Join us as we delve into the remarkable journey of Garry Gary Beers, the bassist of the legendary Australian rock band INXS. From his early beginnings, through the meteoric rise of INXS, to his current musical endeavours with AshenMoon, Garry's story is a testament to passion, resilience, and evolution in the music industry.Early Life and Musical GenesisBorn in Manly, Sydney, Australia, Garry was introduced to the world of music during his high school years. He initially picked up the acoustic guitar and formed a band with his schoolmates. A twist of fate led him to switch to the bass guitar, a decision that would shape his entire future . The transition was serendipitous, and paved the way for him to meet Andrew Farriss. Together, they formed the band Dr. Dolphin, which eventually evolved into The Farriss Brothers, and later, the globally acclaimed INXS. INXS emerged as a powerhouse in the rock and new wave scenes of the 80s and 90s. The band's unique blend of rock, pop, and dance elements resonated with audiences worldwide. Garry's bass lines became the backbone of numerous chart-topping hits, including "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside," "Never Tear Us Apart," and "Suicide Blonde." Garry also co-wrote several tracks like "Listen Like Thieves," "Don't Change," and "Perfect Strangers." The band toured relentlessly and Michael Hutchence's dynamic stage presence solidified the band's reputation, leading to sales of over 70 million albums and induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. Following Michael's tragic passing in 1997, INXS faced tumultuous times. Garry explored various musical avenues and in 89, during a hiatus from INXS, joined the group Absent Friends.Garry soonn relocated to Los Angeles, immersing himself in songwriting and production. His passion for craftsmanship led him to design and build his own line of bass guitars under the brand GGB Basses, merging his love for music with his skills in woodwork and electronics. Garry co-founded AshenMoon when he teamed up with fellow Australian vocalist Toby Rand. The band embarked on a journey to create a fresh yet nostalgically resonant sound. Their self-produced tracks, including singles like "GODTANK," "DON'T WAKE ME," and "STARGAZE," have garnered attention for their raw energy and melodic depth. The band is about to tour Australia for the very first time.Garry Gary Beers's story is a fascinating one.

Additionally, Nick reveals some long held rumours and anecdotes as fact putting to rest long held rumours particularly the “wig” scenario. As a relative rookie screen actor, Nick's role in portraying Tim Farriss was a pivotal and crucial element to the credibility and quality of INXS: Never Tear Us Apart being the critical and commercial success it was. Occasionally a song comes along that sits sedately surrounded by more spectacular songs but somehow over the journey of time reveals itself sonically, lyrically and emotionally within our hearts and minds. That's the story of INXS' masterpiece “The Stairs” from 1990's X album. After the one, two punch of Suicide Blonde and Disappear, both which climbed into the Billboard Top 10 Charts, The Stairs subtly and gradually provides a moment of introspective reflection in urban living amongst the masses and social alienation. With a contemplative introduction devoid of lyrics and full band interaction until the 80th second, INXS (according to Michael Hutchence) commit to a songwriting process and pathway that was to this point, their most ambitious recording. Absent was the traditional intro, verse, chorus, verse outro song structure with a greater emphasis on lyrical resonance and escalation. With a passioned vocal by Michael and a film clip that supports the lyrical themes of isolation and lack of community connection, INXS create a soundscape, lyric and message that some 34 years later has current day meaning in this online heavy but community lacking world. Having done deep dive episodes on more prominent singles such as What you Need, Never tear us Apart, Don't Change, Burn for You and The One Thing, we are proud to share a unique deep cut that has only blossomed and grown in the hearts, minds and souls of true INXS fans since 1990. INXS (a phonetic play on "in excess") were an Australian rock band, formed as the Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales. The founding members were bassist Garry Gary Beers, main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, lead singer and main lyricist Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly. For 20 years, INXS was fronted by Hutchence, whose magnetic stage presence made him the focal point of the band. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements. In 1984, INXS had their first number-one hit in Australia with "Original Sin". The band achieved international success in the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s with the hit albums Listen Like Thieves, Kick, and X, and the singles "What You Need", "Need You Tonight" (the band's only US number-one single), "Devil Inside", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Suicide Blonde" and "New Sensation". After Hutchence's death on 22 November 1997, INXS made appearances with several guest singers, and toured and recorded with Jon Stevens as lead singer, beginning in 2000. In 2005, members of INXS participated in Rock Star: INXS, a reality television series that culminated in the selection of Canadian J.D. Fortune as their new lead singer. Irish singer-songwriter Ciaran Gribbin replaced Fortune as lead singer in 2011. During a concert on 11 November 2012, INXS stated that the performance would be their last, although they did not announce the band's permanent retirement. INXS won six Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards, including three for "Best Group" in 1987, 1989 and 1992; the band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. INXS has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, making them one of Australia's highest selling music acts of all time.Complete setlist - 5/18/23Corey Hart - Never SurrenderCommentaryGenesis - Man On The CornerDon Henley - The Boys Of SummerTina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero (Beyond Thunderdome)CommentaryINXS - The One Thing (extended)INXS - Don't ChangeCommentaryINXS - Here Comes IIINXS - Original Sin/commentaryINXS -What You NeedINXS - I Send A MessageINXS - To Look At YouCommentaryINXS - The Album "Kick" Side AGuns In The SkyNew SensationDevil InsideNeed You Tonight/MediateThe Loved OneCommentaryINXS - The Album "Kick" Side BWild LifeNever Tear Us ApartMystifyKickCalling All NationsTiny DaggersCommentaryINXS - Disappear INXS - Suicide BlondeRecorded live at the She Shack Studio on April 17th and 18th 2023.© Copyright Danny Diess

