In this Short, John likens throwing a pool party to building soil microbial populations. Just like a successful pool party needs the right environment with food, drinks, and a crowd, building a healthy soil ecosystem requires appropriate soil conditions, nutrients, and a diverse microbial community. John emphasizes the importance of "keystone species" which are essential microbial species that attract and support a larger community, similar to inviting a few socially connected individuals to a party to attract more guests. He also highlights the role of plants in introducing a wide variety of microbes to the soil, advocating for diverse plant species to create robust and resilient soil ecosystems. John Kempf — founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA), a regenerative agronomy company started back in 2006 to share the knowledge, tools, and systems that regenerate farm profitability, soil health, and plant health, all while reducing the need for fertilizers and pesticides.Under John's leadership, AEA has grown to be trusted by over 10,000 growers across the world to deliver exceptional yield and quality improvement results on over 4 million collective acres of fruit, nut, vegetable, and broad acre crops all while profitably generating over $20mm in revenue last year and raising over $2.5 million in crowdfunding. From a recognition that our existing food system is fundamentally broken, John's vision is one that agriculture — the source of so many challenges in our world today — has the capacity to be the solution to those very challenges, where the process of growing food regenerates land, revitalizes rural communities, produces food that improves our health, and leads to farming landscapes that are beautiful, vibrant and clean. In addition to building AEA, John is also the host of the Regenerative Agriculture podcast — one of the leading agriculture podcasts in the country, with millions of downloads— where he interviews leading farmers and scientists on the practices and science that accelerate the healing of soil, crops, livestock, and our relationship to land. It's hard not to be inspired after meeting with John — he is clearly pushing the envelope of what is possible and necessary — unaccepting of the status quo and limitations of conventional agriculture; his passion and enthusiasm are infectious and his progress with AEA is more than compelling. This was such a fun and educational conversation — from unpacking the larger concept of regenerative agriculture to hearing about the influence of his Amish upbringing and much more.-----LINKS:https://johnkempf.com/https://advancingecoag.com/https://regenerativeagriculturepodcast.com/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRApdrU3BA0Pzo6MNWTD2jghttps://www.instagram.com/advancingecoag/-----SPONSORS: John Carroll University Boler College of Business || Impact Architects & NinetyJohn Carroll University Boler College of Business: https://business.jcu.edu/ As we've heard time and time again from entrepreneurs on Lay of The Land — many of whom are proud alumni of John Carroll University — success in this ever-changing world of business requires a dynamic and innovative mindset, deep understanding of emerging technology and systems, strong ethics, leadership prowess, acute business acumen… all qualities nurtured through the Boler College of Business! With 4 different MBA programs of study — spanning Professional, Online, Hybrid, and 1-Year-Flexible — The Boler College of Business provides flexible timelines and various class structures for each MBA Track — including online, in-person, hybrid and asynchronous — to offer the most effective options for you, in addition to the ability to participate in an elective International Study Tour, providing unparalleled opportunities to expand your global business knowledge by networking with local companies overseas and experiencing a new culture. The career impact of a Boler MBA is formative and will help prepare you for this future of business and get more out of your career. My guest today needs no introduction if you've been paying attention to the regen ag scene in the last decade, but just in case you're new to this topic and community let me catch you up to speed John Kempf is an entrepreneur, speaker, podcast host and teacher. He is passionate about the potential of well managed agriculture ecosystems to reverse ecological degradation. It is John's mission to have these regenerative models of agriculture management become the mainstream globally by 2040. In addition to being a grower, John is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture, Crop Health Labs, Ozadia, and the Regenerative Agriculture Academy. He hosts the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, where he interviews top growers and scientists about the principles and practice of implementing regenerative agriculture on a large scale. I had John on the show twice now and in the first conversation I didn't know much about him or his work and so we covered many of the softball questions about things like the definition of regen ag and its importance in a new ecological food system. Since then I've become an avid listener of his podcast and have a much better understanding of just how important his work and that of his companies have become in leading the way in this scene. As a result I wanted to explore some of the deeper questions that very few people have enough of an overview of this movement to be able to see, and that's exactly what we cover in this session. Together John and I navigate where regen ag is in this current moment and the drivers that have brought it this far. John reflects on the patterns and learnings from the vast clientele of AEA about the commonalities and characteristics of successful farmers who've transitioned to regenerative management as well as those of the coaches and consultants that are effective in assisting them in their journeys. We also look into the influences outside of farming directly, the external factors that set boundaries on producers from the large food companies, retail outlets, commodities trade, investors, and politicians that wield so much power. Since John's work is already one of my go-to sources for information on the newest innovations and state of progress for regen ag, it was a unique pleasure to be able to gain insight into his vantage point and strategy on how to bring this movement forward further.

