Iva Davies was born and raised in regional Australia, where his early exposure to music set the stage for his remarkable career. Trained as a classical musician, he excelled as an oboist. However, the allure of rock music and the emerging punk and new wave scenes in the 70s inspired him to shift gears. Influenced by artists like David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Brian Eno, Iva began exploring electronic and experimental sounds, which would later define Icehouse's unique style. In 1977, Davies formed Flowers with bassist Keith Welsh, marking the beginning of a significant chapter in Australian music. Originally a covers band, Flowers soon began incorporating original material. Their raw energy and Iva's charismatic stage presence quickly made them a favourite in Sydney's pub rock circuit. The release of their debut album, Icehouse, in 1980, was a game-changer. Featuring tracks like "We Can Get Together" and "Can't Help Myself," the album showcased a blend of new wave, punk, and synth-driven rock. Its success led to an international record deal but a legal conflict over the name Flowers prompted the band to rebrand as Icehouse. As Icehouse, the group became a vehicle for Iva's creative vision. Their 1982 album, Primitive Man, marked a major turning point. The album included the upbeat "Great Southern Land," a song that became an unofficial Australian anthem. The next album, Sidewalk (1984), showcased Davies' maturing songwriting and reflected his growing interest in themes of isolation and urban life. Though less commercially successful than its predecessor, it set the stage for the band's magnum opus, Man of Colours (1987). Man of Colours was Icehouse's most commercially successful album, cementing their place as global stars. Tracks like "Electric Blue," co-written with John Oates of Hall & Oates dominated international charts. The album resonated with fans worldwide. In Australia, Man of Colours became the highest-selling album of 1987 and earned multiple ARIA Awards, including Album of the Year. Iva's passion for technology and experimentation was evident throughout Icehouse's career. He embraced cutting-edge digital synthesizers and recording techniques, creating a sound that was both innovative and timeless. In addition to his work with Icehouse, Iva composed scores for films like Razorback (1984) and collaborated with the Sydney Dance Company on Boxes (1985) and Berlin (1995), blending classical and modern musical elements. Despite lineup changes and shifts in the music industry, Icehouse remained a beloved act. In the 1990s, the band released Code Blue (1990) and Big Wheel (1993), which explored deeper and more personal themes. Although these albums didn't match the commercial heights of earlier works, they reinforced Davies' reputation as a versatile and introspective artist. By the 2000s, Icehouse focused on live performances, reconnecting with fans through nostalgia-fueled tours. Davies also reworked classic tracks for the 2011 album Icehouse: White Heat 30 Hits, which celebrated the band's enduring legacy. Iva Davies and Icehouse have left an indelible mark on Australian music and beyond. Great Southern Land is regularly cited as one of Australia's greatest songs, and Icehouse's albums continue to influence generations of musicians. Davies' fusion of classical training, electronic innovation, and rock sensibility has made him one of Australia's most iconic and enduring musical talents. Today Icehouse remains active, with Iva at the helm, performing to loyal audiences and to new fans. The band are celebrated as pioneers of Australian music and continue to bridge the gap between the past and the future of rock and electronic sounds. Catch Icehouse when they headline the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR starting January 2025. Supported by several other notable Australian bands in Noiseworks, Wolfmother, Eskimo Joe, Baby Aniamls, Killing Heidi and Bachelor Girl - this is sure to be an incredible outdoor music festival.

