INXS (a phonetic play on "in excess") were an Australian rock band, formed as the Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales. The founding members were bassist Garry Gary Beers, main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, lead singer and main lyricist Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly. For 20 years, INXS was fronted by Hutchence, whose magnetic stage presence made him the focal point of the band. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements.In 1984, INXS had their first number-one hit in Australia with "Original Sin". The band achieved international success in the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s with the hit albums Listen Like Thieves, Kick, and X, and the singles "What You Need", "Need You Tonight" (the band's only US number-one single), "Devil Inside", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Suicide Blonde" and "New Sensation". After Hutchence's death on 22 November 1997, INXS made appearances with several guest singers, and toured and recorded with Jon Stevens as lead singer, beginning in 2000. In 2005, members of INXS participated in Rock Star: INXS, a reality television series that culminated in the selection of Canadian J.D. Fortune as their new lead singer. Irish singer-songwriter Ciaran Gribbin replaced Fortune as lead singer in 2011. During a concert on 11 November 2012, INXS stated that the performance would be their last, although they did not announce the band's permanent retirement. Joining me today is Jon Farriss. Since 1977 Jon has been the drummer with Austrailian rock/pop icons INXS, along with his brothers Andrew and Tim Farriss, Gary Garry Beers, Kirk Pengilly and of lead singer and main lyricist, the late great Michael Hutchence they created an incredible back catalogue of catchy funk tinged rock/pop songs with amazing hooks and bundles of energy, including songs such as Need You Tonight, Never Tear Us Apart, New Sensation, Mystify, Kick, Suicide Blonde and many more. Join Jon and myself for a very rare interview about his remarkable career, we talk about many things including how his signature drumming style and sound has influenced so many drummers around the world, Jon tells us how Mick Jagger actually told him that INXS had influenced the Rolling Stones for a track on the Steel Wheels album! We also talk about how Jon started using electronics alongside his traditional drum kit and how the band got slated by some music journalists for doing so! Unbestritten im Mittelpunkt der Band stand der Sänger Michael Hutchence. Im Gespräch mit Ocke Bandixen beschreibt Peter Urban Michael Hutchence als nahezu idealen Frontmann der Band: attraktiv, charismatisch und mit einer variablen und kraftvollen Stimme ausgestattet. Er zog die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich, die Lieder über Beziehungen, Begehren und Einsamkeit bekamen durch ihn Klasse, Tiefe und Ausdruck. Die außergewöhnliche Ausstrahlung des Sängers erlebte Peter Urban bei einem persönlichen Treffen in Hamburg, von dem er im Podcast erzählt. Die Band war bereits Ende der 70er von Michael Hutchence, den drei Fariss-Brüdern und einigen Freunden gegründet worden. 1987 schlug sie ein - zwischen Plastikpop und alten Rockern - mit dem Album „Kick“ und den Hits „Need you tonight“, „Devil inside“, „New Sensation“ oder “Mystify”. Tourneen durch große Hallen gipfelten in einem Auftritt im Wembley Stadion vor 72 000 Menschen. 1992 kam es in Dänemark, an der Seite von der von dort stammenden Helena Christensen zu einem folgenschweren Unfall. Bei einer Schlägerei mit einem Taxifahrer fiel Michael Hutchence zu Boden und erlitt einen Schädelbasisbruch. Sein Geruchs- und Geschmackssinn war danach irreparabel geschädigt, was ihn in lange depressive Phasen und wohl auch vermehrt zu hartem Drogenkonsum trieb. Michael Hutchence lernte 1994 die Fernsehmoderatorin Paula Yates kennen. Diese war liiert mit dem Boomtown Rats – Sänger und Afrika-Aktivisten Bob Geldof, sie hatten drei gemeinsame Kinder. Eine von der Klatschpresse ausführlich begleitete Scheidung schloss sich an, Paula Yates und Michael Hutchence wurden Eltern einer Tochter. Mit der Band konnte er nicht mehr an die ganz großen Erfolge anknüpfen. 