessions of a Bookseller and Seven Kinds of People You Find in a Bookshop. We couldn't have wished for a more fitting first guest to our podcast. Without further ado, Shaun Bythell. “Comparison is the death of joy.” ― Mark Twain The thief of joy, if Mark Twain is right, is of our own making. The good news in this revelation reveals each of us can take back our joy. Comparing ourselves to others occurs consciously and unconsciously. Consciously, we may be acutely aware that we follow certain people on social media to see how we are doing in relation; unconsciously, when we choose not to speak up to set a boundary, when we set a checklist for our life delineating what should happen by what age. Each of these three are examples of many more of unhelpful comparison, and while comparison is a primal instinct for survival, the good news evolution and civil society have provided the opportunity and arguably the necessity for each of us of to offer the world our unique talents rather than limiting ourselves to remain part of the herd or tribe. The habit of comparison is a learned skill, and therefore, it can be unlearned; however, it must be a conscious choice to do so. Fundamentally, when we compare ourselves with others, some part of us believes we are not enough or needs to be reassured that we are enough just as we are. Today, I will be examining five areas of our lives in which comparison can creep in and become destructive to contentment and living a fulfilling life, and then share how to let go of such comparing with the outside world. Life Goals, Your Journey “Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do.” —Brené Brown Brené Brown's quote above speaks beautifully to the need for us to let go of the timeline checklist we may have put in place for our lives. This is not to persuade you to let go of setting goals, but rather to examine who such goals are actually for. Who benefits? If the outcome enables you to be accepted by a particular group in your personal life or society, then this item is a checklist item that is being attended to out of comparison; however, if the outcome fulfills something within you that enables you to exercise your talents more fully and share them with the world, then such a checklist item is a keeper. Social Environment — Who Surrounds You? "Nobody at your table should inherit a seat, be there by accident or simply have a place because of the time you have known each other or because they are popular with others." —Lucy Sheridan, The Comparison Cure A significant reason it can be extremely difficult to be ourselves with and around others has to do with who the "others" are. From my own experience, one reason I thoroughly enjoy living on my own and my own company has to do with only needing permission from myself to be and do what comes naturally or piques my curioisity without worrying what others think. However, that "worry" sprung out of life experience when I was myself around others. As young children, we did not know that doing something that was naturally part of who we were or innately drew our interest that prompted dismissal, scorn or laughing to tease and suppress was a reflection of an unhealthy relationship, not a reflection of doing something "wrong". And so we shifted. We edited. We adapted. Now we are adults. Now we know more and we can return to embracing who we are and have always been, even though we may have kept it under wraps or hidden away for fear of laughter, teasing or dismissal (again, all conditioned fears based on our past experience). Where do we begin? Setting boundaries. In episode #126, boundaries are discussed in detail. The reason to establish your personal boundaries is because when we don't, "we give away our time, effort, the potential for fun and creativity" as Lucy Sheridan reminds in her book The Comparison Cure. When thought about through that lens, motivation to set boundaries becomes easier. If you too are someone who finds comfort in your own company, however, wants to welcome people into your life yet fears being unable to be yourself if you do so, be patient with yourself, build the skill of setting boundaries, and when you do, you will begin to meet and then know with confidence who you can welcome into your life so that you can continue to be fully yourself. Setting boundaries will reveal underlying truths of all of your relationships - who respects and understands, who pushes back, why they were friends or built a relationship with you in the first place. In other words, your social community may shift, but it will shift for the better, opening up room for the right people to enter. Intimate Relationships “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?” – Ru Paul On the other side of comparing yourself with others is accepting and appreciating where you are in the present moment as well as appreciating and accepting where others are in the same present moment. When we look outside of ourselves for validation - how should I be dressing (trends, etc.), what should my home look like?, when should I be getting married?, what day of the week is it okay to go to bed early?(this one may sound silly, but when we apologize to others or tease ourselves for habits we love - i.e. going to bed early - we are invalidating our choices) - we have not found contentment with ourselves from within ourselves. We are instead asking the outside world to tell us we are "okay". Such seeking is not loving and is not an acceptance of ourselves. This habit of seeking outside validation makes it extremely difficult to accept others as they are if they don't "fit in" to our expectations of what they "should be" and "should do", which makes it difficult to build loving, respectful and secure relationships. I cannot recommend more highly this book for improving our ability to be more loving to ourselves and thereby be able to be a healthy partner in a relationship - How to Be An Adult in Relationships. I will be exploring more of the topics shared in this book in upcoming episodes. Everyday Life - Contentment “Comparison with myself brings improvement, comparison with others brings discontent.” – Betty Jamie Chung In 2012 I shared this post about competing with others which reiterates the quote above. Comparison with others is a form of competition with others, and it drains, it exhausts, it depletes, it is never a positive effect on our lives. Even in sports, you can only do your best, even though technically you are on the field/court/stage "competing" with others. However, it doesn't matter what they do. It is your engagement to present your full capabilities that will determine the outcome. Be motivated to