A dark, cold morning in February 2025. Hundreds are filing into the Museum of the Bible - evangelical leaders, gospel singers, and over 30 members of Congress including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. They've gathered just three blocks from the US Capitol for an annual event of fervent prayer about what they see as America's most pressing problems. Meanwhile, journalist Ben Lewis explores how an institution that once dreamed of becoming a centre for biblical scholarship has transformed after losing some 17,000 artefacts - nearly 40% of its entire collection. Through revealing interviews with museum officials and its critics, Ben traces the extraordinary journey of the Museum of the Bible - from the Green family's ambitions to make Washington, DC a centre for biblical scholarship, to the devastating revelations of forged Dead Sea Scrolls fragments and thousands of problematically sourced artefacts. Yet despite these setbacks, the museum has found new purpose as a convening space for a movement that wants to make evangelical protestantism the moving spirit of America's future. As Ben explores exhibits that present a selective view of religious and American history, he discovers how the museum bridges faith and politics. While its staff insist there's no religious agenda, events hosted within its walls blend prayer with political messaging. Through conversations with scholar Roberta Mazza and journalist Katherine Stewart, Ben examines how museums shape our understanding of history through what they choose to display - and what they leave out. This final episode reveals how the Museum of the Bible has quietly evolved into something more significant than just a repository of ancient artefacts - a platform for reimagining America's past to shape its future.Presented by Ben Lewis Produced by Martha Owen Series producer: Clem Hitchcock Executive producers: Philip Abrams and Jago Lee Story editor: Andrew Dickson Sound design by Richard Courtice Original music by Max de Wardener Additional sound effects courtesy of FreesoundA TellTale production for BBC Radio 4

Pastor/Dr. David Murphy continues our study on Paul's teaching for believers to be subject to civil authorities. Paul wants believers to understand the role of government and the believer's responsibility. Citizens owe the government a great debt for their services, such as: running water, law and order, roads and bridges, defense against enemies, electricity, garbage disposal, transportation systems, health services, social security, medical benefits, and education. Civil government is necessary in a fallen world with people who are sinful in nature. We'll see examples of a world without government after the Fall, during for the 1,000 year period after the Flood, and the period of Judges. We'll then quickly review the 7 reasons Christians should submit to government.

Pastor/Dr. David Murphy shows us that civil disobedience is sometimes required and shows us several Biblical examples of this: the Jewish slaves in Exodus 1 mandated to kill baby boys, the 4 Hebrew boys captive in Babylon and their response regarding dietary laws, the 3 boys in Daniel required to bow to the golden image and thrown into the fiery furnace, Daniel restricted from praying and thrown into the lion's den, the disciples in Acts 4 and 5 who were told to stop preaching the message of Jesus Christ, and Paul who was beaten and imprisoned publicly in Acts 16 and took his legal right. We'll also see the 7 reasons listed in Romans 13 that we should obey civil authority: 1) Government is by divine decree, 2) Resistance to the government is rebellion against God, 3) Those who resist will be punished, 4) Government is there to restrain evil, 5) Government is to promote the good, 6) Rulers are empowered by God to inflict punishment upon those who disobey, and 7) Government should be obeyed for conscience's sake.

Pastor/Dr. David Murphy shows us that dealing with human government and civil authority is becoming a grave concern as the government is imposing and crushing freedom and liberties in the name of democracy. The global agenda to destroy Christianity and the Bible is 1-advocacy of unrestrained sexual freedom, 2-redefinition of the family, 3-control of the educational system, 4-the mantra to promote democratic ideal of inclusion, 5-create new legal language of hate speech, and 6-legislation of economic sanction and forced compliance. But Paul still points out that the State is an institution ordained by God. In verses 1-2, Paul gives us an injunction to "let every soul be subject unto the higher power", an explanation why to follow that injunction, and a conclusion. Today, we'll see the features of the injunction as: emphatic, inclusive, and specific.

