When ISIS was at its height, its ranks included several hundred Americans. They were often young men radicalized online by savvy marketing that promised free housing and the chance to meet a wife. When the Islamic State collapsed, some of them ended up in huge detention camps in Syria, and the U.S. has been trying to bring them home. NPR's Sacha Pfeiffer reports on one American family coping with the aftermath of the child they lost, and the children they found. What happened to the families of the Americans who joined ISIS? Not just the families they left behind in the U.S., but the ones they formed overseas?  Audio recordingSermon manuscript:Our Gospel reading today is Jesus's prophecy about the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple. Jesus said these things about 40 years before it actually took place. This prophecy is also, at the same time, about the end times and the last day. At the end of our reading Jesus says that he will come with great power and glory. What I would like to focus on today, then, is how we should prepare for the end times according to what Jesus says in our reading. However, before we speak more positively about how we should be, it is helpful, I think, to point out two very common false beliefs about the end times. First of all, there are many Christians who do not believe that there will be any end times at all, or at least they never wish to talk about them. We confess in our creeds that Jesus sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. You heard Jesus say that there will be signs and wonders in the sky and tribulations on earth. Peter says in his second epistle that the elements will melt as they burn. For many people these kinds of things are just too unusual. We want life to go on as it always has. It is unsettling to think that the existence of the universe could be so devastatingly altered. Plus, probably in the back of our mind, we think it is just mythical make-believe anyway. You know those ancient people. They weren't too smart. If they knew what we know they wouldn't have made such wild and impossible prophecies. This false belief is common among us Lutherans. We are pretty staid and steady people. We don't like to get too worked up about anything, and, in general, that's a positive thing. The teaching in the Bible is clear. If it's alright to disbelieve in the wrath of God at the end of days, why should we believe anything that we don't like? The other false belief seems like it is almost the opposite. Instead of despising the end times, never talking of them, there is an obsession with end times things. This is understandable. The signs and wonders are stupendous if you are willing to take them seriously. It can be thrilling to know things that others don't know. I remember as a kid sometimes seeing on TV a man named Jack Van Impe and his wife, Rexella. They would have a stack of newspapers on their set and they'd go from one to the next, citing bible passage after bible passage: “This news story fulfills this passage, and this news story fulfills that passage.” The take-away was always the same: “The end is near. There is going to be widespread collapse.” And there was always a kind of glee in the prospect of the widespread collapse. The TV prophet was quite happy to tell you about it. You can be happy too if you believe him, because you can prepare accordingly. Make sure you've got food and water in the basement. Maybe these days you need to make sure that you've got some crypto-currency. Be one of the smart ones so that you can ride out the end of days in style. You can be comfortably sitting in your bunker, armed to the teeth. Although these folks seem to be highly believing because they only want to talk about these conspiracies and prophecies, they, too, are unbelieving and unprepared. How may anyone escape the wrath that is about to be revealed? The true and infallible preparations are being baptized, feeding one's faith with the Word of God, receiving the Lord's Supper, praying, praising, and giving thanks. Repentant faith in Jesus, who has turned away God's wrath, is the only way to make it through any terrors or difficulties. As for what we should eat and drink, or what we should wear, Jesus tells us that we should not worry about these things. Your heavenly Father knows that you have need of them. These two false beliefs look like they are practically opposites. Some Christians never think or speak of the end times. Other Christians never stop thinking or speaking of the end times. Neither approach avails anything. Baptism is our spiritual ark. Faith in Christ is the only preparation. Flesh and blood cannot see the kingdom of God, but only a new creation. We must be born again by the water and the Spirit. As we now turn to Jesus's words in our Gospel reading, I would argue