I begin this show with an essay I wrote a while back called How I Learned to Do Too Much … And What I'm Doing About It. In it, I share how my childhood affected my need to overdo and overachieve … and how I've been resolving that for myself. And why so many of us feel ashamed if we don't constantly empty out our endless To Do lists – and how Teal managed life without a To Do list. I spend the rest of the episode sharing some ideas about the real basics we need self-care … especially if we are driven women. I got on the path after my daughter Teal's death, and the collapse of all the structures in my life. Such wonderful things have come out of this, I knew I just had to share these ideas.   I cover the following:   -       How I went from being a workaholic to finding balance in life -       Why self-care is so critical for us -       The gift we are given at birth that is grounded in self-care -       The mindsets that keep us stuck in poor self-care -       One of the most basic self-care actions we forget -       Different reasons we overwork … and what you do about it -       Some great, grounding questions to ask yourself -       How to find more time for self-care Listen … and relax …. And while we're at it, here's some writing you can do.   Questions for Assessing Your Own Self-Care 1.     How would you describe your general state of mind? 2.     How's your energy? 3.     How would you describe your self-care? 4.     When was the last time you took a fun vacation? 5.     Where do you find the fun in life? 6.     Is real fun happening often enough? May you enjoy!   Suzanne       RESOURCES Suzanne's new book Free Spirited; How My Daughter Healed Me from the Afterlife       Suzanne Falter is the author of a memoir about her daughter Teal's death, Free Spirited; How My Daughter Healed Me from the Afterlife. When Suzanne Falter's daughter suffered an unexpected and unexplainable cardiac arrest at the fragile age of twenty-two, she had no idea that her daughter's death would open up a completely different world to her. She never thought that ten years later she would write a book on the many lessons her daughter, Teal, would teach her from the afterlife. At the time of her daughter's passing, Suzanne was in the throes of hustle culture – doing, doing, doing, so much so that she couldn't be bothered to look up from her work to enjoy a sunset.  I wanted to bring Suzanne on the show to talk about the precious experiences she has had communicating with Teal from beyond the grave and how that informs the work she does in the world. In this tender and intimate discussion, I share some of my own experiences of communicating with my father who has passed and how meaning and guidance is often all around us… we only need to get out of our way to see them.  We talk about what it means to truly surrender, what to do if you feel like you suck at meditation, and how to let go of all the stress, overwhelm, and worry that clouds you from operating at high vibration. In Suzanne's memoir, entitled Free Spirited, she writes, “First she would have to die, then I would as well so we'd both be reborn in completely different ways.” If you like the idea of connecting with the afterlife or your spirit guides but have no idea where to start, you won't want to miss this one. This pod explores: The messages Suzanne received from her daughter during the 6 days she was in a coma What it truly means to surrender and why so many of us don't do it How Suzanne has learned to channel and communicate with her daughter and her spirit guides (even though she resisted it for so long) The absolute first place you need to start to cultivate a strong spiritual self and connect with your loved ones who have passed on _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! If you sit a lot to do your job, you could have a unexplained pain that runs from your knees to your shoulders. Suzanne talks to PT Christine Koth about her handy invention, The Hip Hook, and how to release the one muscle that always gets forgotten. I begin this show with a little rhapsody about baking, cooking and nesting as a way to relieve anxiety. For me it's tried and true … and as promised, here is a WONDERFUL recipe that will put you right in the mood. It's for the best chocolate cake on the planet …  And the handwritten frosting recipe was something Teal cooked up, and wrote out here.  (Let me just say, I remember the day all that confectioner's sugar went flying all over the kitchen.) Before her death, she was studying to be a professional cake decorator. Today we're also exploring what it takes to release the tight hips we get from sitting all the time. I had a wonderful interview with Christine Koth, author of Tight Hip, Twisted Core and inventor of the Hip Hook. When I first heard the title of this book, I knew I wanted it immediately … and yes, by gradually releasing that tricky iliacus muscle … I am pain-free today! I learned: Symptoms of a stressed iliacus muscle Problems that cause inflammation and tightness Different ways to release this tightness Why we can't directly release the iliacus muscle The average length of recovery when working with this issue   I highly recommend Christine's work with this. And I really hope you find this show helpful… and may you have healthy hips once more! My best as ever,   Suzanne Falter     RESOURCES   Suzanne's blog A Surprising Way to Heal Your Anxiety   Tight Hip, Twisted Core: The Key to Unresolved Pain   Christine Koth's website The Hip Hook   OUR GUEST Christine Koth, MPT is a licensed Physical Therapist who has specialized in treating the hip area for decades and has been aptly named the "Iliacus Queen." Today's show—my 200th!!—begins with a bit on my story and how it led me on to the path of greater self-care. For we've all been through crises, which in my case turned out to be a marvelous teacher. I also share some thoughts from my wonderful late daughter Teal Barns, who lived with great wisdom and joy and really understood exactly what I needed to learn: how to just ‘be'.       I don't know about you, but I've always been a striver. Ever pushing myself forward to achieve achieve achieve—or at least try to. The problem is that this is the surest path to burnout…and often we trudge there despite the warning flags being waved at us by our bodies.   