Andrew Jason is Director of Ecosystems at Grand Farm in Fargo, North Dakota, which describes itself as “a collaborative network of growers, corporations, startups, educators, researchers, government, and investors working together to solve problems in agriculture through AgTech and innovation.” Gone are the days when farming was synonymous with the image of a forlorn couple, pitchfork in hand, à la Grant Wood's American Gothic. In this episode, Jason explains how AI and innovation has inundated the farming industry as much as it has every other, spurring advancements in international agriculture, especially when it comes to sustainability, data collection, and the use of drones and robotics to increase efficiency and production. Farming is also near and dear to the host, Wendy Pease, whose father was a professor of international agriculture at Penn State in the 1970s. Then, “high tech” meant setting up a computer to monitor her father's potato research storage facility at Black Moshannon State Park in Pennsylvania. If the temperature dropped, for example, the computer called him at home to alert him. Late one night, Wendy sleepily received a phone call from an old-fashioned computer voice saying: “There is a power outage at the Potato Storage area,” which she found amazing! Grand Farm sees vast potential in connecting global communities to share ideas and technologies, with the aim of advancing agriculture production. Of late, Andrew has seen a lot of development in AgTech out of Brazil, Ukraine, Europe, Australia, and Japan. In fact, Grand Farm recently announced a partnership with Fukaya City, Japan, whose Deep Valley Initiative is an AgTech thought leader. The collaboration marks a major step toward an international approach to innovation in agriculture. Every partnership comes with its challenges, and Andrew shares the ones he's discovered that are particular to international connections: Cultural balancing act: Integrating local cultural needs with Grand Farm's global vision proved tricky. It's a common tension in multinational ventures, yet it can be managed by enabling cross-functional teams to work together. Navigating time zones: Communication across time differences requires flexibility. Andrew often connects with Japanese partners around 10 p.m. Fargo time, after his kids are in bed. While they've explored asynchronous options like video messages and chat, sometimes a real-time conversation is necessary. Patience in partnership building: The Japanese collaboration took years to finalize. While there's often pressure for quick results in the US, many cultures prioritize building relationships and trust over time. Bridging language gaps: In-country contacts helped set up interpreters to facilitate communication. Andrew notes the importance of employing professional interpreters and translators, especially in Japan and other Asian countries. Finding support: It can be hard to know where to start. The North Dakota Trade Office provided invaluable advice and international introductions. Andrew recommends tapping into your local trade experts for guidance and other free resources. Pursuing the MW program with the Institute of Masters of Wine is part of his five-year plan moving forward. Grant Wood said that when he painted American Gothic, he depicted the people he “fancied should live in the house.”
In the 1930s, Grant Wood is one of the most famous people in America, the artist behind "American Gothic"—the painting of the man, the woman, and the pitchfork, standing outside their house. An artwork so celebrated and so curious it's called the “modern Mona Lisa.” But as times change and jealousy spreads, Wood suddenly finds himself fighting for his life and livelihood, protecting a secret he hid almost everywhere but in his achingly quirky, queer art. You can see Wood's curious, nostalgic style in "The Birthplace of Herbert Hoover," in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of art: https://collections.artsmia.org/art/2805/the-birthplace-of-herbert-hoover-grant-wood Some see a self-portrait in "Sentimental Yearner," a drawing made for Sinclair Lewis's "Main Street": https://collections.artsmia.org/art/22510/sentimental-yearner-grant-wood

Grant Wood's 1930 painting "American Gothic" is one of the most recognizable images in art. Quoted, satired and parodied, this painting's legacy is undeniably enduring, but what exactly is the painting saying to its viewers? Join our hosts as they deep dive into this ubiquitous work, and others, to sort through Wood's complicated, often disparate, feelings about 1930s America and his place in it.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for October 20, 2023.According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly sunny on Friday in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 67 degrees. On Friday evening it will be mostly clear, with a low around 50 degrees. The Cedar Rapids school board is upholding its decision to have Harrison Elementary demolished and a new school built on the site after community members implored the board to reconsider.Residents believe the board's decision lacks transparency and community input and could jeopardize the $220 million bond referendum going to voters Nov. 7, that would fund additional facility projects.“I still believe a new facility is in the best interest of students, and I support the decision made back in April,” school board President David Tominsky said. “This recommendation will serve students, is fiscally responsible and will honor historic elements of the Harrison building.”Ten people spoke during the public comment period of the special board meeting Thursday, all asking the board not to demolish the school, built in 1930.Most school board members also spoke in favor of the decision. Board member Dexter Merschbrock continued his opposition to the decision, making a motion to not demolish Harrison. The motion was not seconded by any other board member and did not proceed. Harrison is one of seven public schools built in Cedar Rapids before World War II, opening in 1930. The school contains a mural painted later in the 1930s by William Henning, a contemporary of Grant Wood. School officials have said that mural will be preserved.President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump would be in a dead heat among likely voters if the 2024 presidential election were held today, according to the latest Grinnell College National Poll. Both Biden and Trump running as their party's respective nominee attract 40 percent support among likely voters. Eighteen percent say they would vote for someone else, according to the poll, conducted in collaboration with renowned Iowa pollster J. Ann Selzer.Support for both men splits along party lines, with 82 percent of Republicans saying they favor Trump and 83 percent of Democrats surveyed backing Biden. Independent voters remain divided, but tilt toward Trump, with 30 percent saying they would vote for someone else.In other polling areas, a strong bipartisan majority also favors term limits for Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court. Fifty-nine percent support abolishing the Electoral College, and a 49 percent plurality also would do away with birthright citizenship.