that this is Jesus's concern as well. He wants us to guard our faith. He forthrightly says that terrors and convulsions are coming. How we are to be prepared, however, has to do with our faith and the confession of our faith. So that is what we will turn to now. Jesus's talk is begun by the disciples commenting on the massive and impressive temple. The temple truly was a sight to behold. If anything seemed permanent, it was this temple, but Jesus said one stone would not be allowed to remain sitting upon another. Then the disciples asked Jesus to tell them more about that. I'd like to you pay attention to how Jesus does not tell them to form militias or shadow governments. He doesn't tell them to make any kind of physical preparations. The wrath of God is coming and there isn't anything anybody can do to stop that. Instead Jesus wants to guard their faith. Jesus said, “Watch out so that you are not deceived! For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,' and ‘The time is near.' Do not follow them. Whenever you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be terrified, for these things must happen first, but the end will not be right then.”  As you know there are many people who rise up all the time, saying that they have their finger on what is going on. They know the secrets. They know what is going to happen. Follow them because the end is near. Their exciting messages of doom and deliverance through prudent preparations stir up those who believe in them so that they gain their cliques and cadres of people in the know. Jesus says to beware people like that. Why? Because they are worthless. You already have all that you need in the true Jesus. If you have Jesus you don't need some guru to read the tea leaves or the newspapers. Gurus might tell you all kinds of secret and exciting things, but their wisdom is nothing compared to the wisdom even of our humble little Catechism. If you want to know what you are to do, turn to the Ten Commandments—and you won't find anything about crypto-currency or bunkers in there. If you want to know what you are to believe, consult the Creed. These truly make you wise for salvation. Let us turn again to Jesus's words, and he goes on for some time: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines, and diseases in various places. There will be horrifying sights and great signs from heaven. But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, handing you over to synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name's sake. It will turn out to be your opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand how to defend yourselves, for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all people for my name's sake. But not a hair of your head will perish. By patient endurance you will gain your lives.” Jesus lays out frightening things: wars, earthquakes, famines, and diseases. Perhaps the most frightening things, though, are the personal betrayals and tests of one's confession of faith. It's like it was with Peter on the night when Jesus was betrayed: “Are you one of them? Are you one of Jesus's disciples? Are you an enemy of enlightened progress or an enemy of the state?” But, again, notice where Jesus directs us—not to swords or guns. We are to maintain our faith in him. If we have faith in him, then we can even rest assured that we will say what he would have us say before those who persecute us. The one thing that Jesus tells us we should make our mind up about beforehand is that we are not going to defend ourselves. The kingdom of God is not the product of human cunning, logic, or political manipulations. The kingdom of God is the testimony of Jesus, the one who has overcome this world. And if you have him, then not even a hair of your head will perish. Even if you are put to death for our faith, not one hair of your head will perish. By patient endurance in your faith you will be saved. One outward action that Jesus does recommend is the fleeing from Jerusalem. He told his disciples that when they see the armies coming upon Jerusalem that they should get out. Forty years later it appears that the Christians remembered Jesus's prophecy. They fled before Jerusalem was surrounded and hemmed in on every side. So also we Christians may flee from danger. You see this in the book of Acts. When Jerusalem was thrown into an uproar with the stoning of St. Stephen the Christians fled to other lands and cities. This was, in fact, how the Gospel came to the Gentiles. The Christians who fled Jerusalem preached the Gospel to their Gentile neighbors and by the power of the Holy Spirit they were converted to faith in Christ. You also see in Acts that St. Paul did not purposely hand himself over to those who were wanting to put him to death. Once he escaped under cover of night, being lowered down