In this episode Chris brings us Opinion Scholarship on the idea of a supreme, monotheistic God as expressed in the Neoplatonic idea of "The One" or "The Monad." We explore the commonalities between Christian Monotheism and Neoplatonism and speculate on the fertile ground for the emergency of this idea prepared by the pre-Socratics and Plato himself. We take a deep dive into Plotinus, Porphyry and Proclus, their descriptions of mystical experience and see see how they rationalizations their mystical intuitions with logic and reason. We then discuss altered states of consciousness, the ancient Greek mysteries and depth psychology to bring this all together. Enjoy ;)

Today we continue with our inquiry into rhetoric and dialectic, with Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Pirsig, like Nietzsche, saw himself as a modern-day Sophist, and part of his work was the rescue of the Sophistic school from the ill repute visited upon them by the Socratics. Perhaps more expansively, Pirsig devotes his philosophical work to the question, “What is quality?”, drawing on the Greek concept of arete, or excellence. His philosophical ideas do not come to us through a dispassionate treatise, however, but through an autobiographical novel. Pirsig was treated with electroshock therapy, leaving him with a new personality, and the feeling that the person he once was is dead: he merely happens to carry the blurry memories of another man. While on a motorcycle trip with his son, Pirsig struggles to unify the dichotomy between classical and romantic, between substance and form, between the two personalities within himself, and between himself and his son. This work remains one of the most important philosophical contributions to American literature in the 20th century, and hopefully today I can show all of you why this work of “pop philosophy” is one of my favorite books, and one to which I regularly return.

In this episode, I attempt to give a fresh biographical account of Nietzsche's life, by examining his life in light of his Three Metamorphoses of the Spirit, found in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In the course of this biography, using Nietzsche as our concrete example, we discuss the abstract meaning of the Camel, the Lion & the Child, and where I see these transformations appearing in the course of Nietzsche's life and thought. We've covered Nietzsche's biography in many previous episodes, often focusing in on a particular time or event in Nietzsche's life: Nietzsche's wandering throughout Europe (episode 2), the headstone he bought for his father (episode 4), the departure of academia and break with his friends (episode 24), the complex relationship with Wagner (episodes 36-37). Rather than examining any one part of his biography in granular detail, we're going to try and take in the entire picture, and see to what degree we can say that the Camel, the Lion & the Child are stages in Nietzsche's own story. Central to this analysis is Nietzsche's great struggle with the "problem of life", as put forward by Christianity, Schopenhauer, and the Socratics. Their solutions always incline towards a rejection of our nature and the submission of life to reason, virtue, or asceticism. Nietzsche's long quest is to discover an affirmation of life and desire, in contrast to the need to 'redeem' life from suffering. This mirrors his long struggle with an illness that tormented him throughout his life. Nietzsche's project culminates not in a condemnation of life on these grounds, but in his embrace of a life of agony.

English Description (German below)Guest: Dorthea FredeThere is magic in every beginning. Socrates is such a beginning for Western philosophy. Before him, too, there was philosophizing, but with Socrates, as we read in the historiography of philosophy, philosophical reflection takes on a different twist. But this Socrates knew above all that he knew nothing...and then also in the most important questions of the life! We have asked Dorothea Frede, what makes this philosopher so special, that all thinkers before him were even subsumed under the term "pre-Socratics" and no following generation can get around this Athenian troublemaker. A selection of Thoreau's verses taken from "Walden" and various Journals written by him. Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) was an American philosopher, poet, a leading transcendentalist, and environmental scientist whose major work, Walden, draws upon each of these identities in meditating on the concrete problems of living in the world as a human being. He sought to revive a conception of philosophy as a way of life, not only a mode of reflective thought and discourse. Thoreau's work was informed by an eclectic variety of sources. He was well-versed in classical Greek and Roman philosophy, ranging from the pre-Socratics through the Hellenistic schools, and was also an avid student of the ancient scriptures and wisdom literature of various Asian traditions.

