On this episode of OptOutcast, Climate Editor Amanda Magnani brings you inside COP 28, the United Nations' yearly climate conference, which took place last year in Dubai from Nov. 30-Dec. 13. The event was the largest one to date, with an attendance of nearly 100,000 people. On the one hand, it was marked by exciting announcements, such as the Loss and Damage Fund and the treaty to triple renewable energy. On the other hand, it hosted around 2,400 oil lobbyists and a final text that, while representing some progress, was also seen by many as a huge let down. Throughout the episode, you will hear the sounds of the venue, from the moment Amanda arrives and goes through security to important announcements and the everyday lives of journalists covering the event. To better understand the event, its history, and impact, she talks to Sophie Davies, Chris Wright, and Shreeshan Venkatesh, three journalists from different parts of the world with a long history of covering COPs. Sophie Davies is a Barcelona-based journalist and editor at OptOut's participating outlet Gas Outlook, an independent publication launched by Global Strategic Communications Council – GSCC, about the global green energy transition of the fossil fuels sector. Sophie and Amanda met for coffee at Expo Dubai to discuss their experiences at COP 28, the progress of negotiations, empty announcements, and the massive presence of oil lobbyists. Chris Wright is an Australian journalist and founder of Climate Tracker, an NGO dedicated to supporting climate journalists around the world, especially in the Global South. It was through a Climate Tracker fellowship that Amanda was able to attend COP 28 in person. Chris, who has been attending and covering COPs since 2011, talks about how the event and its coverage have evolved over the past decade and a half, and how the petrostate status of COP 28's host, the UAE, meant for the event and the negotiations. Shreeshan Venkatesh is an Indian environment and science journalist and editorial head at CarbonCopy, a knowledge platform that tracks developments in the climate and energy sector. He spoke about the first ever Global Stocktake about the main issues regarding fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions for the Global South and about how world leaders usually try to control the narrative in the early days of every COP. On this episode myself and Sophie Davies from Smashed Prawns in a Milky Basket & It's an S Pod Thing are headed to Springfield to discuss one of the most famous families in all of pop culture, The Simpsons. Very few shows, if any, have had the kind of impact the Simpsons has had in its thirty-year run; so naturally it's a topic for this very podcast. We talk mainly around what is known as the ‘golden period of the show' (i.e. the first eight seasons or so) and try to unpack what it was that made it so iconic. Characters, episodes, references and clips galore are all packed into the wonderful conversation with Sophie. Food brands need to work out what consumers will be eating in future, but how do they go about it, and what happens if they get it wrong? In this edition of the Table Talk podcast, we look at the business of predicting people's eating habits. How do companies work out what we'll all be reaching for in the supermarket in five years' time? What is the cost to them if they get it wrong? And how often do they get it right? Stefan Gates is joined by Sophie Davies, Senior Buyer at Planet Organic, and Mike Hughes, Head of Insight and Research at FMCG Gurus to try to answer those questions. They offer their insights into how the industry works, as well as setting out their predictions for 2022. Sophie (It's An S Pod Thing!) and Barbara (Over/underated: a music podcast with Babs and Fran) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Sophie's choice School of Rock. School of Rock is a 2003 comedy directed by Richard Linklater and starring Jack Black as Dewey Finn, a failing rock musician who pretends to be his best friend Ned filling in as a substitute teacher and consequently uses his pupils to enter a Battle of the Bands competition. It also co-stars Joan Cusack as the uptight Principal ”Roz" Mullins, Sarah Silverman as Ned's nagging girlfriend and Mike White (who wrote the film) as Ned Schneebly, Dewy's best friend and the real Mr Schneebly. Not a musical but there is a stage musical adaptation it was the highest-grossing music-themed comedy of all time until 2015. If High Fidelity was Black's breakout film, School of Rock put him firmly into the mainstream and it is very much his film and still his most known and loved character. [supsystic-tables id=246] School of Rock scored very highly for recommendability and repeat viewing from Sophie and Babs but slightly lower scores for engagement gives an overall rating of a very respectable 4.08. With Luke struck down with a cold, Matt is joined by site contributor Sophie Davies to review BBC1's new comedy-drama The Outlaws. New BBC One drama Showtrial and the welcome return of 'What We Do in the Shadows' on BBC Two and iPlayer.
Barbara (Over/underated: a music podcast with Babs and Fran) and Sophie (It's An S Pod Thing!) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Babs choice Superbad. Superbad is a 2007 coming of age comedy starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as school friends Seth, Evan and Fogel (McLovin), directed by Greg Mottola and produced by Judd Apatow. Determined to lose their virginity before going to college Seth and Evan get invited to Jules party and promise to buy the booze with Fogel's fake McLovin ID. Of course nothing goes to plan and McLovin is kidnapped by two police officers (Bill Haded and Seth Rogen) while Seth and Evan end up at a bizarre house party in a quest to secure the booze that will impress the girls enough for them to sleep together. It's difficult to view Superbad's main narrative of getting girls drunk enough to sleep with Seth and Evan and the endless stream of homophobic jokes as being harmless and of it's time - it's questionable how funny it was is 2007. That said Jonah Hill is still brilliant and there are some painfully accurate moments of teenage male friendship to just about redeem it. [supsystic-tables id=230] In light of being viewed in 2020 scores for Superbad from Flixwatcher and guests were pretty even and everyone was in agreement - averaging a three for recommendability to score 3.25 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Superbad? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! From a youth rounding up and shearing sheep on her family farm to backpacking around Latin America in her twenties, it can't be said Australia's ambassador to Colombia, Sophie Davies, was born with a silver spoon in her mouth.Outside of giving us her opinion as to why Australia continues to attract many Colombian students, the ambassador tells us that while relations between the two countries go back some time, the opening of the embassy in 2017 has led to an upsurge in Australians doing business here.On that front, as she enters what could be her final year in the role, one of her hopes is to see an Australian-Colombian Free Trade Agreement enacted. And while an Australian country girl at heart, her Latino husband, dual-nationality children and years spent in this part of the world, all mean she can proudly say she feels "half Latina"!*******De una juventud donde ella arreó y esquiló las ovejas en su finca familiar y luego a los veinte años viajó como mochilera en América Latina, no podemos decir que la embajadora australiana a Colombia, Sophie Davies, nació en una cuna de oro.
