David McRaney is a science journalist with a deep interest in brains, minds, and culture. He is the creator of the blog, book, and podcast "You Are Not So Smart," which was initiated to understand self-delusion and motivated reasoning. His journey, however, began with diverse experiences, including construction work, selling leather coats, and owning two pet stores. In 2009, McRaney started his blog, which quickly evolved into an internationally bestselling book, translated into 17 languages, and later into a popular podcast. This podcast, once a part of Boing Boing, features interviews with scientists exploring the psychology of reasoning, decision-making, and judgment. McRaney has authored two more books: "You Are Now Less Dumb," released in 2013, and "How Minds Change," released in 2022. Additionally, he travels globally to give lectures on these subjects. His early career as a newspaper reporter saw him covering Hurricane Katrina, NASA's rocket testing, and more. Beyond journalism, McRaney's career includes roles as an editor, photographer, voiceover artist, television host, journalism teacher, lecturer, and even a tornado survivor. Following "How Minds Change," McRaney wrote, produced, and recorded a six-hour audio documentary delving into the history of the concept and the term "genius." Today, we learn about David's childhood, and early passion for journalism. We have a deep, broad discussion about our decision-making with a realization that we are not that smart. David has some strong comments about the dance between the emotional and the rational brain. We tie it back to investing, the field where we are supposed to be rational and without emotions, but is it really the best advice? My guest shares some thoughts about changing our minds, and how to go about it. Stay tuned until the end, when we talk about the meaning of the word genius. As much as the word might feel familiar, I've been looking at it differently since my conversation with David. https://www.davidmcraney.com/ NEVER INVESTMENT ADVICE. It's Independence Day! There's no better way to celebrate than standing up to a bully. Whether it's a twice-indicted Russian mafia asset running for president, or his cult of violent white supremacists, there's no shortage of bullies running amok these days. Science journalist and bestselling author David McRaney, author of the books How Minds Change and You Are Now Less Dumb, shares his research on how to handle a situation where the person you're talking to insists on an alternative reality, using that to try to gaslight, intimidate, and, in a word, bully.   At Gaslit Nation, one of the questions we often get from our listeners is how to help loved ones lost to a disinformation cult, like QAnon and Trump's Big Lie. From harassing election workers to overwhelming school board meetings to disinformation merchants challenging actual experts to debates (“Debate me, bro!”), the Bannon strategy of flooding the zone with shit has ensnared people, separating families and friends. McRaney shares his surprising insights on how to reach people and provide an empathetic space for them to find their way back. For more on this topic, listen to Gaslit Nation's discussion with cult expert Dr. Janja Lalich, who recommends a slightly approach. Both discussions are essential guides for navigating this time of rampant disinformation and toxic political cults.   In our bonus episode, McRaney takes the Gaslit Nation Self-Care Q&A. What happens when two sides are in disagreement and both think they are right? How do you change a mind? Some tactics can be persuasive, but others can backfire and result in no movement or even extra resistance. There are things that can be learned from these disagreements, and tools that can be used to resolve them.David McRaney is a journalist, podcaster and author. His latest book is How Minds Change: The Surprising Science of Belief, Opinion, and Persuasion where David explores different methodologies for changing both one's own mind and the minds of others, exploring what works, what does not, and what was surprising along the way. He is also the author of the books You Are Now Less Dumb, and You Are Not So Smart, which shares that title with his podcast.David and Greg talk about David's experiences researching his books and what he found out about changing minds as he was studying how minds change. They talk about experiments with coin flips and card colors where seemingly arbitrary decisions are motivated by unconscious thought processes. They also discuss the social phenomenon of ‘The Dress' and what science could tell us about people on either side of the color line. Episode Quotes:Why do we tend to make decisions that are easier to justify?22:52: If you deny people the information that they will use to justify their decision, they won't make the decision because they can't. We do not make decisions unless we're allowed the opportunity to justify them. And the other side of that spectrum is unfortunately, that means we'll also tend to only make the decisions that are easiest to justify, not the ones that are "best" or have the most factual evidence underpinning them.19:10: When it comes to arguing about facts, figures, politics, hypotheticals, and abstractions, the facts often remain inert. They stay the same, and the reasons don't