The final passage of book 3! I could not believe what I read when I opened the book to read this passage! If you have seen the Republic for Modern Life videos and thus know the details of events in my own life you will have a great context for the amazing ability the universe is showing myself right now to align things.  Those videos are on the same youtube channel as the link below, which is to a more recent video which I uploaded the day prior to recording this podcast, a video discussing why the Chief Crime Commissioner and Deputy Mayor of West Yorkshire, is using the Police Force as part of the agenda outlined in the Republic for Modern Life.  Of course the content of that video, if in the right hands will lead to justice for myself and many others resulting in her imprisonment.  It therefore is not a coincidence that she has used the police force once more in an attempt to stop me doing what is right. The same evening, after the video was uploaded, at 11:15pm, the police rang by buzzer and I manage to avoid letting them in as you will hear in this episode.  But it is because of this content that they will now stop at nothing to make sure I am silenced and their lies and corruption stay hidden in Yorkshire and thus attempting to save themselves and their police chief, Alison Lowe, from imprisonment.  It really is incredible for the timing to be such that this passage is read the following day at this time! Most people agree that nearly everything human is a mixture of both genetic inputs and cultural inputs. The question is about where the dividing line lies.Cecilia Heyes is a senior research fellow in theoretical life sciences and a professor of psychology at All Souls College at the University of Oxford. She also authored the book “Cognitive Gadgets: The Cultural Evolution of Thinking.”Cecilia and Greg talk in depth about theory of mind from early childhood development to how it is interpreted across different cultures, and dive into the debate between nature and culture that's been around since the pre-Socratics.Episode Quotes:Theory of the mind in different cultures: We tend to call it theory of mind or mind reading, wherever in the world we find it. In fact, mind reading or theory of mind is our way of predicting behavior. Other cultures have ways of predicting and explaining each other's behavior which depend much less on the ascription of thoughts and feelings.Imitation and caregivers:So there is some evidence that people who when they were infants, their mothers were depressed, show a weaker capacity to imitate facial expressions and so on. A depressed person is less emotionally reactive to others. So whereas typically parents will mirror the facial expressions of their infant. Inadvertently, they're giving the infant the opportunity to see what they, the infant looked like when they do something that feels like this. And that's the capacity which is crucial for imitation. You've gotta be able to map the feel onto the sight. And a parent mirroring back facial expressions is crucial to learning that. And depressed mothers quite understandably are doing less of that mirroring.Learning imitation:Dancers in particular, those wall mirrors which are very often in dance studios, mean that every move you make in that room, you feel yourself doing it as it were, you've got the internal feedback from the performance. You can feel the muscles stretching and so on. And that is being correlated with the sight of yourself doing it from the outside. And it's that kind of experience, that kind of sensory motor correlation, which is building your capacity to imitate.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at All Souls College at the University of OxfordProfessional Profile at The British AcademyCecilia Heyes on TwitterHer work:Cecilia Heyes on Google ScholarCognitive Gadgets: The Cultural Evolution of Thinking

Yes, you read that correctly! Over 2000 years ago the Romans were designing homes with outdoor spaces and were also creating virtual nature walls. They had ambitions to create healthier cleaner air, wanted improved scents and less noise pollution specifically to improve health and wellbeing. I speak with Dr Patty Baker, about her research on identifying the connection between Roman conceptions of “pure air” and physical and mental health in Pompeiian gardens, and especially on the mutli-sensory approach the Romans took to ancient medicine. This is the first of a few podcasts with Patty, so be sure to bookmark the podcast or sign up to the newsletter on our website. Why was nature so important in the ancient world? Even in the Ancient Greek world, way back in the 5th century BC, the pre-Socratics believed that we were part of nature and that out health was affected by our environment. They believed that we are made from the same four elements as nature: Earth, Air, Fire and Water made up everything: humans, animals, plants. Later in the Roman period we see writers such as Pliny the Younger writing in the late 1st century AD, describing how he wants to escape the city of Rome, the pollution and noise. How he longs for his villas in the mountains, or by Lake Como, how he wants “pure air”. It is this search for what “pure air” meant to the Romans that has led Patty to research how they identified it, and for us interested in Biophilic Design in the built environment, the results are very interesting. For the Romans “pure / clear air” was green, it was perceived as a heathy colour. White air such as bright sunlight, blue also was good, such as that you find on a clear blue day. Air that moves, so not stagnant and also not smokey. Scent was good, just a mild sent, such as mountain air. Nature was divine. To revisit the Pre-socratic philosophers we are reminded that for them they believed that there were water nymphs for instance, and you didn't want to annoy a semi-divine water nymph (if you're bored go check out the retribution they wreak on those who do!). Maybe we could do well to feel a little more respect of our nature too.One of the key things that I find interesting is just how important the ancient world considered their environment was to their health. How they felt it had a “direct” impact on their wellbeing. For the atomists for instance, they believed that little atoms of what you saw and experienced around you actually entered into you. So for instance, the small entered your brain through your tongue, sound theory your ears. They believed that your brought your environment “into” you. So you can see already why they felt having a pure healthy environment was a key feature of a healthy life. Even Vitruvius, writing on architecture in the 1st century AD describes how you need to design buildings and spaces away from unhealthy smells, eg. sewers, fullers (who used urine), marshes, anywhere where there was stagnation and bad fetid air. This carried on through to the 4th century AD where Vegetius writing on a designing and location different spaces, this time for the military, suggests they also avoid such places for the same reasons.Looking at the archaeology of the Roman gardens in Pompeii we can see how they positioned the gardens at the back of the house, away from the noise and smells of the Main Street at the front, creating a haven to eat, live, be at peace. They decorated their walls with murals, mosaics of nature, beautiful virtual nature walls, frescos of trees, plants, water, clear skies. They often had water features in them, so the sound of running water they realised was important to them. They had shade in the form of a portico running around the edge of them creating shade. I think for those who already appreciate Biophilic Design elements we can see how garden design in the ancient world was a forerunner of elements that we aim to incorporate now. Patty describes the house of Olivia, the wife of Emperor Augustus which was built on the edge of Rome. The virtual nature wall is stunning, the detail is phenomena right down to showing how they pruned their plants (you can see the cut marks). The care and keep of the plants around them was important to them. In the images painted on the walls are citrons, pine trees, pomegranates, cypress, flowers, bird life, calming colours blues, greens and absolute fecundity in the colours of the plants in full bloom. In terms of Civic planning, even in the cities, they built public parks near theatres and baths so people had access to green spaces. They didn't get everything right in the Ancient World, but with this podcast I wanted to address the fact that Biophilic Design principles have been appreciated for thousands of years (yes including into the Renaissance and beyond), and to those urban planners, maybe taking a leaf from an age old book isn't such a bad thing. Sometimes people don't like to be the first, they don't like to put their neck on the line in case they get it wrong. But, take heart, you'll have a few thousand years worth of design philosophy and practice backing you up.To find out more about Patty's work please connect with her at : www.paxinnature.com or Linkedin. How Do We Know Stuff?Humans have always wondered about how we're able to know stuff. Though we have consciousness, can we have certainty? This episode explores the problem with perspective through rationalism and empiricism; reason and logic versus experience and sensory observation. Certainty is elusive and if we are gonna know anything, rationalism and empiricism might want to work together. Overview: The story of Hiroo Onoda. Plato's "Cave Analogy" and the Theory of Forms Rationalism - the mind can know things independently of physical reality. Empiricism - knowledge is gained from sensory experience. Various philosopher's takes on the debate (including pre-Socratics, Plato, Aristotle, Skepticism, Stoicism, Al Kindi, Al Ghazali, Montaigne, Descartes, Hume, Kant, & Thomas Aquinas). Why you need both and that certainty is elusive - because your perspective is limited, finite, and fragile.

