America's drinking water infrastructure depends on more than 2 million miles of pipe buried beneath streets and communities across the country. In this episode of How Water Works, Jeff Mason leads a tour inside the U.S. Pipe foundry in Alabama to show how ductile iron pipe is manufactured — from recycled scrap metal to critical underground infrastructure. The episode follows the intense process of melting old cars, appliances, and industrial metal into pipe engineered to last for generations and withstand earthquakes, floods, and decades of pressure underground. It also explores overlooked sustainability stories inside heavy industry, including industrial water reuse systems, emissions reductions through electric induction furnaces, and how more than 90% recycled material becomes essential infrastructure. Along the way, Mason explains the chemistry, testing, coatings, and cement linings that help ensure drinking water remains safe and reliable as it moves through these systems. From molten iron hotter than lava to finished pipe headed everywhere from Manhattan to small-town America, the story pulls back the curtain on one of the most important — and invisible — parts of how water works. waterloop is a nonprofit news outlet exploring solutions.

Nanobubbles—microscopic pockets of gas invisible to the human eye—are emerging as a powerful tool to improve water treatment and management. In this episode of How Water Works, Travis Loop visits Moleaer Inc. in Los Angeles to break down how nanobubbles work and why they're gaining traction across industries.Thousands of times smaller than a grain of salt, nanobubbles don't rise and burst like ordinary bubbles—they remain suspended for months, increasing dissolved oxygen and enhancing biological activity in water.Inside the lab, experiments show how these charged particles scatter light, stabilize gases, and attract contaminants—helping water become clearer and cleaner. The impact is already showing up in the field. ➡️ Through collaborations with Xylem, U.S. wastewater utilities are reducing ammonia and cutting aeration energy. ➡️ In South America, greenhouses are lowering chemical use while increasing yields. ➡️ Nordic aquaculture operations are improving fish survival. ➡️ In California's Lake Elsinore, the technology has helped control harmful algal blooms, reopening the lake for recreation and driving renewed economic activity.Still early in its adoption, nanobubble technology is moving quickly from experimentation to real-world deployment—offering a lower-energy, lower-chemical approach to treating and managing water. This episode features a conversation with Arjan Rietveld, a writer and curator in the world of electronic music. Arjan is the founder of Field Records, which has released a string of experimental and artistically driven albums since the label was launched in 2008. In this discussion, Arjan introduces Waterworks, a multimedia project he spearheaded which catalogues the centuries-long history of Dutch hydraulic engineers working on water management in Japan. That catalogue primarily takes the form of an interactive map detailing over 50 projects across Japan during the Meiji Era. In addition to the map, the Waterworks project yielded a trilogy of albums exploring this history through a mixture of ambient music, environmental recordings, and experimental audio production. Listeners will hear selected excerpts in this episode, but all of the recordings, the interactive map, and more historical details are available on the project website: https://waterworksproject.nl/en. This week I step inside Waterworks Visual Arts Center in Salisbury, NC to experience Heidi Mraz's immersive automotive art exhibit. Heidi transforms fragments—vintage brochures, race maps, workshop notes, paint chips—into large-scale portraits that feel alive with motion and memory. We talk process (from research to layering and collage), the stories hidden in each build sheet and body panel, and why car culture belongs on museum walls as much as it does on concours lawns. Sustainability Now - exploring technologies and paradigms to shape a world that works
A Sustainability Now Interview with Water Stories Founder, Zach Weiss What if the key to impacting climate change isn't as much about carbon as it is about water? In this episode, we are delighted to welcome back Zach Weiss, visionary water restoration expert and founder of Water Stories, for an exploration of how and why healing the water cycle can regenerate the planet. From extreme weather events—droughts and wildfires to catastrophic mudslides and floods—our planet's most pressing climate crises are symptoms of a broken water cycle—a situation that we have the ability to heal. Zach shares why water cycle restoration is the most effective, immediate, and scalable solution to stabilizing our climate, cooling landscapes, reversing desertification, and restoring thriving ecosystems. Drawing from real-world success stories, Zach shares how farms, cities, and even entire river systems are being revived through simple, nature-based interventions. In Montana, a parking lot became a thriving wetland in just two years, providing habitat for a rare and endangered salamander species. In India, through the work of Rajendra Singh, communities restored 13 rivers that had been dry for decades. These projects aren't just theoretical—they're proof that by working with nature, rather than against it, we can restore balance to the planet. With a community of 6000 and growing, Water Stories is spreading the word through education and action, providing extensive resources for individuals, professionals, and policymakers alike. They also offer a once-a-year six-month training that equips participants with the knowledge and skills to get involved in this regenerative work—work that has been successfully implemented by everyone from individual land stewards to government agencies.
The St. Francis Dam, or the San Francisquito Dam, was a concrete gravity dam located in San Francisquito Canyon in northern Los Angeles County, California, United States, that was built between 1924 and 1926. The dam failed catastrophically in 1928, killing at least 431 people in the subsequent flood, in what is considered to have been one of the worst American civil engineering disasters of the 20th century and the third-greatest loss of life in California history. The dam was built to serve the growing water needs of the city of Los Angeles, creating a large regulating and storage reservoir that was an integral part of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. It was located in San Francisquito Canyon, about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. However, a defective soil foundation and design flaws led to the dam's collapse just two years after its completion. Its failure ended the career of William Mulholland, the general manager and chief engineer of the Bureau of Water Works and Supply (now the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) You will find the full transcript behind the show notes: https://interspanish.buzzsprout.comIf you have a story or topic you would like me to cover, please send your suggestions to: InterSpanishPodcast@gmail.com Please visit my socials: Website: https://interspanish.buzzsprout.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuy74tWny908FqEX3VSixHXGbCu1IL3Zq Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/319567492909061 Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Intermediate_Spanish/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/interspanish/

Started as a shop for bathroom hardware in the 1970s, Waterworks has grown over the decades into a $200 million kitchen and bath company with national scale. Eight years after being acquired by RH, more growth is on the horizon: RH CEO Gary Friedman has said Waterworks could one day be a billion-dollar brand. On this episode of the podcast, CEO Peter Sallick talks with host Dennis Scully about what he's learned from Friedman, finding the balance between art and engineering, and why the biggest challenge trade brands face is simply letting consumers know they exist. This episode is sponsored by Loloi, Crypton and RoweLINKSWaterworksDennis ScullyBusiness of Home
