In this special Flashback Friday episode, I'm revisiting a conversation I had with my long-time friend and the founder of Zen Habits, Leo Babauta. This episode offers timeless insights into slowing down, living intentionally, and focusing on what truly matters. In 2024, Leo and I caught up to reflect on how much – or how little – has changed since our initial conversation. His wisdom and practices remain as relevant today as they were back then.If you're not familiar with Zen Habits, it's a blog that has stood the test of time. Over the years, Leo has shifted focus from pure productivity to a more holistic and sustainable approach to living. In this episode, we explore how those philosophies have evolved and deepened, and how they continue to serve us both personally and professionally.Key Discussion Points The importance of slowing down and focusing on what truly matters in life and work How Leo manages his time with a large family and multiple projects without burning out The power of consistency versus sustainability in daily habits How Zen Habits has evolved as Leo's life has changed, but the core principles remain the same Leo's approach to balancing digital tools and paper for organization The difference between productivity as efficiency and productivity as aligning intention and attention As always, it's a pleasure to share these insights from my conversation with Leo. I've found that many of the lessons we discussed back in 2011 continue to resonate, especially as the pace of life and work increases. I hope you find these reflections valuable and that they inspire you to slow down and focus on what truly matters. Leo Bernstein CEO and co-founder of LineSlip Solutions, talks about funding his MVP, acquiring the first customers, and moving from zero to product-market fit. Listen to the podcast for more details.   LineSlip Solutions leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to obtain and design insurance data to automate essential tasks and control data vital to corporate insurance companies and commercial insurance brokers. He talks to Geordie about his journey in the entrepreneurship world.   What You'll Learn What is structured data? How Leo went about analyzing the market and building his MVP Why many insurance businesses were unwilling to adopt technology What's the initial problem that Leo and his team were trying to solve? How Leo started the company Challenges Leo faced while searching for a CTO Why Leo decided to adopt full-time online operations When did Leo realize product-market fit? Importance of marketing and creating brand awareness  In this Episode:  The creation of commercial insurance has been a manual process in many companies for many years. Leo says he made this discovery when he was a real estate investor responsible for acquiring commercial insurance for the company's properties. Nothing could have prepared him for how manual the entire process was. He would later spend close to one year wondering and interacting with people in the insurance industry. During that time, Leo realized that many players in the insurance industry struggled with the manual operations problem. Commercial insurance companies dealt with structured data without treating it as structured data. Leo explains the meaning of structured data in this podcast.   Leo narrates the story of how he had attended an insurance renewal meeting and sought to review a few proposals from the carriers. During discussions with his broker, he (the broker) suggested a particular package and Leo sought to see the available alternatives. Unfortunately, the broker could not do so because he could not access the data. Leo found that strange, especially coming from a data-driven industry. Listen to the podcast for the discussion Leo had with the agent and how thought-provoking it turned out to be for him.  Leo would later spend lots of time talking to people in the insurance industry and trying to understand why the problem existed in the first place. He could not figure out why the data-driven sector could not access its data. Later on, Leo discovered the insurance industry had good reasons for that. He explains in the podcast. Leo would later understand why the problem existed, and he explains in the podcast.   While on his inquiry process, Leo met different people, one of whom he had known through a close friend. He ended up meeting another person who happened to be a senior call producer at Marsh McLennan who introduced him to someone at AIG. The team of three brainstormed the problem and tried to figure out whether technology could or could not fix some of these problems. Leo convinced his team that technology could help solve the issues. Apart from Leo, his colleagues were technically co-founders even though they did not join the company full time.   In 2018, Leo met Glen, someone he knew socially through his real estate partner. Through their interaction, Glen, an insurance guy, told Leo about a problem he was facing. It turned out that one of Glen's largest customers wanted to see the entire commercial insurance data of their portfolio companies. Leo explains the problem comprehensively, and you cannot afford to miss this part of the podcast.  Leo knew he could help Glen, and he told him so. Listen to the podcast to understand how Leo helped Glen fulfill his customer's demands and how he would later become one of his biggest customers. He also discusses industry lines of business. What are they? Get extensive details from the podcast. Leo talks about the initial idea the team had. This is a comprehensive section that requires your total concentration.   Leo and his team spend a long time trying to figure things out. If he was to do it all over again, Leo says he would have gone full-time from the beginning. His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is not to spend lots of capital before realizing product-market fit. Leo reiterates the importance of focus for entrepreneurs looking to succeed in the business industry. Leo says recruiting experts from the industry is the best thing he has ever done.  Resources LineSlip Solutions Leo Bernstein LinkedIn LineSlip Solutions LinkedIn

