Bill McShane is the lead vocalist and guitarist of Ultimate Fakebook, a power pop trio formed in 1994 in Manhattan, Kansas. Alongside bassist Nick Colby and drummer Eric Melin, McShane helped craft the band's signature blend of catchy hooks and energetic performances. Their 1999 album, This Will Be Laughing Week, garnered critical acclaim. After disbanding in 2003, McShane explored other projects and later reunited with Ultimate Fakebook for new releases like 2020's The Preserving Machine. Practically four years since the last time we chatted (over Zoom in COVID days), ¾ of 8-bit crEEps met me in the parking lot of Cobra Lounge. We talked about the band in advance of their opening slot for Ultimate Fakebook and Hembree at Cobra on Saturday 9/17. While we talked, we also enjoyed delicious macarons from Offbeat Macarons. Band drummer Reasonable Andy provided them, and I think the vanilla is my favorite. If you've yet to hear 8-bit crEEps, I'm a fan and hope you have the chance to dig in to their almost-ten-year's-worth of music online! Transform your living space with cutting-edge home automation. On today's episode, I'm extremely excited to be speaking with Mr. Bill McShane, lead singer of the pop-rock and roll band Ultimate Fakebook. Ultimate Fakebook is from Manhattan Kansas, but I always thought of them as one of my favorite local bands. We talk all about Ultimate Fakebook, we discuss their new album "The Preserving Machine" and the inspiration behind the new record. We talk all about the creative process that led to them releasing a new record after 16 years. They are playing on Friday night at The Record Bar in Kansas City, and MidFest in Manhattan Kansas on Saturday. It's going to be a blast. Bill is also a video editor, a trailer editor more specifically and we talk a little about that as well. This was such a fun conversation. Bill is someone I've wanted to talk to since the inception of this podcast and I want to thank him for taking the time. So, without further ado, please enjoy this multi-faceted conversation with Mr. Bill Mcshane. About Bill McShane: Award winning editor with over 15 years of experience in LA working on theatrical trailers, TV spots, promos, sizzle reels, music videos, home entertainment and behind the scenes material for every major studio, including Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Dreamworks, Sony, Paramount, Universal, Lionsgate, Magnolia Pictures, Cartoon Network, HBO Max, Netflix, FX, AMC and Hulu. Ultimate Fakebook's Bill McShane has been a friend for a long time... so why hasn't he been on Geekscape already to talk about his awesome band? Well, maybe because that band hasn't put out a new album in 16 years! But that all changed last month with the release of Ultimate Fakebook's 'The Preserving Machine'! Bill arrives on the show to talk about the influences that went into the album, how it's the closing of a chapter in the Ultimate Fakebook story and why they would never have turned down shows with The Descendents! Along the way we talk a little emo history, I put my next haircut in the hands of the viewers and discuss how destructive we were as kids! Enjoy! What happens when Star Wars creator/destroyer George Lucas hires X-Men writer Chris Claremont to make a trilogy in the style of Lord of the Rings? An incomprehensible, sodden mess, as it turns out. A gritty reimagineering of slash sequel to a schlocky, shticky, slapsticky non-hit children's movie called Willow, Shadow Moon nearly brings J., Collision, and special guest Tricia Ellis to their knees in this rollicking, pain-filled episode. Grab your favorite Renaissance Faire outfit, crank the ocarina to eleven, and join us, won't you? NOTE: Our guest this week had some unfortunate audio issues with her recording and we had to get a bit creative with editing. Please forgive the occasional crackle and the lack of dramatic reading. This episode features musician and all around super cool dude, Bill McShane! Bill used to sing and play guitar in Ultimate Fakebook. Now he sings and plays guitar in The Pride of Erie PA! He also has a mega-top-secret-awesome-job that we aren't at liberty to discuss (listen to hear him kind of explain it). We talk to Bill about all of these things and more, including his love of horror and science fiction. Good times were had by us, and good times will be had by you. Thanks to McNally Smith College of Music for producing our podcast!
We talk to the current air guitar champion OF THE WORLD, drummer for Ultimate Fakebook and The Dead Girls, and creator of Scene-Stealers, Eric "Mean Melin" Melin! Eric talks all things satire, sci-fi and pulp, specifically James Ellroy, Kurt Vonnegut, and Douglas Adams. Eric has some mean recommendations to give everyone, so get ready. Stick around until the end of the episode to listen to The Dead Girls' song "It's All Happening" featuring our very own, Justin Pierre!
