Kayla Treanor is a 2X World Champion, 2X All-World Team Selection, All time leading scorer in USA lacrosse history, 4X NCAA All American, 3X Tewaaraton Finalist and Head Coach for Syracuse Women's Lacrosse. She has also failed to achieve her dreams several times experiencing the reality of humility. Growing up, her parents never forced her to play even though she almost quit several times. Her college coach, Gary Gait invested fully in her and showed her the power of ultimate belief. Over her career, she has learned not to be afraid to dominate, avoid comparison with others, and the importance of being herself. She chooses to prioritize passion, hard work and appreciation and always encourages her athletes to “play with joy in their hearts.” @kaylatreanor, @cusewlax, @usa_wlax

In today's episode we are going to keep it simple and stick to random news. To start, we'll talk about some World Sixes action that took place this weekend where we got to see the United States, Canada and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy do battle and I was suprised that I really liked what I saw in terms of highlights. I think I will be a bit more willing after this weekend to push this, and I'll talk about why in this episode. Random college news that I'll rip through... Gary Gait is allowing the Syracuse kids the freedom to explore their creativity on the field. Not a surprise, and not like Desko didn't allow them to get icky with it (he did for sure), but to hear that Gait is encouraging them to be creative is exciting news for Cuse lacrosse fans. Sam Handley of Penn, Matt Kinnear of InsideLacrosse thinks he may be a legit Tewaraaton contender in 2022 and I couldn't agree more. The kid put up a monster year in 2019 as a rookie before getting injured in the first game of 2020 against Maryland (but not before putting up 3 goals and 2 assists). After not getting to play in 2021, this kid is going to be playing some mean lacrosse and I think he'll be one of the nations best and a name everyone will know by the end of 2022. OK, so news first, Gary Gait, Syracuse's new head coach, only the 5th in the programs history, wasted no time making headlines in hiring Dave Pietramala, former adversary, and long time head coach at Cuse rival Johns Hopkins. Pietramala is one of the most storied players and coaches in the game. Largely considered the greatest defensive lacrosse player in the history of the sport, Petro has won national titles as both a player at Hopkins and as a coach (2005 and 2007). So this hire is huge news. Potentially huge because it's possible both of Pietramala's sons could end up ditching North Carolina for Syracuse as well now that this change has been made. My sources are telling me it's pretty much a done deal, but we'll see. Virginia won an instant classic over Maryland by a score of 17-16 capturing their second national title in a row, the first back to back championship in the programs history. Connor Shellenberger was a huge part of the win going for 4 goals and 2 assists. The redshirt freshman was too much for Maryland to handle all day long. Teammate Matt Moore also put up 4 goals and 2 helpers in the win, both players taking only 7 shots. That efficiency in scoring would prove key down the stretch as Maryland turned up the heat defensively and started to battle back late. UVA Keeper Alex Rode and the Cavaliers defense played an excellent game, outplaying their counterparts for the Terps just enough to squeak out the win. Rode's last second save to seal the victory will go down in Virginia history as one of the biggest moments of all time. Tewaaraton winner Jared Bernhardt was held to 2 goals and 3 assists, an excellent outing to be sure, but a touch off of his season average. Petey LaSalla won the lions share of face-offs for the Cav's, but the Terps forcing turnovers between the boxes evened out that possession battle, and allowed Maryland to keep pace right down to the end of the game. In other news, Gary Gait was named Syracuse's 5th lacrosse coach in over 100 years as John Desko decided to retire while I was walking around Magic Kingdom. The transition should be as smooth as coaching changes can go with Desko offering to help out