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast Rebecca and Landon have a fascinating discussion with Brandon Crockett and Alex Criddle about their new proof of concept project "EntheoMagus," a 40-minute documentary delving into the possibility that Joseph Smith and the early Mormons were using psychedelic sacraments.as a means to connect with the divine. This idea is gaining momentum as the mainstream learns more about plant medicines and their effects. Brandon and Alex present a compelling argument for the use of herbs and plants to facilitate group guided vision experiences as well as personal visions as described in early Mormonism. Part 1 of Episode 150! Yay!! And now for something completely different. This episode is a bit of a departure from our regular show. We invite Alex Criddle and Cody Noconi, researchers into the psychedelic origins of Mormonism, to respond to the recent debate on the Mormon Book Reviews channel between ourselves and Mormon apologist, Brian Hales. Brian attempts to provide the apologetic response to the theory that Joseph Smith utilized psychedelics (entheogens) in the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to facilitate visionary experiences for the early Saints. Disinformation requires much greater effort than simply stating information so we do our best to debunk his debunking (rebunk the theory?). This one is a long haul so we split it into 2 episodes to make it a little more digestible. Smith was a prophet of the RLDS Mormons and paternal grandson of the founder Joseph Smith. In 1918 Frederick published this Ph.D. dissertation breaking down altered states of consciousness from an early psychologist's perspective, specifically, religious states of ‘ecstacy' as he called it. A lengthy chapter devoted to peyote is particularly worth reading. “The Higher Powers: Fred M - Smith and the Peyote Ceremonies” - Shelby Barnes' 1995 paper highlighting the curious psychedelic interests of Frederick M. Smith. While Barnes does not make any direct connections to Joseph Smith and psychedelics, Barnes does note that Frederick's interests were an attempt to find the reliable keys to visionary revelation that his grandfather Joseph had demonstrated. “Restoration and the Sacred Mushroom” - Dr. Robert Beckstead's seminal research paper presented at the August 2007 Sunstone Symposium. Beckstead's paper was the first to propose the possibility that Joseph Smith used psychedelics to facilitate visionary experiences. “A 1920's Harvard Psychedelic Circle with a Mormon Connection: Peyote Use amongst the Harvard Aesthetes” Alan Piper's 2016 paper highlighting Frederick M. Smith's interest in psychedelics, and how as a standing Mormon prophet Fred was funding a 1920s group of Harvard students with peyote. “Revelation Through Hallucination: A discourse on the Joseph Smith-entheogen theory” - Bryce Blankenagel and Cody Noconi's 2017 follow-up paper further explores the hypothesis originally put forward by Dr. Robert Beckstead a decade earlier. “The Entheogenic Origins of Mormonism: A Working Hypothesis” - Dr. Robert Beckstead, Bryce Blankenagel, Cody Noconi, and Michael Winkelman's paper published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies in June 2019. This was the first paper on the subject published in an academic journal. “Visions, Mushrooms, Fungi, Cacti, and Toads: Joseph Smith's Reported Use of Entheogens” Brian Hales' 2020 response paper to the one published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies. As a believing Mormon engaged in academic apologetics, Hales details what he perceives to be holes in the proposed hypothesis. “The Psychedelic History of Mormonism, Magic, and Drugs” - Cody Noconi's book published in 2021. “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 1)” Alex Criddle's 2023 paper that was originally presented at the Forms of Psychedelic Life conference at UC Berkeley (April 14-15, 2023). “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 2)” A continuation of Alex Criddle's 2023 paper. “A Real Spiritual High: In Defense of Psychedelic Mysticism” An enlightening philosophical essay from Alex Criddle. Fear of Letting Go As we come to the end of this three part series on overcoming fear I feel that today's podcast of Letting Go to be a big one, especially for amputees. Not that we all don't struggle with letting go of: the past, what we can't control, and toxic relationships, but because as an amputee myself I have seen and heard of so many amputees struggling with these three aspects of letting go. For most of us, not living in the past is hard. We all tend to have some part of our heart in the past. Sometimes we fear that letting go of the past will also mean we will forget something that was beautiful about it. Memories stay but that doesn't mean that "living" there is a good thing, especially when we deeply miss some major part of it or, worse yet, can't forgive a transgression against us that happened in the past. I know several amputees