change. Your motivation to search for reasons changes. An important part of how we flow from acting to thinking21:42: You have people and put them in situations where they have to rationalize and justify their decisions. They will always choose the option that is easiest to justify, and if you deny them the opportunity to justify their decisions, they just stop. They just don't make anything. It's such an important part of how we flow from thinking to acting.Defining an epiphany47:58: An epiphany is the moment you realize you have changed your mind. It's not the moment you change your mind. It's the moment you realize you have already changed your mind. And it's a shocking, thrilling, visceral experience. And it needs to be. Show Links:Recommended Resources:Marshall McLuhanThe Enigma of ReasonThe Bruner Postman ExperimentDisagreeing about Crocs and socks: Creating profoundly ambiguous color displaysThe DressGuest Profile:Speaker's Profile at the Harry Walker AgencyDavid McRaney's WebsiteDavid McRaney on LinkedInDavid McRaney on TwitterHis Work:You Are Not So Smart PodcastHow Minds Change: The Surprising Science of Belief, Opinion, and PersuasionYou Can Beat Your Brain: How to Turn Your Enemies Into Friends, How to Make Better Decisions, and Other Ways to Be Less DumbYou Are Not So Smart: Why You Have Too Many Friends on Facebook, Why Your Memory Is Mostly Fiction, an d 46 Other Ways You're Deluding Yourself

David McRaney is an author, science journalist, lecturer, and the creator of the blog You Are Not So Smart, which became an internationally bestselling book, later followed by You Are Now Less Dumb. He hosts the popular YANSS podcast and speaks internationally about irrational thinking and delusion. And David has a new book called “How Minds Change: The Surprising Science of Belief, Opinion, and Persuasion.” This is a big show, covering a lot of ground. He and Melanie discuss the psychology of changing minds, both our own as well as others. How to have conversations that might be difficult is part of the thread. As David said, “It's more about how you're approaching the conversation.” And he gets into the particulars of what contemporary interdisciplinary scientific research says is most effective. David's got an intriguing interdisciplinary approach, encompassing the fields of psychology, sociology, conflict, tribal psychology, and yes ... even more. As he writes in his book, “How Minds Change”: “Societies aren't fixed. Large social systems, though they seem stable, are always changing in subtle ways that are imperceptible to the people living within them. Even if thresholds remain constant in a way that prevents a cascade from building momentum within a single group, all manner of circumstances can affect the average number of connections between groups, altering the conditions in ways that randomly create percolating vulnerable clusters. Any society can, without its knowledge, change from one in which a global cascade is impossible to one in which it could happen at any time. Repeated shocks to the system that before seemed futile now have the potential to change the world. “Change can creep along with no signs of meaningful progress for decades. It makes the status quo seem like it was unanimously agreed upon, stable and eternal. It makes mind change seem impossible — until one day, a lucky strike causes so much change that everyone's thresholds are met within a percolating cluster. Then the culture-wide spread begins. A social change cascading this way reach everyone except those who have difficult-to-meet thresholds who are part of a cluster that is disconnected from the network, cult, an insulated religion, or a remote community.” Living from happiness includes many components, including psychological resilience and the ability to adapt as change happens. Especially important skills to cultivate in this rapidly accelerating era of change. David's an engaging, articulate, super-smart, and fun guy. No matter how much you try to persuade them to take harder classes, hang out with different friends or pick more lucrative extracurriculars…they tend to stick stubbornly to their own choices. It can start to feel like you're going crazy, spending hours of your life begging teens to change their minds–especially when it's over something serious like drug use or toxic relationships. This disconnect applies not only in our homes, but our society at large. Our world is more divided than ever, and it seems like there's no way to have productive conversations about what really matters. Online forums and social media have contributed immensely to this polarization, by allowing us to find people who agree with us wholeheartedly, never challenging our opinions or encouraging us to think critically. In some cases, this can lead people down rabbit holes into conspiracy theories or even cults–and it's not easy to change their minds and bring them back!So how can we start up  productive discourse and change people's minds for the better? Today I am very excited to introduce you to David McRaney, you may have heard of his first book You Are Not So Smart which is an international bestseller that is now available in 17 languages. He went on to create an awesome podcast of the same name and wrote a second book You Are Now Less Dumb. I highly recommend both of those and