According to the historical evidence, the first stirrings of philosophical inquiry began 2600 years ago in ancient Greece with a group of thinkers known as the Presocratics (or pre-Socratics). In this episode we try to shed light on these early pioneers of philosophy. Our guest is André Laks, professor of ancient philosophy at Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City. Laks is the co-editor of the recent 9-volume Harvard Loeb edition of the early Greek philosophical fragments – the first comprehensive edition to be made in over a hundred years.  Stay tuned at the end of the episode for a chance to win an autographed, hard-cover edition of Laks' book The Concept of Presocratic Philosophy.  ------------------ The intro to this episode was provided by host Drew Vahrencamp of Wonders of the World, a podcast that explores the most amazing historical sites around the world and the stories behind them (plus travel & food tips for visiting them). A while back, I had a very enjoyable time speaking to Scott Foster from Dominion Capital Management, who is not your typical Trader. He draws from a wide range of influences such as Aristotle, Magic, and Austrian Economics. I am delighted to share some of these deep insights with you in this short blog post, and I hope you enjoy these unique views and observations from Scott.  If you would like to listen to the full conversation just go to Top Traders Unplugged Episode 27 and Episode 28. A Blend of Philosophy & Psychology in the Markets Scott:  I approach the whole trading situation from a real blend of philosophy and psychology. We've talked a little bit about the psychology stuff, not a lot, but the philosophy really to me was a bigger element, a bigger issue in terms of pushing me in a certain direction in how my trading is going to look and what I needed to do to support a particular style of trading. That goes back to it's a gradual process that's happening in those earlier years that I was talking about trading for myself and trading for this small trading group that I put together and then my experiences - my three years as a Senior Trader at A.L. Management. You go through this whole process and as the whole time I'm looking at what is my strategy? How do I want to approach the markets? What is my strength? What do I want to do? I kept having a problem reconciling all the different strategies that I was reading about. There was a certain philosophical hiccup in my brain that I could not get my arms around. What it was, was the fact that my background in philosophy is more geared toward ancient philosophy. My father got me turned on the Aristotle and Plato and the Socratics at an early age and he was my professor for a lot of my classes in college. I was either well educated or brainwashed; I'm not sure which perspective I want to take, but I had a real passion for the classics and Aristotelian logic in particular. So the markets that I'm looking at I'm thinking OK, how do I want to trade? I'm thinking do I want to be...it seemed to me it didn't matter what I picked. If I was going to trade the markets on a fundamental basis, I am basically saying that I am looking back in the past and I'm looking at certain fundamentals that would make something cheap or expensive or that's what everybody says, that this stocks to use ratio the price ought to be X, or when this happens, or whatever, if you are in the stock market, the PE ratio. "For my field of study, which is Epistemology - the theory of knowledge - how do you know you know? How can you validate or verify anything that you know, and what gives you any confidence in what you believe is true?" You are looking at all these different events in the past and you are saying this will tell me in the future what value is and what it ought to be. If I am a technical trader I am going to look at the past and say here's a head and shoulders pattern and most of the time if that happens in the past... I've counted 75 times that it's happened out of X it seems to point in the future that this is going to happen. Pick a strategy, any strategy, at the end of the day I ran into a real difficulty with trying to understand just because it's happened in the past why does that mean it's going to happen in the future? For my field of study, which is epistemology, which is the theory of knowledge - how do you know you know? How can you validate or verify anything that you know and what give you any confidence in what you believe is true? Niels:  So universal truth I guess. Scott:  Exactly and that's what Aristotle basically said. He basically invented logic as what everybody accepted for 2,000 years. Everybody has been debating over the last 100 years or so whether it was right or not. He said in classical logic and syllogistic logic that when we put these propositions together: all men are mortal, Socrates is a man therefore Socrates is mortal,

