Nick Jeffery and John Granger continue their Q&A conversations about Rowling-Galbraith's Hallmarked Man (if you missed the first discussion, click here to catch up). As usual, the pair promised to send links and notes along with their recorded back and forth for anyone wanting to read more about the subjects they discussed. Scroll down for their seven plus one questions and a bevy of bonus material they trust will add to your appreciation of Rowling's Strike 8 artistry and meaning. Cheers!Q1: What is the meaning of or artistry involved with Pat Chauncey's three fish in the Agency's fish tank, ‘Robin,' ‘Cormoran,' and ‘Travolta/Elton'?Mise en Abyme (Wikipedia)In Western art history, mise en abyme (French pronunciation: [miz ɑ̃n‿abim]; also mise en abîme) is the technique of placing a copy of an image within itself, often in a way that suggests an infinitely recurring sequence. In film theory and literary theory, it refers to the story within a story technique. The term is derived from heraldry, and means placed into abyss (exact middle of a shield). It was first appropriated for modern criticism by the French author André Gide. A common sense of the phrase is the visual experience of standing between two mirrors and seeing an infinite reproduction of one's image. Another is the Droste effect, in which a picture appears within itself, in a place where a similar picture would realistically be expected to appearSnargaloff pods (Harry Potter Wiki)“It sprang to life at once; long, prickly, bramble-like vines flew out of the top and whipped through the air... Harry succeeded in trapping a couple of vines and knotting them together; a hole opened in the middle of all the tentacle-like branches... Hermione snatched her arm free, clutching in her fingers a pod... At once, the prickly vines shot back inside and the gnarled stump sat there looking like an innocently dead lump of wood“— The trio dealing with the Snargaluff plant in sixth year Herbology classSnargaluff was a magical plant with the appearance of a gnarled stump, but had dangerous hidden thorn-covered vines that attacked when provoked, and was usually best handled by more than one person.Juliana's Question about the Oranda Goldfish:did anyone else notice - I confess to only noticing this on my second re-read of THM- that Travolta, Pat's third fish, dies? What do we think about this? Could this mean Mr. Ryan F. Murphy dies…? Or could it just be foreshadowing of the fact that him and Robin don't end up together? I think the fish symbolism was quite humorous and delightful paralleling such a deep and intricate plot. Just wanted to know if anyone noticed this tinge of humor towards the end of the book… As for the fish theory, Pat's three fish in the tank: Strike, Robin and the third, she calls, Travolta — ironically, named after a “handsome” man. I'm thinking JKR meant Travolta, the fish to symbolize Murphy…What I was referring to in my original comment: the three fish = the love triangle between Ellacott/Murphy/Strike. I was asking: since Travolta died in Chapter 113, do we think this foreshadows Murphy either dying physically, or just that Robin and Murphy do not end up together?John's ‘Fish and Peas' Response:It's a relief to learn that Travolta's most famous role wasn't a character named Ryan Murphy that everyone in the world except myself knows very well. Thank you for this explanation! There's more to your idea, though, I think, then you have shared. Forgive me if you were already aware of this textual argument that suggests very strongly that these Oranda goldfish have been an important part of Rowling's plan from the series from the start. In brief, it's about the peas.In Part 2, Chapter 3, of ‘Cuckoo's Calling,' Robin and Matt are having their first fight about Strike and the Agency. The chapter ends with an odd note that this disagreement has blemished the Cunliffe couple's engagement.“She waited until he had walked away into the sitting room before turning off the tap. There was, she noticed, a fragment of frozen pea caught in the setting of her engagement ring.” (73)Your theory that the fish bowl is an embedded picture of the state of Robin's feelings for Murphy and Strike, a Mise en abyme of sorts, is given credibility in the eyes of this reader by the appearance of frozen peas as the cure for the dying Cormoran goldfish. It is hard for a Rowling Reader to believe that these two mentions of frozen pea fragments were coincidental or unrelated, which means that (a) Rowling had the office Oranda goldfish scene-within-the-scene in Strike 8 foreshadowed by the Strike 1 tiff, and (b) therefore of real significance. There is another pea bit, of course, in ‘Troubled Blood' at Skegness, a passage that links Robin's heart or essence with peas.Strike was still watching the starlings when Robin set down two polystyrene trays, two small wooden forks and two cans of Coke on the table.“Mushy peas,” said Strike, looking at Robin's tray, where a hefty dollop of what looked like green porridge sat alongside her fish and chips.“Yorkshire caviar,” said Robin, sitting down. “I didn't think you'd want any.”“You were right,” said Strike, picking up a sachet of tomato sauce while watching with something like revulsion as Robin dipped a chip into the green sludge and ate it.“Soft Southerner, you are,” she said, and Strike laughed. (807-808)If you tie this in with the fish symbolism embedded in Rowling's favorite paintings and the meaning of ‘Oranda,' this is quite a bit of depth in that fish bowl -- and in your argument that the death of Travolta signifies Murphy is out of consideration. You're probably to young to remember this but Travolta's most famous role will always be Tony Manero in ‘Saturday Night Fever,' the breakout event of his acting career. Manero longs for a woman way out of his league, attempts to rape her after they win a dance contest, she naturally rejects him, but they wind up as friends.Or in a book so heavy in the cultish beliefs and practices of Freemasonry, especially with respect to policemen that are also “on the square,” maybe the Travolta-Murphy link is just that the actor is, with Tom Cruise, as famous (well...) for his beliefs in Scientology as for his acting ability. So, yes, it's fun, your ‘Peas and Fish' theory, but there's something to it.Check out this note on ‘Peas' in the Strike novels from Renee over at the weblog: https://www.hogwartsprofessor.com/hallmarked-man-placeholder-post-index/comment-page-1/#comment-1699017 The fish symbolism embedded in Rowling's favorite painting: https://hogwartsprofessor.substack.com/p/rowlings-favorite-painting-and-what And the meaning of ‘Oranda:' https://www.hogwartsprofessor.com/rowling-twixter-fish-and-strike-update/Follow-Up by Julianna:I'm not sure what exact chapter this is in, but let's also not forget that on Sark, Strike procures a bag of frozen peas to soothe the spade to his face injury. I also want to add that he has used frozen peas before, to soothe his aching leg too, but I could be wrong about that…I cant remember where I've read that, so it might not be true….Lastly, after reading Renee's comment, I have to say, that now I do believe that the peas might have been an ongoing symbol for Strike (a la…the pea in the engagement ring) and…stay with me here….peas are potentially, what save Cormoran, the goldfish, from dying.