his podcast…and today we are talking about his new book, which just came out this week, called How Minds Change. As you will hear us talk about in the interview, this book is a fascinating journey we take along with David as he seeks to answer the question, "How do minds change?" The book is filled with interesting stories, lots of science, and fun anecdotes. I really enjoyed it and learned so much along the way, some of which you can hear about in today's episode. Join us to hear all about it! Show Notes: [00:43] Today I am very excited to introduce you to David McRaney. You may have heard of his first book You Are Not So Smart which is an international bestseller that is now available in 17 languages. He has a phenomenal podcast of the same name. [03:35] David shares about himself, his background, and how he found himself in this space.  [05:30] When his second book came out, he started a podcast. His podcast has been the centerpiece of his world for the last twelve years.  [07:55] David found something that he was interested in and wanted to find the answer to and he started to dig.  [09:01] Don't jump into anything because you are trying to get rich quickly or because it is the hot new thing.  [10:27] Don't follow the trends. Take the content you are skilled at and marry it to the thing you are obsessed with. Then plug away at it.  [13:39] Everything that you do builds a skill set that you can laterally apply to other stuff later.  [15:56] He writes his books by taking the reader along with him on the journey so they are able to learn with him.  [16:40] David shares about the cookie segment that he had on his podcast for 100 episodes. He and Melina bond over baking and business. [19:41] He started the cookie segment because of several cookie studies he read and he knew there was a way to put it into his show.  [22:26] He has gotten access to many different people in interviews for the book, podcast, and other work – how can you do the same?  [24:27] You can email anyone and at least they will tell you no, but 75% of the time people say yes.  [25:34] He explains in his emails that he is reaching out because he needs them and it would be a better show/book/project if they are part of it.  [27:33] When people realize that you genuinely care and are interested they are more likely to say yes.  [28:13] One of the biggest parts of How Minds Change is the exploration of “The Dress” and the neuroscience behind it.  [30:37] Reaching out to his connections often led to other connections and allowed him to create even more connections. [33:14] He shares about “The Dress.” The dress is an image that appeared on the internet where people could not agree on what they saw.  [35:23] With the dress, truly you saw it either one color (black and blue) or the other (white and gold) and you couldn't see it any other way.  [37:32] When we see something that is overexposed we have no choice, the brain lowers the overexposure a bit to try to help us see what the image actually is.  [39:43] Everything you experience is only happening in your brain. Every color you see is an illusion. Colors are things the brain makes.  [42:23] There are two humongous populations of human beings that have had different life experiences, and because of those different life experiences they disambiguate an ambiguous image with a different kind of disambiguation than the other side and this leads to different conclusions. [43:57] When we try to prove that we are right, we miss out on getting to the deeper truth of the matter.  [45:04] Pascal's team recreated the dress image using Crocs. They used Crocs and paired them with socks because it was an inanimate object with no default color.  [46:49] It seems like older people see white socks version because they have more experience in their lives with socks that weren't colored.  [48:28] David shares about his new book, How Minds Change. [51:41] His book is an explanation of how people do and do not change their minds, understanding the nature of the resistance, and discovering what you have to do to overcome that resistance.  [54:54] Melina shares her closing thoughts. [55:55] One of my favorite things that David said in our conversation was that you need to "listen your way into changing somebody's mind" -- it isn't about force or proving someone that they are wrong, there is so much interesting work showcased in the book about how people can actually change their own minds when they are asked the right thoughtful questions and someone takes the time to listen. Following up on my first annual "freedom" themed show, this year, I return to the book, You Are Now Less Dumb, to continue sharing about different cognitive biases we all likely have. Last year I touched on "Narrative Bias" (you are a being capable of logic and reason who falls short of that ideal in predictable ways) and "The Backfire Effect" (when your deepest convictions are challenged by contradictory evidence, your beliefs get stronger). This year I turn to "The No True Scotsman Fallacy" (you will shift your definitions to protect your ideologies) and "The Illusion of Asymmetric Insight" (you are driven to create and form groups and then believe others are wrong just because they are others). But first, I talk about "self delusion" from the introduction to the book which gives a nice