My first encounter with the work of actor, writer, director Betsey Brown was her captivating and shocking performance in “The Scary of Sixty-First.” Then, in her first feature film “Actors,” she and her brother Peter Vack play over-the-top versions of themselves in a wildly fictional, yet super-personal exploration of their relationship that boldly pulls out all the cinematic stops. It's the kind of rare indie that gives you hope for the future of film. In this episode, she talks about the aspects of the acting craft that are central to her—patience, relaxation, fearlessness, appreciation, and the importance of the present moment—plus the unique ways she and her brother bring out the best in each other both in front of and behind the camera, and much more! Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from  Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft.  Follow Back To One on Instagram

The 92nd episode of Make Your Own Damn Podcast discusses separating art from the artist, Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion, Eyes Wide Shut, anime girls, conspiracies, and the current push to make the Republican Party appeal to young voters. Weirdly enough, all of that is relevant to this strange slice of modern trash cinema.

Sometimes some of the most frightful and dreadful stories happen in real life.  We've seen it with such things as the riots in cities, the war in Ukraine, and the Jeffrey Epstein crimes.  The latest film, THE SCARY OF SIXTY-FIRST (2022), takes the former and builds a tale around a horrific crime that shocked not only a city but the world.  Noelle (Madeline Quinn) and Addie (Betsey Brown) find a new apartment in Manhattan that would be convenient for both their work and social life.   When a mysterious woman (Dasha Nekrasova) appears, she tells Noelle how her new residence was a sex dungeon for some of Jeffrey Epstein's victims.  While the woman and Noelle research the property, Addie begins to behave oddly until finally the three young women must face a possibly dark presence besides the apartments dark history. The movie stars two of the film makers.  Dasha Nekrasova directs the movie while co-writing it with Madeline Quinn.  Released on VOD through Shudder, the film originally played at festivals where it won some awards.  The Dark Discussions co-hosts take a look at this independent film and give their thoughts.

I love doing these alternative soundtrack mixes. I believe this is the fifth one I made. Sometimes I have the mix take the soundtrack in a different direction and sometimes I simply follow the vibe of the original with all new tracks. This mix takes the later approach. For anyone not familiar with it, Severance is a series on AppleTV+, an eerie dystopia where people can sever their work life from their home life with a brain implant. Variations on the main theme are used throughout the show. It's just odd & sinister enough to leave you feeling off kilter. Here's the opening credit sequence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmS3m0OG-Ug And here's the series trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJYlG5I4rOk I was happy to have stumbled upon a collection of Erik Satie piano pieces that I've had for 40 years and found that the Gnossienne tracks worked perfectly with the feel of the Severance theme. Another common sound in the show is ticking or pulsing so you hear that in the Hans Zimmer cut and The Nick Cave track as well as a few others.  Even if you don't watch the show I hope you enjoy the mix. Whichever side of the curtain you're on we've got Red Scare podc-artist Dasha Nekrasova discussing her new feature The Scary of Sixty-First on MMM. She directed it, and plays the lead Jeffrey Epstein conspirator who drags some New Yorkers into a semi-supernatural possession problem - we're NOT saying Giallo -  and in something of an obsessive poem about high profile baddies.  In the interview we discuss the death of Queen E, making independent films, honoring Stanley Kubrick, on set health, cheeseburgers, and horror as feminist affect. Dasha is actually really sweet and not as scary as we thought she'd be. Please enjoy but also - trigger warning - we discuss some heavy topics so would like to warn listeners before they engage. The Scary of Sixty First hits cinemas nationally from December 16! Giallo. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
