Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Duane Betts joins me on the show today. Duane is the son of the innovative guitarist and songwriter from the Allman Brothers Band, Dickey Betts, and while he's certainly a chip off the ol' block, Duane has his own thing going on and has finally just released his debut solo album “Wild & Precious Life”. It's an inspired and engaging record - sort of a modern take on southern rock that's unique and definitely has some of the Betts family sound but it's also a great display of a killer band in fine form. Before he was writing and singing his own songs, Duane was a guitar slinger for hire and spent some time in the band Dawes, played with Phil Lesh and Friends, Dickey's band Great Southern, and has had other bands like Backbone69 as well as a band with a few of the other Allman Bros offspring, including Berry Oakley Jr and Devon Allman - called The Allman Betts Band. After those various projects ran their course, it left Duane the time to focus on writing his own music, and after a casual conversation with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, he was offered their studio to record these new songs in. I saw Duane recently at the Grand Ol' Opry and he and his band did a killer mini-set there. They're going to be out playing all over the place in the coming months, so make sure you go and see them live and pick up the new album. We had a great conversation about all of this stuff and got deep into the process of recording his new album, guitar tones, his history with his own band and the legacy of the Allman Brothers. You can get info on all of Duane's projects and his tour dates at duanebetts.com - Please enjoy my conversation with Duane Betts!Be sure to listen to the Accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. New York Times best-selling author Alan Paul is this episode's guest to talk about his new book Brothers and Sisters: The Allman Brothers Band and the Inside Story of the Album That Defined the ‘70s. Brothers and Sisters is the Allman Brothers Band's most successful album, selling over seven million copies. Its influence, both musically and culturally, continues to be felt today. I ask Alan about what's in the book, including his personal interviews with members of the band and the previously unheard interviews conducted by Allman Brothers Band archivist, photographer, and “Tour Mystic” Kirk West. We also get into the backstories to Allman Bros. classics like "Ramlin' Man", "Southbound", and "Jessica". Alan also reveals how the Allman Brothers came to the aid of Jimmy Carter's failing presidential campaign, contributing to his election. Plus, we get into how Brothers and Sisters caused rifts within the band; and how their work inspired a new Southern rock genre. Alan is also the author of the phenomenal 2014 book One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band. It was the product of 25 years of reporting on the band, and was hailed by Rolling Stone as a "thorough account" and by Guitar World as "definitive". Where's the best seat in the venue? Is it in the upper deck so you can see the full stage show? What about straight back by the soundboard so you can hear the best? Or is it the front row so you can be as close to the action as possible? The front row is an elusive spot. It takes big bucks or intense dedication to earn. No one just "walks up" to the front row. There has to be intentionality. For the Allman Brothers Band, I gave it everything I had, even arriving at the venue before security, and it paid off. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Aris Paul! You'd be hard-pressed to find another band that embodies Pittsburgh Rock and Southside Blues like APB...Aris, Aaron, and Matt refer to what they do as  "red-eyed, road rock" - and that's accurate. It's a culmination of fierce guitar, moving bass lines, and remarkably technical drumming that evoke bands of yesteryear while throwing in some jam-ish nuances. Their music has the gypsy soul of the Allman Bros., the blues swagger of Freddie King, the rowdy rock 'n' roll of the Stones, and the heavy metal roar of Hendrix and Sabbath. Spanning funk to country, hard rock to blues, APB puts on a rock show that has opened them up to the national spotlight and allowed them to tour the country and work alongside the likes of the Way-Down Wanderers, Joanna Shaw Taylor, Eric Sommers, Joshua Davis, Ally Venable, Raelyn Nelson (Willie Nelson's granddaughter), and many, many more.

