#53 - Geoffrey Challen: Insubordinate by Design

Geoffrey Challen is a Computer Science Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.With some professors, there's a before and after in your reality as a student—you see things differently. For me, that was Challen's CS 125 (now called CS 124).After I picked up my phone and called the head of physics, he said I couldn't take Physics 211 because my transcript didn't show calculus. Even though I knew it and had taught myself, he didn't let me take it and hung up on me. I found myself with an open spot, and it was this class I'd heard so much about—CS 125 with Geoffrey Challen. I'd heard it was tough, but he was unique and idiosyncratic, and that was interesting, so I took the bait. And it changed me. Not necessarily because of anything I learned, although it helped my understanding of how technology worked, but because of how he saw the world. He spoke openly, questioned norms, and never just went through the motions. Unlike typical professors—front-row nerds and teacher's pets—Challen is a hacker, a rebel. He fell asleep in classes, sat in the back, resisted authority, and now builds his courses around that spirit. His iconic cap reads τέχνῃ—the ancient Greek root of the word technology—which means "the art and skill of making." For Challen, teaching technology isn't just about tools or code; it's about guiding students to become creators. After all, perhaps we shouldn't be called Homo sapiens (the wise ones), but Homo technologicus—those who craft, build, and innovate through τέχνῃ.Challen might not be considered the wisest by some of his colleagues, but the future—reflected in today's students—seems to know better. They don't call him “professor” as much as they call him “dope” or “based.”That's what you get with Challen—not just a professor, but someone who shows you a different way to see the world, to resist conformity, to build things that you want. Someone who proves that being yourself, even when it costs you, is worth it.EPISODE LINKS:Geoffrey Challen's Website: https://www.geoffreychallen.com/Geoffrey Challen's Learn CS Website: https://www.learncs.online/Geoffrey Challen's Society and Technology Class: https://archive.is/SdNAnGeoffrey Challen's Reddit Account: https://www.reddit.com/user/geoffreychallen/comments/?sort=topBooks MentionedWhen Things Go Missing by Kathryn Schulz: https://archive.is/J5ztkLincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders: https://amzn.to/4k0FdbPBeing Wrong by Kathryn Schulz: https://amzn.to/43Umit4Coders by Clive Thompson: https://amzn.to/4jJk1GSThe Overstory by Richard Powers: https://amzn.to/4mUCG5gBewilderment by Richard Powers: https://amzn.to/446zYSSThe Ground Beneath Her Feet by Salman Rushdie: https://amzn.to/45fxEdx

Teaching Classically & Reading Josef Pieper with Dr. Fred Putnam

Classical Education

About the Guest: Dr. Fred PutnamFred Putnam retired after forty years of teaching high school, college, and graduate school; for twelve of those years he was Professor of Bible & Liberal Studies in the Templeton Honors College at Eastern University (2012-2024), where he helped to design, and taught in, the program leading to the MA in Teaching [MAT] in classical education. Beginning as a seminary professor of Biblical Hebrew and Koiné Greek, his teaching expanded to include not only the languages and interpretation of the Bible, but also linguistics, translation theory and practice, English literature, philosophy, etc. During those years of teaching, experiences with students led him from being a fairly conventional teacher (lectures, quizzes, tests, grades, attendance, etc.) to a text- (or subject-) and student-centered pedagogy that others have identified as “classical”. The main thrust of his teaching has always been helping students learn to read-learning to attend to, reflect on, and respond to texts, whatever those texts may be (including poems, novels, Scripture, works of art and music, etc.). In the Templeton Honors College, he led undergrad courses on the Old and New Testaments, Hebrew, Greek, and seminars on Joseph Pieper, The Count of Monte Christo, and philosophy of education, and five masters-level courses in the MAT: "Classical Pedagogy I: The Culture of the Classroom", "Philosophy & History of Education II: The American Public School System", "The Ethos of a School", "Drama in the Classical School (With an Emphasis on Shakespeare)", and "Teaching the Bible as a Classic Text" (online through the Templeton Honors College). While homeschooling their daughters, Fred and his wife met weekly with homeschooled high-schoolers; he taught Shakespeare, poetry, literature, philosophy, Hebrew, and