“The black fish called Cormoran was again flailing helplessly at the top of the tank. ‘Stupid a*****e, you've done it to your f*cking self'.” And the very last line of the book being: “Then pushed himself into a standing position ear and knee both throbbing. In the absence of anything else he could do to improve his present situation, he set off for the attic to fetch the empty margerine tub…and some peas.” (Chapter 127).My point being: this could be a way of Rowling saying, that Strike saves himself from himself…another psychological undertone in her stories. (Lake reference: Rowling has pulled herself up out of poverty ‘by her own bootstraps' we say.) Thoughts? Thanks for induldging me here, John! I am enjoying this conversation. Apologies for the grammar and potentially confusing train of thoughts. And from Vicky:Loving the theories and symbolism around the peas and fish! Just had a thought too re John quoting the Troubled blood scene. Robin calls mushy peas by a familiar term “Yorkshire caviar”. Caviar is of course fish eggs, and poor Robin, Yorkshire born, spends much of THM agonising over the thought and pressure of freezing her eggs. Giuliana mentioned the frozen peas Strike puts on his swollen face after the spade hit...maybe this is foreshadowing to their intimate and honest dinner conversation later with Robin baring her heart to Strike about her ectopic pregnancy griefQ2: Why didn't the Strike-Ellacott Agency or the Metropolitan Police figure out how the murderer entered the Ramsay Silver vault to kill William Wright the first time they saw the grainy surveillance film of the auction house crate deliveries?Tweet UrlFrom ‘The Locked Room Lecture' (John Dickson Carr) It's silly to be disappointed in a border-line absurd Locked Room Mystery such as Hallmarked Man because improbability is close to a requirement in such stories:“But this point must be made, because a few people who do not like the slightly lurid insist on treating their preferences as rules. They use, as a stamp of condemnation, the word ‘improbable.' And thereby they gull the unwary into their own belief that ‘improbable' simply means ‘bad.'“Now, it seems reasonable to point out that the word improbable is the very last which should ever be used to curse detective fiction in any case. A great part of our liking fofr detective fiction is based on a liking for improbability. When A is murdered, and B and C are under strong suspicion, it is improbably that the innocent-looking D can be guilty. But he is. If G has a perfect alibi, sworn to at every point by every other letter in the alphabet, it is improbable that G can have committed the crime. But he has. When the detective picks up a fleck of coal dust at the seashore, it is improbable that such an insignificant thing can have any importance. But it will. In short, you come to a point where the word improbable grows meaningless as a jeer. There can be no such thing as any probability until the end of the story. And then, if you wish the murder to be fastened on an unlikely person (as some of us old fogies do), you can hardly complain because he acted from motives less likely or necessarily less apparent than those of the person first suspected.“When the cry of ‘This-sort-of-thing-wouldn't-happen!' goes up, when you complain about half-faced fiends and hooded phantoms and blond hypnotic sirens, you are merely saying, ‘I don't like this sort of story.' That's fair enough. If you do not like it, you are howlingly right to say so. But when you twist this matter of taste into a rule for judging the merit or even the probability of the story, you are merely saying, ‘This series of events couldn't happen, because I shouldn't enjoy it if it did.'“What would seem to be the truth of the matter? We might test it out by taking the hermetically sealed chamber as an example, because this situation has been under a hotter fire than any other on the grounds of being unconvincing.“Most people, I am delighted to say, are fond of the locked room. But – here's the damned rub – even its friends are often dubious. I cheerfully admit that I frequently am. So, for the moment, we'll all side together on this score and see what we can discover. Why are we dubious when we hear the explanation of the locked room? Not in the least because we are incredulous, but simply because in some vague way we are disappointed. And from that feeling it is only natural to take an unfair step farther, and call the whole business incredible or impossible or flatly ridiculous.” (reprinted in The Art of the Mystery Story [Howard Haycraft] 273-286)Q3: Hallmarked Man is all about silver and Freemasonry. What is the historical connection between South American silver (‘Argentina' means ‘Land of Silver'), the end of European feudalism, and the secret brotherhood of the Masons? How Silver Flooded the World: And how that Replaced Feudalism and the Church with Capitalism and Nation-States (‘Uncharted Territories,' Tomas Pueyo) In Europe, silver also triggered the discovery of America, a technological explosion, and a runaway chain of events that replaced feudalism with capitalism and nation-states. If you understand this, you'll be able to understand why nation-states are threatened by cryptocurrencies today, and how their inevitable success will weaken nation-states. In this premium article, we're going to explore how Europe starved for silver, and how the reaction to this flooded the world with silver. ,See also Never Bet Against America and Argentina Could be a Superpower, both by Pueyo.‘Conspiracy Theories associated with Freemasonry' (Wikipedia)* That Freemasonry is a Jewish front for world domination or is at least controlled by Jews for this goal. An example of this is the anti-Semitic literary forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Adolf Hitler believed that Freemasonry was a tool of Jewish influence,[12] and outlawed Freemasonry and persecuted Freemasons partially for this reason.[13] The covenant of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas claims that Freemasonry is a “secret society” founded as part of a Zionist plot to control the world.[14] Hilaire Belloc thought Jews had “inaugurated” freemasonry “as a bridge between themselves and their hosts”[15]* That Freemasonry is tied to or behind Communism. The Spanish dictator Francisco Franco had often associated his opposition with both Freemasonry and Communism, and saw the latter as a conspiracy of the former; as he put it, “The whole secret of the campaigns unleashed against Spain can be explained in two words: masonry and communism”.[16] In 1950, Irish Roman Catholic priest Denis Fahey republished a work by George F. Dillon under the title Grand Orient Freemasonry Unmasked as the Secret Power Behind Communism. Modern conspiracy theorists such as Henry Makow have also claimed that Freemasonry intends the triumph of Communism[17]* That Freemasons are behind income taxes in the US. One convicted tax protester has charged that law enforcement officials who surrounded his property in a standoff over his refusal to surrender after his conviction were part of a “Zionist, Illuminati, Free Mason [sic] movement”.