It was an honor to talk with Mitch and have him share about his career, his compositions and music, and experiences working with so many great artists. Be sure to visit his website and see his full bio and more at: https://mitchstein.com/home Mitch Stein Guitarist/Composer The show had already started and the sound came rushing up the stairs to meet me as I made my way to the basement of the Izzy Bar that night in '97. The sound, like Led Zeppelin on overdrive wearing a Stetson and armed with 21st Century calculus, made my hair stand on end. I'd been told by those who know that The Hermanators were probably the best band in the city and that their leader, Mitch Stein, was a New York guitar legend. Sure enough the room was packed, full of some of the finest improvising musicians anywhere, devoted fans and even a contingent of the ‘beautiful people’. Over the course of the set they played with energetic hyper funk, raucous raging rock, hymnal beauty, twisted country and bemused blues underpinned by advanced harmony and intricate grooves all the while displaying incredible empathy between each other and a healthy dose of humor. I’d been Hermanated! Mitch "Moose" Stein is a genuine NY guitar hero, born and raised in the mythic Gotham. Both his parents were musicians (mother a classical pianist and father a jazz trumpeter) but the first music that hooked him while still in kindergarten was"Meet the Beatles". The young Stein, drawn to the rhythm of rock 'n roll, started off on drums before switching to the guitar in the 6th grade. Shortly after, he started lessons with renowned studio musician Allen Hanlon whom Mitch says "kicked my ass and made me take the guitar seriously!" As a teenager Moose loved listening to bands that stretched out and jammed a la The Allman Bros and then one day, while still a senior in high-school, a friend played him Coltrane. It was "My Favorite Things"live at Newport and "it turned my head around! They were jamming but on a whole different planet!"Coltrane had opened up a whole new world for the nascent musician who subsequently found a great jazz teacher in Rich Boukas and immediately started soaking up as much jazz history as he could.

LISTEN: JUMP ON A MOON BEAM AND RIDE! Captain Beyond - S/T (1972) is the deserted island album pick for both of your resident riffsters, and the 35-minute riffstravaganza has brought an unfathomable amount of joy to us since we first heard it. An undeniable classic but at the same time sadly forgotten by time, sloppy management and bad luck - at the moment the album is not available on any streaming service..! So our goal with this New Years Special is to play every riff on the album and make an introduction to this mystery super-group featuring Rod Evans (vocals, ex-Deep Purple), Bobby Caldwell (ex-Johnny Winter, ex-Armageddon ex-Allman Bros), Rhino (ex-Iron Butterfly, ex-Rhinosaurus, ex-Allman Bros) and Lee Dorman (ex-Iron Butterfly). Just like the album, this episode should be experienced as one unit, the imploding center of a dying star, the penultimate accomplishment in 70's riffdom,. In Lucky Episode 13 we revisit the scene of the crime in Jessup, Georgia, where Academy Award (c) Winning actor William Hurt was portraying rocker Greg Allman in the highly anticipated biopic MIDNIGHT RIDER, which died prematurely like the Allman Brothers themselves, and taking with it a bright young camera assistant named SARAH JONES.  The aftermath changed the way safety and responsibility is judged on films and fostered the first-ever jail term for a filmmaker.  The haunted project has just risen again as the director--barred from directing ever again-- recently surfaced overseas helming a film in Europe.  And the last conversations of the late Ms. Jones and her father the night before her last day on earth; the first day of the shoot, have just been revealed in a poignant and cryptic love note from the grave. Have you ever written a complaint letter or criticized someone in a newsletter?  Probably...  Have you ever ordered or sold on eBAY?  Probably.... Have you ever had six people from the object of that letter threaten to kill you, send horrible things to you, doxx you, and cyberstalk you with the intent '...to bring you down?'  Probably not, and probably not from one of the biggest companies in the world: eBAY.  An amazing true crime story that is stranger than fiction that terrorized a couple from Natick, Massachusetts. Okay, no more changing rooms at the department stores.  How does that sound?  No queueing.  No smelly, poorly lit tiny little Guantanamo Bay spaces.   Not even the posh, liquor-fuelled high-end fashion shop dressing rooms either.   You now scan the bar code of the clothing you like, and your phone mines all your Insta and other social media pix and 'dresses you' in the clothes you just scanned so you can really 'see' how you will look in them.  