who became an amputee due to a past wrong done to them: a drunk driver, a negligent driver that they were a passenger with, and those pasts NEED to be left there. I know I can't speak to this struggle as it is not my story nor my journey, however, I have talked with and watched the lives of people I have met that are dealing with this and one common thread amongst them is lack of joy and lack of healing. These are the people I have seen struggling with being an amputee, finding purpose, finding joy, and those who struggle to feel peace in their new place, struggling to feel good in their prosthetic and the fit, even not healing correctly or in a timely matter. Our minds are strong and can determine how we see ourselves and our lives, dictating how we feel and function. When we get stuck in a place of anger and blaming our circumstances on a past transgression, we aren't punishing the offender we are punishing ourselves! Doesn't knowing this make you want to work at forgiveness, for the sake of our own lives? You aren't saying that what this person did to you and your life is OK, you are just letting yourself let go of the one thing that could be holding you back from recovery and living a healthy, happy life....Aren't you worth that? (I think you are!) Another aspect is letting go of things out of your control. So you're an amputee now. Now what? Your limb is gone, and never growing back. Time to move forward. Learning to embrace where you are at in your journey is half the battle. You can't change what happened, but you can control HOW you handle it. If you sit and worry about healing, the prosthesis, the fear of being or not being able to walk again, etc, you are just going to stress yourself out and you are worry about something that isn't important right this minute. Stop, breathe, live for RIGHT now. Can you find something to be happy about, right now? I bet you can. Maybe it's that you survived, you healed well, you aren't on pain meds anymore. Maybe it's that you have a family that is there for you, a friend group who is surrounding you with love, support, and prayers. Maybe it's a pet that is glad you are home (they don't care if you have one less leg or not!) Perspective! Do you have it? You can't control something that has already happened to you, you can't control how long it will take you to heal, or if your prosthetist is going to be "the one". You can control your emotions, your outlook, your decisions. Start there, and let the Higher Powers that Be do their thing. If you spend your time worried and wondering how long before staples come out, how insurance might deny you, how long before I get a prosthesis that fits right you will be exhausted from all that worrying. That's not productive nor is it beneficial to your health (mental or physical). Learn to let go of the things you can't control and start dealing with the items within your control. You'll be surprised how happy you will be. Finally, letting go of relationships. Now, as an amputee, and one who has been listening to new amputees talk about the...
In this rendition of The Way Out co-host Jason and I, along with person in long term recovery and past guest of The Way Out Nick Warnke tackle a whopper of a Recovery Power Topic, Relationships and Recovery. As we mention in the discussion to follow, we did an episode on relationships in recovery, episode 114, back in December of 2018. Now five years later we're taking a fresh look at this subject in a very different light from three people in long term recovery in unique current situations regarding our relationship statuses. Jason is in a romantic relationship and has been for more than three years. As he says it's not perfect, but it's a good relationship, so good in fact he's engaged to be married. Jason, bless his heart, was the perfect person to balance out the yin and yang of where Nick and I are at with our relationships. I just got out of a serious, long term 5-year relationship, my first relationship in Recovery and in many ways it felt like a first for many reasons. What was also a first for me, is that this time I knew I didn't have to revert to counterproductive thought and behavior patterns like self-sabotage, isolating, retaliation, and controlling behavior – and I didn't – and as a result, I didn't harm myself or her or my son and I was able to walk away from the relationship hurting but without causing additional and unnecessary harm, and that my friends is growth. Nick, is in the uncertain and ambiguous middle where he is very unsure of the status of his current relationship, and as many of us can relate, uncertainty strikes at the very core of our desire to control people, places and things and can be most difficult to endure for any length of time. Nick even shares with us his ayahuasca experience, which was amazing indeed. We all get real about where we're at with our romantic relationships and we also broaden out the discussion and discuss the importance of our relationships with our respective