overview of our general misconceptions. Why do I care about these things? Well because I fancy myself an independent thinker, but the only real way to be sure of that, if surety is even possible, is for me to look for holes in my thinking and this book does a fabulous job of helping me to see where I fall short. So, if you too want to free your mind and be truly independent, then this is the show for you! Here's my article on "unhiddenness."You can hear my accompanying playlist featuring "Dreaming" by Blondie, "Roam" by the B52's, "Freedom" by George Michael, "Holiday" by Madonna, ""Free Your Mind" by En Vogue, "Freedom" by Beyonce, "My Power" by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, and my fave "Revolution" by the Heartless Bastards, lyrics below:Where you going, my friend?Have you forgotten whenThere was a time filled with hope instead of fear that's in your heartThere was a time when life was simple and innocent to startDo you remember?Do you remember?Where you going, my friend?Have you forgotten whenThere was a time when false information wasn't so rampant in the sphereThere was a time when you weren't questioning everything you hearDo you remember?Do you remember?Constantly being advertised, your life commercialized and disguisedAs happiness in pills and potions, fancy threads and cars in motionHypnotized by gilded lies to line the pockets of so fewWhile hungry politicians feed bullshit to the massesTo ensure their statuses and further divide the classesUh-huhAnd you were born with a voice so open up and speak your mindRaise consciousness and elevate how we all relate don't hesitateNo need to be better or smarter than anybody elseLeave judgement at the door for others and yourselfThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindBig Brother's watching you and trying to sell you something newAnd I just want to take away take away the bluesBig Brother's watching you and trying to sell you something newAnd I just want to take away take away the bluesThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionWhen I get up, oh, I get up in the morningAll I really want is the truthOh, when I open my eyes and I get up in the morningAll I really need is the truthYou were born with a voice so open up and speak your mindRaise consciousness and elevate how we all relate don't hesitateNo need to be better or smarter than anybody elseLeave judgement at the door for others and yourselfThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindWhen I get up, oh, I get up in the morningAll I really want is the truthOh, when I open my eyes and I get up in the morningAll I really need is the truthRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindToday's show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston. The 4th of July stirs up lots of thoughts and feelings for me so I seek to find some answers or get clearer on the narratives that drive these thoughts and feelings. We'll dive into the Declaration of Independence, some history, a cursory overview of narrative bias and the backfire effect which is basically a biased narrative problem, and how these biases may affect how we view our history and the current events unfolding in our world today. More than ever America is divided into political tribes. One person's truth is somebody else's lie. This show is about confirmation bias and filter bubbles: How our brains play tricks on us as we try to make sense of the world. David McRaney, host of the entertaining and popular podcast, "You Are Not So Smart", is our guest. His show is "a celebration of self-delusion." David, who calls himself a psychology nerd, is passionate about the need for all of us to have some understanding of how our brains work. He is the author of two recent books: "You Are Not So Smart" and "You Are Now Less Dumb. Confirmation bias helps us separate into rival political and cultural camps. "This is the thing almost from which everything else springs, because it is the natural default way that human beings tend to make sense of the world," says David. Reframing is one of those psychological tools that just plain works. It’s practical, simple, and with practice and repetition it often leads to real change in people with a variety of thinking problems. It works because we rarely question our own interpretations, the meanings we construct when examining a set of facts, or our own introspections of internal emotional states. So much of the things the anxiety and fear we feel when anticipating the future is just the result of plucking from a grab bag of best guesses and assumptions, shaky models of reality that may or may not be accurate and will likely pan out much differently than we predict. In this episode, we meet Tom Bunn, a former commercial pilot who uses reframing to cure people of their fears of flying and Robert Morris, a startup CEO who is developing a social network to crowdsource mental health in which users reframe others people's fears and anxious thoughts and in the process learn to reframe their own fruitless cognitive loops in their daily lives. After the interview, I discuss a news story about how humanizing slot machines can encourage people to empty their pockets at casinos. In the show, you'll hear Michael elaborate on why that is. In this episode, our guests are Harvard-trained psychiatrist Michael