Mind-numbing technology via AMAZON, from one of the most innovative geniuses and questionable human beings on the planet, coming to you far too soon... Have you reverted to your old self too much this week?  Are you haunted by old images, old flames, old behaviours you thought you'd shed like water off a duck's back that have now returned to second-guess yourself?  It's the era of the SHADOW SELF... Blame Mars...in Aries...till the end of 2020. LADIES DAY:  Fashion goes to the Podcaster's Wife this week... it's Double-MONCLER + GUCCI...while I sit around like an Emperor with no clothes.   But Ladies aren't allowed as members in my Men's Club.  Find out why this is a good thing! Hugh Jackman got old.  Yep, baby-face is gone.  But like Penfold's Grange it's a good thing.  And like a secret camera in a therapist's office we see him bare his soul in BAD EDUCATION and why it's such an epic film, and his best turn since his unbelievably overlooked tour-de-force in THE PRESTIGE. You don't know about it, and it cost like 10 cents to make by movie standards these days, but Amazon Prime's THE VAST OF NIGHT is your Easter Egg treasure for the mid-year mark.  Accidentally stumbled upon from a great tout from the always reliable and insightful Scott Feinberg at The Hollywood Reporter, this film is a sci-fi / thermal horror treat. You think you know tasty stuff but trust me, you don't.  Because unless you've had WARATAH BAY ICE CREAM, you're thinking Lefty sociopath duplicitous faux hippie sell-outs like Ben & Jerry make great ice cream.  They make good ice cream in a failed State.  Volvo makes good cars.  But Waratah Bay is... (Gulp) possibly the best boutique ice cream brand in the whole Universe and it's only available in a few stores in towns the size of postage stamps in Victoria.  It's the Ferrari 250 GTO of ice cream, and it needs some new roads to hoe.  I reveal the crack cocaine of ice cream and something to take your mind off riots, looting, cancel culture, #BLM, and the end of the world as we know it.   #SteveRosendaleArtist #BadEducation #ColonialBrewing #cancelCulture #Moncler #Gucci #Amazon #JeffBezos #TheTelegraph #SteveBird #Th...

My guest today is Mr. Audley Freed. As with most of my guests on Riff Raff it kinda goes without saying that Audley is a badass player and his credits most certainly back this up but if there was an also award for “most humble guitar player” Audley would most certainly win it hands down. Never one to brag or name drop, he is instead constantly downplaying his achievements but not in a false way at all, rather a genuinely modest way. You get the feeling that coming from a small town in North Carolina, Audley is grateful for the opportunities that he has had and never even thought he'd have the amazing career that he's enjoyed but deserved.  Hailing from humble roots in North Carolina and forming the band Cry of Love (which still has legions of faithful fans) to joining the Black Crowes (and recording the legendary Live at the Greek with Jimmy Page), to his current gig with Sheryl Crow, Audley has done just about every cool gig you can imagine- Peter Frampton, Joe Perry,  Dixie Chicks, Jakob Dylan, songwriting with Train, recording the debut record with Gavin DeGraw, jamming with the Allman Bros., and performing with other artists like Lucinda Williams, Bob Weir, and many others.  I had the opportunity to play for a short time in a band called Blue Floyd with Audley and that's where we really hit it off. If you know Audley like I know him you get the idea that he prefers to not too do many interviews or podcasts but he graciously agreed to sit with me and shoot the bull for a while.  On a cold Feb day in Nashville I head over to Audley's house and after he making us a couple of strong cups of coffee and looking through his killer vinyl collection we get down to business. In this interview you'll hear about Audley's beginnings, his guitar “mentor” (Ernie Johnson) that really opened his mind up to being a professional musician, the early years of Cry of Love and how he wrote the song "Peace Pipe" at a guitar shop in N.C. one day, how to play "Highway Jones", to auditioning and joining the Black Crowes, some amazing Jimmy Page stories, his current amp choices, advice for backing up singers, his influences and so much more.  Recorded at Audley's house, Nashville, TN.,  Feb. 2018Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Guided by Geoff Bywater - a music supervisor at FOX, the band was barely playing live shows locally when they were signed to a publishing deal with Warner-Chappell and then to a record deal with Sony/Columbia. The band toured and released one self-titled album that was a fresh take on the warm, fluid songs inspired by Jim Croce, The Allman Bros, The Black Crowes, and many other classic rock bands and songwriters of the 70‘s. When the group eventually disbanded, Hans Eberbach moved to Los Angeles, spending his time submitting music for TV and film eventually returning to Sacramento in the 2000’s. He has since released a solo album, Up Is The Only Way Out (2010)  He has toured and released an album, “So Much Trouble” (2011) with The Nibblers, a soul soaked Sacramento based funk and R&B band. He now sings for Joy&Madness, an evolution of that vintage soul sound with modern classic pop sensibilities. The band has released two EP's The EP#1 (2014) Little Bright World(2015)