Take regenerative agriculture, which most define by the ability to improve soil and sequester carbon. But these are outcomes, even by-products, not the complete definition of regenerative, says John Kempf. John is a leading crop health consultant and the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture. He designs innovative soil and plant management systems to help growers realize the benefits of regenerative transition right away. We talk about what it means to be regenerative, the results they've seen from working with over 10,000 farmers across 4M acres, why they've launched an equity crowdfunding campaign and how we can all start to look at agricultural problems and solutions through a more regenerative lens.A quick bio on John: John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture, a plant nutrition and biostimulants consulting company. John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture which is the leading company in regenerative agriculture today. Later in the show I share a plant sap analysis test I did on my Crimson Beefsteak Tomato crop and share how that information helped me tune my soil and plant nutrition in on a much better level. I actually go through the test results and discuss all the pieces of it. Soul Soil: Where Agriculture and Spirit Intersect with Brooke Kornegay
“Creation isn’t something that happened all at once, a long time ago…creation is something that happens every day, and humans are meant to be stewards of this creation instead of dominating it. We are co—creators of this reality every day, and as such, we need to learn to work with natural systems instead of fighting them. The degree of our success as a society is going to be in direct correlation with our ability to adopt this ‘heartset’.” John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture, a plant nutrition and biostimulant consulting company. A top expert in the field of biological and regenerative farming, John founded AEA in 2006 to help fellow farmers by providing the education, tools, and strategies that will have a global effect on the food supply and those who are growing that supply. John is the host of the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, where he interviews top scientists and growers about the science and principles of implementing regenerative agriculture on a large scale. “Change doesn’t happen in the soil, change doesn’t happen with plants, change occurs within your heart and your mind. The only difference between a farm that is doing extraordinarily well and one that is not, is in the decisions and choices that the farm manager makes.” In this episode… Events that led John to explore alternatives to the conventional agriculture model Regenerative agriculture can and should deliver three things: disease and pest-resistant plants, plants that transfer their immunity to the people and animals that consume them, and vibrant, healthy soils that produce organic matter and sequester carbon. The dominating, war-like mentality in contemporary large-scale agriculture that is embraced by big agribusiness The modern fallacy that we need genetically modified organisms, pesticides, and fertilizers to “feed the world” and the overwhelming evidence that regenerative agroecosystems outperform and outyield modern agricultural systems Why “sustainable agriculture” isn’t enough for our current needs and goals The perspective shift that differentiates modern agronomy from regenerative agriculture with regard to plant nutrition Scientific research is now demonstrating that soil biology has more impact on soil and crop health than soil chemistry Up to 70% of a plant’s photosynthate production can be sent out through the roots to feed soil biology, and the more efficient that process becomes, the more exudates are released in the rhizosphere…so the fastest way to build healthy soil is to grown healthy plants Since the mid 1800s, prominent figures have concluded that soils have been degraded to the point that they are no longer able to support the physical, mental and spiritual potential of humans The world needs us to shift from the role of dominating and fighting natural systems to becoming co-creators working with these systems Openness, awareness, and desire will facilitate connection with this stewardship perspective Resources Nutrition and Your Mind by George Watson The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs by Joel Salatin johnkempf.com Advancing Eco Agriculture The Regenerative Agriculture Podcast regen.ag Academy
https://www.advancingecoag.com/about (https://www.advancingecoag.com/about) So excited because my guest today has this amazing green future grower story I KNOW listeners are going to absolutely love! So if you’re driving don’t worry I’ll make awesome SHOWNOTES because I know we are going to have a million golden seeds dropped with this amazing interview. CEO of Advancing Ego Agriculture (https://www.advancingecoag.com) , John Kempf is on a mission to “produce healthier soil, stronger crops, and consistently higher yields!”What I love about his story is how he started out and I can’t wait for you to hear it too! His passion for growing healthy soil and healthy plants for profit is contagious! Tell us a little about yourself.I love what I do I have fun! I grew up in a family vegetable farm in snow-belt south of Lake Erie Small scale market ~ fruits and veggies for wholesale markets early 2000s we had 3 consecutive years intense disease we lost majority of crops to a variety of disease and insects In the 3rd year in 2004, we observed that plants which were grown on healthy soilbetter biology were very disease and insect resistant cantaloupe resistant to powdery mildew that was side by side soil with he previous pesticide exposure for the prior decade of growing vegetables we lost the majority of the crop to powdery mildew, 80% of leaves The new soil didn’t have pesticide exposure didn't have any powdery mildew. Not 5-10% you couldn't find any! ZERO! There was a knifelike effect right down the field. really a major turning point what was the difference between those two plants resistant to powdery mildew when the next plant 2 feet away was susceptible. asking that question and the things I learned plant science and agronomy from asking that question were what led to founding Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA) (https://www.advancingecoag.com) in 2006 AEA (https://www.advancingecoag.com) Was the idea that we can grow plants that are completely resistant to diseases and insects based on how we manage nutrition.where we identified plants that are healthy not only are they resistant to diseases and insects but they regenerate soil health at the same timeprocess of this journey I was fortunate to be guided by USDA experts land grant universities all over the world realized this exceptional info that very wise people had was scattered all over the place difficult to find not recorded at all some experiences were not being transferred Led me to starting the Regenerative Ag Podcast (http://regenerativeagriculturepodcast.com/) with the intention and goal of interviewing leading farmers leading scientists sharing their information with other professional agronomists and growers who wanted to produce in a regenerative agriculture context!Tell me about your first gardening experience?I grew up even from before I remember, we always grew our own food. appreciate it as an adult There were many years my parents purchased salt and pepper and spices and that was just about it maple syrup honey stevia sweeteners grew many of our own herbs 2 farmed ponds where we raised fish raised poultry grass fed beef family dairy cow grew a large garden small orchard Lived an incredibly rich life from a food quality perspectiveMy parents started growing vegetables commercially in 1994, so I was still very young My earliest memories are working out in the fields harvesting fruits and vegetables. Awesome! I love millennials. I thought you were older then that. So you have this amazing journey. I am curious it seems like you almost have this test plot like at Rodale's, how did you have this plot without chemicals and the other part was getting... Support this podcast
