Adventure On Deck
When Poetry is the New Sensation. Week 35: Shelley, Byron, Coleridge, and the Romantic Poets

Adventure On Deck

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 25, 2025 32:43

This week is all poetry—our first all-poetry week of the Immersive Humanities project! After struggling through young Werther, I decided I needed to step back and understand Romanticism as a movement. I offer a brief review of the history leading up to Romanticism; after all, most movements are reactions against what precedes them. The printing press and Protestant Reformation blew open European thought, leading to centuries of philosophical upheaval. Empiricists like Bacon and Hume insisted that knowledge must be tested; rationalists like Descartes and Spinoza trusted pure reason. Kant eventually tried to unite both. Their world gave rise to the Enlightenment—and then came the Romantics, pushing back with emotion, imagination, and nature. That's the world our poets wrote in. This week I used Pocket Book of Romantic Poetry and read Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats (skipping Novalis and Hölderlin). I loved some poems, disliked others. Blake's mystical, anti-Christian tone left me cold. Wordsworth's childhood wonder won me over. Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner shocked me--it's gripping, almost epic. Byron was brilliant, scandalous, and endlessly readable. His Prisoner of Chillon might have been my favorite poem of the week. Shelley felt dreamlike and visionary, while Keats, to me, seemed talented but young. What did the world lose when he died?Reading these poets in their historical context changed everything. They're passionate, experimental, and surprisingly radical—not quaint! We are missing out when we resort to tired anthologies to get to know these poets--something that I didn't expect to feel so strongly about! Paired with Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony and Chopin's preludes, this week was a revelation.LINKTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)That cool Medieval Science Book The Genesis of Science by James HannamCONNECTThe complete list of Crack the Book Episodes: https://cheryldrury.substack.com/p/crack-the-book-start-here?r=u3t2rTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts -

Global exposure, and repeat monthly guests continue.welcome back to the BH Sales Kennel Kelp Holistic Healing Hour, with your host, Grandpa Bill. Today, we're going to talk about something that can lift a huge weight off our shoulders—taking back control. We've all been there. Worrying about the past, stressing about the future. It's like our minds are on a hamster wheel, running and running but getting nowhere. We're all human, and those feelings are normal. But what if I told you there's a simple, powerful way to get off that wheel? It's a plan. A step-by-step plan. When you're worried about something, it often feels big and overwhelming. It's a dark cloud on the horizon. But when you break that big, scary cloud into a series of small, manageable steps, it loses its power. You go from feeling helpless to feeling in control.Think about it this way: a big, daunting task is like a staircase with 100 steps you can't see the top of. That's a lot to think about, right? You might get tired just looking at it. But what if you just focus on the very next step? And then the next one? And then the one after that? Before you know it, you're halfway up the stairs. This isn't just about big projects. It can be for anything that's causing you worry. Here's a simple three-step plan you can use today:Identify the Concern: Grab a notepad or just think about it in your head. What's the one thing that's been weighing on you? Maybe it's a doctor's appointment you're nervous about, or a family visit that feels stressful. Acknowledge it, and name it.Break It Down: Now, take that big concern and break it into the very first, smallest, most manageable steps you can take. For example, if you're worried about a doctor's visit, your first step might be "call to confirm the appointment." Your next step might be "write down a list of questions I have for the doctor." These are tiny, simple things.Take Action, No Matter How Small: Do the first step. Right now, if you can. If you can't, write it down and put it somewhere you'll see it. The act of completing that single, small step sends a powerful message to your brain: "I'm in control. I've got this." This action is the antidote to helplessness. It's what stops the cycle of rumination and anxiety. So, whether you're a Silver Streaker worried about a new fitness routine or a young listener anxious about a school project, remember: a plan is your path from helplessness to empowerment. Don't just worry about the mountain; start by picking up a single stone. And I promise you, that first small step will make all the difference."BH Sales Kennel Kelp Holistic Healing Hour: The Power of a PlanGrandpa Bill's Guide to Letting Go: How a Plan Conquers WorryFrom Helpless to Hopeful: The Antidote to Anxiety is ActionGrandpa Bill's Golden Rule: A Step-by-Step Guide to Peace of MindWorry-Proof Your Life: The Secret to Taking Back ControlThe Silver Streaker's Plan for a Calm Life#GrandpaBillHolt,#HolisticHealingHour,#BHSalesKennelKelpHolisticHealingHour,#SilverStreakers,#Health and Wellness,#MentalHealth,#StressRelief,#AnxietyManagement,#TakeAction,#PlanYourLife,#Mindfulness,#Empowerment,#HolisticHealth,#PodcastForLife,#AgingGracefully,