[18] The New Hampshire Union Leader also reported that “the Browns believe the IRS and the federal income tax are part of a deliberate plot perpetrated by Freemasons to control the American people and eventually the world”[19]Umberto Eco's The Prague Cemetery, a Freemasonry Novel (Wikipedia)So much for the link between Freemasonry and Baphomet worship!‘The Desacralization of Work' (Roger Sworder, Mining, Metallurgy, and the Meaning of Life)Q4: Ian Griffiths is the Bad Guy of Hallmarked Man. His name has definite Christian overtones (a ‘Griffin,' being half-eagle, half-lion, King of Heaven and Earth, is a symbol of Christ); could it also be another pointer to Rowling's mysterious ‘Back Door Man,' Harry Bingham, author of the Fiona Griffiths series?Troubled Blood: The Acknowledgments (Nick Jeffery, November 2020)In both Silkworm and Career Rowling/Galbraith's military advisors are thanked as SOBE (Sean Harris OBE?) Deeby (Di Brookes?) and the Back Door Man. Professor Granger has identified the Back Door Man as a southern US slang term for a man having an illicit relationship, but beyond this is so far unidentified.Any thoughts on her dedications or acknowledgements? Any new leads for the elusive Back Door Man? Please comment down below.Harry Bingham's website, June 2012“My path into TALKING TO THE DEAD was a curious one. I was approached by a well-known figure who was contemplating working with a ghostwriter on a crime thriller. I hadn't read any crime for a long time, but was intrigued by the project. So I went out and bought about two dozen crime novels, then read them back-to-back over about two weeks.”Could Rowling have hired a (gasp) “ghost writer”? Or was it just “expert editorial assistance” she was looking for, what Bingham offers today?Author's Notes in The Strange Death of Fiona Grifiths (Publication date 29th January 2015, before Career of Evil):“If you want to buy a voice activated bugging device that looks like (and is) an ordinary power socket, it'll set you back about fifty pounds (about eighty bucks).”This is the same surveillance device used in Lethal White, but interestingly is not used in Bingham's book. (103, The Dead House), a cave opening cathedral-like onto a lake, the heroine enters with a mentor, blood spilled at the entrance, and featuring a remarkable escape (chapter 34, The Dead House), etc, especially the Robin-Fiona parallels....(6) A series starring a female protagonist who works brilliantly undercover, whose story is about recovery from a trauma experienced when she was a college student, who struggles mostly with her romantic relationships with men, a struggle that is a combination of her mental health-recovery progress (or lack of same) and her vocation as a detective, who is skilled in the martial art of self-defense, and who is from a world outside London, an ethnicity and home fostering, of all things, a love of sheep;(7) A series with a love of the mythological or at least the non-modern (King Arthur! Anchorites!)Q5: Can you help us out with some UK inside jokes or cultural references of which we colonists can only guess the meaning? Start with Gateshead, Pit Ponies, and Council Flats and Bed-Sits!* Gateshead (Wikipedia)J. B. Priestley, writing of Gateshead in his 1934 travelogue English Journey, said that “no true civilisation could have produced such a town”, adding that it appeared to have been designed “by an enemy of the human race”.* Pit Ponies (Wikipedia)Larger horses, such as varieties of Cleveland Bay, could be used on higher underground roadways, but on many duties small ponies no more than 12 hands (48 inches, 122 cm) high were needed. Shetlands were a breed commonly used because of their small size, but Welsh, Russian, Devonshire (Dartmoor) and Cornish ponies also saw extensive use in England.[2] In the interwar period, ponies were imported into Britain from the Faroe Islands, Iceland and the United States. Geldings and stallions only were used. Donkeys were also used in the late 19th century, and in the United States, large numbers of mules were used.[6] Regardless of breed, typical mining ponies were low set, heavy bodied and heavy limbed with plenty of bone and substance, low-headed and sure-footed. Under the British Coal Mines Act 1911 (1 & 2 Geo. 5. c. 50), ponies had to be four years old and work ready (shod and vet checked) before going underground.[15] They could work until their twenties. At the peak of this practice in 1913, there were 70,000 ponies underground in Britain. In shaft mines, ponies were normally stabled underground[16] and fed on a diet with a high proportion of chopped hay and maize, coming to the surface only during the colliery's annual holiday.* Council Flats (Wikipedia)Q6: What are Rowling Readers to think of Robin's dream in chapter 22 (174 )when she's sleeping next to Murphy but dreaming of being at Ramsay's Silver with Strike and the showroom is filled with “cuddly toys instead of masonic swords and aprons”?* ‘Harry's Dreams:' Steve Vander Ark, Harry Potter LexiconQ7: The first bad news phone call that Robin takes from her mother Linda in Hallmarked Man is about the death of Rowntree. What is the connection between Robin's beloved Chocolate Labrador, Quakers, and Rowling's Golden Thread about ‘What is Real'?‘Troubled Blood: Poisoned Chocolates' (John Granger, 2021)‘Troubled Blood: The Secret of Rowntree' (John Granger, 2021)I explained in ‘Deathly Hallows and Penn's Fruits of Solitude‘ why Penn's quotation is a key to the Hogwarts Saga finale, how, in brief, the “inner light” doctrines of the Quakers and of non-conformist esoteric Christianity in general inform the story of Harry's ultimate victory in Dobby's grave over doubt and his subsequent ‘win' in his battle against death and the Dark Lord. I urge you to read that long post, one of the most important, I think, ever posted at HogwartsProfessor, for an idea of how central to Rowling's Christian faith the tenets of Quakerism really are as well as how this shows itself in Deathly Hallows. What makes the historical chocolate connection with the Quakers, one strongly affirmed in naming the Ellacott dog ‘Rowntree,' that much more interesting then is the easy segue from the “inner light” beliefs of the Christian non-conformists to the effect of chocolate on characters in Rowling and Galbraith novels. The conscience of man per the Quakers are our logos within that is continuous with the Logos fabric of reality, the Word that brings all things into existence and the light that is in every man (cf., the Prologue to St John's Gospel). Our inner peace and fellowship, in this view, depend on our identification with this transpersonal “inner light” rather than our ephemeral ego concerns. What is the sure way to recover from a Dementor attack, in which your worst nightmares are revisited? How does Robin deal with stress and the blues? Eat some chocolate, preferably a huge bar from Honeydukes or a chocolate brownie if you cannot get to Hogsmead.Access, in other words, the Quaker spiritual magic, the “inner light” peace of communion with what is Absolute and transcendent, a psychological effect exteriorized in story form by Rowling as the good feeling we have in eating chocolate. Or in the companionship and unconditional love of a beloved Labrador, preferably a chocolate Lab.Christmas Pig: The Blue Bunny' (John Granger, 2021)“Do you just want to live in nice houses?” asked Blue Bunny. “Or is there another reason you want to get in?”