in any way he can, and Gait obviously accepting his former coach's offer. Good morning lacrosse fans. I really hate to start a newsletter off this way, but there was an incident at a game last week that left me sleepless. Please know that racism has no part in our society, let alone the lacrosse community. I've been to almost 30 games this year from Weber to Timpanogos and everywhere in between. Usually driving home I think about the game, the fans, the officials, the coaches, the players, and after most games, I think to myself, ‘we have to be better.' I say ‘we' because despite being on different teams and having different jerseys, we are all part of the lacrosse community, which, despite being the largest it's ever been, is still small. When our sport is shown favorably, it's favorable for all of us. When it's shown negatively, it's a notch against all of us. So let me take a moment to address some things I've seen:Everyone - It's not okay to use racist terms on the lacrosse field - ever. I'm not going to tell you how to live your personal life, but it has no place in the lacrosse community. Do better.Coaches - It's not okay to taunt or mock a player on the opposing team - ever. It's also not okay to degrade the people working the table or talking to opposing fans while coaching. Also, please fill out the officials' feedback form so we can help improve that aspect of the game too. Do better.Assistant Coaches - Stop yelling at the refs. You ask your players to abide by the rules so you should too. Do better.Officials - Let's be honest, some refs are there to collect a check and go home who have no interest in helping the game. This is bad for our sport. If this is you, please stop. Also, please take control of games that are getting out of hand. It's not hard to see it. Do better.Fans - If you're an adult yelling at an opposing player (14-18 year old) then you need to stop. Do better. With all that said, I've been to games this year where the fans have been great, the coaches have coached well and the officials have been excellent but unfortunately, it's rare. We need to be better at trying to make this scenario more common and it takes all of us, not just one team or one ref or one coach.I feel the season as a whole has been a success. It hasn't been without hiccups or controversy, but overall, Year 1 of sanctioning has been what I thought it would. It's a bittersweet time of year. The regular season is ending but playoffs are on the horizon. As a heads up, the playoff brackets will be revealed on Wednesday morning. I think they will be released on the UHSAA Twitter account but also on MaxPreps. Also, I try to be respectful to your inbox but I'm likely going to send 2-3 newsletters per week as I do my best to cover the playoffs. Interview w/ Alta Head Coach Brandon HorobaAlta Head Coach Brandon HorobaMy podcast guest this week is Alta Head Coach Brandon Horoba. Should the Braves win, they would be co-champs with Farmington. Region 6: Olympus - Champ, 4-0 in Region 6.Region 7: Mountain Ridge - Champ, 12-0 in Region 7.Region 8: Park City - Champ, 7-0 in Region 8.Region 10: Juan Diego & Waterford are co-champs. Region 11: Green Canyon - Champ, 10-0 in Region 11.RPI Update / BracketsI, like you, was also shocked that the UHSAA RPI was taken down on Wednesday. I was told it was to create a little excitement around the bracket release and also take time to make sure all the scores are entered and the RPI is correct. With that said, Taylor Redd and Jordan Harris took the time to recreate the RPI and they published it here. It will be updated the remaining two days of the season for the 15 games left. Here is what the brackets would look like if the season ended today. Region 9 ChampsThe Southern Utah teams that comprise Region 9 held a championship on Saturday with Snow Canyon beating Canyon View, 9-1. Let's hope we can get these teams included in the UHSAA next season! No. 1 Park City - The Miners continue to roll with a 23-0 win over Payson, 26-1 win over Provo and 16-3 win over Lone Peak last week. The Miners host No. 5 Olympus on Tuesday to conclude the season. No. 2 Skyridge - Skyridge narrowly beat No. 10 Corner Canyon on Tuesday, 9-8, then beat