Exploring the dangers of forced positivity and the importance of embracing all emotions for genuine connection and well-being. In this episode, ex rugby league pro Stevie Ward explore the downsides of forced positivity and why closing off to the full spectrum of feelings is a bad idea - and saps us of strength and authenticity. It's about acknowledging and embracing feelings like sadness and fear, rather than suppressing them. We discuss how inauthenticity can be perceived as a threat and why identifying with our roles contributes to inauthenticity. We even touch on what we can learn from pre-egoic toddlers - who truly embody genuine inauthenticity, which people can't help but be drawn towards. The Leadership Enigma

Stevie Ward is the former captain of the Leeds Rhinos Super League Rugby team, winner of the Super League and Challenge Cup and he was also one of the youngest captains aged only 26. Stevie had 10 operations during his playing career and had to retire early due to a brain injury. This is a powerful episode of humility, vulnerability and resilience. Stevie was lucky enough to play for Leeds during the 'Golden Generation' playing with a number of England Internationals including the late Rob Burrows. He made his debut at 18 years old sharing his formative years doing battle on the professional rugby field. I explore Stevie's background to try and understand what allowed him to find the the strength to enter professional rugby at such a young age with maximum intensity and dedication to being the best he could be. Stevie was named captain at just 26 years old and this official leadership role meant he felt the enormous pressure to perform and succeed which initially led to a feel of overwhelm and essentially sub optimal performance. Stevie remembers the toughest times when the team lost their unique identify and didn't know who they were which translated into poor performances on the pitch. The team needed to overcome fear and reflect on how they could leverage their unique differences and personalities to create something special, authentic and compelling as a team. How could they create their own high performing culture? There is so much uncertainty in a Rugby League team amongst a group of warriors who needed to create a high level of psychological safety for all the players to all feel able to bring their best without fear of failure and or criticism.A brain injury (multiple concussions) forced Stevie to step away from professional rugby whilst he was in his prime. To this day he still feels the effects of the injuries he suffered on the pitch and he has had to completely reassess who he is and what he is passionate about.Stevie filmed a Sky Sports documentary 6-8 months after stepping away from the game and he initially hoped that he would actually be able to return to the game but even attending the stadium as a spectator for the documentary, Stevie found was a sensory overload and he had to leave at half time. Stevie also emotionally remembers his friendship and playing time with Rob Burrows who fought very publicly against motor neurone disease but unfortunately passed away in June 2024. Stevie hosts 'Mantality' and works with individuals and organisations focused on the importance of mental health, psychological safety, courage, humility and masculine vulnerability, all potentially a paradox with the brutal and competitive world of professional rugby. Stevie became the youngest grand final winner ever, won 3 Grand Finals, 2 Challenge Cups and was named captain at just 26. Amongst the highs, Stevie endured 10 operations, several mental health struggles, and had to retire from a brain injury at the age of 27. Stevie launched Mantality in 2016, inspiring conversation around mental health for men. Mantality now offers counselling and life-coaching services and engages people through a stigma-breaking podcast. Throughout all of the winning and losing in life, Stevie believes that the truest form of resilience is to realise the potential of our true selves. Stevie put this to the test by leading culture meetings as a captain of the Rhinos team in rugby league, one of the toughest sports there is. Promoting authenticity formed championship-winning teams and formidable relationships. Stevie believes that authenticity is the only thing that aligns success with fulfilment, and we all crave it. Stevie shatters the stigma around expressing how we truly feel in an increasingly complicated world. He has realised that authenticity aligns success with personal fulfilment, revolutionises internal comms and is essential for us to connect. And this is why I'm excited to bring you this conversation with Stevie. I believe authenticity is lacking in many HP departments primarily because of reasons such as low psychological safety, the value of depth of knowledge over the ability to share knowledge and the hierarchical nature of sport that restricts true collaboration. Talking Points: How Stevie gained awareness of the importance of being truly authentic to form formidable relationships. Why engineering smallness is prevalent is performance sport How sport focuses on the technical elements (told who we are meant to be, no one buys into) Blaming, shaming, fearing culture of sport and how to change it Inner compass and leadership - Stevie's perspective on this What the catalyst was to turn Stevie's awareness within himself The power of feeling safe without removal of threat If you enjoy this episode please leave a review on iTunes or Spotify platforms, and by doing this you will actively help in spreading this content to the practitioners that need it. For a guy trained to put his body on the line, he's remarkably in touch with his emotions and his vulnerability, and he's got an extraordinary personal story to tell. In UK elite sport, he's a huge name.In 2019 Stevie suffered a head injury in a game against Wigan. He was diagnosed with debilitating concussion, which led to him retiring from the game at just 27 at the start of 2020. His long journey of physical and mental recovery from brain injury, through lockdown and beyond, has shaped a passion for opening up the conversation about mental health.Throughout all of the winning and losing in life, Stevie believes that the truest form of resilience is to realise the potential of our true selves. Stevie put this to the test by leading culture meetings as a captain of the Rhinos team. Promoting authenticity formed championship-winning teams and formidable relationships. He channelled his own mental health challenges into Mantality, a movement where men can be vulnerable, address our mental health and then take up the responsibility to do something about it, to go find meaning and purpose within our lives. 25% of people in the UK suffer with a mental health problem each year, so Mantality is committed to donating 25% of all profits to offering immediate psychological support to young people who need it.And Stevie launched the Mantality podcast to discuss mental health openly and freely with athletes at the top of their game and role-model celebrities. I've listened and it's a really great conversation.Stevie's is a tough journey but I'm so impressed with how he has turned personal adversity into a mission to make a difference around mental health. Stevie Ward is an ex-professional rugby league player and former captain of the Leeds Rhinos before recently choosing to step away from the game due to a concussion injury. Stevie's career demonstrates not only the highest of highs in sport, with being a two time Grand Final and a Challenge Cup winner, but also the devastating adversities that come with them, 10 operations and 3 major concussions all before the age of 27. His story not only shows the boyhood dream of representing his home town club but also the shear grit that it takes to get there. Along with this his ability to keep cutting through the adversity to maintain this position has been truly inspiring. But maybe more inspiring is his work he has been doing along side playing over the past 5 years which he has recently transitioned into full time. Stevie has become a key figure in the sporting community for progressing conversations and culture around mental health after he launched his company Mantality in 2016. This work has led him to delivering resilience, values, and purpose workshops within his team the Leeds Rhinos and other high-performance institutions such as the NHS, Arup Engineering and a number of Universities. Along with this he continues to share amazing stories on the Mantality Podcast and helps people to evolve through his online community showing them how to train their mental health as well as their physical health. In this conversation we talk about his recovery from a career ending head injury last year and how he is coping with the continued symptoms of concussion. We talk about his highlights from his career playing for Leeds Rhinos and how a long list of injuries has led him to some mental health challenges but then creating his company Mantality off the back of it. He talks about his 'Evolve' programme which helps people 'train their mental health regime' with the practice of gratitude forming a key part of that. Dr Willie Stewart is Consultant Neuropathologist and holds honorary Associate Professor status at the University of Glasgow (Institute of Neuroscience & Psychology) and the University of Pennsylvania (Department of Neurosurgery).  This podcast is a brutal conversation about the realities of brain injury caused by a concussion.  In this episode, we defined what a concussion actually is and how it is currently tested. We compared Boxing to Rugby and Football and discussed the evidence to show that multiple concussions can have very serious & in some cases life-threatening consequences.  The episode is hosted by Stevie Ward who is currently suffering the long term effects of concussion and Chris O'Connor who has had a similar experience previously. Both Stevie and Chris found this podcast hard-hitting and scary to learn the science behind brain injury; Something, as a society, we know very little about.  Is it the employer's responsibility to look after their players? What does the future for testing look like? And how can we ensure protocols are strong enough & adhered to in our amateur games? It's all in this episode.  We are committed to starting a conversation around brain injury in sport. Please leave a review and jump into the conversation on our Instagram page.

