In this episode we speak with Kish Johnson from Advancing Eco Agriculture about how data-driven tools like SAP analysis and foliar sprays are transforming regenerative farming. Kish shares how farms are eliminating pests and diseases through optimized plant nutrition and improved photosynthesis. The conversation dives into the connection between soil biology, profitability, and nutrient density. Kish also addresses skepticism around ag “products” and offers a humble, science-based approach to farm improvement. The episode wraps with news of a research partnership between AEA and the Market Gardener Institute to adapt these tools for small-scale growers.SponsorsTessier: Use promo code MGI10 for 10% off and free shipping on your first purchase for the Eastern North American regions Farmhand: CSA farmers can set up a complimentary 1:1 strategy session with founder Ari at Timestamps[8:37] The hopeful message of regenerative agriculture[12:17] Understanding the economic “J curve” in farming transitions[19:08] What Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA) actually does for farmers[24:23] Fighting orchard disease with SAP analysis[27:17] Why SAP analysis is like a blood test for plants[31:04] The power of foliar sprays for nutrient uptake[43:27] Increasing photosynthesis for crop resilience and yield[48:23] Nutrient corrections that boost photosynthesis[52:01] The role of seed inoculants and microbial colonization[1:04:16] Insect pressure and the myth of “holes mean healthy”[1:06:00] How protein synthesis deters aphids[1:13:47] Giving farmers real decision-making power through data[1:21:04] Collaboration between AEA and the Market Gardener Institute[1:28:58] Making nutrient density measurable and marketable[1:33:59] “There's no such thing as cheap food” – nutrient density and health[1:36:20] The most common global farming issue Kish observesLinks/ResourcesMarket Gardener Institute: https://themarketgardener.com/ Masterclass: https://themarketgardener.com/courses/the-market-gardener-masterclass/ Newsletter: https://themarketgardener.com/newsletterBlog: https://themarketgardener.com/blog Books: https://themarketgardener.com/booksGrowers & Co: https://growers.co/Heirloom: https://heirloom.ag/The Old Mill: https://www.espaceoldmill.com/en/Follow UsWebsite: http://themarketgardener.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/marketgardenerinstitute Instagram: http://instagram.com/themarketgardeners Guest Social Media LinksAdvancing Eco Agriculture:Website: https://advancingecoag.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/advancingecoag/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/advancingecoag/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRApdrU3BA0Pzo6MNWTD2jg Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/advancingecoag Podcast: https://regenerativeagriculturepodcast.com/ JM:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeanmartinfortierFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jeanmartinfortier

The only response that reduces our vulnerability is self-reliance.When Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote his famous essay Self-Reliance in 1841, the economy was localized and households supplied many of their own essentials. In our hyper-globalized economy, we're dependent on distant sources for our essentials.Emerson defined self-reliance as being our best selves—thinking for ourselves rather than following the conventional path. Self-reliance in the 21st century means reducing our dependency on fragile supply chains and becoming producers as well as consumers.Self-reliance is often confused with self-supporting (making enough money to support yourself) and self-sufficiency—the equivalent of Thoreau's a cabin on Walden Pond. But self-reliance in the 21st century isn't about piling up money or a cabin in the woods; it's about humanity's most successful innovation: cooperating with trustworthy others in productive networks. This book explores the mindset of self-reliance and 18 principles that advance self-reliance in the 21st century. #AbrahamMaslows #AdamSmithsWealth #CheapEnergy #CorporateAmerica #Currencies #Degrowth #DependencyChains #Depletion #Fragility #GDP #GlobalCrisisNationalRenewal #Globalization #GrossDomesticProductGDP #Hyperglobalization #LandfillEconomy #NateHagens #NutshellEnergy #Reshoring #SelfReliance #Specialization #ThomasThwaites #ToasterProject #WorldTradeOrganizationWTO #RussellNewton #NewtonMG #Self-Relianceinthe21stCenturyBy #Self-RelianceThenAndNow