“Yes,” said Jack, before the Christmas Pig could stop him. “Somebody I need's in there. He's called DP and he's my favorite cuddly toy.”For a long moment, Jack and Blue Bunny stared into each other's eyes and then Blue Bunny let out a long sigh of amazement.“You're a boy,” he whispered. “You're real.”“He isn't,” said the panic-stricken Christmas Pig. “He's an action figure called—”“It's all right, Pig,” said Blue Bunny, “I won't tell anybody, I promise. You really came all the way into the Land of the Lost to find your favorite toy?” he asked Jack, who nodded.“Then I'll be your decoy,” said Blue Bunny. “It would be an honor” (169).The Bunny's recognition here of Jack as a messiah, sacrificial love incarnate, having descended into existence as a Thing himself from Up There where he was a source of the love that “alivens” objects, is one of, if not the most moving event in Christmas Pig. Note the words he uses: “You're real.”Rowling has used the word “real” twice before as a marker of reality transcending what we experience in conventional time and space, the sensible world. The first was in what she described as the “key” to the Harry Potter series, “lines I waited seventeen years to write” (Cruz), the end of the Potter-Dumbledore dialogue at King's Cross….In a Troubled Blood passage meant to echo that dialogue, with “head” and “backside” reflecting the characters inverted grasp of “reality,” Robin and Strike talk astrology:“You're being affected!” she said. “Everyone knows their star sign. Don't pretend to be above it.”Strike grinned reluctantly, took a large drag on his cigarette, exhaled, then said, “Sagittarius, Scorpio rising, with the sun in the first house.”“You're –” Robin began to laugh. “Did you just pull that out of your backside, or is it real?”“Of course, it's not f*****g real,” said Strike. “None of it's real, is it?” (Blood 242, highlighting in original). The Bunny's simple declaration, “You're real,” i.e., “from Up There,” the greater reality of the Land of the Living in which Things have their awakening in the love of their owners, clarifies these other usages. Dumbledore shares his wisdom with Harry that the maternal love which saved him, first at Godric's Hollow and then in the Forest, is the metaphysical sub-stance beneath, behind, and within all other reality. Strike gives Robin a dose of his skeptical ignorance and nominalist first principle that nothing is real but surface appearance subject to measurement and physical sensation, mental grasp of all things being consequent to that.Christmas Pig‘s “real” moment acts as a key to these others, one evident in the Bunny's response to the revelation of Jack's greater ontological status. He does a Dobby, offering to die for Jack as Jack has done in his descent into the Land of the Lost for DP, a surrender of self to near certain death in being given to the Loser he considers an “honor.” He acts spontaneously and selflessly as a “decoy,” a saving replacement in other words, for the “living boy” as Dobby did for the “Boy Who Lived.” The pathetic distraction that saved the DP rescue mission in Mislaid despite himself, crying out in desperation for his own existence, has metamorphized consequent to his experience with Broken Angel and in Jack's example, into a heroic decoy that allows Jack and CP to enter the City of the Missed. The Blue Bunny makes out better than the House-elf, too, and this is the key event of the book and the best evidence since the death of Lily Potter, Harry's defeat of Quirrell, and the demise of the Dark Lord that mother's love is Rowling's default symbolism for Christian love in her writing. The Bunny's choice to act as decoy, his decision to die to his ego-self, generates the life saving appearance of maternal love and its equivalent in the transference attachment a child feels for a beloved toy. The Johannine quality of the light that shines down on him from the Finding Hole and his Elijah-esque elevation nails down the Logos-love correspondence.EC: All through Hallmarked Man Robin is saying to herself, “I think I love Ryan, no, really, I know I love him…,” which of course is Rowling's way of signaling the conflict this character has in her feelings for Strike and for Murphy. Max Jones is a traditional food preservationist and the founder of Up There the Last, a project based in West Cork. Max's work revolves around practices that turn the landscape into food. He believes that within each of us is an inherent superhero ability to know what's going on in our immediate surroundings and seeks to encourage people to allow that intuition to guide our choices—particularly concerning the food we eat. It seems like there's not much Max can't do: he's a teacher, a writer, a photographer, a builder, and a craftsman—in addition to being the father of two. When we recently learned he also plays a mean guitar, we almost lost it! On this episode, we speak with Max about the true provenance of food; how a customer complaint about food cost put him on an unexpected trajectory; building the Keep with Sally Barnes; and the impact of excessive food regulations on artisanal practices. We have made a lot of sacrifices for our capital campaign. But what good is it if we do not save our souls? That is the whole point of everything that happens here.A priest wants every single person in his parish to save their souls. We want everyone here to be reunited in Heaven one day. We don't want anyone to be missing.Fr. McBride and I don't want to appear before Our Lord and hear from Him, “Yes, you were at St. Isidore's in Watkins. You saved many souls. But look at all of these other souls who went to hell.”One of the most important prayers of the priest is: “Lord, do not let any one of the souls that you have confided to me be lost forever!”Mortal sinIf there is one thing that a priest worries about more than anything else, it is the souls that have a habit of mortal sin. What do I mean by a habit of mortal sin?I mean that mortal sin happens regularly, in a predictable way.The soul commits a mortal sin every day, every week, every month, whatever. It is not something that happens occasionally; it happens according to a regular pattern. It is when a soul usually confesses mortal sin when he goes to confession.ImpurityIf this is happening, we all know the reason. 99% of the time, it is because of impurity. The soul has gotten into a pattern of indulging in illicit sexual pleasure and cannot give it upThere are teenagers who start off on a bad habit of self-abuse. Then, they find that, when they want to stop, they are unable. There are teenagers and adults who have formed bad habits with technological devices. They have the behavior of addicts. They are always telling themselves that they are going to stop and yet they never do stop. What are we exchanging Heaven for? What are we exchanging the love of God for?