Pleasant Grove, 15-5, on Thursday. The Falcons will travel to Highland on Tuesday. No. 3 Brighton - The Bengals beat No. 5 Olympus on Friday, 13-12, to claim the Region 6 title. Brighton pulled ahead on a goal by Hunter Doyle with a little over a minute left. Olympus won the ensuing draw and possessed, earning a free-position shot with 10 seconds left. On the whistle, the Olympus player dodged then shot high but was saved by Hailey Bangerter who held on to the ball to secure the win. See my attempt to film it here. Brighton travels to No. 9 Davis on Monday then hosts No. 4 Mountain Ridge on Tuesday. The latest public RPI had Brighton at No. 10. No. 4 Mountain Ridge - The Sentinels dominated Timpanogos on Tuesday, 14-2, then beat Mountain View, 20-1, on Thursday. Mountain Ridge travels to No. 3 Brighton on Tuesday. No. 5 Olympus - The Titans beat rival Skyline on Wednesday, 20-0, then fell to No. 3 Brighton, 13-12, on Friday. The Titans will take on No. 1 Park City on Tuesday. No. 6 Waterford - The Ravens bested Cedar Valley on Tuesday, 23-2, and will take on Woods Cross on Tuesday. No. 7 Herriman - The Mustangs weren't tested in its two games this week as they beat Bingham, 22-3, on Tuesday and West Jordan, 20-7, on Thursday. Two region games remain for the Mustangs: Monday at home against Riverton and Tuesday at West. No. 8 Alta - The Hawks beat Lehi, 18-0, on Tuesday and beat Orem, 28-3, on Thursday. The Hawks host Timpanogos on Tuesday. No. 9 Davis - The Darts lost for the first time this season on Thursday in overtime to Fremont. You can see the game-winning goal here. Davis hosts No. 3 Brighton on Monday and travels to Syracuse on Tuesday. No. 10 Corner Canyon - The Chargers re-enter the polls after taking No. 2 Skyridge to the end, but lost, 9-8. Both times these two teams have played, Skyridge has won by 1. Corner Canyon then beat American Fork, 10-8, to finish the season. Region StandingsRegion 1: Davis - In theory, they haven't clinched the region since they still play Syracuse. If Syracuse wins (they lost in the first meeting, 17-6) and Fremont beats Weber, there would be a three-way tie for first. Of course, if Davis wins on Tuesday, they are the lone region champ at 13-1. Region 3: Herriman - Even if the Mustangs lose to Riverton on Monday, they likely won't lose to West on Tuesday, thus, pending bizarre results, the Mustangs are the lone region champ at 12-0.Region 4: Skyridge - Champ, 10-0 in Region 4Region 5: Farmington - Champ, 10-0 in Region 5Region 6: Brighton - Champ, 4-0 in Region 6Region 7: Mountain Ridge - Champ, 12-0 in Region 7 Region 8: Park City - Technically haven't clinched since they play one more region game but let's be honest, they'll win and be 8-0 in Region 8. Region 10: Waterford - Champ, 4-0 in Region 10Region 11: Bear River - Champ, 10-0 in Region 11Interesting that all but one region had its champion go undefeated in region play. Q&A with Brighton Senior Haley TaylorBrighton Senior Haley Taylor | c/o Scott OsbornMy Q&A today is with Brighton Senior and team captain, Haley Taylor, who leads the 13-0 Bengals offense with 71 goals and 14 assists. Tylor has had multiple 7 point or more games including 7 goals and 5 assists against Jordan. Taylor is committed to playing NCAA D-I lacrosse at the University of Oregon and study Architecture. “HayTay Taylor is incredible on and off the field,” said Brighton Head Coach Melissa Nash. “She is the first girl that will grab your eye in any lacrosse game. She plays with such energy and grace that you are naturally drawn to her, whether she has the ball or not. She makes everything she does look easy - from her draw controls, big ground balls to her powerful shots - left and right-handed. She is fun to watch and fun to coach. Haley puts in more work on her game than anyone, while also taking 3 AP classes (just this year), being a National Merit Scholar and Sterling Scholar. Aside from her stick skills, pure speed and big brain academics (and her incredible art), HayTay is a good person. Syracuse lacrosse legend and women's head coach, Gary Gait, joins the show to discuss the season opening win and their next game which is against the number one team in the country, Boston College.