After confidence boosting performances with Terence Trent D'Arby, the Tim Rice Extravaganza and closing out the 2000 Olympic Games, INXS sought an old mate to take the frontman duties in ex Noiseworks lead singer, Jon Stevens. Having carved a 20 plus year career as a soloist, frontman and pivotal member of the 1992/93 Jesus Christ Superstar revival stage show throughout Australia, Jon's credentials were bonafide and deserving. With domestic tours throughout Australia, subsequent ones to the USA, Latin America and Europe, it looked like INXS had overcome the inner uncertainty that plagued their previous 4 years. Armed with a plan to assert themselves across the globe in both a “live concert” and recording sense, optimism was high. Despite strong reviews of Jon's contribution to the band particularly in the performing sense, Jon would get disheartened with the lack of band creativity in the studio. With the sole single “I Get Up” released in 2003 to coincide with the Rugby Union World Cup the only fresh material, Jon would decide to leave INXS to pursue his own musical interests. That aside, Jon's contribution to the healing, morale and confidence for INXS to continue as a going concern entity cannot be underestimated and should be appreciated. We also go back to the year 1998 with a little pleasure and pain segment highlighting the sheer disparity of great and not so great songs that permeated the airwaves. So sit back, pour yourself a favourite tipple and enjoy a jam packed episode 182 of INXS: Access all Areas. Respected as one of Australia's iconic musicians, Ian Moss (5x time Aria winner & original member / guitarist of Australian super group 'Cold Chisel' drops by to discuss his current live tour and Rivers Run Dry' Deluxe Album Release. Brad explores the history of the term ‘album' and have a good ol' ramble about the changing view of full length records in the modern music business. While primarily recognised as an axeman of unusual tenacity and sweet melodic sensibility, Ian's distinctive vocal is the essential signature of his soulful, bluesy muse – as it has been since his first tentative foray into music during the early 1970s.Born and raised in Alice Springs, Ian started playing guitar in local teenage bands but moved to Adelaide after failing one of his high school years, planning to repeat in the big city. Fate intervened when he answered an advertisement for a guitarist in a shop window in 1973, joining the band that was to become a legend in Australia – Cold Chisel. After Moss joined organist and principal songwriter Don Walker and drummer Steve Prestwich, the group took shape with singer Jimmy Barnes and eventually bass player Phil Small, starting the hard grind of playing gigs on the back of flatbed trucks and in suburban hotels. Barnes remembered young Mossy as “a boy from the bush who didn't wear shoes but played fantastic”. They hit the road and paid their dues, playing countless one-night stands across the country. The reputation and status of Cold Chisel steadily grew, mainly on the strength of blistering live shows, and in time their well-crafted recordings became staples of radio airplay.By 1980, with the release of the seminal East album, Cold Chisel was the biggest band in the country. Moreover, they defined a national sound – hard-driving rock chased by a shot of blues, lyrics depicting the Australian experience and resonating powerfully with young working class fans. Moss's voice began to shine through such seminal Cold Chisel songs as Never Before, Bow River (written by Moss) and a gorgeous rendition of Ray Charles' Georgia. However, efforts to translate overwhelming Australian success to Europe and the United States failed to gain traction, serving to demoralise, frustrate and eventually dissolve the band at the height of its creative powers. While the band's Last Stand tour in December 1983 closed an important chapter in Ian Moss's musical career, Cold Chisel remains one of Australia's favourite bands long after its demise.Enjoying the status of Australia's best guitarist, Moss carefully evolved into a solo artist of the same calibre and commanding the same respect as Cold Chisel. After five years of patient nurturing, Moss released his debut single Tucker's Daughter in January 1989, and caused an immediate sensation. The anthemic song – which Moss wrote in collaboration with Don Walker – sat in the Top 10 for 11 weeks and hit No 1 for two weeks, achieving gold sales status after 15 weeks and selling more than 73,000 copies. Moss's second solo single, Telephone Booth, was released in June that year, hit the Top 10 and remained in the Top 20 for 10 weeks. This bold renaissance of his solo career amplified Moss's willingness to embrace new ideas and influences. “It took a bit of nerve for me to unplug and play acoustic, but it injected this freshness into my playing,” he says. “It was a significant new path for me.” Heartened by success for that album, a second chapter of Moss's acoustic recordings – his sixth solo album Let's All Get