Some episodes are original stories, others will be classics that helped shape the mystery genre we know today. All are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes (unless it's really bad)This is Season 5, Move It or Lose It. This season contains original stories paying homage to the vehicles that propel mysteries forward. A train was the setting for Agatha Christie's famed Murder on the Orient Express. A river boat then took center stage on Death on the Nile. Cars have been prominently featured in American crime stories with the glory of the get-a-way vehicle. Then there are the heists from carriages to trains to armored trucks. For Episode 4, Flatbed Tow Truck is the featured vehicle. Comes now December into the court of our current existence. What shall the tenor of this month be? Does this depend on the player and their ability to read the script? Every single episode of Charlottesville Community Engagement is written down in a fashion to serve as a way to communicate items of importance. I'm Sean Tubbs, producing these informational programs to describe as much of the stage as possible. On today's program:* One person is dead after an early morning fire on Pen Park Lane today* Charlottesville opens up applications for nonprofits to provide supportive services related to housing * Republican Delegate Marie March of Christiansburg submits several bills to undo legislation passed in 2020 when the General Assembly was controlled by Democrats* And the Albemarle Planning Commission recommends denial of a rezoning for 525 units on Old Ivy Road in part because of a lack of information about transportation solutions that are not yet ready for the public to see First shout-out: Homelessness in Charlottesville: From Stigma to SolutionsWant to learn how to help our unhoused neighbors find affordable permanent housing? LivableCville is hosting a webinar, "Homelessness in Charlottesville: From Stigma to Solutions", on Wednesday, December 14 at 5:30 PM. Learn from experts from The Haven and the Blue Ridge Area Coalition for the Homeless about housing, homelessness, and policy recommendations to address homelessness in Charlottesville. Registration information is available at LivableCville.orgFire on Pen Park Lane claims one lifeAn early morning fire in Albemarle County's urban ring killed one person after midnight today. The Albemarle County Fire Rescue announced that both career and volunteer units responded to a structure fire report on Pen Park Lane. “The first apparatus arrived on scene seven minutes after dispatch and observed fire through the roof of the residence,” reads a press release. Crews from the City of Charlottesville also responded. Unfortunately, the occupant of the home was found dead. The name has not been released and the Fire Marshal is investigating. The release ends with a reminder to check to see if your smoke alarms are working. Learn more at Albemarle.org/SafeatHome.Charlottesville opens up housing support applicationsA housing plan adopted by the Charlottesville City Council in March 2021 called for a shift in the way the city funded programs to build, preserve, and maintain units that are guaranteed to be sold or rented below the market value.“The Affordable Housing Plan recommends that the City make a strong and recurring financial commitment to address housing needs in Charlottesville in order to (1) increase the number of subsidized affordable homes by 1,100 homes (on top of an existing 1,630 actively subsidized homes), (2) preserve 600 existing subsidized affordable homes, and (3) stabilize 1,800 to 2,200 owner and renter households facing housing instability,” reads an application for non-profit groups seeking funding for Housing Operations and Program Support. In mid-October the city's office of Community Solutions announced future funds would be available through four separate pools. One of them is $575,000 made available to nonprofit organizations under the Housing Operations and Program Support category. This used to be under the city's Vibrant Communities Fund. (read the FY23 report)“This competitive application process is open to not-for-profit organizations that engage in affordable housing related activities that may be requesting operational or program type funding. Organizations must have substantial presence in the City of Charlottesville and engage in affordable housing activities within the City limits. Funding will not be guaranteed.”Examples of groups that are funded through this process range from the Albemarle Housing Improvement Program to Shelter for Help in Emergency. Applications are due on December 30, 2022. In early November, the city issued a notice of funding for major construction projects similar to the ones currently under construction at Friendship Court and at South First Street.  That application round closed on November 30. 2023 legislation round-upThere are now 40 days until the beginning of the 2023 General Assembly and the flow of prefiled legislation continues. * Delegate Marie March has filed a bill to allow anyone to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. That's HB1393. March has another bill in HB1394 that would repeal the provision that allows a judge to approve the removal of someone's firearms if they are deemed to be a risk to others. Another bill in HB1398 would prohibit a private property owner from prohibiting others from carrying concealed weapons on their premises or in their vehicle. * Human rights would begin at conception under another March's next bill, HB1395.* Another bill from March would create the Education Savings Account Program which would allow parents and guardians who don't enroll their children in public to have the government pay for their education anyway. (HB1396)* March also has legislation in HB1397 that would allow parents to opt out of all immunizations required to attend school.* March also seeks repeal of the Community Policing Act and its provision that prohibits law enforcement officers from making decisions based on race, and would stop the requirement that police departments and sheriff's offices record racial data for motor vehicle stops and other interactions. (HB1401)* Another bill from March would change the way vehicles are assessed by altering the calculation method for personal property taxes. (HB1402)* Some of Virginia's colleges and universities would be required to provide housing at no cost to certain students when classes aren't in session. HB1403 is from Delegate Anne Ferrell Tata. * Switching to the Senate, Senator Ryan T. McDougle has filed a bill to require a photograph be presented as identification before someone votes. (SB794)* Senator Emmet Hanger has filed a bill to continue a requirement that 50 cents for each head of cattle that is assessed and earmarked for the Cattle Industry Board. The first was in June when the developer asked for a deferral after a long conversation about transportation impacts. (Greystar asks for more time on Old Ivy Residences rezoning after Planning Commission public hearing, June 23, 2022) The planner working for Albemarle County is Cameron Langille.  