I'll Explain Later: a Doctor Who podcast

For the final instalment of our missing-presumed-wiped 2019 recording, we look at Hartnell-era SFX spectacle The Web Planet. Along the way, we consider how autobiographical this story might have been for Bill Strutton, whether or not its reputation is deserved, and - of course - insect movement.Watch this episode on YoutubeEmail usFind us on Bluesky & Instagram Hosted on Acast. Welcome back to the Doctor Who Literature podcast. This week, I'm discussing the second published Doctor Who novelization, adapting the notorious (and very highly-rated) 1965 serial, "The Web Planet". Bill Strutton's only contribution to the books line. Strutton, who had a prolific career and a fascinating biography, came to the books very early on, and some of his assumptions about the TARDIS and the Doctor's female companions look downright odd to us today in 2021. How does the book hold up, 56 years after its release? What positive messages can we take away from it today?

And is 'The Web Planet' actually just Doctor Who at it's most cynical?Under discussion: 'The Green Death' for the Trump administration, the environmental impact of luxury golf courses, wobbly morals, insect movement by Roselyn De Winter, how Peter Capaldi's talking a lot of shite and Viva Las Vortis! *Apologies for the tinniness of Mark's audio, there was a microphone issue. We started off the podcast with Doctor Who and Big Finish news, thanks to www.doctorwhonews.net for the up to date DW news! We discuss the news of Big Finish releasing the first full cast audio for Torchwood.  Briefly discuss of the Dark Shadow's 50th Anniversary release. Then we discuss the work of Fantom Films work with previous audio commentaries, The Web of Fear and Enemy of the World, and what they have in store for Doctor Who commentaries on some orphaned episodes.  From one Romana story to another, we discuss Gallifrey: Enemy Lines - Series 8, written by David Llewellyn, and how this one story possibly undoes Intervention Earth from series 7.  Going from one Doctor Who spin-off to another, we look at episode #2.3, Torchwood: Ghost Mission, written by James Goss, featuring Tom Prince as Sergeant Andy Davidson.  Form current releases, we look back at the Cyberman series 1 and 2, as Big Finish has released them in one big box set.  As great as a series as Cyberman is, Liam and Brett do discuss a downer regarding this re-released boxed set.   A BIG thanks to Big Finish for the updated Big Finish app!  It is user friendly, and just amazing!  Between that and Brett finding the Fantom Film audio commentaries for Web of Fear and Enemy of the World, Brett needed some time alone. :)   We change our minds for the audio only release for the month of June, from The Daemons (3rd Doctor Classic Series) to fit in with the Fourth Doctor Adventure release for the month of June, The Trouble with Drax, to the last story in The Key to Time series, The Armageddon Factor (4th Doctor Classic Series).   Audio Only Review list - Spearhead from Space (recorded, post-production needed); The Web Planet (recorded in the month of June); The Armageddon Factor (recorded for June, sometime in June or July); Dragonfire (to be recorded in July); The Power of Kroll (to be recorded in August); finally The Daemons (to be recorded in September).  Please stay tuned for those releases, and further releases when we focus merely on the strength of the story and storytelling, and ignore the visuals.   Please email the show at: alhambraaudio@gmail.com Tweet the show: @AlhambraPodcast or @djNezumi or @Mavic_Chen Visit our website: AlhambraPodcast.weebly.com

In episode 32, we begin with Doctor Who News, discussing the news that was revealed at Big Finish Day 8 with more Blake's 7, War Doctor Box set 4 with Leela. Starting with the month of January, we have some clips from Main Range 195 Mistfall, by Andrew Smith (writer of the classic story Full Circle). We gave some thoughts about the 4th Doctor getting an new companion that was not on the classic series (like the 6th Doctor).  We speculate on the Big Finish Novel Adaptation #11 being Lungbarrow as we review The Romance of Crime and The English Way of Death. I talk about my love of Film Noir detective radio shows, and why I appreciate The Avengers.  Liam explains to me the how Dark Shadows: Bloodlust works and thoughts on that range. Liam also continues to work on me to give Rise of the Runelords a listen, explaining and educating me on legends and D&D mythology. We continue on with the year's review looking at Main Range 196 release, Equilibrium, by Matt Litton. Liam gets after me (rightly so too), because I have not watched/listened to Blake's 7, Pathfinders, and then Gallifrey series, because my jumping on point was Gallifrey 7: Intervention Earth, due to reviews that I read told me it's a good jumping on point. We then look at the final episode of the 5th Doctor E-Space Trilogy, The Entropy Plague, by Jonathan Morris.  I go on about how great Requiem for the Rocket Men, by John Dorney, and the greatness of the Rocket Men trilogy using clips to try to prove my point.  Discuss Dark Eyes series 4 and the downfalls of this range compared to the greatness of Doom Coalition range.  I share a few clips and share my love for the Novel Adaptation The Well-Mannered War by Gareth Roberts. We also discuss the possibilities of if the unresolved ending to the Well-Mannered War will get resolved in Series 5 of The 4th Doctor Adventures. Bleep. bleepbleepblooooop. BlooopbloopblopblooptriiiiiillllwarblewarbleBLEEP. Scuttleflappityflapflap…..HOP. Pluarrrghhkkhhh Wuarrrgggghhhhkkk. (Translation) When the Tardis is forced to land on a planet, the crew discover that a giant, telepathic jellyfish with a gold fetish and the voice of a pervert has taken over, enslaved all the ants, evicted the butterflies and started to collect moons. o….kaaaaaaaayyyy. The butterflies want the planet back and get the Tardis crew to help them deflate the jellyfish. They don't do this straight away of course, oh no. First Vicki practices tightrope walking in the TARDIS, then Ian loses his pen, destroys his school tie and threatens to drop his trousers. Ignoring him, Barbara wanders around doing a half-Karloff while the Doctor stares into the jaws of danger and asks it for a haircut.

Oh boy, this sure wasn't a good idea. This month, in an effort to deal with the issue of one-off writers, Erik and Kyle ventured into four regularly-derided stories from the Hartnell era: "The Sensorites" by Peter R. Newman, "The Web Planet" by Bill Strutton, "Galaxy 4" by William Emms, and "The Ark" by Paul Erickson (and Lesley Scott, although she did nothing). Umm, that happened. Are they as bad as people say? Not necessarily.  But hey, next month it's Don Houghton so that's a step in the right direction, right?

Kurz und knapp: Wir besprechen "The Web Planet".