Today’s podcast features performance coach and breathing specialist, Leo Ryan. Leo is the founder of Innate-Strength.com. He has studied athletic training, health and breathing since he healed himself of asthma in 2004. Leo has achieved a prolific amount of education in human performance and breathwork.  He has attained multiple diplomas and certificates from many elite personal training, physical therapy and breathing schools including Dip. Buteyko Method, Wim Hof Instructor, Oxygen Advantage Master Instructor, Fascial Stretch Therapist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Pilates teacher. Leo’s love and experience for health and physical performance has seen him research more than 70 breathing techniques, mentor with coaches to Olympians, UFC Fighters and World Champions. Breathing is truly on the top of the totem pole when it comes to our day to day health and well-being (we take around 20,000 breaths per day).  It has a massive impact on our mental state, as well as the physiology of the body, in addition to its implications for athletic performance.  We can run longer, recover faster, and gain enhanced mind-body states through simple breathing drills, as well as becoming more educated on the topic. Today’s show was longer than average, largely because the concept of performance breathing is so expansive, and we as a coaching community, generally don’t approach it in much depth.  Often times we are just told to belly breathe, or nose breathe, and leave it at that.  In this show, Leo covers all aspects of our breath, including nose breathing versus mouth breathing for performance, breathing as a readiness assessment, performance versus recovery breathing, diaphragm release techniques, and much more (including his experience in running a marathon, and recovering from it extremely well, despite ZERO run training).  This is yet another “staple” episode, as it truly covers this intersection of health, well-being, and athlete performance in the topic of the breath. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Do you wash your fruit? In this episode, Leo and I talk about why he doesn't wash his fruit, how he got mixed up in a carjacking, and Leo gives loads of insight to eating healthy and living our best lives. A Chicago native, Leo Flowers quickly worked his way into major comedy clubs and colleges across the country. His delivery has been described as "smooth and deliberate." No two shows are ever alike, as he's always attacking the day's issues and revealing personal anecdotes. Infusing stand up with storytelling, Flowers captivates audiences of all demographics. Recently, Flowers appeared on Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen, was a runner-up in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and was a finalist in the 2011 Stand Up for Diversity competition. He has toured on the Shaved and Depraved Comedy Tour, and hosted both MTV's "Sports Blender" and Starz "Staan' 'Dup," and was featured on "Last Call from Carson Daly," on NBC!! Leo eats for his blood type (type B). He never liked candy or ice cream; Leo always wants meat and potatoes. Leo's mom kept the fridge stocked with food – they would eat barbeque wings, tacos, pizza, you name it. Candy was nothing! Despite being health-conscious, he wasn't making other healthy life decisions. For instance, he was arrested for carjacking before his senior year of high school. Also, Leo doesn't wash the fruit when he gets it – you can't be too clean. Leo dives deep into his football career and how he realized he wouldn't be going pro. The guys who go pro are built for the NFL. We talk about how people want to touch men with muscles. Leo even had an inclination to touch a pregnant person on a cruise, luckily, he contained himself. I tell a story about kissing my niece on the face. It's part of our DNA to touch and make sense of the world around us. Plus, there's a lot of excitement when you see a baby. Leo says we shouldn't demonize ourselves when we kiss babies. Later, we talk about the feud between life coaches and therapists. Life coaches don't have any oversight. People shouldn't be treating a life coach like their therapist. As a counselor, Leo said it was too restrictive. When people go to him for depression and anxiety, he knows there is a movement aspect to it. Plus, there's a nutritional ingredient involved—people who are depressed need to consider lots of aspects of their life. Leo needed to step back from counseling to inform himself and guide his clients on nutrition and exercise. There are so many contributing factors to depression. Please stay tuned as we talk about the importance of sleep, why women are uncomfortable with Leo's nutrition, and Leo advises someone who wants to start feeling healthy. Leo Polovets is a General Partner @ Susa Ventures, one of the valley's leading early-stage seed funds with a portfolio including the likes of Flexport, Robinhood, Lendup, Qadium, Rigetti, the list goes on. As for Leo, prior to joining the world of VC, he started his career as the second non-founding engineer at LinkedIn. After two years at LinkedIn, Leo spent 3 years at Google, largely working on real-time payment fraud detection. Finally, his last stop pre-Susa involved spending 4 years at Factual, a location data platform. