As an actor and filmmaker, Onur Tukel challenges the audience to delve into the frightening parts of who they are by, at times, leading them to live vicariously through his protagonists' colorful experiences. From exploring the joy of mortality in Drawing Blood, to the perils of masculinity in 2001's Ding-a-ling-Less, to a platonic theme of friendship amidst a romantic undertone in Richard's Wedding, the loss of one's identity among the backdrop of a physical manifestation of revenge in Catfight, and apathy transforming into adventure after an encounter with a vampire in Summer of Blood, which also features friend and contemporary Alex Karpovsky, Onur's films are like shining a mirror towards the more intimate and carnal senses. We learn about the power of perspective and its impact on perception in The Misogynists, which features Dylan Baker; psychotic longing for the one that got away in That Cold Dead Look in Your Eyes, which is shot near-exclusively in French; and the connectedness of spirituality during the Pandemic in Scenes from an Empty Church, which stars Kevin Corrigan. His latest projects include the novel Run Werewolf Run, which he authored and illustrated, and will be released in 2025 by Pitchstone Publishing (ironically based in Durham, NC); and a puppet film he directed about a marionette performer which wrapped in 2024. In our conversation, we discussed his collaborations with several actors, including Anne Heche, Sandra Oh, Ariel Kavoussi and Josephine Decker; growing up in North Carolina; the unveiling of psychotherapy's purpose in a cinematic endeavor; and the filmmakers who affected and inspired the origins of cinema in his eyes.Opening Credits: Anitek - Strange Sensations I CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US; Jangwa - Slow Me Down I CC BY 4.0. Host Meg Wolitzer presents three stories about the act of writing and how it can remake us--a prankish skit; a playful and tender investigation of creating with words; and a fraught social encounter between two characters who don't ‘get' each other's stories. B.J. Novak takes on the old saying “Great Writers Steal” in a short piece read by Novak and Aasif Mandvi. In Etgar Keret's “Creative Writing” a wife writes her way out of grief. It's read by Alex Karpovsky. A dinner party becomes a scene of personal and political tension in Lorrie Moore's “Foes,” performed by Joan Allen and Kyle MacLachlan. And Moore joins Wolitzer to talk about the story and creating fiction.
Unique experiences affecting disparate individuals, from the marginalized to the privileged, form the template for the types of stories filmmaker Jesse Gustafson conveys in his projects. After graduating high school in Florida, Jesse enlisted in the US Army at age 17, and was deployed on a peacekeeping mission to post-genocide Bosnia-Herzegovina. Considering the possibility of remaining in the military, Jesse decided to study theater, studying scenic design at the University of Florida and graduating with a BFA degree in stage acting and directing from UC Santa Barbara. After college he moved to Bangkok, Thailand where he directed and performed for an English-speaking theater company. He went on to work in theaters across the US, including Playwrights Horizons in New York, the American Reparatory Theater in Boston and the Magic Theater in San Francisco. He has an MFA in Film from Columbia University, where his thesis film, DAY 39, was a finalist for the Student Academy Award. He has directed the camp-cult action film, Black Site Delta, starring Cam Gigandet; and his other short films include The Starlight; Riches; and Double Header. He also produced frequent collaborator Laurence Vannicelli's feature, Vera, as well as his short film, The Young Housefly starring Alex Karpovsky. In our conversation, we discussed life in the military; the relationship between trauma and empathy; and my involvement in his next film which features a psychiatrist.Opening Credits: selfpity - Always Feel the Cold I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0); In De Nadfin - Encontré I Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United States (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US); Closing Credits: A Crooked Pulse - Dark Spots I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)

Movie Meltdown - Episode 325 We are coming to you "live" from this year's Meltdown Macabre Halloween celebration! There the gang settles in to decorate pumpkins, drink fancy seasonal beverages and discuss creepy movies. Plus we sit down and talk with MacLeod Andrews, the star and co-producer of They Look Like People - an independent film about friendship... and nightmares. So come join the party... And as we cautiously anthropomorphize some inanimate objects, we also discuss... John Carpenter, Perry Blackshear, like an Ikea catalog times a thousand, peculiar melancholy, cannibal movies, we've gotta have a script at that point, The Serpent and the Rainbow, can we just look at those chairs a little while longer, Danny Trejo, Hollows Grove, mom's story checked out, Alex Karpovsky, how can I make this scene better... how can I make this movie better, subjective reality, Kathryn Bigelow, sleazy ghost hunters, rocks with little bits of personality, by accident it became one of the most personal films he's made to date, random teeth that had been on the ground for like six hundred years, Bill and Ted's Terrible Adventure, Halloween, there's never a bad place for throwing knives, playing cool sax, Goodnight Mommy, Margaret Ying, what if demons are real?, I missed that beat, Doug Henning, Tim Cappello, vegan Peeps, The Exorcist, the genius DNA is passed through the babysitter, you're not fully appreciating your t-shirt, The Hole Story, oops, I accidentally came upon... a gigantic mass grave, auteur vision, creepy magicians, those old carbon copy machines, Evan Dumouchel, you are seven jobs, gore porn, Rubberneck, for years I would just sit in my bed being like... what if something takes over my body, held together by surface tension, hey it's The Fonz, Red Flag, psycho bromance, Near Dark, going over the microfiche, little candy families and I think it'll just turn into a gourd. "A heart-felt indie drama wrapped in a psychological thriller shell... with horrific elements." I just completely turn back into a six-year old, you'll like this ... it's bizarre, Fire and Ice, Dogtown and Z Boys, Chasing Gabor, we want it to be fun... we want to bring fun back into art, Salvador Dali, two different theories of evil... driving around in the same car, While We're Young, for me... it's a lot of disappointment, no matter how fast the rabbit runs... the hounds are going to catch up to him, putting your head in an oven, trainwreck movies, sleep... it's overrated, High School art classes, artisanal toast and discovering the secret of Blankets and Spaghetti. "I think film is the perfect collaboration of all forms of art." For more on the gallery and Ryan's art, go to: http://www.sinkorswimartgallery.bigcartel.com/

I know that a large portion of the listening audience doesn't live in New York, but holy heck are these live shows a lot of fun. And this recording still retains a guaranteed 75-85% of that fun, so please enjoy how great Jessi Klein (head writer of Inside Amy Schumer), Alex Karpovsky (Girls), Jake & Amir (College Humor) and our musical guest Savoir Adore were last Tuesday at the esteemed UCB East Theatre! We'll probably have a live show in May so look out for that, and in the meantime subscribe on iTunes and leave a review. And why not follow Andy and Mark on Twitter and laff it up!®

On today's show we talk to artist Steve Keene. Based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Steve has been called the "Assembly-Line Picasso" by Time Magazine because of his unique mass-production painting style. Steve likens this method to the way musicians work, and he's painted the album art for many indie rock bands, including Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, The Silver Jews and many others.A few weeks ago, we met up with Steve at his studio space, and got in deep about painting as performance, the satisfaction of doing actual labor, and taking your inspiration from musicians. We also got to see his workspace up close and get a real feel for how he makes art. It was a treat!Subscribe on iTunes and follow Andy and Mark on Twitter! See a live episode on April 2nd at UCB East at 8pm comedian Jessi Klein, Jake and Amir of College Humor, Alex Karpovsky from Girls and music from Savoir Adore!