Shortly afterwards, it was confirmed that Warren Haynes would also be departing. Both musicians have highly successful touring bands independent of the Brothers, with Trucks winning a Grammy in 2012. Trucks and Haynes were both influential lead guitarists with The Allman Brothers. Trucks, a former child prodigy and now the driving guitarist behind the Grammy-winning Tedeschi Trucks Band, has been with the Brothers for 15 years, since he was twenty. Haynes, the roaring guitar genius behind Gov’t Mule, has been with the band since 1989. The move comes shortly after (incorrect) news from a Rolling Stone Magazine article, from a statement by Gregg Allman, that longtime bassist Oteil Burbridge would be leaving the band. Burbridge and Butch Trucks adamantly denied the rumors, which appear to have simply been a matter of miscommunication. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2014/01/influential-guitarists-leaving-allman-brothers-band-in-2015/ Last piece of news this week: From Brian MacDonald-Grammy-winning International superstar singer Jack Jones-fresh off his appearance in "American Hustle"-is recording a new CD (produced by Grammy/Oscar legend Rick Jarrard), and has picked one of Brian’s songs as the first single... recording started yesterday, and it should be out before the Oscars. Visit the Blues Foundation, the Delta Blues Museum, and listen to the DBM's top-notch (and free) podcast, Uncensored History of the Blues, for more information about the blues. Please note: If this is your first visit to Murphy's Saloon, you can skip the first 10-12 episodes, which you may find are of sub-par quality. If you decide to listen, just know that while the music is great, my voice may seem muffled in many of those shows. Murphy's Saloon #4 Show Notes: • Almost Heaven by Tommy Z. Tommy infuses his songs with a mix of jazz, R&B, rock and funk, tinged with spirituality. His latest CD, Universal Love, was produced by Nick Blagona (Bee Gees, Nazareth, Moody Blues, Deep Purple, Rainbow, The Police, Chicago) He also appears on a recently released solo album Gillan's Inn by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple. Tommy's personal Web site (where you can buy his CD) is here. • Talk Is Cheap by The Shades of Gray. The Shades of Gray are four young guys out of Salt Lake City who've been playing together for 2 years. They list Herbie Hancock, the Allman Bros. and Jimi Hendrix as influences. The band's site is here. • Your Heart by Anne Heaton. Heaton has been based out of New York in recent years, but is considering a move back to Chicago, her home town. She was an opening act on Jewel's Spring 2005 tour, and lists Fine Young Cannibals, Peter Gabriel, Tom Petty, 10,000 Maniacs and the Indigo Girls as influences. Heaton's debut album, Black Notebook, was chosen by Performing Songwriter magazine as one of its Top 12 Independent Releases. All three of her independent release are available at her site. • Take Your Shoes Off by Janet Ryan and Straight Up!. As Murphy's Saloon listeners may remember, I found Janet Ryan and Straight Up! over at GarageBand.com. This is their second appearance at Murphy's Saloon. After I played them the first time, they added my logo and a link to Murphy's Saloon at their site. Thanks, guys! • Three Chords by (The Rev.) Jimmie Bratcher. Bratcher is another return visitor to Murphy's Saloon. Although he sorta downplays the fact he's a Rev., Bratcher uses music to help reach people, and it's absolutely killer blues. His personal site is here. • Church of the Electric Soul by the Robert Farrell Farrell, a resident of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, has been playing guitar since he was five years old (he's now in his 30s), and has been described by Billboard Magazine as "arguably the greatest undiscovered guitarist in Canada." Among his kudos, Farrell's got three New Artist Radio (N.A.R.) Awards: for "Musician of the Year" (2002 and 2003) and "Male Rock Artist of the Year" (2002). I'd suggest visiting his site and doing your part (by buying his CDs) to lift the public profile of this superlative guitarist. • And, as usual, the Murphy's Saloon intro is from Rocket Science by Brain Buckit, and the show outro is from Play This by Dave at the Chub Creek Podcast. (Music in this week's show courtesy of the PodSafe Music Network, except where noted.)