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Leo made his way into the world of VC from being the 2nd non-founding engineer at LinkedIn? 2.) Why does Leo believe that the hailed "warm intro" is actually dumb? What are the biggest drawbacks to this being commonplace in our ecosystem? What does Leo believe the mindset of investors should be instead? How does Leo filter through cold inbound? What are the 4 elements Leo looks for in all inbound? What can founders do to really make them stand out? 3.) Leo has previously heavily emphasised the importance of moats, how does Leo define moats and defensibility? When do founders have to think about moat building? Pre-product? Pre-launch? Pre-scaling? What questions suggest that a founders mindset is heavily oriented to moat building? With the majority of incumbents being usurped by platform shifts, does that not render moats significantly futile in the long term? 4.) What does Leo believe is the right way for investors to pass on an opportunity and communicate that to founders? What is wrong with the current way many do it? How does Leo present his opinion without getting into an argument with the founder on reasoning? What feedback has Leo been given from founders that has changed the way he thinks about being an investor? 5.) Controversial capitals Round: Ownerships is built on first check? Agree or disagree and why? Whether it is a $6m, $8m or $12m, if it is at seed, it is so early that price really does not matter so much? Agree or disagree and why? There is no point VCs spending their time with struggling companies in the portfolio. At best they return cents on the dollar. Only work with the outperformers to drive returns. Agree or disagree and why? (Photo courtesy of Dr. Leo Pang, and used with permission.) The Mynt Sdeno robot is very cute.  But it's also seriously "smart". Dr. Leo Pang, founder of Santa Clara-based artificial intelligence technology company Slightech, designed Mynt Sdeno to interact with its surroundings, and with multiple users. Through AI, Leo and his team have created the robot to "learn" as it performs tasks, and to store information. At Sensors Expo and Conference 2018, in San Jose in June, the robot was a standout favorite on the show floor. Mynt Sdeno, which debuted at CES 2016, operates on Slightech's proprietary software, which allows it to "see" where it's going.   Meanwhile, the robot is interacting with humans, distinguishing faces and performing tasks in real time. Facial recognition software allows the robot to verify identities.  Meanwhile, Mynt Sdeno's deep learning engine allows it to adapt to specific applications, such as working in a store, museum or office. Leo shared the story of Mynt Sdeno (including a cautionary tale that's enough to scare any innovator who's ever had to transport a special product to a show!), explained how the robot works and offered a preview of what's next. On this edition of Over Coffee® you will hear: How Leo first became interested in robotics; His journey, from there to the creation of the Mynt Sdeno robot; How the process worked, as he and his team designed the robot in 2014; A travel story that just might have you holding your breath!; How the Mynt Sdeno robot works in a customer-service setting, such as a small business; Some of the biggest challenges Leo and his team discovered, in creating Mynt Sdeno to operate with artificial intelligence in a new environment; What's next, for the Mynt Sdeno robot; And, a fantastic resource (on which you can design your own robot or robot application) available through Slightech! Plus--Leo's favorite experience, when he brought the robot into his home (hint: he may now have a future roboticist-in-training!).

He is an angel investor in over a dozen companies, including DataFox, Boomtrain, Lumoid, and Momentum Machines. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Leo made the transition from the world of operations with LinkedIn to co-founding Susa Ventures? 2.) How does Leo evaluate the supposed success that comes from investing with a contrarian mindset? This that the only way? Is investing merely a game of access without picking? 3.) If one is to follow the crowd, there is often a high price? What is Leo's approach to valuation sensitivity? At what stage does price become unreasonable? How does Leo instill a sense of disciple and rigor in maintaining this mindset? 4.) How does Leo react to founders who raise large sums of capital on slowly increasing caps? How central should dilution be to the mindset of founders when raising? 5.) Why does Leo think there is very little valuable to be gained from enaging in technical due diligence at seed?