from the city wall in a basket. When he was arraigned in Jerusalem he appealed to Caesar, which was his right as a Roman citizen. So we do not need to go looking for trouble and martyrdom. However, if we are called upon to make the good confession, then we must do so regardless of the consequences. I can give you a contemporary example. Years ago a militant Islamic group called ISIS rose to power in the Middle East. They conquered some territory in Syria and Iraq. There are some towns in that area that have Christians in them. When ISIS would come to a town they would round up the people and ask them if they were Christians. If they said they were, their heads would be chopped off. They would do this even with Christian children. If you were one of those Christians, you would need to continue to confess Christ, come what may. If you confessed Christ and your head was chopped off, ultimately not even a hair of your head would be harmed, for you will live again. It is not optional for us to confess Christ. If we deny him we would be like faithless Simon Peter. As the Scriptures say, “If we deny him, he will deny us.” However, on the other hand, if you know that ISIS is heading towards your village, you do not need to stay there. You do not need to hand your children over to be slaughtered. You should try to go where you will be safe. However, if you end up before the executioner for your Christian faith, or if you should be fired from your job for your Christian faith, or some other persecution comes upon you, then you should know that this is God's will. He will keep you safe even if your head gets chopped off. It is your opportunity to testify of this hope that is within you. So, to sum up: The only true way to be prepared for the end times is always internal. Being prepared for the end times is a matter of repentance and faith. If we fear God's wrath for our sins and believe in Jesus Christ who has saved us from our sins, then we are in good stead. With such a faith we are in good stead even if the earth gives way and the mountains go crashing into the sea. Jesus has reconciled you to God. All things, then, must turn out for the best for those who trust in him. So when you see Jesus coming on the clouds with power and great glory, do not curl up into a ball or put your tail between your legs. Straighten up and lift up your heads, for your redemption draws near.

(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Justice Samuel Alito condemned religious persecution Speaking at the Religious Liberty Summit in Rome, Italy on July 21st, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito  cautioned that religious liberty is now threatened worldwide.  ALITO: “Religious liberty is under attack in many places because it is dangerous to those who want to hold complete power. “When ISIS occupied Northern Iraq, thousands of Yazidi men and boys were slaughtered, and thousands of women and girls were raped and forced into marriage with ISIS fighters. “In Nigeria, Christians have been under constant attack. “In Egypt, numerous Coptic churches have been attacked, and many worshippers have been killed. “In India, Hindu and Muslim groups have brutally assaulted each other since independence. “And, in China, of course, there is the unspeakable treatment of the Uyghurs.” Snapshot of global persecution hot spots Most recently, Muslim radicals are putting pressure on Christian churches in Burkino Faso, Africa. In Myanmar, the Burmese military's (Tatmadaw) Major General Zaw Min Tu took to a news conference last week, announcing that any criticism of Buddhism in the country would be punished. And, as The Worldview reported on Monday, Hmong Christians in the Nghe An province of Northern Vietnam are under persecution from gangs. In some cases, they are exiled from their homes by their animist relatives. 83 Christian groups urge Senate to reject “gay” marriage bill Quite a bit is at stake as the U.S. Senate considers the “[Dis] respect for Marriage Act.  Alliance Defending Freedom President Michael Farris  told radio talk show host Todd Starnes last week that this bill could lead to polygamy and plural marriages. Listen. FARRIS: “The plain truth is this Act goes well beyond codifying [the] Obergefell [Supreme Court case]. It allows for any state definition of marriage to be federally enforced. So, if the state decides, ‘We're going go polygamy or plural marriages or all kinds of things that are out there in the Left's lexicon these days,' that could be a problem." Plus, Farris said that this [Dis]respect for Marriage bill will result in churches and 501(c)3 groups losing their tax-exempt status with the IRS, if they were to oppose the state on faux homosexual marriage. FARRIS: “The IRS can be sent against nonprofit organizations, denying them their tax-exempt status if they fail to adhere to this definition of marriage.” To their credit, ADF has sponsored a letter to U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell and the Republicans in the Senate, encouraging a “no” vote on the bill.  