He described the location of the five properties that make up the project. “To the west is the U.S. Route 250 and U.S. Route 29 bypass,” Langille said. “To the south is Old Ivy Road. To the north is some land that's actually owned by [the University of Virginia]. To the east there are some existing residential developments and that includes University Village and Huntington Village.” The Darden School of Business and the School of Law are to the northeast of the site. Some sections of the properties are designated as Urban Density Residential in the Future Land Use Map and others are designated as Parks and Green Systems. “Basically they want to rezone all of these parcels to R-15 so that a total of 525 dwelling units could be built on site,” Langille said. The development would be a mix of different types of housing from townhouses to apartment complexes. Greystar is proposing to guarantee 15 percent of the total units will be rented to households with incomes below 80 percent of the area median income, a change since the first proposal. That would last for a period of ten years. “That's the county policy now,” said Valerie Long, an attorney with the firm Williams Mullen representing Greystar. “Eighty percent AMI for ten years.” Long said she is aware the county is working on the details of a new policy to require longer terms at deeper levels of affordability. As for transportation, Greystar has proposed a transit stop on Old Ivy Road, new turn lanes into the development, a multiuse path along Old Ivy Road, and they've agreed to pay a portion of infrastructure improvements off-site up to $750,000. The area already has issues according to a traffic study conducted for the rezoning.“The existing conditions that were identified show that there are failing movements during the morning and afternoon peak hours,” said Kevin McDermott, a planning manager for Albemarle who specializes in transportation. “There's also a lack of pedestrian and bicycle connectivity in the corridor.” One of the requests in the rezoning is to have a proffer associated with the 1985 proffer waived. At the time, the landowners agreed to restrict further development until the county was satisfied that enough transportation infrastructure was in place. “That wasn't specified to what would meet that criteria,” McDermott said. Some sidewalks in the area have been constructed since 1985, but problems still exist such as the one-lane railroad underpass at the eastern end of Old Ivy. Road  McDermott said the Virginia Department of Transportation has reviewed potential solutions and concepts have been shared with the county, the city, and the University. “They are still finalizing that study and it will be  made publicly available but based on what we have seen, staff and VDOT believe that there are immediately implementable solutions to address those poor operational issues at the western end of the corridor,” McDermott said. McDermott added VDOT has identified funding for those projects as well.  He said there are no immediate solutions to address the underpass.“But we are still digging into some options over there for a way to get pedestrians under that railroad,” McDermott said. Overall, staff changed their recommendation to one of approval.John Clarkson with Greystar Development represented the company and said the new application reflects previous concerns about affordable housing and transportation made in June. “We want to be good neighbors and participants within the community and we feel like we've made a lot of changes working with staff to meet those requests that you all made for us at that meeting,” Clarkson said. Long said the amount of funding for transportation has also been increased since the summer. “We increased the cash proffer for transportation,” Long said. “It's a total of $1.25 million. We've drafted the proffer to be very flexible.” Before we get to the public hearing, it's important to note that the University of Virginia has long-term plans to develop Ivy Garden, a 20th century apartment complex that will be replaced with more housing and non-residential space. (UVA making plans for Ivy Garden redevelopment, June 9, 2021)Public hearingSeveral dozen person spoke at the public hearing, mostly in opposition. One resident of University Village said the transportation impacts would still be too much. “You know that it takes a no vote on your part to nudge Greystar toward making some improvement in their project,” said Bill Sherman. “I am not against development, be it student or private housing, but I do oppose any consideration that would increase the traffic on Old Ivy and put everyone, especially our pedestrians, at greater risk,” said Elizabeth Vinton, a retired pediatrician who now lives at University Village. Another University Village resident, Lyle Hallowell, said he was concerned that some of the information about transportation including a new traffic study had not been made available to the public before the meeting“One thing I've heard is that there was new data collected and I'm happy to hear that as I'm a bit of a data person,” Hallowell said. “I'm a little sad that it wasn't widely shared with everybody so we learned a lot about who counts and who doesn't tonight.”Hallowell also said he would have liked to have known more about why staff felt comfortable switching their recommendation based on information not yet available to the public. He said residents already on Old Ivy Road should also be considered stakeholders. “We heard that were good plans here and in those good plans, shared with the stakeholders, that there's great promise for this road, shared with the stakeholders. In New York, where I came from two years ago, we say, ‘what am I, chopped liver?' Not all of the public comment was against the project. Will Sanford lives in the Rivanna District.“This property contains one of the longest privately-owned parts of the Rivanna Trail connecting Leonard Sandridge Road to Old Ivy Road,” Sanford said. “I'd like to thank the current owner for letting the public use this trail on the property for more than 20 years. Greystar has been proactive in reaching out to the Rivanna Trail Foundation and the Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club and after working with board members at both organizations, Greystar has illustrated the approximate location of the trail on the concept plan and are willing to proffer a permanent solution for the trail as part of their site plan.”Other speakers supported the project because they said it would bring new housing options to the area that needs them. One of them is Ivo Romenesko, who served in the early 2000's on an Albemarle County committee that recommended the creation of the Neighborhood Model District in zoning. “Predictability of land use was critical to approval of the Neighborhood Model principles over 20 years ago,” Romenesko said. “That was for neighbors and for landowners. Today urban areas are responding to density change, but not fast enough for the population growth.”Romenesko said Old Ivy Residences satisfies the Comprehensive Plan by putting new homes exactly where it was recommended. He reminded the Planning Commission that the reason it's not been developed yet is because VDOT planned to use some of the land for an intersection for the Western Bypass, a project long planned and now defunct. In her rebuttal after the public comment, Valerie Long acknowledged the project would impact a congested road but said Greystar would be part of the eventual solution by providing a multi use path and other infrastructure.