A pond-side podcast about biracial belonging in the arts, recorded live. Maria Birch-Morunga is a Māori/Pakehā facilitator and craft queen. Kate Robinson is an Iranian/Australian family violence lawyer and artist. Together, they're two biracial women who are endlessly fascinated by the juggling of cultures, identities, and family gossip that can come with being mixed-race. Their podcast Being Biracial is filled with heartfelt and funny interviews with guests discussing the dualities of living across multiple cultures. And now they're bringing the pod to MPavilion for a special live recording.  Joining them for a chat is MPavilion Season 11 collaborator Joel Bray, a proud Wiradjuri dancer and performance-maker, and Scotty So, a Melbourne/Narrm-based artist who works across media, including ceramic, painting, photography, sculptures, site-responsive installation, videos, and performance. As the Artistic Director of Joel Bray Dance, Joel Bray makes his work in collaboration with Elders, Community and Country, often in unorthodox spaces that draw on his Wiradjuri heritage. Using humour, Joel engages audiences in rituals that touch on themes of sex, history, trauma, and healing.  Driven by the thrill of camp, Scotty So explores the often-contradictory relationship between humour and sincerity, creating a scene of para-fiction through the manipulation of found objects and existing imageries in the living experience. Born and raised in Hong Kong, So's work has been shown in Australia, China, Hong Kong, and Europe, including the National Gallery of Victoria. Scotty So is represented by MARS Gallery in Australia. This is a celebration of shared stories and a peek behind the concrete walls into the work that makes up the Home Ground program.

Imagine if… creativity was as important as literacy, maths or science? What could we, as a species, be capable of achieving if we prioritised it and gave it the right conditions to flourish? These are questions posed by the late great Sir Ken Robinson. His daughter and closest collaborator Kate Robinson now continues his work which she describes as being a ‘love letter to human potential' and Holly was lucky enough to meet with her recently.  In this interview, Kate shares her wisdom on how we should be raising the next generation when it comes to their education and allowing them to find the ‘element' that they love most – a phrase that Holly likens to ‘finding their diamond'.  Kate delves into her own experiences and struggles with the constraints of the education system, and explains how we should be communicating with our young, why university is not the only option to achieve a successful career, and also how the education system is quite literally killing the young people of today.  Is there hope for change? In today's episode, Dr Kathryn Surasky and Dr Kate Robinson sit down with Dr Ruby Chow for a discussion about her upcoming internship with McKee-Pownall! Dr. Ruby Chow will be joining our practice for a 13-month internship. Dr. Chow previously worked with us in the summer of 2020 as a technician in our Uxbridge practice and we are delighted to welcome her back as our first intern after her recent graduation from The Ontario Veterinary College. We are excited to start this program at a time when the equine industry is suffering from a drastic decline in veterinarians. Our ability to provide a good experience for an intern will help ensure that the equine veterinary industry has new practitioners entering the profession and will help us to identify future veterinary associates for MPES.  An intern is a graduated and fully licensed veterinarian who is seeking additional time after completing vet school to be mentored in additional aspects of the veterinary industry. In our case, an intern is seeking mentorship, experience, knowledge and skill-building in equine practice. Interns may be newly graduated veterinarians, or they may be experienced veterinarians who have decided to pursue specialized training in a specific area of the industry. So what is an internship? An internship is the term used to describe the position an intern takes. An internship is intended to be a year of mentorship where at the end the intern has gained significantly more confidence, experience and skills in a specific area of veterinary medicine (like equine practice) than they would after a year of practice on their own. In return, equine practice (in general) gains a confident, experienced and skilled veterinarian to join the workforce.   Almost every veterinarian at McKee-Pownall has come through an internship program of some sort and we are excited to be able to give back to our industry by offering this program.