Together, released in 2007 – saw the input of guests including James Morrison and Margaret Urlich adding colour to striking new interpretations of familiar songs, including Flame Trees and Choir Girl. To support the album release, Moss undertook an extensive tour with former Noiseworks and INXS singer Jon Stevens, and further touring in early 2008 showed Moss to be an especially dextrous musical stylist; not just a rock player, not just an acoustic strummer, but a truly seasoned and rounded musical talent. In 2008, Moss was on the Australian television series It Takes Two, singing duets with celebrities and showing a side of his musical character that surprised many listeners. “When I put aside the guitar and sang a few soul ballads on that show, people were suddenly listening to me differently. They'd say ‘Yeah, we knew you sang, but we didn't know you could really sing'. It was both flattering and frustrating. I kept wondering what they thought I'd been doing for past 30 years. It showed that there was a different side of my music that hadn't really been heard by enough people before.” Mossy is now allowing his guitar work to take a back seat while he concentrates on singing – which is the focus of his new album Soul on West 53rd that features fresh takes on classic soul songs from the likes of Sam Cooke, Al Green, Otis Redding and Levi Stubbs. This product of New York recording sessions with producer Danny Kortchmar and an all-star band of soul session musicians, including drummer Steve Jordan, Leon Pendarvis on keyboards, Neil Jason on bass and Hugh McCracken on guitar, is another bold venture from Moss that will certainly turn heads. When audiences hear the power and excitement on Soul on West 53rd, it will reinforce what Ian Moss has to offer as a vocalist of repute. The album release will also give him the impetus to reconnect with his supportive legion of European audiences – and maybe even reach America. “It's nice to fantasise about that, taking my soul songs to America. I'd love to give it a try, but I know it won't be easy.”Significantly, as Moss prepares to introduce material from his new album to live audiences, the influence of his New York soul sessions has inspired a new burst of song writing for him. “Working with such classic songs has brought a lot of ideas for original material as well. For the next album, featuring my own songs, I'd expect it to follow the same style. There's something really great going on here.”The setting had been established for Moss to emerge as an important solo artist. His debut album Matchbook, released in August 1989, entered the charts at No 1 and remained there for three consecutive weeks. It stayed in the Top 10 for 14 weeks and has sold more than 185,000 copies. When he went back out on the road, Moss's live shows drew a hoard of Chisel faithful and a league of new fans. In 1989, Moss toured for 25 weeks, playing dynamic and energetic performances five or six nights every week to virtually full houses across Australia. Crowds were left hungry for more.Moss closed off a triumphant year by winning five Australian Record Industry Association Awards in 1989: Best Australian Debut Single for Tucker's Daughter and Best Australian Debut Album for Matchbook, Australian Song of the Year for Tucker's Daughter, Best Australian Album for Matchbook and Best Australian Male Artist. In 1990, Mossy took his music to the world, touring and gaining airplay across Scandinavia and northern Europe. At home, as a live video recorded on the Matchbook Concert Tour went Gold on the day of release, Moss returned to the studio to start recording his second album, Worlds Away. Released in Australia in October 1991, the album was then issued in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Scandinavia the following year. In 1993, Moss consolidated his growing European fan base with tours in April and May through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, earning high praise in fantastic reviews.Moss took stock of his musical output in 1995, changing direction to embrace the blues in bolder fashion, and in the studio this translated to recording a much tougher album than his previous releases suggested. Petrolhead, his third solo offering that was released in 1996, had Moss playing bluesy rock with none of the heavily produced, big budget sheen that had been applied his late-1980s and early-1990s recordings. With lan Rilen (from Rose Tattoo and X) on bass, Paul Demarco (Rose Tattoo, Catfish) on drums and Don Walker on occasional keyboards and song writing, the sound was recorded almost live, stripped back and honest without ever losing its innate power. “It was a conscious decision to get back to something I was always happy doing,” says Moss. “The result is tough, ballsy blues meets rock… plenty of heart, alive and kicking.”A Cold Chisel reunion during 1998 – both in the studio for the recording of new material and subsequent touring to promote the resulting Last Wave of Summer album – put Ian back in the national spotlight as a