As farmers contemplate thousands of hectares under water, the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology reports that Autumn rainfall, between September and November for the UK last year was 22% above average, followed by a December which saw 70% above average rainfall for central & northern England and eastern Scotland. The government's announced help is available for flooded businesses and properties but farmers cannot insure against flooded crops and some have said they'll stop growing food on land that's repeatedly flooded. We speak to an expert about how farmers and government can better deal with flooding in the future. All week we're exploring the topic of animal feed. Today we hear from a farmer who's invested £30,000 in cages to protect his cattle feed from starlings. Giant flocks of the birds have been eating the grain Bryn Jones near Oswestry feeds his dairy herd. He estimates it's already saving him tens of thousands of pounds in lost feed and is helping protect his herd from disease - and improving the milk yield of his cows.We often hear that people want their food to be welfare friendly, sustainably produced and farmers to be paid fairly for it. Last year the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, or FFCC, launched a citizens' panel made up of a representative cross-section of the public, to hear what they want from government policy, to make healthy food available to all. We speak to Guy Singh-Watson, founder of the organic veg food box company Riverford, and Sue Pritchard, Chief Executive of FFCC, which carried out the survey. When a delegate stood up and said to the audience “I just can't understand why a strategy of cheap food could ever be wrong,” at a 1995 Common Agricultural Policy conference no one questioned the wisdom of this statement. Almost 30 years later, this and other well ingrained paradigms are being re-evaluated. The big questions are whether cheap food is sufficiently valued by our society and how much does cheap food drive increased food waste. Current USDA estimates are that between 30-40% of food is wasted. This is a radicle change from only one generation ago where all table scraps and leftovers that were not eaten where either fed to pigs, chickens or even the household pets. Mary Shelman's insight and thinking on our food and agricultural systems stems as much from her time leading the Agribusiness Program at Harvard Business School and leading the development and implementation of Ireland's nations food sustainability programme, Origin Green, as it does from growing up in rural Kentucky and spending time with local farmers. We all know the challenges that have emerged around the urban rural divide. What is less discussed in the generational challenges and opportunities facing our societies around food and agriculture. Around 70% of young people today suffer from climate anxiety. Bringing young people into the conversation and leveraging their passions and concerns must become a key component of any food sustainability program. I recently caught up with Mary to hear more about her work. You can listen to his conversation here.

Pat McCormack President of the ICMSA said that much of the concerns being expressed around the surge in food prices were because consumers and corporate retailers had become used to simply passing their own financial preferences backwards onto the farmer primary-producer. He joined Fran on the show to discuss.

If consumers are outraged when produce costs more, what impact does this have on the farming, hospitality and food donation industries?
Bob Quinn is a scientist, farmer, out-of-the-box thinker and savvy businessman who has dedicated his entire career to regenerating food systems and educating the public on the connection between land and soil preservation, nutritious food, robust rural communities and human health. With a PhD in Plant Biochemistry from University of California Davis, Bob returned to his hometown of Big Sandy, Montana—a population of 600 people—where he took over the family farm and was among the first farmers in Montana to go organic. He served on the National Board of U.S. Department of Ag to create a USDA organic standard, started a grain cleaning plant, flour mill and Montana's first wind farm. His book, Grain by Grain with Liz Carlisle, lays out the recent history of farming in the United States, how the rise of “Big Ag” has pushed small farms out of business and turned rural communities across the country into ghost towns. In a rush to produce higher yields to keep up with the small margins of the global commodity market, farmers have drowned their soil and crops in synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides that have lasting consequences for the land and the people who eat the end products. What Bob has done to organize organic systems and revive ancient grains is incredible. In 1988, he converted his entire 2,400 acre farm to organic and hasn't looked back. Over five decades, he started several projects and businesses: Kamut International, a company specializing in organic Kamut khorasan wheat; Montana Flour and Grain, which processes his grains into flour for bakeries, pasta makers and distributors; Big Sandy Organics; and The Oil Barn, an operation that presses organically-grown safflower into cooking oil then returns the used oil to his farm to replace diesel fuel.In this conversation, he makes the case for eating ancient wheat varieties versus modern wheat, which has been continuously bred for high yields, at the detriment of nutrition, diversity and flavor. We discuss the research that his team has carried out in Italy among patients with diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome and heart disease, and how switching to a diet of Kamut in place of conventionally-grown modern wheat lowered inflammation, cholesterol, cytokines and other markers that lead to chronic illness. Ancient wheat could be part of the answer for the 12-20% of people who experience symptoms of gluten sensitivity or intolerance. This talk scratches the surface of the high cost of cheap food, but my hope is that it will help you rethink our industrial agriculture system, choose organically-grown foods, experiment with ancient wheat varieties like Einkorn, farro and Kamut, and begin to understand why we can't talk about farming without talking about human health and planetary healthy. The three are inextricably linked, and if we don't start to make different choices, we're just continuing the race to the bottom.Support the show

Cheap nature, cheap money, cheap work, cheap care, cheap food, cheap energy, and cheap lives. According to Raj Patel, those seven things are necessary for the survival of capitalism. And, he argues, they are running out. He discusses how the food system illustrates the need for those inputs and why capitalism's days are numbered.