“Denying this application and preventing it from being developed will not solve those safety problems or those congestion issues,” Long said. Long added that this project has jump-started a look at the existing issues. “Once we submitted our application, people started looking at, VDOT hired a consultant, they've continued to look at it,” Long said. “There have been lots of discussions with the University, VDOT, Mr. McDermott, and others about how to address it. The University is highly interested in pedestrian issues under the bridge. For all the same reasons that everyone else is.” Then it was time for the Commissioners to weigh in. Lonnie Murray went first.“I do feel very uncomfortable that we heard that there are proposed traffic solutions but we don't know what they are and so we can't really evaluate whether they would be effective or not because we don't have them in front of us,” Murray said. Commission Chair Karen Firehock agreed with the sentiment .“I have to weigh evidence that I have before me in terms of whether solutions are viable and I don't have enough detail on what it is that VDOT has proposed or what it is thinking of,” Firehock said. Commissioner Corey Clayborne said he could support the project. He said a by-right project would also impact transportation, but that would not come with anything from the developer to address issues. He said he trusted staff if they say there is a solution. Commissioner Julian Bivins said he had to honor the condition for the 1985 rezoning that limits development. “The Supervisors put a conditioned precedent on development there whether or not I like it or don't like it,” Bivins said. “They are the ones who get elected. We get appointed.” Bivins also said the University of Virginia needed to step up to be part of the solution to fix the railroad underpass. Commissioner Luis Carrazana also said it was difficult to have a position if the infrastructure would be sufficient. But he said much had improved since June.“There has been several areas that has improved,” Carrazana said. “However, we don't have the infrastructure. Maybe it's on the way. Maybe the plans are there and if this goes to the Board of Supervisors, they can  evaluate if they believe it's substantial enough.” Carrazana also urged neighbors to come to the table to do their part to create a safer transportation network.“If everyone keeps trying to work together, we can actually make this happen,” Carrazana said. Valerie Long was offered one more opportunity to answer questions, most of them about transportation. She said she hoped the Commission would take McDermott at his word that the VDOT study will show solutions that will address issues on the western end.“I think we need to trust the experts,” Long said. Long also said the Timmons Group has produced documents to share with the University about ways to address the eastern end of Old Ivy Road. “The biggest problem with that bridge, and obviously the drainage is a significant issue that needs to be fixed, it's the alignment of the road under the bridge,” Long said. “It doesn't go perpendicular under the bridge. It comes in at an angle.” After that, Bivins made a motion to deny the rezoning. The vote was 5 to 2 with Commissioners Clayborne and Missell voting no. However, the Commission did vote unanimously to recommend approval of changing the classification of slopes from preserved to managed. The VDOT study may be available for the public by the time the project gets to the Board of Supervisors. “They may hopefully be in possession of the VDOT study by that time and can perhaps miraculously UVA could come forward and be more communicative about their willingness to engage in and help make some of these connections,” Firehock said.Reading material for this Friday afternoon:* After long hiatus, UVA's Democrat, Republican groups are speaking, dining again, Andrea Ramspacher, UVA Today, November 11, 2022* PVCC launches new associate degree program in partnership with WillowTree, Dominga Murray, NBC29, December 1, 2022* Albemarle County police say gang violence is behind increase in shootings, car thefts, Alice Berry, Charlottesville Daily Progress, December 1, 2022* ACPD: Juveniles charged in connection with shootings, car thefts, Dryden Quigley, NBC29, December 1, 2022* Police say Charlottesville area has a gang problem, members are juveniles, Felicity Taylor, CBS19, December 1, 2022* Around Virginia, transit agencies navigate the transition to electric buses, Nathaniel Cline, Virginia Mercury, December 2, 2022Housekeeping for #465Another end of the week and another end of the program. Today we start a new series called hey Up There - about how God constantly calls us to look up here… to turn our eyes and heart to him. In this message Pastor Jeff is looking at Matthew 5, The Sermon on the Mount; what is arguably one of Jesus most famous speeches.

Having been a football player for 18 years, he had the aerobic engine and quickly went from a few k every day to participating in a 60k ultra a year later. I'm delighted to welcome Kevin Cruz, a running cult member for Satisfy Running, Arc Teryx ambassador, AM PM RC member, and employee at beloved Melbourne boutique Up There. I produce a lot of notes many of them are handwritten this since it is fast and easy to do it is slow and my thinking can keep upThere are multiple problems with handwritten notes They have a tendency to be in the notebook at home when you are not thereThey easily get out of order and can't be sortedThey cant be searched when you need to find something specificI have tried to use digital notes - e.g. writing in an app that I then can store in a repository or a file vault. It works for a few days and then I find my self with a pen in hand again. Inconsistency being a huge problem.  As the tech geek I am - I bought the Remarkable2 - an e-ink device that you can write on. A special surface giving you a paper like feeling. I have a few problems with it.The paper feeling is not really paper feeling. It is black and white onlyIt doesn't integrate well enough with other applications and notes get stuck in the device. The battery have a tendency to be out when you need to write. Not compatible with my fountainpens and my favourite green ink from pilot. I have tried a lot of tools and lately I have gotten a workflow with RocketBooks and DevonThing to work well.  