I dont want to give too much away, Jon and i had the most incredible and enjoyable chat, i hope you enjoy it as much as i did! Jon, thank you so much for taking the time from your busy schedule to talk to me! Many thanks to Paul Beard for introducing me to Jon, thanks to my good friend Steve Barney for introducing me to Paul and lastly, thank you to Richard Hughes from Keane for supplying me with a great question for Jon!

The episode starts with Joyce Maynard, who shot to fame with her 1998 memoir At Home in the World, in which she wrote candidly about the traumatic relationship she had with the author of Catcher in the Rye, J.D. But Maynard has also written many novels including Labor Day and To Die For, both made into acclaimed movies, as well as (more recently), Count the Ways.   After discovering what books found their way onto Joyce's reading list in 2022 we pose the same question to Darcey Steinke, author of Suicide Blonde, Jesus Saves, and Flash Count Diary, among others, before rounding out the show with the legendary Edmund White, now 82, a pioneer in contemporary queer fiction (A Boy's Own Story, The Beautiful Room is Empty)  and still writing up a storm (a new novel is due in May 2023) and the irrepressible director, writer, and performer John Waters, a debut novelist himself in 2022 with Liarmouth: A Feel Bad Romance.

Darcey Steinke is the author of five novels and a memoir, as well as most recently, the fragmentary investigation, Flash Count Diary: Menopause and the Vindication of Natural Life. Her work has been described as suburban Gothic and frequently borrows from her own life, drawing on her complicated relationship with her late mother, a one-time model and pageant girl, and the distant figure of her father–a Lutheran pastor. In her novel Sister Golden Hair, the narrator is a teenager whose father used to be a pastor, and whose mother was once a beauty queen. The protagonist of her novel, Jesus Saves is haunted by her mother's misery, but it was her second novel, Suicide Blonde, a candid, deeply poetic tale of sexual exploration published in 1992, that turned Steinke into a literary sensation, elevating her into the company of celebrated outlaw writers, like William Burroughs and Kathy Acker. She says, “Questions about my relationship to the universal force or God, or how we're supposed to be oriented to this life or how we're meant to live with the fragility of the human body, these questions are central to me, these are the questions that drive my work.”