showman and musician of dazzling ability. It reminded the Australian public of Moss's alluring talent and diversity as a performer, as did another Cold Chisel reunion tour in 2003 and his input to Jimmy Barnes' Double Happiness album of duets in 2005.However, during 2005, Moss's musical output took another exciting fresh turn. He was invited to record an album of acoustic songs for Liberation Music and the Six Strings album – part of the Liberation Blue label's engaging acoustic series – was the result.2018 will bring a new chapter in Ian's career as he releases the new self-titled studio album, his sixth, and heads to the road for what will be his biggest national tour in decades. In 2007 he told the Sydney Morning Herald, “I haven't made my definitive album yet.” Ten years later with his the self-titled “Ian Moss”, he might have just done that.Mossy's sublime playing – on his Fender electric and Maton acoustic – is as expressive as ever. “Sometimes the words are useless for what it is I'm trying to get across,” he confides in ‘Hold On (To What We Got)'.Of course, that underplays Mossy's vocal – a superb instrument in its own right – as well as the powerful personal stories on this record. But Mossy's finest work is all about feel. And it's that feel that tells you everything you need to know. It's no accident that the album is self-titled. This is the pure stuff. Classic Mossy. In August of 2018 Ian was invited to take part in the Jimmy Webb and Friends concerts along side David Campbell, Kate Ceberano, Ed Kuepper, Cold Chisel bandmate Jimmy Barnes and of course the master songwriter Jimmy Webb and blew the room away.In October 2018 he performed the Cold Chisel classic ‘Flame Trees' to a global audience of millions at the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games on the Steps of the iconic Sydney Opera House.2019 saw the 30th Anniversary of the iconic and landmark album Matchbook and a national tour with a killer band that received rave reviews. The album was released on August 1, 1989 and peaked at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. It remained in the Top 10 for an amazing 14 weeks, shipping more than 200,000 copies in the first 12 months alone. The album went on to win Album of the Year, Best Male Artist and Breakthrough Artist – Album, Breakthrough Artist – Single and Song of the Year (shared with Don Walker) for ‘Tucker's Daughter' at the ARIA Music Awards in 1990.As Cold Chisel's biographer Anthony O'Grady observed, “When Moss goes into guitar dream world he pulls out chords and notes and sounds that do not fit the plot as such, but which create new dimensions – astounding stuff that can never be reached through intellectual process, only through a quantum leap of intuition and imagination.”

With the year 2000 upon us, the world was entering an exciting new century. Music, cinema, pop culture and the arts were evolving and INXS were starting to take bigger steps in a world without Michael Hutchence. With the dust settling on Michael's posthumous album release, INXS took the left field move of signing up to the Tim Rice Spectacular Concert Series through Australia. Joining recognized artists such as Iva Davies (Icehouse), David Essex (Rock On) and a bevy of renowned Australian artists re-interpreting Tim's amazing back catalogue of songs. With confidence slowly returning as an entity, the band continued to surprise teaming up with Jon Stevens (formerly Noiseworks) for two impromptu but sold out gigs in Melbourne and Sydney. With fans traveling as far as Chicago and the UK to attend these gigs, the level of passion and pride at seeing a full-set INXS gig again was palpable! Combined with some private corporate gigs, the band made their long awaited international return headlining the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games with a rollicking updated version of What you Need that had the crowd on their feet. So with small steps, INXS were getting their mojo back in a steady and incremental way against the odds. Inger and Jason have been on holidays, so there's a lot to catch up on. Jason was off the grid, finding boxes of romance novels in country opp shops while Inger borked all the authenticator apps on her phone and was locked out of ANU email. There's a brief foray into Power Ballads and the Australian 80s band Noiseworks. There's a rather large mail bag to get through (13:53), which also prompts a bit of a discussion about AI (again) before the duo get to their work problems segment at 30:52. This time David Allen's classic 'Getting things done' gets a bit of an airing, along with some reflection on tools and techniques that the pair think will carry on into 2023. There''s a slide deck you can follow with the episode if you want more detail. For once, Inger does not have a feminist critique and wonders if Allen got a sensitivity editor. Jason has read three books (starting at 1:18:39) - Inger guesses correctly they are all Navy Seal related so he feels both judged and seen. Inger has been reading a romance