Greek, while his wife tutored individual students in reading and creative writing. Born in New Hampshire, he grew up on farms in northeast Connecticut, emigrated to PA in 1970, and insists that he is a New Englander on "southern assignment". He knows that hills are made of granite, Guernseys give the best milk, and continues to await a real northern-style winter. An ordained minister, he preaches in various churches in southeastern Pennsylvania, where he and his wife live near their daughters and grandchildren, and where he also reads, translates and analyzes the Hebrew and Greek Bible, and putters. Show NotesIn this episode, Adrienne and Dr. Putnam discuss the seminal works of Josef Pieper. They also do a deep dive into what a beautiful way of teaching really looks like. Some highlights include:How Dr. Putnam teaches (What is classical pedagogy?)Teaching & learning are relational activities-- the teacher's view of a student is central to the pedagogyHis course: The Ethos of a School-- how a school can establish and maintain a humane identity even during major changesHow Pieper can help teachers understand virtues and their applications in teachingHow Pieper can help us understand what it really means to learn and how it affects being a teacherUnderstanding the nature of being a person and its implications for teachingResources MentionedAn Anthology by Josef PieperOnly the Lover Sings by Josef PieperLeisure, The Basis of Culture by Josef PieperThe Courage to Teach: The Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life by Parker J. In this episode, I cover the parts of this podcast that absolutely suck and explain why it is important to examine what you suck at. Embrace the suck. I cover the work of James Clear and Ben Franklin. Buy Clear's book Atomic Habits! This is the first episode in a four part series. The next episodes cover (1) Being Wrong, (2) Affirmation and (3) Abortion. The third topic has no connection to the first two, but I feels it is time to cover this important topic. I suppose the biggest connection is that I will discuss where I was wrong on abortion and where I still believe that I am right.

She is also the author of multiple books, including Making Coaching Matter: Leading Continuous Improvement in Schools, with Sarah Woulfin and Kerry Lord (Teachers College Press, 2023).In our conversation we explored a number of questions around continuous school improvement, including:* You promote “intelligent failure” as an organizational disposition, where teachers and leaders are intentionally making mistakes. This feels counter to most school cultures. What conditions need to exist for this to be a reality?* Is a “culture of coaching” the answer to the problem of the status quo? If not, what else?* If you could wave a magic wand and change one thing about schools as they currently are, what would it be?Listeners will walk away with a better appreciation for the complexities of school improvement, along with clear action steps for engaging in this work.Take care,MattWhat we are reading* Isobel listed several favorite professional titles, including The Right Kind of Wrong by Amy Edmondson, Being Wrong by Kathryn Schultz, The Voltage Effect by John List, and Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales.* Debra enjoyed The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. She shared the following quote from this novel: “Fiction is the great lie that tells the truth about how the world lives.”* Matt is planning to start The Reformatory by Tananarive Due soon, a Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Best Horror (2023). * Isobel just posted her December edition of her newsletter, in which she shares more about the instructional design practice of “co-developing recipes—which are NOT the same as checklists or scripts”.* For more information on continuous school improvement, check out my conversation with Isobel's co-author Sarah Woulfin along with Rachael Gabriel. The truth isn't always black and white. Sometimes, it requires more context and background when attributed to different scenarios and situations. The same can be said about your data and whether a “single version of the truth” can be properly applied to multiple use cases for your business. In this episode, Malcolm interviews Jeff Jonas, the Founder, and CEO of Senzing — a software company on the leading edge of developing “entity resolution” solutions — which solve the growing challenge of uniquely identifying people or objects across multiple systems of duplicate, low-quality data. Malcolm and Jeff discuss how advances in technology are fueling more modern forms of entity resolution, where companies are