How does a leadership development coach see engagement at work? Stan Peake chats with Adam about his view of engagement, which according to Stan starts with the leader. It's up to the leader to ensure mission alignment. Long term employee engagement comes from a purpose bigger than the individual and bigger than the leader. People have a choice about how hard they want to work. If your culture can compel and align your people around a purpose and the importance of the work you do, then you can bring forward their passion, creativity, and commitment. This is engagement. Culture sounds easy to define, but the nuances and the effort to implement culture are complex. A leader needs to know what matters to their teams so they can attain mission alignment. What impact do culture and engagement have on leadership skills? Tune in to find out. Stan Peake is back for a new conversation! We jumped right into the good stuff today, starting out by discussing his upcoming book and the vital importance of building bridges between generations (and Gen X's important role in that). We go on to talk about the "hockey assist" as a model for leadership, and many of the changing paradigms around where we work and how we work. Btw, Stan has narrowed the title of his new book down to two contenders. And while the book won't be out until closer to Summer 2023, that title will be official VERY soon. If you want to know what it is, and maybe get on that pre-order train ;), click on one of the links below to get to either his website or his LinkedIn profile. Stan Peake was born to be a coach. Stan’s first foray into running his own business was when he started a personal training business at the age of 21. At 31 he bought into his second business, which went through a merger and acquisition by a larger holding company. Stan later founded InSite Performance Coaching LTD in 2015 “to help values-based leaders live their dreams”. In Stan’s words (and InSite’s # 1 Core Value), “it’s better to be scared and uncomfortable passionately chasing your dreams than it is to be comfortable but unfulfilled”. Stan continues to build InSite to help achieve its vision of helping 10,000 values-based to leaders live their dreams! Stan shares his story with Matt and Dan how he turned what could have been a low point in his life, breaking his back in a mountain biking accident just as he was starting off InSite, into a time when he took massive action and managed to get massive results. Stan’s experience in and techniques for coaching business owners and leaders was one of the reasons he was able to turn this moment of adversity into personal triumph and inspiration for others. He then goes on share how he gets people who are struggling to take action to get moving, how to maximise on risks business owners take, how to deal with disappointment and keep going and, finally, how following-up can make or break your business. Leaders Of Transformation | Leadership Development | Conscious Business | Global Transformation
Leadership is not a job title, it's a mission. This is the underlying principle that Stan Peake teaches and practices every day. As a coach and leader of leaders, Stan empowers people to bring out the best in their teams, by inspiring leaders with a mission greater than themselves. In today's interview, we explore the definition of true leadership, the contrast between great leadership and poor leadership, how to identify a good mentor to grow with, and the importance of confidence and self-assurance as a leader, being comfortable leading those smarter than you. Whether you're a parent raising children, or a leader in business, sports, or otherwise, Stan provides a valuable perspective on what leadership is, and what it is not, as well as how leadership has changed in the past 20-30 years. Enjoy! Key Takeaways 1) A true leader develops leaders who develop leaders. 2) What happens when the leader moves on? Does the legacy live on? That is the mark of a good leader. 3) In the 80's and 90's, the leader was the smartest person in the room. Not anymore. Today as a leader, you want to surround yourself with people smarter than you. 4) Great leadership is NOT about having all the answers. It's empowering people to find the answers themselves. 5) Great leaders allow people to go through some adversity so they come out stronger, more wise, and better prepared for the next situation. 6) 80% of discretionary effort put forth by teams is as a result of leadership and culture. 7) Great leaders want to pass on credit to their teams. Favorite Quotes 1) "Leadership is not a job title, it's a mission." 2) "Good parenting is allowing your kids to fail in your presence so they can succeed in your absence." Same goes for leading a team. 3) "We don't hire smart people to tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do." Steve Jobs Connect With Stan Peake Online www.InsitePerformanceCoaching.com @coach_peake Stan Peake Bio Barrett Cultural Transformation Tools Practitioner, Level 2 Graduate Certificate in Values Based Leadership, Royal Roads University Queens School of Business alumnus, Sales Leadership 1% For The Planet Member Stan Peake was born to be a coach. Through his first passion, football, Stan met one of his great mentors, his high school football coach, whom he credits for his initial interest and passion for pursuing coaching. After a neck injury ended Stan's playing days in 1996, he began a career in personal training, and began coaching football. Stan found that he could transfer his football coaching skills into coaching clients as they endured his trademark brutal workouts! Years of training, education, and study led Stan to teach continuing education at several Calgary area fitness facilities, and eventually to coaching newer trainers and his first foray into leadership, circa 2001. Stan's approach to leadership was always as a coach, not a manager. At the core of his coaching style in those days was a care for each team member, not just their position, as well as a keen sense of accountability to achieving one's goals, both personal and professional. Through starting his own personal training business, to buying into one of Calgary's premier fitness operations, Stan's passion for fitness led to a passion for leadership and entrepreneurism. He later helped oversee a merger with a medical screening company, wherein coaching skills were needed to merge 2 very disparate cultures, as well as keen strategic planning skills to help in a new 14,000 sq ft facility design. After 18 years in the fitness industry, leading teams of trainers, paramedical therapists, administrators, kinesiologists, and health coaches, Stan decided coaching, not fitness, was his true calling. Returning to school for graduate studies in Values-Based Leadership at Royal Roads University in 2014, Stan became a certified practitioner in cultural transformation tools and has applied these tools with up and coming leaders, senior executives, leadership teams and entire organizations. Stan later attended Queens School of Business in 2015 as part of their executive education program, specializing in Sales Leadership. Stan decided it was finally time to open his own coaching business after researching the market for coaching for entrepreneurs, and found a gap in the industry when it came to innovators and startups who could not afford $2,500+/ month for coaching. Since incorporating InSite Performance Coaching, Stan has worked with leaders and business owners from Vancouver to Toronto and in industries ranging from electrical to fitness to legal, as well as social enterprises with a variety of focuses. In addition to coaching entrepreneurs and business leaders, Stan also serves as a keynote speaker on a variety of topics in the areas of success, business, sales and finding one's purpose. When not working, Stan enjoys travel, spending time with his wife Maria and son Chase, and tackling his infamous ‘bucket list'.