Among the 83 signatories are Al Mohler, Franklin Graham, Tony Perkins, Jim Daly, and Kelly Shackelford. If you have not yet taken the time to call your two U.S. Senators, please do so today! Ask them to vote against the so-called “respect for Marriage Act. Call 202-224-3121. That's 202-224-3121. 173 God-hating businesses advocate for “gay” faux marriage bill Meanwhile, corporate America has come together to advocate for the bill's passage. Spearheaded by the homosexual group, Human Rights Campaign, 173 businesses endorsed the sexually perverted agenda in a July 28th letter to the U.S. Senate. Psalm 2:3 reminds us that these businesses set themselves against the Lord, and against His anointed, saying, “Let us break their bands asunder.” America killed Al Qaeda's #2 leader The U.S. military has taken out another terrorist leader, reports Politico.com. Al Qaeda's number two guy, after Osama Ben Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was killed in a U.S. drone strike on Saturday at 9:48 pm in Kabul, Afghanistan as he stood on the balcony of his home. “Evangelical” socialist author Ron Sider died The Christian “Evangelical” socialist, Ron Sider, died over the weekend at 82 years of age. He is best known for his book Rich Christian in an Age of Hunger. Sider's more recent book, Just Politics, advocates against the death penalty, and in favor of the redistribution of wealth. In addition, he called for extremely high taxes on fossil fuels, so as to “double or triple the prices of these products.”  In his criticisms of Donald Trump in 2020, Ron Sider made the claim that the Democrats' efforts to “reduce poverty” would do a good job of reducing abortion in America whereas Donald Trump would not “substantially change” or reduce abortions in the U.S. Indiana passes pro-life bill with exceptions The Indiana State Senate passed a bill banning abortion with the exceptions of rape and incest.  However, the pro-life Indiana Right to Life group has decried the bill as “woefully” inadequate, failing “ to provide any meaningful enforcement provisions.” Amidst flooding, Kentucky governor asks for prayer At least 28 persons are confirmed dead, from the extensive flooding in Eastern Kentucky. Democrat Governor Andy Beshear is asking the nation to pray. BESHEAR: “The next couple of days are going to be hard. We've got rain, and maybe even a lot of rain, that's going to hit the same areas. “Please pray for the people in these areas. And, if you are in the areas that are going to get hit by rain, make sure you stay safe. Make sure you have a place that is higher ground.” Jeremiah 14:22 asks, “Are there any among the idols of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the heavens give showers? When ISIS swept into Mosul in June 2014, the organisation immediately began a campaign to wipe out the most important part of the northern Iraqi city's unique heritage - its a multi-sectarian culture. Mosul was home to ancient and modern Christian communities, Yazidis, Shia and Sunni Muslims, and at one time, Jews. Throughout the period of ISIS occupation Omar Mohammad, a history lecturer at Mosul University, risked his life daily to get news of the city out to the world via the internet. His Mosul Eye blog became essential reading. Now living in exile in Europe, Omar de Mosul, as he is known, is reconstructing the history ISIS tried and failed to wipe out, including the history of the city's Jewish community. Presenter Michael Goldfarb spends time with Omar as he collects oral histories from the remaining Jews who were born and grew up in the city. Most Jews left the city in the early 1950s in the upheaval following the establishment of Israel. He also speaks with Rabbi Carlos Huerta, retired US army chaplain, who spent the first year after the US overthrew Saddam Hussein in Mosul with the 101st Airborne. He had no idea about the rich Jewish history of the place and spent much of his time investigating it. In this episode, Alice interviews historian Dr Omar Mohammed, founder of the acclaimed Mosul Eye blog. When ISIS captured Mosul in 2014, Omar began posting regular updates to keep people informed and to counter misinformation – and his blog became a vital source of information both for those within the city and the wider world. He posted regularly throughout the occupation and liberation of Mosul, and has since turned his attention to Mosul's recovery, using the blog to promote cross-cultural understanding as well as raising Mosul's profile internationally. Mosul Eye has a lot to teach us about representations of conflict, particularly those