now able to implement more context-centric approaches to complex matching, particularly within their master data management (MDM) programs. As technical as “entity resolution” may sound, the two uncover the global effect this technology has on people each day — including the job of the Chief Data Officer (CDO). Also known as “disambiguation” or “fuzzy matching,” effective entity resolution allows software systems or data stewards to decipher whether records for Richard Smith and Dick Smith may represent the same person, even when it is not overtly suggested by the data.Jeff describes how entity resolution sits as a foundational component of data within MDM, customer relationship management (CRM), know your customer (KYC), supply chain and every other major business process that relies on accurate, trustworthy data. Jeff correctly notes that aside from horrible customer experiences that may arise from a lack of effective entity resolution, “it creates a lot of waste for companies to think you are two or three people instead of one.” Citing a person's example of having their name represented three distinct times in a hotel loyalty club database, he emphasizes the toxicity that comes with a lack of focus on entity resolution for companies who are trying to be both customer and data-centric. While many companies — particularly those already investing in AI/ML — may be attracted to implementing DIY solutions for entity resolution, Jeff notes that it's “super expensive to build”, especially given the complexity and diversity of data, and even language itself. The ability to understand meaning across objects, cultures, languages and even alphabets is at the core of reliable entity resolution and building bespoke solutions for tackling these complex problems — at scale — is beyond the capabilities or budgets of an overwhelming number of companies. When considering a “single version of the truth”, Malcolm unpacks the 30-year history of large, monolithic enterprise resource planning (ERP) suites that created the mindset of master data only living in a singular place within the organization. Thanks to the democratization of IT, the “single version” mindset is shifting both as a practicality and as a business need. Today, master data can be sourced from a single location while supporting multiple versions of truth based on the use case of that data. In talking about the evolution of large-scale entity resolution, its use in MDM to enable multiple versions of the truth and the legacy requirement to have data stewards manually review records, Jeff notes, “There are definitely times…when you want a human to take a look and make an adjudication. But, I will tell you, in large-scale systems, you don't have enough humans.”Rather than adding more people into data stewardship roles to support higher confidence matching, Jeff advocates the approach of widening the pool of data used by entity resolution processes — beyond just name and address — to make match decisions, including the possible use of third-party data sources. The last few minutes of the conversation go deep into AI/ML, and how these new technologies are used to augment human data stewardship processes. Jeff makes a great case to suggest that most stewardship tasks could be mostly automated, but that many companies are unable to duplicate pure human judgment. Throughout the conversation, Jeff and Malcolm take extremely complex technical issues and make them digestible and relatable to CDOs — consistently refocusing on how using entity resolution is critical to establish truth in an organization, especially when using MDM systems to manage said truth. CDOs who want to have more informed conversations with their technical staff about the role of entity resolution going beyond just “fuzzy matching” will find this episode of CDO Matters highly insightful. Key Moments[3:42] Entity Resolution Defined[7:50] The Impact of Poor Data Quality[11:23] The Death of the ‘Single Version of the Truth'[15:45] Entity Resolution Failures[24:03] Understanding Unique Entities[26:13] The Cost of Being Wrong[29:10] Human Intervention vs. Trust in the Algorithm[32:05] Gaining New Insights with MDM[35:09] Valuing Human Judgment [40:03] The Future of Entity Resolution in Digital TransformationKey Takeaways What Is Entity Resolution? (1:58)“Entity resolution is recognizing when two things are the same…it's [also] called ‘fuzzy record matching', ‘link detection', ‘disambiguation', ‘match/merge' and lots of names. It's been congealing into this term ‘entity resolution' and is being more used. And really, the definition that I would have for it is recognizing when two identities are the same despite