They say the hardest thing to do once you've climbed the peak of a mountain in a sporting or artistic sense is to stay there!   So when INXS graduated to the biggest band on the planet during 1988 and 1989, the pressure was on to surpass “Kick” with its next album. Album X as Michael Hutchence often referred to it marked a shift in songwriting, lyrical maturity, and Michael's vocal delivery.   A front ended with the dynamic Suicide Blonde, Disappear, By my Side, and the unsurpassed The Stairs, X definitely consolidated INXS' reputation as a band to be reckoned with. However, 30 years later, was it the artistic statement the band wanted? Did it play safe? Did it achieve the intended goal of maintaining that position at the apex of the mountain? On this week’s podcast, we speak with Darcey Steinke, author of Flash Count Diary: Menopause and the Vindication of Natural Life. When menopause hit, she set out on a quest to better understand what was happening to her body and her identity as a woman.  The result is an extraordinary memoir that is more than personal.  It is a cultural quest to examine menopause through the lens of science, history, animal nature, and supernatural and patriarchal systems of belief.  For Darcey, hot flashes became a conduit to self-discovery.  Perhaps menopause is more than just a cluster of symptoms, but rather something vast and deep for us to experience. Darcey is also the author of Easter Everywhere and five novels: Sister Golden Hair, Milk, Jesus Saves, Suicide Blonde, and Up Through the Water. https://www.darceysteinke.com/index.html Flash Count Diary is available on Amazon or at your local book store.

tl;dr Darcey Steinke on menopause, changing bodies, & a new way forward   MENOPAUSE! It's a thing loads of us go through that's fraught with misinformation, silence, shame, and PATRIARCHY.   So, this week, I'm chatting with author Darcey Steinke about her new book, "Flash Count Diary: Menopause and the Vindication of Natural Life". I had a chance to read the book and chat about it with some friends in a queer elders book club I'm in.   Darcey and I dive into the ways menopause is vilified by the modern medical industrial complex, the stories we don't have, and what she discovered along the way around pleasure, sex, and changing bodies.   We acknowledge that this episode is cis and hetero centric as it's a largely about Darcey's memoir. If you're looking for some resources for other kinds of bodies and genders, head to dawnserra.com/ep287 for a few to check out.   You can grab "Flash Count Diary" wherever books are sold. Patreons, don't miss my bonus chat with Darcey just for you! You'll hear a moving story of how and why Darcey found inspiration in killer whales as she moved through menopause and what we can learn about changing bodies from these fierce mammals. It was one of my favorite parts of the book, too! The bonus is for folks who support at $3 per month and above, and you can hear it at patreon.com/sgrpodcast.   Have questions of your own you'd like featured on the show? The only two creatures on earth that go through menopause are human women and female killer whales. This esoteric fact became a strange point of fascination as author Darcey Steinke grappled with her own hard experiences with menopause—first came hot flashes, then insomnia, then depression. Steinke struggled to understand what was happening to her, and all her research slammed her up against a culture of silence and sexism. To offer a guiding hand to understanding menopause in a complex, spiritual, and intellectually engaged way, Steinke joins us at Town Hall in conversation with marine biologist Dr. Deborah Giles to share thoughts on Flash Count Diary, Steinke’s powerful exploration into aspects of menopause that have rarely been written about. She delves into the changing gender landscape brought on by reduced levels of hormones, the actualities of transforming desires, and the realities of prejudice against older women. Steinke reveals menopausal insights from throughout history: how seventeenth century women who had hot flashes in front of others could be accused of being witches, that the model of Marcel Duchamp’s famous Étant donnés was a post-reproductive woman, and that seeing whales in the wild can lead to orcagasms. Listen in with Steinke and Giles for an honest, feminist story about the intimations of mortality that menopause signals—and her argument for the ascendency, beauty, and power of the post-reproductive years in women’s lives. Darcey Steinke is the author of the memoir Easter Everywhere and the novels Milk, Jesus Saves, Suicide Blonde, Up Through the Water, and Sister Golden Hair. With Rick Moody, she edited Joyful Noise: The New Testament Revisited. Her books have been translated into ten languages, and her nonfiction has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Boston Review, Vogue, Spin, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and The Guardian. Dr. Deborah Giles received her PhD from the University of California Davis in 2014. Her master’s thesis and PhD dissertation both focused on the federally listed southern resident killer whales. Formerly the research director at the Center for Whale Research, she is currently a resident scientist and lecturer at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Labs, where she teaches Marine Mammals of the Salish Sea and Marine Biology. Recorded live in The Forum at Town Hall Seattle on July 8, 2019.