Syracuse lacrosse has a unique history with the #22. The jersey number 22 has a long standing history in the sport of lacrosse. It has been doled out to a teams best player, or a team captain long before Gary Gait first wore the jersey at Syracuse and started a trend of Syracuse's best player wearing the number while playing at a crazy high level. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support
"I operated under this belief that there was no such thing as a nice defenseman." A Princeton University grad, Dave Morrow was a National Champion, two-time defensive player of the year, two-time Team USA player, and two-time world champion. As decorated of an on-field resume as his, Morrow's greatest impact on the sport has been what he's created off of it. He built Warrior Sports -- now the largest sporting goods manufacturer in lacrosse -- from his dorm room his junior year in college. To fund the company, Morrow raised a seed investment from his father and college roommate, and immediately used it to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue in year one. His biggest challenge? He was a starting defender for the USA national team, playing in overtime of the world championship game, trying to defend the best player in the world (Gary Gait), with a gold medal on the line, and the future of his business -- Warrior was the team sponsor. On the show, we talk about what it's like to be a young entrepreneur drinking from the firehose, facing fear, taking on exorbitant risk, finding solutions, and executing. In 2004, New Balance acquired Warrior for an undisclosed amount. Morrow continues to operate as the company's CEO, building the hockey and soccer business, and continuing to innovate with new products and intellectual property. What if, instead of worrying about winning games, we got our athletes to focus first on 'Winning the Day'? If they focused on their very best, working for the greater good of the team, and getting better every day, what kind of transformation would occur? Bio Hall of Fame head coach Cindy Timchal was named the first women's lacrosse coach at the United States Naval Academy on August 5, 2006, and in short order, has laid the foundation for a Navy program that is moving quickly in its quest to become a NCAA Division I power. Timchal, who is entering her 36th year as a head coach, is the NCAA's all-time leader in career wins (491) division I women's college lacrosse. Additionally, her eight national titles are the eighth most by a coach in a women's sport in NCAA history, and the 26th most in all sports, men and women combined. In her 10 seasons at the helm of the Midshipmen program, Navy has accumulated a terrific 155-43 (.783) record, won five Patriot League Championships and has advanced to five NCAA Tournaments (2010, ’11, ’12, ‘13, ‘17). In 2017, Timchal and the Navy lacrosse team made history as it became the first Service Academy team from a women’s sport to advance to the NCAA Final Four. Timchal's coaching career got its start at Northwestern in 1982. During her nine-year tenure with the Wildcats, she compiled a 76-40 record (.655) while leading the program to five NCAA appearances. While at Northwestern, Timchal made it to the quarterfinals, earning appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 1983, '84, '86, '87, and '88. In 1991, she made the move to College Park to revive and renew the strong tradition of the University of Maryland lacrosse program. Prior to her arrival at the storied program, Maryland’s last title had come in 1986, but almost immediately the Terrapins restored their reign atop the sport. Timchal's first year saw a 14-3 mark and a trip to the NCAA finals. By 1992, the lacrosse world sensed something special was on the horizon at Maryland. Despite being at a place with a rich history in lacrosse, few could have predicted that a dynasty so powerful was on the horizon. With a 14-1 record, the Terrapins took the 1992 national title – the third in school history. Individually, her athletes have earned countless accolades and awards. Maryland had 21 first team All-Americans in her last nine years, and 13 players took home national offensive, defensive or goalkeeper of the year awards. Jen Adams became the first-ever winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy, which recognizes the top collegiate men's and women's player in the country, and Kelly Coppedge was a finalist in 2004 and 2005. In 1996, Kelly Amonte became the Terps' first four-time All-American, including first-team honors in 1995 and 1996. From Kelly Amonte Hiller to Cathy Reese, Alex Kahoe to Alexis Venechanos, Jen Adams to Kelly Coppedge, the one constant amongst all of the great Maryland players was Timchal. In just five of her 16 seasons at College Park did Timchal lose more than three games in any one