that are produced while a war is ongoing, and it is a real testament to what the public documentation of a war can achieve, in the aftermath as well as during a conflict. In the podcast, Omar explains that he began keeping a diary to document what life was like on the ground during conflict after the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. However, it was only in 2014 when ISIS/Daesh captured Mosul, that he started blogging publicly, with no idea at the time how long his blog - or the occupation - would last. As a historian, he wanted to provide the people of Mosul and wider audiences with accurate accounts of events as they were unfolding in real time; but he also used the blog to preserve the names of victims and build up a reliable record for posterity, so that future generations could understand what went on.  Crucially, his blog posts narrated many small, everyday details, painting a holistic picture of the conflict rather than focusing on major events. His correction of fake news and exposure of atrocities meant that he and the blog were targeted by Daesh, but he persevered despite the risks, viewing his writing as a way to fight back. Over time, Mosul Eye became so well known that major news organisations turned to it to verify or flesh out their stories, and Omar was able to leverage the growing influence he had to help rescue people and families from the city and collect books for the University's stricken library. Since Mosul's liberation, Omar has used his position to put Mosul on the global map in positive ways, building bridges between different communities and kick-starting a major tree-planting programme, to help the people of Mosul visualise a greener, more peaceful future and to connect them to wider efforts to address climate change. His blog has helped him and others to grasp the profound and sometimes unseen destruction that war brings; but it also testifies to the power of history writing and digital media to promote peace, healing and renewal. Among other questions, Alice asked:what prompted Omar to begin blogging as 'Mosul Eye' in 2014 and what his initial goal waswhat aspects of the occupation and liberation he decided to focus on, and whyhow the people of Mosul, the media and the wider international community responded to Mosul Eyewhat role his blog played in the 'information war' which accompanies conflict in the digital agehow different live blogging is from writing the history of a conflict with the benefit of hindsightwhat role blogging can play in helping people visualise peace/renewal as well as warWe hope you enjoy the episode! KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky reviews “Noura” by Heather Raffo, a co-production of Marin Theatre and Golden Thread, at Marin Theatre Company through Feb. 9, 2020. Text of review (audio is slightly different). The cost of war is always high. It's high at the start, through violence, destruction and the death of soldiers and innocent civilians. It's high later on through the rebuilding process, and it becomes higher still when, through unintended consequences, everything falls apart. That happened to Mosul, one of Iraq's largest cities, surviving the American invasionand then succumbing to the horrors of the ISIS takeover. When ISIS came in, Assyrian Christians were forced to leave their homes and their lives. Many came to America, and those exiled Iraqis are the subjects of Noura, a play by Heather Raffo, at Marin Theatre Company through February 9th, in a co-production with Golden Thread. It's Christmas, and Noura and her husband Tareq, have been living in New York City for the past eight years. They're expecting a visit from Maryam, an orphan girl who grew up in a convent, whom Noura sponsored for school in America. Tareq was a surgeon in Mosul but now can't operate because his hands never stop shaking. Noura was an architect, but once in America, she stopped pursuing her profession. Because of all the upheaval, she's no longer sure who she is. Iraqi? American? What is she? It's driving her crazy, and she's not making it easy on her husband, her young son, or their best friend, the muslim Rafa'a, whom Noura knew as a child growing up in Mosul. And then when Maryamm shows up, she's not at all what Noura expected. What Heather Raffo has done, and done well, is show how deep the collateral damage of war can run. Noura and Tareq have a nice life, their son is fully American, but they are neither here nor there. Iraq can never leave them, though realistically they know they can never go back. Even if they could, the Mosul Noura knew is gone forever. Denmo Ibrahim rules the stage as Noura, who wavers between being supportive of others, and anger that she's lost control of what's important.. Maya Narzai as the forthright Maryam and Mattico David as the supportive