being described as different.” — Jeff JonasThe Cost and Complexity of Efficient Entity Resolution (5:15)“This problem [with poor entity resolution] is ubiquitous, and it turns out, is super expensive to build. People think you can hire a little team and do some AI/ML and think you are going to match well. And I am telling you, you cannot create something competitive in five years for twenty million.” — Jeff JonasIs the ‘Single Version of the Truth' Dead in 2023? (13:07)“There are still many people saying you need a single version of the truth…At an operational level [within a company], there are multiple versions of the truth. The way a marketer would define a customer is different than the way somebody in finance may define a customer, particularly B2B, where one would be a ‘sell to' and the other is a ‘bill to,' and they are both correct. A lot of people still think that is what MDM is, and it can be that if you want it to be that, but it doesn't have to be.” — Malcolm HawkerWorking with Multiple Versions of the Truth (14:12)“I think the ‘single version of the truth'…those are the dark ages, the dark days. The truth is you really want systems that can present truth to the eye of the beholder. It's about who the recipient is. But there are two forms of truth: One is about separating ‘who is who?' from which attribute is the best attribute…and how many entities does the organization have? Do you really want marketing to have a different [data] account than finance?” — Jeff JonasHuman vs. Software: The Role of Human Judgment (29:38)“There are definitely times/cases in data when you want a human to take a look and make an adjudication. But I will tell you, in large-scale systems, you don't have enough humans. Second, I will tell you, ‘How does the human do it?' The human is using additional data. It's either data stuck in their head or they're searching it up somewhere…but a lot of times, you have to actually do research…so making these decisions on records with some human intervention is about adding data. And one of the things that we propose is that there are kinds of data that is the initial data needed.” — Jeff JonasAbout Jeff JonasJeff Jonas is not only the CEO and Founder of Senzing but also the Chief Scientist. Since 2016, the organization has provided fast and easy API for accurate data matching. For more than 30 years in the field, he has been at the forefront of solving big data problems for both companies and governments. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 308: Time to Rest and Refuel with Shannon Crow   Description: As yoga teachers, we all know that we cannot pour from an empty cup. We cannot give to others or connect with others, nor do our most creative and meaningful work when we're feeling exhausted, drained, and depleted. That's why it's important to take time to rest and refuel when things feel tough and overwhelming.   In this episode, Shannon Crow shares some of her strategies for finding time to rest and recharge every day and why rest is so important for us. However, rest isn't just about sleeping and there are different kinds of rest we need. Shannon invites you to consider: What would it look like for you today if rest and refuel time was your top priority?   Key Takeaways: [1:16] Shannon introduces the topic for this episode - taking time to rest and refuel. [1:41] Shannon shares an update from sponsor, OfferingTree. [4:32] What can you do in this moment that would bring you ease and comfort as you listen? [15:23] Yoga teachers and entrepreneurs often ask Shannon how she's gotten to a place where she's been podcasting for almost 6 years and working for herself for 18 years. [15:23] We can often have our inner critic kick in. It is important to notice when this happens. [16:30] When she's going through a tough time, Shannon asks herself two questions. 1) How am I feeling?, 2) What baby steps can I take to bring more ease and comfort in this tough moment? [18:56] We can find ways to fit rest and restoration into our daily lives. [21:29] What would that look like for you today if rest and refuel time was your top priority? The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 293: Eating Disorder Recovery & Yoga with Vivian Selles   Description: Eating disorders are a serious condition that can even be life threatening or fatal in some cases yet we may not always recognize that someone is experiencing an eating disorder. Globally, 9% of the world population are affected by eating disorders and this number is increasing each year. How can yoga teachers support people with eating disorders? Vivian Selles has some insights.   