Power of Your Mind Podcast Interview with Tom Bunn – Panic Free Pandemic Workbook: Exercises To Calm Pandemic-Related Fear, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia   In Episode #105, I am talking with Tom Bunn.   A licensed therapist and retired airline captain. He has worked for fearful fliers for over 35 years, and in that time, developed an effective way to keep his clients from having a panic attack on the plane. Studies have shown over 80% of his clients become completely free of panic when flying. As a side effect, they become free of panic on the ground as well. This was important because the therapy most often used from panic, CBT, ends panic in only 16% of clients treated with it. That led him to write Panic Free: The 10-Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia. This book focused to ending panic in elevators, on bridges, in tunnels, high places, and MRIs. Recently, he supplemented that book with a workbook aimed specifically at pandemic-related issues. Today, Tom  is going to share some of his insights on How to Calm Pandemic-Related Fear, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia We talked about: How this workbook got started and why he decided to write it. Why anxiety is so difficult for some to handle and not so difficult for others. What it is about this pandemic that has made it hard for people to keep their emotional balance. How we all have a calming system and some of us have the mental software to operate it and some of us don't. Where that mental software comes from. If we didn't get the mental software during formative years, how we get it now. Free Offer: Tom has a free group counseling every Wednesday night on Zoom. It is at 10 PM Eastern time. You’ll discover in this episode how oxytocin can stop panic from developing, and how to engage the parasympathetic nervous system to put the brakes on a runaway fear reaction. Other things we talked about included: Why panic is so distressing What is missing from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for some individuals with panic How Tom developed his treatment approach for panic The types of memories that can trigger oxytocin release Stephen Porges’s research on the social engagement system and Polyvagal Theory The important of the quality of another person’s voice in activating the calming response (see this previous episode with YogaVoice creator Mark Moliterno) How Tom transitioned from being a pilot to being a therapist Why knowing the safety facts doesn’t eliminate fear of flying The limitations of relying on what is conscious when treating panic The importance of quieting the hyperarousal “alarm” in order to deal effectively with panic Linking panic-related situations to memories of social engagement to activate the calming system The imperative of practicing the techniques Tom recommends The function of a “safety person” in panic disorder The importance of picking the right person to provide the appropriate calming response The limits of control in panic The problem with emotional reasoning (that feeling unsafe means you’re in danger) “Psychic equivalence”: not being able to distinguish between one’s fears and reality The kind of meditation that can be most useful in managing panic Training the brain such that fear triggers calming rather than more arousal Toward the end of the episode I noted the overlap between Tom's approach and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), developed by Dr. Steven Hayes. Here's more background on what ACT is and how it works. In this episode, I interview Captain Tom Bunn, airline pilot turned social worker!   As you may know, I used to have panic attacks AND I couldn’t fly on an airplane without my husband. During a flight I’d either need to be medicated OR I’d be white knuckling a meditation the whole time. That’s changed for me now because of A Course in Miracles (ACIM). I’m still shocked at how my fears of flying have fallen away.   Tom’s approach to ending panic in ALL situations (not just flying) is based on legitimate scientific research and my hope is that his approach could help clear out any panic you’re having so you can continue to dive deep into ACIM and be the miracle worker that you are.    Tom Bunn, LCSW, is the author of Panic Free: The 10-Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia, which is the result of his many years addressing flight panic in his role as an airline pilot. Tom Bunn has just released Panic Free: The 10-Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia. Panic and its close cousins’ anxiety and claustrophobia have long been problems without reliable solutions. In most cases, the estimated six million Americans who suffer from a panic disorder receive only marginal relief from psychotherapy ( usually cognitive behavioral therapy), medication, or the two combined. After years of working to help suffers, licensed therapist and author Tom Bunn discovered a highly effective solution that utilizes a part of the brain not affected by the stress hormones that bombard a person experiencing panic. This “unconscious procedural memory” can be programmed to control panic by preventing the release of stress hormones and activating the parasympathetic nervous system.  It sounds complicated but is not, requiring just 10 days and no drugs or doctors. We talk about How stress hormones affect anxietyHow to link the stressor to a calming imageAgoraphobia and panic attacksHow relationships affect our stress and panic levelsCommon symptoms of panicHow to fly panic freeHow to redirect anxiety-producing thoughtsWhy drugs do not work long termHow imagined danger can cause panic more than a real dangerThe most important thing a person in the midst of panic needs to knowHow oxytocin works with panic Panic Free offers readers a step-by-step solution for training the brain to stop panic before it starts.   In parts 1–3 of the book, Bunn explains the physiological and psychological mechanisms that lead to panic. Then, in part 4, he leads the reader step by step through a ten-day program to establish automatic control of panic, so they can learn to put the frustration, worry, and distress of panic and claustrophobia behind them, both in the air and on the ground. Tom Bunn, LCSW, is the author if Panic Free: The 10 Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia, which is the result of his many years addressing flight panic in his role as an airline pilot. This utilizes a part of the brain that is not flooded with the stress hormones that bombards a person experiencing panic. In the second half hour, Patricia interviews Mark Coleman, author of From Suffering to Peace, Make Peace with Your Mind, and Awake in the Wild. He has guided students as a corporate consultant, counselor, meditation teacher, and wilderness guide. He will discuss the inner critic, which is the voice inside our heads reminding us that we are never “good enough”, and how to understand the process.