Hank Unplugged: Essential Christian Conversations

Atheists are launching a new wave of attacks against Christianity and faith in God, claiming that they have a more enlightened, scientific, and sophisticated worldview. Despite what these New Atheists might think, this is nothing new, and Dr. Louis Markos confronts these recycled claims in his book Atheism on Trial, showing that they have already been disproven by Christian thinkers of the past and how you can use the same solid logic to silence these claims today. On this edition of Hank Unplugged, Markos joins Dr. Larry Johnston (pinch-hitting for Hank while he is overseas speaking at a conference) to discuss why it is time for Christians to stand up and challenge the atheistic assertions of popular narratives of our day. Are you ready to put atheism on trial? Topics discussed include: the modernist narrative and the problem with "chronological snobbery" (2:30); the distinction between narrative and metanarrative and the significance of metanarratives (5:55); the importance of obtaining objective distance to better understand our behaviors and reactions (10:50); do we live in a clockwork universe? (15:00); looking to the pre-Socratics to show that the so-called "New Atheists" are merely pedaling old ideas (19:50); the theistic implications of the Big Bang and how dedicated materialists such as Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking avoided them (25:30); "Houdini hermeneutics and the sense in which Darwinism is a myth" (32:00); who was Spinoza, and what did he mean when he said that God and nature are one? (38:00); examining intelligent design and some of the absurd theories people have come up with to avoid it, such as panspermia (41:35); why David Hume was wrong when he said that miracles are impossible (49:25); how God reveals Himself through both creation and the Bible and why it is important for Christians to be conversant in both (1:00:20); examining the problem of pain (1:05:45); comparing the God of Abraham from the god of Aristotle (1:10:05); how Karl Marx changed the metanarrative in an extremely destructive way (1:13:30); how the secular enlightenment stole the idea of human dignity from the Judeo-Christian ethic (1:19:00); and Christianity and Stoicism (1:20:20).

Michael Lerner, PhD Archetypal Psychology: The Role of Soul in Daily Life Join Michael Lerner in this discussion about his studies and journey with archetypal psychology. James Hillman, a Jungian analyst, founded archetypal psychology to explore the power of archetypes and the place of soul in our psyches and daily lives. Thomas Moore popularized Hillman’s sometimes obscure writings. We’ll trace the lineage of archetypal psychology from the pre-Socratics through medieval and contemporary sources as a great tradition of Western psychology that complements Buddhist and other Eastern psychological traditions. Useful homework for listening to the podcast: 1. Read the Wikipedia entries on both Hillman and Moore, and background entries on Carl Jung and the Sufi scholar Henry Corbin. Note especially Corbin’s seminal book about the Sufi mysticism of Ibn Arabi, Alone with the Alone. 2. If possible, read any of Hillman and Moore’s books. Suggested: James Hillman, The Soul’s Code, The Force of Character and the Lasting Life, or A Blue Fire; Thomas Moore, Care of the Soul, Dark Nights of the Soul, or Soul Mates 3. Don’t do any of the above but come with an open and inquiring mind. Michael Lerner, PhD Michael is the president and co-founder of Commonweal and of Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts in Washington, D.C. His principle work at Commonweal is with the Cancer Help Program, the Collaborative on Health and the Environment, and The New School at Commonweal. He is author of Choices in Healing: Integrating the Best of Conventional and Complementary Therapies (MIT Press). He has spent the past months reading intensively in archetypal psychology and wants to share the exploration with New School friends. Find out more about The New School at tns.commonweal.org.