Tareq give equally strong performances, joined by Abraham Makany as Rafa'a. For most of its running time, the play brilliantly lays out the full brunt of the family's life as refugees. But then at the end, melodrama takes over. Every question is answered as a series of personal secrets are revealed. But really – there's no need. In a political play, the political IS personal. Noura by Heather Raffo, a co-production of Golden Thread and Marin Theatre Company plays at Marin Theatre Company thru February 9th. For more information you can go to Marin theatre.org. Yazidis gathered in the north of Paris to commemorate the genocide which began on 3 August 2014. The survivors and their children are refugees in France. They all have a vivid memory of that day when they left a part of themselves in the Sinjar mountains. The laughter and shouts of children playing on the narrow stretch of green grass liven up the Nelson Mandela Sports Centre in Sarcelles. They are playing next to the only monument in France commemorating the beginning of the Yazidi genocide on 3 August 2014. The town of Sarcelles, north of Paris, inaugurated the memorial on 22 May 2019. Not far away, there are two other monuments commemorating the Armenian and Assyrian genocides. The Yazidi children are blissfully unaware of the sombre occasion; the adults have gathered to remember the beginning of the Yazidi genocide which took place in Sinjar region in north eastern Iraq. Thousands were killed by the Islamic State armed group who regarded the Yazidis as heretics. The women were raped and enslaved. The boys were enrolled as child soldiers. Those who refused to convert to Islam were executed. The Yazidis, or Ezidis, have their own language and culture. Their centuries-old religion is among the oldest monotheistic pre-Abrahamic faith. Raising awareness Farhad Shamo-Roto organised the event in Sarcelles. He is the president of Voice of Ezidis, an association he recently created to raise awareness about his people, compile information about the genocide and provide help to the Yazidis living in refugee camps in Iraq. 25-year-old Shamo-Roto came to France on 4 November 2017 and was later granted refugee status. He believes remembrance is important, however painful it may be. “On this day, the Yazidi families, each with a horrific story, want to be together and it’s important that our children and the next generation understand what happened to us,” he explains. “We also want to show the Ezidi people living in tragic conditions in Iraq that we are remembering you and our heart is bleeding at every moment.” Escaping to Sinjar mountains Shamo-Roto was a 20-year-old biology student in 2014. He was in his home-town of Guhbal in Sinjar region when ISIS started closing in, blocking all the routes to the small town. “It was one of the hardest few hours in my life. With my family and relatives, we fled Guhbal on 3 August 2014, after midnight. We walked 20 kilometres to reach the mountains,” he remembers. “We knew the terrorists were coming to kill us. We knew they intended to kidnap our daughters. I had one cousin and two sisters. Our lives were not important. We were just trying to save them because we knew that the ISIS fighters were going to turn the girls into sexual slaves,” he added. A 24-year-old Yazidi girl, who spoke to RFI under conditions of anonymity, said 3 August brings back very painful memories. “This day is like hell for me. It hurts so much,” she says with eyes red from crying. “The past is past but I did not forget and I will not forget.” “Normally, I smile and look happy because I have to be strong for my family and the people around me,” she adds. From Kocho village to Paris Samson Husein is a 43-year-old mother from the village of Kocho in Sinjar region. Her husband and three sons were taken by ISIS. She doesn’t know if they are still alive. She came to France in December 2018 as part of a resettlement programme set up by French President Emmanuel Macron with the support of 2018 Nobel Peace Laureate Nadia Murad, a female survivor of ISIS. This programme aims to provide protection to 100 vulnerable Yazidi women and their children, victims of ISIS. Samson Husein is now living in France as a refugee with one son and two daughters. She does not think she could ever get rid of her immense sadness. “This month is the most difficult time in my life. I lost everything. I lost my mother, my husband, five of my brothers. I lost 74 members of my family. They were taken from Kocho,” she says. “The only thing I want to do, is go back to Iraq, to carry out the rituals on the bones of my relatives. That’s all I have left of them. And I have not even been able to do that. “The United Nations will now open the mass graves in Iraq, I hope to go. Maybe I could identify some of them.” Slowly realising it is a