RocketBook is the old - half-tech - notebook that you write on with normal pilot friXion pens. You then take a photo of the page and you can upload an OCR:ed pdf to a location of your choice. Then you can wipe the page clean with a moist cloth and reuse the page again.  In my workflow the pdf lands in an inbox in dropbox. Here I can tag them with special topic tags and when a specific "clarified" tags are added - keyboard maestro picks the file up and drops it into DevonThink. Keyboard Maestro is a tool I bought for it's multiple clipboards but has become one of my automation tools of choice. DevonThink is a document database where you can search and organise reference documentation.  Did I say that I have programmed buttons on my Stream Deck to tag and untag files? I did. This means I can quickly process and work through my inbox and move things into DevonThink with quick buttons on my Stream Deck. Once the files hit's DevonThink there are rules created to take files tagged in a specific file and move them to the correct space in the document hierarchy.  I finally found a workflow that brings my handwritten notes into a searchable format in my computer to be portable and come with me where ever I am. And I am super happy with it.  There are however improvements to it. Right now I'm tied down to rocket books. I would like to expand this to be more general. To work with my remarkable and other non RocketBook notebooks. I have been doing some experimentation and I hope I will be able to update you with additions to this workflow in a bit.  I hope you...

This Twitter Space Stefan and I share some thoughts on what options you have in storing data on a device and in the cloud on/from iOS.1. What is the goal of this space? We won't give you exact recommendations, storage is highly dependent on maaaany factors!Type of data to be stored (e.g. Booleans, Strings, Images, Large objects)Volume of data to be stored (e.g. settings options, notes app that saves users notes, offline backup for social network data)Needs to work offline?Sensitive data (encryption, data privacy, GDPR)Backed up?2. What local options are there?UserDefaultsMost basic option for small settings data (recommended use from Apple)Optimised for UIKit + SwiftUIOnly locally availableSimple local file (e.g. Text, JSON)More freedom to use a structure you wantMore risks because you have to handle all by yourselfLocal database (e.g. SQLite)provides more powerful options for querying, etc.there are wrappers around it / libraries for easier usageyou have to know what you're doingCoreDatamost powerful local optioncan have a steep learning curvegives you a lot of power and flexibility3. What online options are there?CloudKitApple's cross-platform solutioncan but does not have to be used with CoreDataStefan: planning to use it for a side-project but haven't used it beforegreat to sync data between user's devices: iOS/tvOS/iPadOS/macOS/watchOSlimitation: only Apple ecosystemmixing reports: some people had syncing issues some didn'tFirebase / Realm / AWS Amplify / Azure probably has a solution as wellnecessary for apps with collaborative features (or maybe as a convenience for account-functionality)platform-agnosticshare data between iOS/Android/Windows/Mac/Webbe aware of something called “vendor lock-in”pricing is something to keep track ofthere are horrible stories of people having incredibly high bills because of loops/bugs they had in their codeyou give up control for conveniencenot a bad thing but important to keep in mindSelf-hosted via AWS / Google Cloud / Azure / Supabase / Roll your own solution4. Some recommendationsStart small and work your way upThere are a lot of options out there, so not easy to find the correct one, but what helps is:Think about the type of data you want to storeWhen does it need to be available (online vs. offline)How secure does the data need to be stored? Please rate me on Apple Podcasts.Send me feedback on SpeakPipeOr contact me through twitterNewsletter, sign up!My book: Being a Lead Software DeveloperRunwayPut your mobile releases on autopilot and keep the whole team in sync throughout. Do You Want a $3 Million Dollar Agency? Are you often dreaming of being the proud owner of a $3 million dollar agency? Today's Agency Master Class guest is Julian Stubbs, Co-Founder and CEO of Up There, Everywhere. He and his partner are the innovators that dreamt up the concept of a global, cloud-based agency and made it a reality.   Wait, There Aren't Any Employees? That's right. Instead of employees, Up There, Everywhere has 160 MEMBERS in 20 countries. Members are freelance contractors who go through a series of interviews and if accepted, sign a confidentiality agreement. They are compensated by project value and have the benefit of flexibility to help balance work and life. The screening process is important because this work style is not for everyone. Members work remotely and all work is backed up in the cloud. There are no offices, but recently Up There, Everywhere has opened creative space in both New York and Stockholm with a third opening later this year in Amsterdam. This space is available for members to meet with clients as well as for internal collaboration as needed. How Was This Business Model Born? Walking through Central Park, Julian was inspired by seeing so many professionals working remotely... He thought about his 90-minute round-trip commute to the office everyday and calculated that his commute was taking the equivalent of 2 ½ weeks of his time every year. Together, Julian in Stockholm and his partner in New York created Up There, Everywhere in 2010. As new business was won and help was required they were faced with the challenges of bringing on new hires, such as: “How can we do more with less?”... “Would the work always be there?”... Their solution was to bring our cloud-based society to the professional world. They started talking to highly qualified professionals and developed a system for collaborating on work anytime, anywhere. Don't Clients Balk At This Arrangement? Not at all. In fact, most clients are extremely receptive to it. Typically, new clients just need to understand how their work is backed up and that it's accessible to other members if necessary. There's also a structured account team for each client, so there's built-in reliability and accountability that clients have come to expect from a more traditional agency. And Julian stresses the importance of the legally binding confidentiality agreement as well. Once clients understand the systems in place, the vast majority are open to this work style. Take a step back and evaluate your business. Run the numbers to see what's working and what's not. Figure out how can you accomplish the same work in a different way. Don't be afraid to turn things upside down and see where it takes you. If you're inspired by Julian's story, check out his books E-Ployment and Wish You Were Here. You can also check Amazon for his new book, Wish You Were Here 2, coming in March 2015. What to Remember When Building Your Million Dollar Agency So what should you take with you from today's class and apply to your own agency?