season, highlighted by spectacular undefeated runs in 1996 (19-0), 1999 (21-0) and 2001 (23-0). She took Terrapin teams to the NCAA finals in 11 seasons, including an unprecedented stretch of seven straight national championships – the third-longest championship streak in women's NCAA history. In addition, the run puts Timchal in the company of coaching legends like UCLA's John Wooden who won seven straight titles with the UCLA men's basketball program from 1967-73. A total of 53 different student-athletes earned All-America recognition a total of 95 times under Timchal including Kelly Amonte Hiller's four, (1993-96), and three each for Betsy Elder (1992-94), Sarah Forbes (1995-97), Laura Harmon (1993-95), Sascha Newmarch (1996-98), Jen Adams (1999-2001) and Kelly Coppedge (2002-04). In 2005, Acacia Walker earned first team honors, Greta Sommers was named to the second team and Annie Collines was named third team All-America. Adams' third-consecutive selection as Player of the Year in 2000 marked the 10th time one of Timchal's players have earned National Player of the Year honors, including Amonte Hiller, who was named the 1996 NCAA Division I Most Valuable Player. When the ACC's 50th anniversary Women's Lacrosse Team was announced in 2002, Timchal was selected as the head coach of the squad and had coached 22 members of the team. Nationally, 18 of Timchal's players have played on the U.S. Developmental team and five were members of the most recent championship U.S. World Cup team. Seven former Terrapins helped lead Australia to the 2005 World Cup title in Annapolis, including tournament MVP Sarah Forbes. All totaled, 13 Terps represented three countries at the World Cup. Beyond the numbers, though, Timchal has done her part to revolutionize the sport of women's lacrosse. Timchal brought some of the most influential names in the sport through College Park, including former assistant and lacrosse legend Gary Gait, and Terrapin stars Cathy Nelson and Jen Adams. In addition, former Maryland players have become a fixture on national teams and within the collegiate coaching ranks, demonstrating the breadth of Timchal's influence. In 1996, she introduced a new wrinkle to her vast coaching repertoire as she brought aboard the wisdom of California-based spiritual advisor and renowned author Dr. Jerry Lynch to enrich the minds of her student-athletes. That decision complemented the already high level of physical conditioning it takes to excel at the Division I level and has since become a widespread trend used throughout the world of sports. Dave Pietramala is widely regarded as the greatest defenseman in lacrosse history. As a member of the U.S. National Hall of Fame, he’s the only person to have won an NCAA national championship as both a player and coach, and the only person to be named both the NCAA player and coach of the year. Incredible. Pietramala – "Coach Petro" – recruited me to play under him at Johns Hopkins University in 2005, where we competed in three NCAA national championships, and winning two. Coach taught me how to work hard, compete, be humble, and respectful. He always harped on “the little things” – like keeping a clean locker room, hustling in between reps, being the first in line, and making eye contact. Each of these learned tactics translate into professional sports, business, and relationships. On the show, we take a drive down memory lane, revisiting learning moments and major adjustments from my freshman year in college. I was fortunate to step onto the field with one of the best senior classes our sport has ever seen, and one that completed an undefeated season, going 16-0. Coach Petro shares with us his origin story, why he chose to play at Johns Hopkins, and what the one-on-one battles were like with our sport’s greatest player, Gary Gait. In 1990, Pietramala’s coaching career began, taking his first coaching gig as an assistant coach for Gilman high school. From there, he earned a part-time collegiate assistant coaching position that paid him $3,000. To supplement his lower wage, Pietramala worked at an aluminum extrusion factory from 6am to 2pm. His subsequent coaching positions took him through the University of Pennsylvania, Loyola College, and Cornell, where he was named the NCAA Coach of the Year. In 2001, Pietramala took the head coaching position at his alma mater, where he’s helped revitalize the Hopkins program. He’s won two national championships, been to seven Final Fours, sixteen NCAA tournaments, and winner of the 2015 Big 10 conference championship. Other topics from our conversation include: - What makes a high performance competitor - The importance of feedback - Pietramala’s biggest regret - Recruiting: what Pietramala is looking for in a young lacrosse player - I teach him how to use Twitter Enjoy the show.