set in a Strictly Ballroom reality TV show world as well as a couple of useful things on managing events, thinking about ADHD and the Digital Zettlecasten. In the Two minutes tips (1:35:52) Inger publicly commits Jason to the next On The Reg book project - listen to the end to find out!Mentioned in this episodeVideo of Noiseworks 'Take me back'- for those unfamiliar, Noiseworks was THE premier 80's Australian power ballad band (16 year old. Singer-songwriter Jon Stevens is recognised as one of the most talented rock musicians to emerge from Australasia. His solo career took off in 1980 when, at the age of 16, he topped the New Zealand charts with his first two singles. His commercial success didn't stop there, as Jon went on to front Sydney rock band Noiseworks, who released three platinum studio albums. Jon went on to perform in the Australian production of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, and following the death of his friend Michael Hutchence, he was asked to take his place as the lead singer of INXS and toured with the band. He's continued his success as a musician, songwriter and producer – and will be back on our shores in March next year to perform in four special shows along with local legends The Narcs. Jon Stevens was Simon Barnett and James Daniels' guest for this week's Six and a Song. LISTEN ABOVE

Jon Stevens (born 8 October 1961) is a New Zealand singer, best known for his work with Noiseworks and Jesus Christ Superstar.
My Guest today is Shauna Jensen. Shauna is a vocalist with an outstanding pedigree. She has an illustrious career and has worked in, not only Australia's live music scene but also the recording industry as well. Shauna started her career singing in 1970 with a band ‘Purple Vision' who's biggest highlight for Shauna was supporting Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs. In the early 70's Shauna tried her hand at musical theater, being in the original cast of Jesus Christ Superstar. This led Shauna to studio work. In her role as a studio session singer her voice has been heard on many TV and radio commercials as well as soundtracks for films and TV series. From this began a successful career singing backing vocals and touring for a couple of decades with Australia's leading Rock Industry professionals, including Jimmy Barnes, Noiseworks, Cold Chisel, Richard Clapton and Doug Parkinson. She even recorded an album (unreleased) of duets with Hugh Jackman and produced by the late legendary Phil Ramone. She has appeared on TV as a judge on Network 7's Popstars Live, as a regular panelist on Foxtel's Beauty and The Beast, Featured singer on Foxtel's Studio A, as well as every incarnation of the Midday Show on Nine Network as a soloist. Shauna recently appeared as one of the 100 judges in Network 7's All Together Now. In the last decade Shauna has had many sell out cabaret shows in Sydney and is in high demand. 2020 marked Shauna's 50th year as a professional musician. An incredible singer. Shes a gem and she calls it how she sees it. Ladies and gentleman, please give it up for the fabulous Shauna Jensen. Not to be missed... If ever a country can thank and pay homage to one person who unequivocally shaped the landscape and soundscapes of Rock n Roll, Australia should do so. Mark Opitz undoubtedly is the George Martin of Australian music with a resume that boasts AC/DC, The Angels, Australian Crawl, Noiseworks, The Hoodoo Gurus, Divinyls, The Models, and our very own INXS to name a few. To knock back Guns N Roses also highlights just how much Mark was in demand. Not just a Producer, he has worked in A&R, owned and ran studios such as the legendary Rhinocerous in Sydney, created unique musical platform businesses, and shared his passions and expertise via work with the ABC and Australian National University in Canberra via his esteemed Fellowship stint. But today Mark is yours. Sit back and absorb part one in this unique musical insight into the man that arguably produced 3 of INXS' greatest studio albums and revel in the legacy that is “Mark Opitz”! #inxs #inxsmusic #inxsfans #inxsmusic #inxs #coldchisel #acdc #raycharles #theangelsband #noiseworks This week's episode is sponsored by Tilly&Wilbur Expressive Wear. Steve Balbi is one of the all-time great Australian musicians and an icon in the industry. From first appearing on TV Talent quest show ‘Pot of Gold’ at the tender age of 12 in 1976, before leaving school at 16yrs of age to chase his dream of being a performing artist. Not too long after he founded and produced Aussie chart-toppers band ‘Noiseworks’ in 1986.The accolades continue, with countless world-wide tours, 4 multi-platinum award winning albums and various ARIA Award nominations later, as well as performing on vocals and guitar for David Bowie’s Hours session.Steve has also delivered the rebirth of Australian Cricket in the 2018/19 Summer composing and producing the new Test Cricket Theme song for FOX Sports. His new album composed during lockdown in 2020 ‘I Think I Know For Sure’ has also just been