improve upon yourself, but do not denigrate yourself for areas you wish to strengthen. The component that must be present in order to compare only with ourselves and not the outside world is a strong self-confidence. In episode #5 of the podcast, confidence and the strength it brings into our lives is explored. Just as comparison is a learned skill, acquiring and attaining self-confidence is a skill as well - a skill worth acquiring for a contented life. However, once we have acquired self-confidence, we must not stop exercising it as it will atrophy. Our lives change, new experiences arise and therefore, we are challenged to navigate well through each of the events and engagements with others. Our self-confidence will be challenged and questioned within our own minds, thus why we must exercise it as though it were a muscle, because in many ways it is. First of all, as Lucy Sheridan points out, "self-confidence is a key step in ridding your life of comparison as it gives you agency over your actions and ownership of your thoughts and behavior". What happens when we don't have self-confidence? Words go unsaid - speaking up for ourselves, sharing ideas, setting boundaries Ideas go undeveloped and brought to fruition The finite time we have is spent on the wrong priorities, with the wrong people How to exercise self-confidence, as shared in The Comparison Cure: Speak your truth - in person. (emails can only go so far, texting can only go so far) Keep more of your secrets - we often share more because we are seeking outside approval for our decisions, our lifestyle, etc. - more "likes" does not equate to more self-confidence. rather it is often a reflection of needing to strengthen one's self-confidence. Plan ahead - do the necessary work ahead of time to perform well, to acquire the desired outcome, etc. Be present in the moment you find yourself - by doing so, you reduce or eliminate worry about the future. Giving your best now, in this moment, will enable the next moment - tomorrow, the future - to have the best chance of revealing what you wish to see. Check-in with yourself regularly - Sheridan shares a helpful exercise for examining tasks you keep putting off. Journaling her answers to the following questions: Is this still important to me? Why? What, if any, are the benefits of continuing with this task/goal? What's my next right step? Choose hope, let go of expectation - in other words, practice non-attachment to the outcome. Communicate powerfully and effectively - Sheridan coins the phrase 'calm power'. Delivery is equally as influencial as the content of what you are sharing. Know your audience (it's not about you, but about who you are trying to communicate with - what will motivate them to engage as you desire?), maintain your credibility (apologize when warranted), and eliminate the "fluff, huff, puff and fuss" that is unhelpful and dissuades from the desired outcome. Strengthening Your Self-Worth “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” – Dolly Parton Each of us is born with self-worth and possesses it our entire lives; however, we often lose track of this truth along our life journey at some point. Let this be your reminder, you innately possess self-worth. Nobody can take that away from you. Simply put, "Having self-worth is knowing who you are and being okay with it. It's the result of deep inner work, increased self-care, self-love and self-acceptance." Lucy Sheridan goes on to say, "Note that possessing self-worth does not necessarily mean having to reach and retain a constant sense of joyful ecstasy, but it is at least a gentle, palpable appreciation." As I describe it, knowing you have self-worth, consciously knowing this truth, is to bring the ability to be content in your everyday life. It is a grounding, and it enables your self-confidence to come forth in all that you do and in each interaction that you have in a calmly powerful way. For a detailed post on how to strengthen your self-worth, read this post which shares 10 ways to do just that. Living a life free of comparison with the outside world becomes a habit after a conscious decision to make it so. A few simple ways to consciously start letting go of comparison in your personal and work life: Become selective about who you follow on social media - follow for inspiration, information, heart-warming, positively challenge you, healthy entertainment and pique curiosity to boost quality of life Don't feel compelled or required to follow your friends or family online - you can be a good friend and family member off-line. Let them have their space to be them which may help you reduce the urge to compare. Let go of perfection Put an out of office message on at all times - tailor to your profession, but this immediately establishes boundaries of your work time and manages expectations in our culture of immediacy. Check emails two times a day for an allotted amount of time and abide by it - the inbox will never be zero. Create a labeling/flagging system for yourself that alerts you to emails you need to address, set up a "folder system" that provides a space to put emails you do not want to erase. Your "out of office message" will provide the space and time to respond properly and effectively on your schedule. Surround yourself with people and situations that curate an environment that enables you to thrive, grow, be challenged as a way of growing, and give back. Become comfortable with saying No. Time is finite, so become clear about what you can do, need to do and want to make time so that you can do. The work of letting go of comparison is a practice in making space for a life of deep contentment and fulfillment. It is a life that will resonate most strongly with you and may not make sense to others, but those who love you, with whom you have communicated powerfully, yet respectfully with along the way, will be there to share it with you and their lives with you. Free of comparison and full of celebration and appreciation. Knihu vydalo nakladatelství Dybbuk a přeložila Markéta Hofmeisterová. Shaun Bythell runs The Bookshop, Wigtown, and is the author of The Diary of a Bookseller which documents, with wry humour, the realities of running a secondhand bookshop in Wigtown, western Scotland: the customers, staff and passersby who fill his pages are amusing, infuriating and all too real. He selects books to recommend across fiction and non-fiction, children's and cookbooks and explains why running your own bookshop means you rarely get the chance to browse in others' shops. The Diary of a Bookseller is published by Profile Books and is out now. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