PANIC FREE: New Book Offers a 10-Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia Show Guest: Tom Bunn According to Tom Bunn, author of Panic Free, this condition and its close cousins anxiety and claustrophobia have long been problems without reliable solutions. In most cases, the estimated six million Americans who suffer with a panic disorder receive only marginal relief from psychotherapy (usually cognitive behavioral therapy), medication, or the two combined. Panic Free claims the solution to panic is to train your unconscious procedural memory, located in the subcortex, to calm you automatically, by repeating the exercises in this book. It also includes specific instructions for dealing with common panic triggers such as MRIs, bridges, airplane travel, and tunnels. Because panic is a profoundly life-limiting problem, the program Bunn offers promises to be a real life-changer.

Yet, my guest, Tom Bunn, has succeeded in controlling panic and claustrophobia in every client with whom he has used this program. 100% success is hard to achieve in anything, especially something that has previously been treated with limited success. The drugs are highly addictive, and only mildly successful even when combined with the supposed gold standard treatment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT is only successful with one out of seven people. Tom's program works without drugs or doctors because by doing the specified exercises, your brain learns to respond without panic when you are in a stressful situation. There are even additional trainings for specific situations like: MRI's, bridges, airplane travel, and tunnels. Summary: In this episode I talk to Captain Tom Bunn about how he has helped people to be less anxious when flying. Captain Tom Bunn, a retired airline captain and licensed therapist, is founder of SOAR, Inc.He has helped over 7,000 people overcome difficulty with flying. His book, "SOAR: The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying" was chosen Amazon editors' 2014 favorite book. Captain Bunn was part of the first fear of flying program, which was started at Pan Am in 1975 by Captain Truman Cummings. Though the Pan Am course was helpful for many, it did not help those subject to claustrophobia or to panic. He founded SOAR in 1982 to offer more effective help, and develop a therapy that has made it possible for everyone to fly. In this particular episode you will learn: - How linking flying to memories can be beneficial - How oxytocin can be useful to quieten the amygdala - What the vagus nerve does - How you can think of a calm friend to keep us grounded - When we make a decision we chill out because the amygdala stops sending stress hormones - When we are in control we are OK - This is why choosing to embrace Anxiety is so important because we are empowering ourselves - How you can tap into a "flow state" - How alcohol and medication can affect us when flying Captain Tom's Top 10 Tips: Tip Number One - The 5-4-3-2-1 Exercise This is nothing more than a focusing exercise, something to intensely occupy your mind so disturbing thoughts can't take hold. Prove to yourself that you have the means to control anticipatory anxiety. Start by doing the 5-4-3-2-1 every fifteen minutes. Then every hour. Then, whenever you feel the need. If you are not troubled by panic, this exercise can (though it is a lot of work) get you through a flight. If you suffer from panic, you will need one of the SOAR courses to establish control that works automatically. Sit or recline comfortably. Focus on some object in front of you. Keep your focus on that throughout the exercise. (If you eyes drift off, just bring them back.) Do it out loud first. Then, try it silently. See if one works better for you than the other. Say "I see" and name something in your peripheral vision. Say "I see" and name something else in your peripheral vision. Continue until you have made five statements. For example: I see the lamp, I see the table, I see a spot on the lamp shade, I see a book on the table, I see a picture on the table.

Reframing is one of those psychological tools that just plain works. It’s practical, simple, and with practice and repetition it often leads to real change in people with a variety of thinking problems. It works because we rarely question our own interpretations, the meanings we construct when examining a set of facts, or our own introspections of internal emotional states. So much of the things the anxiety and fear we feel when anticipating the future is just the result of plucking from a grab bag of best guesses and assumptions, shaky models of reality that may or may not be accurate and will likely pan out much differently than we predict. In this episode, we meet Tom Bunn, a former commercial pilot who uses reframing to cure people of their fears of flying and Robert Morris, a startup CEO who is developing a social network to crowdsource mental health in which users reframe others people's fears and anxious thoughts and in the process learn to reframe their own fruitless cognitive loops in their daily lives. After the interview, I discuss a news story about how humanizing slot machines can encourage people to empty their pockets at casinos. In every episode, after I read a bit of self delusion news, I taste a cookie baked from a recipe sent in by a listener/reader. That listener/reader wins a signed copy of my new book, “You Are Now Less Dumb,” and I post the recipe on the YANSS Pinterest page.