I. Bennett and his comedy writer daughter Sarah Bennett whose new book, Fuck Feelings, makes the case for accepting the illusion of control as a guiding principle for living a better life. Time and again, study after study, psychologists have found that in situations in which the outcomes are clearly, undoubtable random or otherwise outside the realm of control, people tend to latch onto any shred of evidence that could be interpreted otherwise. It's a habit that can lead to self-loathing, ineffectual strategies for change, and lives filled with missed opportunities and squandered productivity. As the Bennetts explain in the book, most people seek a therapist in an effort to actively deny that they don't have any control over their emotions. Stuck in a neurotic, fruitless loop, people begin to wonder why they can't achieve perpetual happiness or erase their proclivity to procrastinate. If they could just fix the things they see as broken, they could then become the people they've always wanted to be and finally begin their lives. But just how much control do you really have over your feelings or your essential nature? According to the Bennetts, much less than you would like to believe. Your efforts are better spent elsewhere. In this episode, listen as Michael and Sarah explain what you should be doing instead, and why they say - "Fuck feelings." After the interview, I discuss a news story about how people can be fooled into believing a meal is delicious when told a master chef cooked the meal. Since then, I have been an editor, photographer, voiceover artist, television host, public speaker, and tornado survivor. I worked for several years as the head of digital media for WDAM-TV where I also produced The Green Couch Sessions, a TV show about the music of the Deep South. I've done some commercial work too. I've written for Heineken, Duck Tape, and a few others. I recently appeared in a Reebok ad that I also helped write.  I am married to Amanda McRaney, who is my favorite person, and I live in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.   My cat's name is Simon.

The very fact that you are reading this sentence, contemplating whether you want to listen to this podcast, means that you are living out a fantasy from a previous generation's cyberpunk novel. However you made it here, however you got these words into your brain, you did so by diving through data streams first cooked up by delirious engineers downing late-night coffees, wandering deep within rows of data tape unspooling from jerky, spinning platters. We've been dreaming of this life for a long time, since before the vacuum tubes and punchcards of the '40s, and now that we are here, some people are worried that the tech will, at best, make us lazy, and at worst make us stupid. Is all this new technology improving our thinking or dampening it? Are all these new communication tools turning us into navel-gazing human/brand hybrids, or are we developing a new set of senses that allow us to benefit from never severing contact with the people most important to us? That's the topic of this episode of the You Are Not So Smart Podcast, and to answer these questions we welcome this episode's guest, Clive Thompson, who is the author of Smarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better. As the title suggests, he disagrees with the naysayers, and his book is an impressive investigation into why they are probably (thankfully) wrong. Thompson is a journalist whose work can be found published in Wired, The Washington Post, and the New York Times Magazine. You can learn more about him at his website, CollisionDetection.Net. Why do human beings experience jealousy, what is its function, and what are the warning signs that signal this powerful emotion may lead to violence? Once reserved for the contemplation of poets and playwrights, jealousy is now the subject of intense scientific scrutiny. "Mate poachers abound," explains this week's guest, psychologist David Buss, who says that his research supports his hypothesis that human jealousy is an adaptation forged by evolutionary forces to deal with the problems of infidelity. Moderate jealousy, he says, is healthy and signals commitment, but there is a dark and corrosive side as well that follows a clear, predictable pattern before it destroys lives. David Buss is a professor of psychology who studies human mating at The University of Texas at Austin. He his the author of The Evolution Of Desire: Strategies Of Human Mating, Dangerous Passion: Why Jealousy Is As Necessary As Love and Sex, The Murderer Next Door: Why the Mind Is Designed to Kill, and Why Women Have Sex: Understanding Sexual Motivations from Adventure to Revenge. You can learn more about him and his work at DavidBuss.com. After the interview I discuss a news story about research into societies in which women are more competitive than men. In every episode, before I read a bit of self delusion news, I taste a cookie baked from a recipe sent in by a listener/reader. That listener/reader wins a signed copy of my new book, “You Are Now Less Dumb,” and I post the recipe on the YANSS Pinterest page. This episode’s winner is Fernando Cordeiro who submitted a recipe for chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches. Send your own recipes to david {at} youarenotsosmart.com.