released. In this episode, Steve gives a raw insight into life on the road as a musician, what it was like selling out concerts 6 nights a week and we are lucky enough to get a beautiful Bob Dylan rendition that truly is amazing! However, what really shines through in this episode is the authenticity of Steve Balbi. His inspiring example of multiple times throughout his life where he made a decision to follow his heart and passion, trusting his instinct and believing that anything is possible.Steve is a down to earth man with a beautiful voice who has had a remarkable life. He lives by a great set of values and it was without doubt one of my favourite episodes to date.To connect with Steve Balbi:Website - https://stevebalbi.comInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/stevebalbi/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Steve Balbi has been in the music biz for a long time and played at the highest level. Success in his homeland of Australia with 80s juggernaut "Noiseworks", international success with "The Electric Hippies", and now a new solo album that he recorded in his bedroom. All this led us to Steve, and given the fact he's just completed the build of his first home studio, we had to catch up and talk about recording at home in general. Just wait till you hear how he devised himself an amp room, then ask yourself, what noises do I want to hide in my studio, and where could I stick them? Jon Stevens was still in high school when he first had a top ten single which caused a lot of unwanted attention from NZ bullies. He left school early which was a probably a good thing because his brother, Frankie said Jon was 'a cheeky little shit' growing up. The Noiseworks front man filled the signiifcant hole for INXS when their lead singer and his good mate, Michael Hutchence took his life. He had some great years with the band before he quit, claiming their manager was 'the worst in the world.'
As per of our program 06/03/19 we got the chance to speak with Jon Stevens lead singer of Noiseworks and The Dead Daisies about his life so far as a rock singer, plus his current tours and fund raising release to help the farmers.
If you don't recognise the name Steve Balbi immediately, you will quickly join the dots when the songs Touch, Take Me Back, No Lies, Burning Feeling, Simple Man and even Hot Chilli Woman are recalled. Being a key song writer and the bass player in Australian rock band Noiseworks, Steve saw heightened fame in the late 80s/early 90s with hit after hit which many of us will be able to recite word for word. With a highly respected career in music even up to the era of Noiseworks, Steve went on to continue to expand his repertoire forming Electric Hippies, launching a solo career, working with David Bowie, fronting Australian music legends Mi-Sex in recent years and many, many other projects. The list of Steve's accomplishments in music is long and his work to this day continues to expand and grow. Notably Steve recently teamed up with Jessica Irwin who is an illustrator, author and musician among other talents who lives with Cerebral Palsy and has control of only her eyes and mind. Their collaboration resulted in the release of 'Whispers (Psykinetic Mix)' using new technology called Atmosphere. which is eye controlled music software developed by Dr Jordan Nguyen at Psykinetic. Steve and Jessica have performed live together at Telstra Vantage Sydney in 2017 and will be at TEDx in Melbourne 13 August 2018. Steve and I caught up in his studio in Ultimo Sydney and went on a whirlwind of a ride. We took a haphazard approach touching on various moments throughout his career from recent collaborations to his earlier years in Noiseworks and Electric Hippies. We also speak of Steve's solo work including his upcoming new album as well as his recovery from addiction and how sobriety has helped him progress forward and lead a better life. There are a stack of great stories and insights in this episode. I believe that Steve is a real role model when it comes to the dedication of your craft and passion. He continues to amaze those who love his work and bridge new worlds together through music and personal connection. Steve Balbi's new album 'Humans', inspired by the book Humans of New York, will be out early 2019 and the first single 'Modern Love' comes out 26 October 2018. I'll update all of the details below when it's all released however be sure to follow Steve and his projects to keep up to date via the links below. It’s hard to categorise John. He was a reality TV contestant on The Biggest Loser, he worked as a bouncer at Melbourne nightclubs and pubs in the thriving pub rock scene of the late ‘70s and ‘80s when bands like Midnight Oil, The Angels, Noiseworks and The Uncanny X Men were all making a name for themselves. He tells me as a bouncer he was shot at and stabbed. He’s worked in retail and these days he owns his own gym, Jetts Noosa. John Morrall is passionate about business and passing on what he knows and understands about the game.