Vivian is an experienced registered yoga teacher and Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (ERYT-200/YACEP). She teaches full-time in eating disorder recovery centers in Charlotte, NC, and uses her practice and teachings to cultivate positive change in the yoga community. As a yoga teacher, her intention is to create and hold safer, accessible spaces for people to connect to the practice and show up as they are. Vivian has also co-founded a local yoga coalition for equality.    Vivian explains why yoga teachers should avoid talking about how much or what to eat, and how this can feed into harmful diet culture. Vivian also shares many useful and practical tips around the language we use in our yoga classes, including how to avoid cues that may demonize certain body parts, excluding competitive and comparison language, as well as how we can make our language and cues more invitational and open-ended for students. Vivian highlights our scope of practice as yoga teachers in supporting people in eating disorder recovery and how having a referral team can help too.   Key Takeaways: [4:38]  Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Vivian Selles. [8:10] What does Vivian do and who does she do it for? [10:39] What is diet culture? [11:16] Dominant culture equates thinness with being healthy. How does this show up in yoga classes? [13:20] Shannon and Vivian discuss cues and language that we use in yoga spaces that could demonize certain body parts. [15:12] What does Vivian wish all yoga teachers knew going into a yoga class? [17:46] Vivian highlights some specific language she avoids and some of her preferred cueing options. [21:52] A lot of this starts with us doing our own internal work. [31:04] Messages you might get in the yoga world around what you should eat, how you should move, what you should look like, etc do not align with yoga philosophy. [34:19] Shannon pops in with a question from a member of the Connected Yoga Teacher Facebook group about OfferingTree. [37:24] How does Vivian focus on yoga philosophy when teaching yoga? [44:07] If you are interested in learning more, Vivian has some resources to recommend. [48:52] Who are some other people who can offer support and are crucial for people in recovery? [53:09] Our students can also become our teachers. [58:11] Learn more about Vivian and connect with her via her website and social media. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 284: Beyond Pronouns and Pride Month with Shannon Crow   Description: How can we make our yoga classes more inclusive and accessible? The truth is, sometimes we can mess up and make mistakes even when we try to create safer spaces in our yoga classes. We may cause harm without realizing it - that's why it is a huge gift when someone points out how we are causing harm.   The work of continuous learning goes beyond simply using the right pronouns and extends far beyond Pride month. These are complex and nuanced issues - we have to strive to continuously educate ourselves. In this episode, Shannon Crow shares the email from a listener that inspired this conversation as well as resources for you if you are keen to continue learning how to create safer, more accessible yoga spaces for people in the LGBTQIA+ community.   Key Takeaways: [3:24] Shannon shares a book she has been enjoying and learning from recently. [6:56] This episode was inspired by a brave email sent by a podcast listener in response to Episode 275 about being kicked out of yoga class. [9:00] Shannon shares the email from the listener. [10:44] Even when we want to create safe spaces, we may not succeed. We may also cause harm to others and it is a huge gift when they communicate that with us. [11:58] Our continuous learning journey goes beyond Pride month. [13:03] We can spread our learning and collaboration requests out to span the entire year, instead of just in Pride month. [14:12 Shannon has some resources for you if you want to create an inclusive yoga space in all months of the year, not just in June. [20:54 - 20:59] Shannon shares what OfferingTree is putting together for yoga studios. [22:43] Shannon highlights some of the podcast episodes listeners can learn from as well as trainings available. For the longest time, I've wanted to do book reports. Share some of the books that had the most impact in my life. But, it turns out “report” isn't quite right and what I really care to do is discuss how and why they've impacted me. Kathryn Schulz's “Being Wrong” is the first and possibly most important of those selections, as it opened the door for objective and defense-free self exploration, a critical component of living an examined life along my personal Path of Wellness.