Perhaps these ideas will help you find a way to slow down a little, tune in and stop making life so very hard. Consider these points, that I discuss in this show.   Are You in Touch with Your Body? Teal's best tips for listening to your body How we were born and what it means for your self-care Why we stop listening to ourselves What is tech apnea What trauma has to do with all of this Is your productivity linked to PTSD? How is your own self-care?   Take a look at the following questions and see if you're called to journal on them…   Suzanne's Key Self-Care Questions   How do you know if you need better self-care? How would you describe your general state of mind right now? Do you feel like you could cry? How's Your Energy? How would you describe your self-care? The last time you took a vacation was….? Where do you find the fun in life? Is it happening often enough?   I truly hope you find peace and peace of mind in this show. Self-care is an inside job. It's about asking for help. It's about knowing you need it. It's about being vulnerable enough with other people to let them in a little, so you aren't doing everything alone. And it is about setting boundaries. In today's episode of the Launch Your Life Podcast, I'm with Suzanne Falter, host of Self-Care for Extremely Busy Women podcast where we talk about grief and loss as an opportunity for growth, reinvention and the five basics of self-care. Self-care is an inside job. It's about asking for help. It's about knowing you need it. It's about being vulnerable enough with other people to let them in a little, so you aren't doing everything alone. And it is about setting boundaries. Have you ever told yourself you can't stop or the world will crumble? Some people believe that. But no one else is going to care for our time the way we do. I'm a true believer in radical responsibility. Our outcomes are based on how we choose to think and how we choose to believe things. Remember, if we're not getting the outcomes that we want, it might be because we are not choosing to look at our habits. Suzanne Falter is spreading the word about self care for extremely busy people. She used to think of self-care as a special treat — something she only bought herself occasionally. And, back then it took the form of a massage or a much anticipated spa day. Also, she always told herself she couldn't afford it. Because, she had children to take care of, mouths to feed and a business to run. Therefore, self-care seemed like a low priority and a big, fat indulgence. Then Suzanne's life fell apart. She lost her business. Her marriage ended, And she moved to the other side of the country. Then, her 22 year old daughter suddenly died. That is when Suzanne discovered that true self-care doesn't require untold sums of money. What it requires is willingness. Furthermore, self care is all about learning to listen deeply and then trusting the answer that comes, no matter what. Now, Suzanne hosts the Self-Care for Extremely Busy Women podcast, and is the author of multiple self-help titles including The Extremely Busy Woman's Guide to Self-Care. Her essays have appeared in SELF, More, Fitness, New Woman, and The New York Times, as well as O. What is being ‘extremely busy' and costing you? How often do you think you're not doing enough, in spite of feeling completely depleted?    If you're always wanting more time for the things that matter to you, then you might have a self-care deficit.     Our tendency to overproduce in an attempt to prove our worthiness is getting us nowhere.   Today, Blake welcomes writer, podcaster, speaker, and self-care expert Suzanne Falter. After the sudden loss of her daughter, she happened upon a blueprint that changed the course of her life. Through the toughest times, she learned the greatest lessons about aligning with our values and the phenomenal healing power of self-care.   You'll hear how Suzanne went from a life of busyness and over-producing to the sudden loss of everything around her, from her vibrant daughter to the roof over her head. She shares the lessons she learned through that profound period of growth and how she's inspiring other women to shift their own perspectives about what's important. Her 5 keys to self-care will help you lead a fuller life that focuses on better alignment so you can prioritize the things that are truly valuable in your life.    When you take the time to understand your specific needs, only then can you honor them and align your way of living with what's uniquely important to you.    What You'll Learn: The loss that launched Suzanne onto a new path of self-care (4:30) How to shift your focus from work to quality of life (9:07) Why alignment is such an important part of self-care (13:17) The 5 basics of self-care (15:00) Why women are conditioned to over-produce (21:15)   Favorite Quotes: You don't have to struggle, you don't have to suffer, you don't have to overwork. There is a great deal of self-care to the idea that we're living our values and we're working in balance. —Suzanne We are born lined up with a set of desires and a set of needs and a set of things in life that just make us smile and feel great. And we forget to honor them, we forget to listen to them... Because we're so busy doing what we think we should do. —Suzanne Overproduction is this idea that you have to keep doing in order to be valid, in order to be adequate, in order to be enough. And we are enough intrinsically as we are, without doing anything. —Suzanne   Grab your free self-care assessment tool: www.suzannefalter.com/yourselfcare   Tune into the Self-Care for Extremely Busy Women podcast: https://suzannefalter.com/xbwpodcast/   Join Suzanne's Facebook group of over 50k women practicing self-care: https://www.facebook.com/groups/selfcareforextremelybusywomen/   ------------- Rather than hoping the grass will be greener, identify what the RIGHT next step is.  We can help you do just that.    Get clarity on where you are on your journey to career fulfillment, where you're headed, optional paths to get there, and the right next step to take.   Start your complimentary, Personalized Career Fulfillment Plan by going to www.thebridgetofulfillment.com/plan Want free resources to set your job search up for success?