Phil Duggan founded Noiseworks just over 4 years. His background saw him setting up MySpace profiles and later Facebook profiles. He set up his own business after years of research and improving his knowledge of social media. Why Facebook It's a hot topic. It is the biggest and best return. Compared to Adwords it relies on someone who is searching for something. With Facebook advertising, you can target your ideal audience for pennies and can also go about your rfp consulting. You can spend £15-20 to reach 20,000 people. But 62% of FB paid advertisers aren't getting their ideal audience on Facebook according to a report. Small Business Trends. Why Facebook? It's the most popular social media platform. It comes down to the audience you choose. You must understand your own customer and their habits. One of Phil's clients ran a campaign to recruit sales-people. He discovered they had chosen a very basic profile. He advised them to utilise a much deeper demographic, - what they buy online, are they married etc. Phil advises you to look at Ad Manager – at first it can be confusing. See what POSSIBILITIES are there. It helps you by giving you suggestions of associated demographics. Boosting posts. You can boost a post but the more in depth campaign style is through Facebook Ad Manager. Boosting can be misleading. If you do it from your mobile, FB don't give you depth via mobile boosts. Use the desktop version. Do split tests to see the impact on your demographic. Should I do it because my neighbouring business is doing it? Look at your business customers. Are they on Facebook. If not you are shouting in an empty room. Are the affluent really on FB? 80% of UK wealth is over 50. Their level of engagement. It's a stalking platform for your kids. Phil calls it the Grandma effect. See pictures of the kids. Phil sees social media advertising as an evolutionary thing. Younger people are used to social media. Once you have identified who your target customer is, ask yourself what the value is of that person. Sign up now for a free ebook/white paper/access to a blog article Get your 5 DIY tips for the Bank holiday weekendGive them some solid value in exchange for their contact details. They don't care they've given you their contact details. It is about Facebook list building. Import your existing email list you audience to create a lookalike audience. Import the list into FB and FB will create a lookalike audience. There was some confusion in the interview about importing a customer list into Facebook. Here is what Facebook say. https://www.facebook.com/business/help/170456843145568 I also had it confirmed that the data provider was still creating lists to be passed to Facebook to establish a custom target audience. What are the factors that a small business needs to consider on Facebook? The visual aspect of an ad. The Facebook timeline or newsfeed is busy. So, have the most eye-catching imagery as possible. Video is a great example. Or go live. Video – make it personal to the campaign. Use your iPhone. Engagement rises. Content is key. Graphics – don't use stock images. It is lazy. As a business owner, it says you don't care enough. Think out your strategy. Image over headline. Live recording? Will Facebook live be the future of news broadcasting. The Westminster attack was being shown live on Facebook. Phil speculated that the FA Cup Final could be filmed from thousands of different views! Is Facebook Live all about being pitched? There is a magnetic attraction to it, but it feels like you are going to get pitched. Phil mentioned that Gary Vaynerchuk made the point that we marketers ruin new inventions like FB Live, Instagram, Snapchat etc.