Together myself, Dunlop, an organizational psychologist, and Hultra, an assistant professor with a background in assessment psychology, delve into the practical and ethical implications of using large language models like GPT in job applications and recruitment. The conversation explores how AI is reshaping traditional hiring processes, with a focus on my guest's research into the use of AI in enhancing cover letters and the potential biases and ethical considerations that emerge. The guests share insights from their ongoing research, including the impact of AI on candidates whose primary language is not English and how organizations might need to adapt their selection processes in response to technologies such as Chat GPT.. The episode also touches upon the future of AI in hiring, contemplating the balance between technological advancements and maintaining fairness and inclusivity in recruitment. Key Takeaways:AI is significantly changing organizational selection systems, particularly in enhancing application materials like cover letters.Research into the use of LLMs in the hiring process is critical, but is difficult because of how fast things are moving. We can all agree that LLMs and GPT are going to create seismic shifts in hiring, but the “how remains unknown”Insights from different continents show a diverse understanding of AI's role in hiring and its broader implications. So listen in and you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of AI on global hiring practices, along with practical insights and future prospects in the field of AI and personnel selection.

INXS (a phonetic play on "in excess") were an Australian rock band, formed as the Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales. The founding members were bassist Garry Gary Beers, main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, lead singer and main lyricist Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly. For 20 years, INXS was fronted by Hutchence, whose magnetic stage presence made him the focal point of the band. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements. In 1984, INXS had their first number-one hit in Australia with "Original Sin". The band achieved international success in the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s with the hit albums Listen Like Thieves, Kick, and X, and the singles "What You Need", "Need You Tonight" (the band's only US number-one single), "Devil Inside", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Suicide Blonde" and "New Sensation". After Hutchence's death on 22 November 1997, INXS made appearances with several guest singers, and toured and recorded with Jon Stevens as lead singer, beginning in 2000. In 2005, members of INXS participated in Rock Star: INXS, a reality television series that culminated in the selection of Canadian J.D. Fortune as their new lead singer. Irish singer-songwriter Ciaran Gribbin replaced Fortune as lead singer in 2011. During a concert on 11 November 2012, INXS stated that the performance would be their last, although they did not announce the band's permanent retirement. INXS won six Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards, including three for "Best Group" in 1987, 1989 and 1992; the band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. INXS has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, making them one of Australia's highest selling music acts of all time.Complete setlist - 5/18/23Corey Hart - Never SurrenderCommentaryGenesis - Man On The CornerDon Henley - The Boys Of SummerTina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero (Beyond Thunderdome)CommentaryINXS - The One Thing (extended)INXS - Don't ChangeCommentaryINXS - Here Comes IIINXS - Original Sin/commentaryINXS -What You NeedINXS - I Send A MessageINXS - To Look At YouCommentaryINXS - The Album "Kick" Side AGuns In The SkyNew SensationDevil InsideNeed You Tonight/MediateThe Loved OneCommentaryINXS - The Album "Kick" Side BWild LifeNever Tear Us ApartMystifyKickCalling All NationsTiny DaggersCommentaryINXS - Disappear INXS - Suicide BlondeRecorded live at the She Shack Studio on April 17th and 18th 2023.© Copyright Danny Diess

Joining me today is Jon Farriss. Since 1977 Jon has been the drummer with Austrailian rock/pop icons INXS, along with his brothers Andrew and Tim Farriss, Gary Garry Beers, Kirk Pengilly and of lead singer and main lyricist, the late great Michael Hutchence they created an incredible back catalogue of catchy funk tinged rock/pop songs with amazing hooks and bundles of energy, including songs such as Need You Tonight, Never Tear Us Apart, New Sensation, Mystify, Kick, Suicide Blonde and many more. Join Jon and myself for a very rare interview about his remarkable career, we talk about many things including how his signature drumming style and sound has influenced so many drummers around the world, Jon tells us how Mick Jagger actually told him that INXS had influenced the Rolling Stones for a track on the Steel Wheels album! We also talk about how Jon started using electronics alongside his traditional drum kit and how the band got slated by some music journalists for doing so! I dont want to give too much away, Jon and i had the most incredible and enjoyable chat, i hope you enjoy it as much as i did! Jon, thank you so much for taking the time from your busy schedule to talk to me! Many thanks to Paul Beard for introducing me to Jon, thanks to my good friend Steve Barney for introducing me to Paul and lastly, thank you to Richard Hughes from Keane for supplying me with a great question for Jon!