Higher Powers, the ever-important relationship with ourselves, and our important relationships with other people both romantic and otherwise and how important these relationships are in our individual Recovery journeys so listen up. Her training is in moral philosophy, feminist philosophy, addiction studies, and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. She believes that philosophy helped her to get and remain sober. Avoiding Alcoholics Anonymous for the first 20 years of her sobriety because of the concept of a “higher power,” she is focused on using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She further shares this in her new book, Higher and Friendly Powers: Transforming Addiction and Suffering (Wildhouse Publications, August 2022).Reco12 is an organization with the mission of learning and sharing the similarities of addiction of all kinds and the similarities of recovery from all afflictions and addictions, and gaining and sharing tools and hope from others who are trudging this road. “The Battle isn't ours, it's the Lords”➡️Proverbs 24:20-21 (CWSB)20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.21 My son, fear thou -- the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:Romans 13:1-8 (CWSB)“Subject Unto the Higher Powers”1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.Power To Change Ministry Rev. This is not easy, and most people find it impossible, but I have seen the power of Prayer and I have seen God's desires fulfilled. So I pray always that God will give me wisdom to accept his way of doing things.” -Frank Fools Crow 16. From quite early in her life, Peg O'Connor felt a “double dose of shame” - from her lesbian identity on one hand, and her struggles with alcohol on the other. Her drinking problems almost got her expelled from high school, but instead she was able to stop. In her view, philosophy helped her immensely to get and stay sober, especially considering how she was not fully on board with traditional religious views or with Alcoholics Anonymous.Peg eventually became a philosophy professor, studying Wittgenstein, ethics, and feminist philosophy, and for decades she remained abstinent from alcohol. But then, 19 years into her recovery, searching for “something more,” she got more curious about 12-step recovery. At the same time, she turned her academic focus to face addiction more directly, and since then she has been writing about some of the most challenging ideas about recovery, such as surrender, powerlessness, spirituality, and “higher powers.”For this episode of Flourishing After Addiction, I was excited to speak with Peg about her most recent book, Higher and Friendly Powers, a compulsively readable, clear, and humane exploration of the notion of “Higher Powers,” using the philosopher and psychologist William James as a guide. It's great fun. I hope you enjoy.Peg O'Connor is Professor of Philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. She is the author of the forthcoming book, Higher and Friendly Powers: Transforming Addiction and Suffering (Wildhouse Publications) and Life on the Rocks: Finding Meaning in Addiction and Recovery (Central Recovery Press, 2016). A recovering alcoholic, she believes philosophy has much to offer people who struggle. You can find her at her faculty page and her author website (

Krista SHARES her 25 years of sobriety and takes us on a journey though her life story. We learn about the early years of her drinking and how she could feel the fear leaving her body as she drank. The alcohol was a great comfort to her during the early years of her addiction. She remembers being able to breath, relax, and deal with life for the first time as she got drunk. Her drinking history was full of things that damaged her life and relationships towards the end of her active addiction. She talks about wanting to control everything and everyone. AA taught her to be sober and spiritual and Al-anon taught her how to be happy. During the early days of her recovery she asked a bunch of old-timers how she was going to stay sober for the upcoming weekend. They told her to pray. Krista said, “That will never work”. But she tried it anyway and she has been on a spiritual quest ever since. Krista placed herself in the middle of AA and has never left. Her sponsor has helped her recover in every area of her life and as Krista works with her sponsees she is able to stay focused and sharp in her program. She explains how her sponsor delivers feedback and perspective with the scalpel of truth and the antiseptic of love. She has allowed others to get to know her in the program which has helped release her shame of the things she did while drunk. When Krista is working with a new girl she allows herself to become a vessel or open channel for her Higher Powers love and forgiveness. Because when the love comes through you and flows into another person you get to experience it first, and that is the magic of AA. All you get is all you give, so give it all you got!
