By any description, Randall Bramblett can claim a varied career. Aside from the fact that he's released no fewer than 15 solo albums, as a solo artist, he's also been a much in-demand session player, having worked with Gregg Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Robbie Robertson, Elvin Bishop, Steve Winwood, Widespread Panic, and any number of others. That's hardly surprising considering the fact that he's a multi-instrumentalist who's adept on keyboards, saxophones, flute, guitar, mandolin, and harmonica.Bramblett's career dates back to the early ‘70s when he played a major role in the band Sea Level, a jazzy spin-off from the Allman Brothers Band. In the years since, he's continued to pursue a decidedly varied array of genres, including rock, jazz, blues and R&B. With his new album, Paradise Breakdown, he shares a similar set of sounds, making it an ideal showcase for his verve and versatility. Born in Jesup, Georgia, United States, Bramblett studied religion and psychology at the University of North Carolina, with the objective of entering the seminary. However, finding inspiration in the music of James Taylor, Carole King, and Bob Dylan, he abandoned his theological studies and pursued songwriting, soon moving to Athens, Georgia.After establishing himself as a session musician in the early 1970s, recording with artists like Gregg Allman and Elvin Bishop, Bramblett toured with bands such as the Gregg Allman Band, Sea Level, Widespread Panic, and Traffic. Bramblett, along with Chuck Leavell, has been credited with giving Sea Level, described as "a jazz-influenced spinoff from the Allman Brothers Band," a new, unique direction. Bramblett has been described as an outstanding lyricist and vocalist. The songs he wrote during his time with Sea Level have been described as "philosophical, despairing soul and funk tunes and rockers.As of 2017, Bramblett has recorded a total of fourteen albums, with the first two, That Other Mile and Light of the Night, issued by Polydor in the 1975 and 1976, and multiple albums in each succeeding decade. Bramblett's 2001 album, No More Mr. Lucky, features Bramblett playing the Hammond B-3 and saxes. Tracks on that album has been described as rich, funky, hip, and raw.In 2015, Bramblett released Devil Music. The title track was inspired by the story of Howlin' Wolf trying to reunite with his estranged mother, who had abandoned him for "playing the devil's music

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Randall BramblettWhen singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Randall Bramblett began compiling the songs that would eventually make up his 12th and newest studio album, Pine Needle Fire, it wasn’t with any particular musical or lyrical direction in mind. But viewed through the lens of the dozen tracks on the now completed set, it’s apparent there was a theme there all along.“I recognize a thread about time passing, or at least grappling with the realization that you don’t have an infinite amount of time left like you think you do when you're young,” says Bramblett, who in addition to his solo work has over the course of his illustrious 40-plus-year career recorded, performed and composed alongside rock luminaries like Steve Winwood, the Allman Brothers, the Band’s Levon Helm, Bonnie Raitt, Marc Cohen, Widespread Panic and many others. “So there's that mortality part of it. And then another part has to do with our current situation in this country. I grew up protesting in the ‘60s and ‘70s, so I’ve always felt connected to politics. Now I'm really hung up on it. And you look around and there’s a lot of people that are kind of desperate for change and for justice…or maybe they’re just desperate. They’re trying to hang on in this world. I’m one of them. Episode 149: Randall Bramblett is a powerhouse journeyman and veteran of southern roots and soul music, with a dense and deep resume working for others, from the Allman Brothers to Widespread Panic. But between his stints as a sax player, keyboardist, singer and songwriter he's released more than ten albums as an artist, and his fans know them to be a blend of sharp writing, a sensuous voice and spicy beats and ambience. The newest is Pine Needle Fire on New West Records, Bramblett's loyal home since 2001. Also in the hour, a visit with Nashville's Brennen Leigh about her nostalgic thematic album Prairie Love Letter.

Then Turner explains who Denny Walley is and describes his own efforts to procure this interview backstage at Hampton70. Denny talks about his Colonel memories, including the fact that while he was in a band called The Detours, he was at one point in the same room with Colonel Bruce Hampton, but the two would not meet until many years later. Denny talks about going to a desert high school with Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and James "Motorhead" Sherwood, and how Motor recommended Denny to Zappa, and the strange way Walley endeared himself to FZ which would ultimately land him on Zappa's "Bongo Fury" Tour. Denny also discusses Capt. Beefheart's unusual creative process, and how a guy named John French was key to its success. He also tells about how he and Motorhead blew their side project's chance at a major record deal because they pre-crashed an Elton John party in hilarious fashion. Rob shares a story about how he blew his one chance to meet Zappa and then we return to backstage at Atlanta's Fox Theater for the full chat with Widespread Panic's John Bell. Bell talks extensively about Col. Bruce Hampton and shares a few legendary Bruce stories. Bell also reveals that he is considerably less enthusiastic about seeing concerts himself these days than he had been not too long ago. He apparently even has to be careful not to lose himself in the music of his opening acts. Rob responds to Bell's point about Colonel giving him the inspiration to be himself on stage by asking about Bell's improvised raps, and Bell reluctantly discusses this unique talent, eventually identifying Van Morrison's as his chief influence (leading Turner to suggest that WsP cover Morrison's "Real Real Gone" with Randall Bramblett and the MegaBlasters). Bell also explains how lineup changes have invigorated Widespread Panic over the years, and specifically speaks to how they worked keyboardist JoJo Hermann's clavinet into their sound in the 90s. “Juke Joint at the Edge of the World” is the eleventh album by the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and it’s musical grit and funky tunes make it one of his best.

Rob and Seth sit down with Randall Bramblett in his own house and after first discussing his two most recent brilliant releases "Juke Joint at the Edge of the World" and "Devil Music," they go back to the 70s and move through his fascinating career. We learn how working with Tommy Talton and the band Cowboy led to him meeting and ultimately touring with Gregg Allman. He speaks of his days with the "jazz arm" of the Allman Brothers Band community, Sea Level. Bramblett also speaks of working with Levon Helm, and meeting and touring with Steve Winwood. His success with Winwood would unfold into him being a vital part of the enormously successful 1994 Traffic reunion tour, and we get some insight into that Bramblett era. Widespread Panic fans might be curious to learn about how Randall ended up in that family, and what it was like to tour with them while their guitarist's health was rapidly declining. We also get a follow-up call in the outtro during which Randall speaks about his most recent Atlanta play (it was a DOOZIE) and he reflects on his friends who have recently passed - Col. Bruce Hampton, Gregg Allman and Jimmy Nalls. PanicStream user Col. Braddock asked for a request that I will not be playing, at least not this week. It occurred to me that his suggestion would make much better fodder for a future themed cast.... but there were some songs from the same show featuring the same guest that would be worth a listen. As I revisited the famous Jorma performance from 2000 I also ran across a relatively recent download of Vic Chesnutt and became inspired. Guests and covers of songs by friends.So away I went, finding a killer FM broadcast that I was not acquainted with featuring some priceless interview tom-foolery by the band.