Kate Robinson is a writer, speaker, and co- founder of a number of initiatives dedicated to the legacy of her father, Sir Ken Robinson. On the show, Kate shares some backstory on her father's life, and the journey that led to her completing his final piece of work. In Sir Ken and Kate's perspectives, there are 3 myths regarding creativity that hinder our advancement as a collective.  Creativity is about a certain group of people, “the creatives” Creativity is about certain things/subjects (music, writing, art, dance, etc) You're either creative or you're not  The truth is, creativity lives in each of us, it is a muscle that can be trained and strengthened, and there is space for creativity in every activity. Sir Ken and Kate define creativity as “the process of having original ideas that have value.” It is an ongoing process of idea creation and evaluation, and it can be applied to anything.  True change comes from those who dare to imagine. Creativity comes from within, and progress comes from diversity of thought. Identify your passion, tap into your creativity, and encourage others to do the same.  https://imagine-if.com/ Enjoy! Kate's beloved Dad was Sir Ken Robinson, whose TED Talk about education remains the most watched TED Talk nearly 2 decades after he delivered it. Probably because he is so charismatic, funny and wise. And because education touches us all, whether we have children or not. If you haven't watched it, here's the link - it's worth it! Kate and I talked about her own bumpy road through school and how her parents ‘unschooled' her at the age of 16. She also shared her hopes and fears as she puts her own 3 year old daughter Adeline onto the first rung of the education system. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The last year has brought a lot of change and a lot of new learnings. And from healthcare to poverty to racial justice, social good organizations are looking to find new solutions that meaningfully impact these important issues. However, as with any big social impact initiatives, that will require that organizations embrace learning from the inevitable failures along the way. That's why today we're bringing back an episode from August 2019 featuring Kate Robinson, executive director of the documentary film Failing Forward: On the Road to Social Impact. Kate talked to host Steve MacLaughlin about how nonprofits and other social good organizations can use failure to make a bigger impact. Listen to the episode to hear what Kate Robinson has to say about learning culture, the questions that organizations should be asking to improve programs, and what role funders play in the process of failure and learning. Topics Discussed in This Episode: The purpose of Kate's documentary, Failing Forward: On the Road to Social Impact The characteristics of a learning culture The pressure on nonprofits to appear effective Using data as a tool to learn and drive decision making Questions that organizations should ask to learn and improve programs Overcoming resistance within organizations to “failing fast” The dangers of not having a learning culture open to failure The role of funders in adjusting perspectives to make learning from failure a bigger part of the equation Building trust between funders and grantees to allow for more transparency Resources: Kate Robinson Failing Forward

Just how does one hit their annual revenue goal just a few months into the year? What does it take to achieve this ourselves? And what can we learn from those who've gone before us? Well today, I'm bringing a very special guest onto the show to answer that question. Kate Robinson, who you'll find on Instagram @katerobinsonphoto is one of my students inside my online program The Modern Marketing Collective, where I teach women how to book more of their ideal clients through Instagram. (Go to emilyosmond.com/waitlist to join the waitlist for when doors next open!). Kate is a wedding photographer with more than 10 years of experience, 150 weddings under her belt and features in Style Me Pretty, Ruffled Blog and more, she creates timeless images for modern couples. Passionate not only about wedding photography, but making a positive impact in her couples' lives by sending them different resources to strengthen their relationship for a long lasting marriage, Kate has successfully re-launched her photography business in 3 different cities, has 2 kids and a cute husband who is a Scientist. By May 2019, Kate had already achieved her annual bookings goal. (We recorded this a few months ago to put our discussion into context). So without further ado… let's bring on Kate to go behind her business! MY DETAILS: Website | Instagram | Free Resources Write me a review & I'll give you a shoutout in a future episode! Kate Robinson is a brain injury survivor who was involved in a plane accident in her high school years. She experienced retrograde amnesia after the accident occurred. Her story is incredible so I won’t say anything more, besides what she has accomplished since. Kate ended up finishing high school, graduating college with a degree in French, and decided she wanted to help other brain injury survivors. She knew how much counseling helped her and she decided to become one. Today, she is a licensed professional counselor and has her own practice. Her insights are unique, and have unraveled new insight about life after brain injury that I would never have thought of without having met her. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.   Her story begins at 5:36