I am joined by former Leeds Rhinos Captain Stevie Ward on today's episode. Recently Stevie made the decision to retire from Rugby League at age 27 due to concussion, something that is a real concern in the world of collision sports at the moment. During the chat we spoke about life after rugby and what life has really been like over the past year living  and recovering from a brain injury. This conversation is really open and honest and we also discuss finding your purpose, finding fulfillment and finding ways to look after your mental health. Stevie has his own podcast and business, called Mantality which you can check out. Stevie is a leading figure for advocating mental health and is doing outstanding work by having these open and honest conversations and sharing his own experiences.

Tanya Arnold interviews Stevie Ward and his partner Natalie Alleston about the realities of concussion and having to make the decision to retire at the age of 27 from a sport you love. This interview is a personal look into the difficulties and complex challenges faced by a person suffering from a mild traumatic brain injury and the people closest to them. You will hear about the realities of the symptoms and how they have to be managed and understood if the person wants to carry on living a happy and fulfilled life.  You will discover what went into the decision and how Stevie and his partner will be trying to look forward and find their way in a life without rugby league whilst still recovering from a brain injury.  Although this interview is an in-depth look into Stevie's year with post concussion syndrome it is not a reflection on what happened in a professional setting but more a reflection into the crucial work that has to be done in your personal life when trying to handle the devastating changes that come with brain injury.  A big thank you to Tanya Arnold for taking the reins for this special episode on the Mantality podcast.