Grant Wood (1891-1942) is probably best known for his double portrait depicting a man and woman on a farmstead - that icon of American painting, American Gothic. But his career encompassed so much more, and was marked by an uncanny ability to weave and deconstruct "American values"—whatever those are. In The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, Wood builds us a dreamscape in which we can confront the fables and myths of our national identity head-on. And I'm bringing it to you just in time for Independence Day! Today's artwork: Grant Wood, The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere (1931). Oil on Masonite. Tysen Knight is Pop Urban Artist. He is most popularly known for his street art based on Buddha's teachings and pop art sense. Tysen is inspired by the works of famous street artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. His art style also reflects the styles of Fine Artist Pablo Picasso and Pop Artist Andy Warhol. Tysen was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and grew up in New Jersey, where he finished high school. He decided to skip the idea of going to college and obtained his barbers' license instead and worked with some of the region's top athletes. He moved to California to pursue his passion in the arts and currently resides in the Palm Springs,California. As a teenager, Tysen communicated his artwork through graffiti on walls and vacant buildings. He was hugely inspired by Andy Warhol. From an early age, Knight got hands-on drawing cartoons and airbrushing them on jeans for $25. He also created business logos. Tysen's documentary, The Art Of Hustle: Street Art Documentary, was a success that motivated him to become a regular gallery contributor, from being a street artist. It won the ''Best Feature Film" Award 2018 at the Oregon Documentary Film Festival. The production of the documentary, The Art Of Hustle, began in October 2016. Tysen worked sixty hours a week at a barbershop, and when he got days off on Sundays and Mondays, he filmed the documentary for nine months straight. Knight directed the documentary to deliver the inspirational story about all the endeavors and dedication required to achieve goals and dreams and also shed a positive light on street art and graffiti. Knight was responsible for a project, "Street Bench Art Pilot" conceived by the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission, the City Council Downtown Subcommittee, and Main Street Palm Springs, which involved decorating the benches throughout downtown Palm Springs. He created a series of benches with the theme, "Urban Desert Palms and Icons" on Palm Canyon Drive between Arenas Road and Museum Way. The icons included Garland, Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo, and Lucille Ball. Knight launched his latest collection of paintings and drawings on October 23, 2019, at www.RobertJamesGallery.com. The works are part of his new Masterpiece Mash-Up Series where he re-imagines paintings from artists such as Pablo Picasso, Leonardo DaVinci, and Grant Wood. The collection debuted in NYC (Time Square) in the last quarter of 2019. Knight has worked with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity to build homes for the less fortunate. He has also been involved in activities like preparing meals alongside Midnight Mission for the homeless and mentoring young ‘troubled' kids to pursue arts at no cost. Knight partnered with The Palm Springs Unified School District and the BAM (Boys Art Mentorship) program in California and utilized his brand of street art to inspire and mentor at-risk youth. During this mentorship program, Tysen engaged students with an interactive program and taught them how to express themselves artistically, which has in return seen the drop-out rate of men of color in these programs reduced. Tysen Knight won the award for the category, Best Feature Film, at Oregon Documentary Film Festival, in 2018, for his documentary, The Art Of Hustle: Street Art Documentary. He also won the ''Best Director'' Award 2019 at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival for his second film The Art Of Hustle: Homeless Street Artist Documentary. Tysen also won the artist “Spotlight” award at Red Dot Miami (Art Basel Weekend) Tysen is also Artist Educator-in- Residence for the Palm Springs Art Museum: Jan 23- I February 9, 2020 (Sheffer/Scheffler Arts Education Space). We are grateful to have him as a guest on Black Canvas