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 267: Thoughts on Belly Breathing with Shannon Crow   Description: As human beings, we are always learning new information. Sometimes, this new information conflicts with our current beliefs or knowledge, so we need to be willing to dig in and explore this - and if we are wrong, to admit it and change our beliefs. This happened to Shannon Crow (she/her) with belly breathing.   You may have learned about the benefits of belly breathing in yoga class or yoga teacher training or even taught it to your students. However, it may not be the best practice for everyone. In this episode, Shannon reflects on how she came to change her views on belly breathing and how she now teaches breath to her students instead. She shares her own experiences as a yoga teacher and a yoga practitioner from what she has learned and then unlearned. If you have ever taught breathing in a yoga class, this episode is for you.    Key Takeaways: [3:14] Shannon introduces her topic for this episode and why she was inspired to share about it. [4:58] Shannon shares a little about an upcoming online workshop she is hosting with OfferingTree. [6:39] Shannon learned about belly breathing in yoga classes and in yoga teacher training. Eventually, she realized that what she knew or believed about belly breathing may not be correct. [8:54] The more research Shannon did into belly breathing, the worse she felt for teaching it the way she was. She reflects on how she felt at that time. [10:04] What happens when we take a breath? Where does the breath begin? [13:24] What do we really mean when we say belly breathing? [15:38] Some things associated with belly breathing can put additional pressure on the pelvic floor, and this may not be desirable for some people. [20:46] We are always going to be learning new information, and as yoga teachers, we need to explore how we can move with grace to explain to our students why we have shifted certain things we teach. [23:28] What are your thoughts on belly breathing? Share them with Shannon!   Chart that shows what happens when we breathe:     Links: The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast Episode 247: Being Wrong is Part of Learning with Shannon Crow New Thoughts on Belly Breathing, by Shannon Crow (Article) OfferingTree Webinar: Clarify Your Offering with Shannon Crow What's Up ‘Down There'? by Shannon Crow for Health Journal Trista Zinn The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast Episode 069: Yoga with Pelvic Organ Prolapse with Dr. Sarah Duvall Yoga Teacher Conf Yoga Teacher Conf Live Stream (Code: SHANNONCROW) Scattered to Clarity Workshop Native Land Digital Shannon Crow on Instagram The Connected Yoga Teacher Facebook Group   Gratitude to our Sponsor, OfferingTree and Pelvic Health Professionals.   Quotes from this episode: "The more research I did into this, the worst I felt for teaching the way I was teaching belly breathing."   "Something that we all need to embrace as yoga teachers is that we are responsible for how we're guiding our students."   "As long as I continue to listen and learn and grow as a human, I'm on the right track."

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 265: Teach LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Yoga with Gabi Parkham    Description: We all want our yoga classes to be welcoming places for everybody, but sometimes, we unintentionally make some people feel excluded or unwelcome. One of those groups of people is the LGBTQIA+ community. Gabi Parkham shares how we can teach LGBTQIA+ inclusive yoga and create safer yoga spaces.   Gabi was born in Brighton (UK) and started practicing yoga during early childhood. She is passionate about finding equity and justice through yoga, consent in all aspects, and sharing yoga free from assumptions. Alongside teaching yoga, Gabi is an LGBTQIA+ equity educator and consultant helping yoga teachers and studios to make their classes more welcoming for the LGBTQIA+ community. Gabi runs regular online workshops about LGBTQIA+ "inclusion" and a 6 month online course for LGBTQIA+ yoga teachers to come together in community, learn from one another, and support each other. Gabi also co-founded Laviot, a social and supportive community LGBT+ Jewish non-binary people and women.   In this interview, Gabi explains what LGBTQIA+ means, the importance of sharing pronouns, and why creating spaces for this community is important. Gabi shares more about why it's so important to get educated, then teach like there is a trans or non-binary person in your class all the time, and how to include that in marketing your classes. This is all part of a lifelong learning journey, and the work is always ongoing. Learn more about how to start creating safer, braver, and more inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ folks in your yoga class in this episode.   Key Takeaways: [3:15] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Gabi Parkham. [25:02] What does LGBTQIA+ stand for? [27:07] Gabi isn't too keen on this wording. She explains why. [28:29] How can we center the voices and experiences of people who have historically been marginalized? [30:35] Shannon and Gabi explore what the world could be like if cisgender and/or heterosexual people took the time to explore their own gender and sexual identity and expression. [33:40] What are Gabi's thoughts on pronouns? [38:23] How can yoga teachers make it evident that they've been doing the work to learn about creating safer spaces for people in the LGBTQIA+ community? To be happy though, requires humility and self reflection. Because like it or not, we are always wrong in life as Kathryn Schulz writes in her book, Being Wrong; Adventures in the Margin of Error. In this rerun of Episode 32, we touch on the question of what is more important: being right or happy in a relationship?
