This week is all poetry—our first all-poetry week of the Immersive Humanities project! After struggling through young Werther, I decided I needed to step back and understand Romanticism as a movement. I offer a brief review of the history leading up to Romanticism; after all, most movements are reactions against what precedes them. The printing press and Protestant Reformation blew open European thought, leading to centuries of philosophical upheaval. Empiricists like Bacon and Hume insisted that knowledge must be tested; rationalists like Descartes and Spinoza trusted pure reason. Kant eventually tried to unite both. Their world gave rise to the Enlightenment—and then came the Romantics, pushing back with emotion, imagination, and nature.That's the world our poets wrote in. This week I used Pocket Book of Romantic Poetry and read Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats (skipping Novalis and Hölderlin). I loved some poems, disliked others. Blake's mystical, anti-Christian tone left me cold. Wordsworth's childhood wonder won me over. Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner shocked me--it's gripping, almost epic. Byron was brilliant, scandalous, and endlessly readable. His Prisoner of Chillon might have been my favorite poem of the week. Shelley felt dreamlike and visionary, while Keats, to me, seemed talented but young. What did the world lose when he died?Reading these poets in their historical context changed everything. They're passionate, experimental, and surprisingly radical—not quaint! We are missing out when we resort to tired anthologies to get to know these poets--something that I didn't expect to feel so strongly about! Before you know it, you're halfway up the stairs.This isn't just about big projects. It can be for anything that's causing you worry.Here's a simple three-step plan you can use today:Identify the Concern: Grab a notepad or just think about it in your head. What's the one thing that's been weighing on you? Maybe it's a doctor's appointment you're nervous about, or a family visit that feels stressful. Acknowledge it, and name it.Break It Down: Now, take that big concern and break it into the very first, smallest, most manageable steps you can take. For example, if you're worried about a doctor's visit, your first step might be "call to confirm the appointment." Your next step might be "write down a list of questions I have for the doctor." These are tiny, simple things.Take Action, No Matter How Small: Do the first step. Right now, if you can. If you can't, write it down and put it somewhere you'll see it. The act of completing that single, small step sends a powerful message to your brain: "I'm in control. I've got this." This action is the antidote to helplessness. Young Australian rocker, Cassidy Paris released her debut album, “New Sensation” on December 8th.  Cassidy has a very bright future ahead of her. Raised on classic hard rock and inspired by female rockers such as Lzzy Hale, Joan Jett, Pink, Pat Benatar & Avril Lavigne, the fiercely determined young woman is on a mission to inspire a new generation of younger fans to not only listen to Rock ‘n' Roll but pick up a guitar instead of a phone. At just 20 years old, Cassidy has released two sold out eps – “Broken Hearted” & “Flirt”, while having performed multiple live shows all over her home country of Australia and has now unleashed her first solo record on the international markets via Frontiers Music Srl.  At the age of 11, Cassidy met singer songwriter Paul Laine (ex-Danger Danger, The Deviant's), who developed a unique mentoring role. Paul took Cassidy under his wing to help develop her as an artist and songwriter, collaborating with her in songwriting and producing her music. In 2018, she released the song 'Stand', a heartfelt song about ‘standing up for yourself' as a young woman. Cassidy continues to deliver that message, promoting anti-bullying through performances at many schools around Melbourne, Australia and is an active campaigner for the worldwide ‘Metalheads Against Bullying' organization. Her talents have not gone unnoticed by one of the major guitar giants Fender, lending their support by joining forces with Cassidy to bring her on as an endorser of Fender Squier Guitars. Cassidy has also joined the roster of Silverback Touring Agency. Cassidy has also been acknowledged as a semi-finalist for her song writing efforts in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) for Best Rock Song and Best Unsigned Artist. INXS (a phonetic play on "in excess") were an Australian rock band, formed as the Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales. The founding members were bassist Garry Gary Beers, main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, lead singer and main lyricist Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly. For 20 years, INXS was fronted by Hutchence, whose magnetic stage presence made him the focal point of the band. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements.In 1984, INXS had their first number-one hit in Australia with "Original Sin".