genocide Diler Alhamad was 22 years old when he fled the small town of Telqassab at 7:15 AM on 3 August 2014 in the car with his family. “When the sun rose, the ISIS snippers started shooting at us. The Kurdish troops had already withdrawn from the area. "Some of us fled to the mountains with ISIS fighters chasing us. We left our cars and were on foot to climb the mountain. But the elderly, the sick and the handicapped couldn’t follow us, so they stayed [behind] at the foot of the mountain. "When ISIS arrived, some agreed to convert to Islam. ISIS regrouped those who refused, poured gasoline [on them] and burned them,” Alhamad recollects. Alhamad said that the “most horrible moment” for him was when, after he came down from hiding in the mountains, it dawned on him that the killings of Yazidis were carefully planned. He says that he often wonders why he is still alive when his friends died in the massacre. “Did the Gods want to torture me all my life, I asked myself. After some time I said no. Maybe I survived and I am alive to become the voice and witness of what happened. For me now, I have to speak. It is like a duty,” he declares. Alhamad is convinced that most of the Yazidi who survived the genocide wished they were in the mass graves. He came to France on 10 August 2016 with his parents and a sister. They now live in the town of Soissons as refugees. Another sister, who is now a refugee in Germany, was formerly taken by ISIS. “When your sister is in captivity and she is just two kilometers away from you. And you know how ISIS will treat her, rape her, use her like a slave. And you can’t do anything. So, why are you living? In there, I lost my dignity, I lost my respect,” he declares. Alhamad added that neither his father nor himself thought that the international community would have abandoned them. “Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, we never thought they will leave us,” he says. Farhad Shamo-Roto echoes his sentiment: “Unfortunately, the international community is still silent and did not start any step on the ground to help the Ezidi community and build a safe environment for them.” Follow Voice of Ezidis on Twitter @VEzidis Follow Diler Alhamad on Twitter @DilerAlmandica1 Follow Zeenat Hansrod on Twitter @zxnt

As we approach a new year, it is clear that 2017 will be remembered as a momentous year for news. Perhaps the biggest story of the year will turn out to be this: How the United States defeated ISIS and its caliphate, and almost no one took notice. When ISIS was roaring to power, under the watchful eye of the Obama Administration, no one could figure out how to stop them. In less than a year, under the military guidance of the Trump Administration, ISIS has been defeated and Iraq and Syria have taken back large swaths of their countries that were formerly under ISIS control. One would expect the mainstream media to cover this as they would the end of any other war. But—for the most part—we’ve heard only crickets. The truth is reporting good news under the Trump Administration seems to be increasingly difficult for the mainstream press. They can’t even acknowledge when a major victory has been won. Story of the year number one, defeating ISIS. Story number two? Losing the mainstream media. One is good. The other is horrible.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nowhere to Hide follows male nurse Nori Sharif through five years of dramatic change, providing unique access into one of the world’s most dangerous and inaccessible areas – the “triangle of death” in central Iraq. Initially filming stories of survivors and the hope of a better future as American and Coalition troops retreat from Iraq in 2011, conflicts continue with Iraqi militias, and the population flees accompanied by most of the hospital staff. Nori is one of the few who remain. When ISIS advances on Jalawla in 2014 and takes over the city, he too must flee with his family at a moment’s notice, and turns the camera on himself. The film stretches over a period of five years, beginning with the hope of a better future, to witnessing the growth of ISIS (the Islamic State), and eventually the fall of Nori’s home town. As Nori keeps filming throughout this period of time, he begins to turn the camera on himself. Nori’s narrative represents persistence, hope and faith. But, in this new reality of being squeezed between two giant forces – ISIS on one side and the Iraqi militias on the other, is it possible to remain impartial and keep his family intact? Will he and his family survive, and be able to rebuild the country and the oasis that lies hidden behind the smoke and rubble? Director Zaradasht Ahmed talks with us about the utter devastation and fading hope of normality that now pervades his beloved country. For news and updates go to Nowhere to Hide