1997 kam Michael Hutchence in einem Hotel in Sydney unter nie ganz geklärten Umständen zu Tode. Kurz zuvor hatte er Pläne für eine Solokarriere sowie für die Arbeit als Schauspieler gehabt. Die Band INXS war mit neuen Sängern wenig erfolgreich. Und so bleibt die Geschichte der Band untrennbar mit dem Können und Schicksal ihres charismatischen Frontmanns Michael Hutchence verbunden. Das sechste Studioalbum von INXS "Kick" erschien im Oktober 1987 und verhalf der Band zu internationaler Popularität. Weltweit wurde die Platte 20 Millionen mal verkauft. 1977 startet die Band zunächst mit dem Namen "Farriss Brothers", ab 1979 nennen sie sich INXS. In Australien gelten sie als ausgezeichnete Live-Band, spielen in sogenannten Pub Gigs in Kneipen. 1982 schaffen sie es mit der Single "The One Thing" dank MTV in die US-Top 30 und spielen als Vorband von Queen. Mit "Kick" hatten sich INXS vorgenommen, international durchzustarten mit einer Mischung aus Rock, Funk und Soul und einem Album, auf dem jeder Song eine Hitsingle hätte sein können - am Ende waren es fünf an der Zahl - der größte Hit, "Need You Tonight" erreichte in den USA Platz 1 der Single-Charts. Dabei weigert sich das Plattenlabel Atlantic Records zunächst, die Platte, die in Sydney und Paris aufgenommen wird, zu veröffentlichen. Erst eine erfolgreiche Collegeradio-Tour führt dazu, dass die Platte schließlich doch erscheint. Ein Erfolsgeheimnis von INXS ist, dass sie Funk mit Rock verweben und so einen treibenden Groove generieren. Dabei nutzen sie alle zur Verfügung stehenden musikalischen Mittel: Exzessiven Drum Computer, Schlagzeug, dominante E-Gitarren, Saxophon. Typisches Stilmittel im Sound dieses INXS-Albums sind die Spannung erzeugenden Pausen, wie besonders in "Need You Tonight" und "Never Tear Us Apart". Texten und Komponieren funktionieren beim Album "Kick" kongenial: Musikalisches Mastermind war Andrew Farriss, Michael Hutchence dagegen konnte singen und texten. Für das Album haben die Brüder erstmals Musik und Texte alleine produziert, ohne die Hilfe des Labels oder anderer Autoren. MJ's guest is wine expert, sommelier and founder of Thatcher's Wine Consulting, Thatcher Baker-Briggs. Jane and Jonathan share a combined six years of work in Australia’s most renowned restaurants, and nearly 40 years in the wine industry. Jane has worked at many prestigious restaurants and bars, such as The Violet Hour (Chicago), The Catbird Seat (Nashville), Eleven Madison Park (New York) and Attica (Melbourne).In 2018, Jane passed the Master Sommelier exam, becoming one of only 35 women in the world to do so. Jonathan was a member of the award-winning wine team at Eleven Madison Park starting in 2012, and held the title of Head Sommelier from 2015. Play Episode 81 Here Practically speaking, when every knew sensation is a threat there are things that SE Practitioners need to do in order to enable success rather than recapitulate the feeling of pain, failure, or the impossibility for change. Episode 81 looks at some of the step by step nature of bringing pain laden movement sequences into small successes and "back out again." It's all in the name of success in getting to do something new, rather than the same old thing that calls up the pain and thus reinforces it.

Play Episode 80 Here Sometimes pain is the overriding signal in a client's experience. Try as we might there's simply not much ease or goodness to be found. In this episode I start to look into what we can do about such a scene in order to get some traction to help things change. Funny enough, this episode gets cut short due to local conditions so the next one will tackle the more practical elements while this recording covers some of the basic concerns for the practitioner and client when working with chronic or overwhelming pain.
