An episode that dives deep into the neurodivergent narrative! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * We kick off this episode by discussing Lena Dunham's EDS diagnosis, a condition frequently co-occurring with autism.* The reason HBO's Girls resonates with us so deeply is simple—it's an autistic show created by an autistic mind.* We start by discussing Lena Dunham's art school background and creative writing degree—writing is a special interest for many of us here at Autistica.* Lena Dunham's character in Girls constantly faces rejection as a writer and exhibits classic traits of rejection-sensitive dysphoria.* Additionally, her film Tiny Furniture highlights the challenges with transitions that autistic people often experience.* We discuss her memoir, Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's Learned, exploring how its pages lend themselves to neurodivergent coding and how certain passages have been misinterpreted.* After being canceled over the passage in her memoir, Lena Dunham's career trajectory began to decline—coinciding with the time she started experiencing symptoms of chronic illness.* At this point, what happened to Lena Dunham was essentially autistic burnout—she hit a wall, just as many of us do!* Our hosts discuss how autistic people thrive when we have the freedom to do our own thing and maintain a high level of control over our work environments.* When we can't control our environments, it leads to conditions like EDS and POTS—often comorbid with neurodivergence—because of the heightened stress we experience.* In the show, which is loosely based on Dunham's own life, her character discusses sensitivities to clothing and struggles with transitions with her therapist—both hallmark autistic traits.* Lena Dunham has undoubtedly been misinterpreted—she has expressed taboo ideas in her work because she doesn't naturally pick up on social cues, which is inherently autistic.* The quirks Lena Dunham exhibits in certain episodes of Girls and in her personal life often come across as distinctly autistic-coded.* Another main character in the show, Shoshanna, is actually referred to as canonically autistic in Girls—and, well, we tend to stick together!* We also discuss the part of Girls where Dunham's character attends the Iowa Writers' Workshop and how these programs often trigger rejection-sensitive dysphoria and aren't designed to be neurodivergent-friendly.* This leads to a tie-in with our Neurodivergent Narratives writing workshop program for our paid members of Autistica, which offers a PDA-affirming and neurodivergence-affirming approach to writing workshops.* We talk about Lena Dunham's marriage to songwriting genius Jack Antonoff and how he exhibits neurodivergent coding in the songs he's written for his bands, Fun. and Bleachers.* Finally, we discuss the autistic connection between Lena Dunham and Taylor Swift, and what happens when autistic people recognize and understand each other.“When I tell people I'm autistic, they say, ‘I don't see it.' Then I say, ‘well, I'm a Taurus', and they say, ‘that makes sense.'” - Matt“A minute ago, we were talking about how exciting it is that she went to college, made a movie, went to South by Southwest, and got a film greenlit by HBO. Does this sound like an autistic thing that happens? Works 24 hours a day, wins every award, is a media darling, and then is f*****g hated by everyone?” - Angela“This is a common thing among autistic people, because when you're young and vital and stuff, you put a lot of energy out there and then, for some reason, we expect that we're going to be able to maintain that level of energy throughout our lives. We cannot.” - Matt“We experience far more stress than neurotypical people, because we live in a world that constantly bombards us with sensory information, with data. We have to mask all the time. We have more stuff that stresses us out than neurotypicals do. So, we are more likely to have all of these things, but again, we don't know if it's a 1:1 ratio that, just plain being autistic means it's more common.” - MattDid you enjoy this episode? We delved into how autism intersects with various aspects of life, from Lena Dunham's neurodivergent-coded characters to the struggles of navigating rejection-sensitive dysphoria and burnout. Tune in as we explore the nuances of being neurodivergent in creative spaces and the connections between autistic individuals, like Lena Dunham and Taylor Swift. Lena Dunham has a tendency to say dumb things, and she's garnered quite a backlash during her short career. Because of that the inclusion of her 2010 film Tiny Furniture in the Criterion Collection appears to be often mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Bay's Armageddon and Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: that is, with Criterion aficionados asking "why is this here?" But Lost in Criterion has long held that the Collection seems to have had a particular interest in festival darling interpersonal family dramas in the early 2000s -- of a wide variety! like Lee's bleakly hopeful Secret Sunshine or Assayas' bourgeoisie Summer Hours -- and I'm not convinced Tiny Furniture doesn't fit into that mold. In any case, this story of a young woman our age graduating college when we did and attempting to feel like an adult and an artist during the Great Recession hits home, and gives us a lot to talk about.

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 83: Jody Lee Lipes Cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes has always enjoyed working on diverse projects with intimate stories. Shortly after film school, Jody collaborated with actor/director Lena Dunham on her first film, "Tiny Furniture," which led to Jody's shooting the HBO series, "Girls." He also shot the acclaimed indie thriller, "Martha Marcy May Marlene," directed by Sean Durkin, about a woman who escapes a cult and grows increasingly paranoid. Larger projects soon followed, including Academy Award nominated films, "Manchester by the Sea" and "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" with director Marielle Heller. When Heller asked Jody to be the director of photography for her film about a journalist writing a profile piece on Mr. Rogers, he was extremely moved by the script and it gave him a renewed passion for his craft. Jody's most recent project, the HBO series, "I Know This Much is True," is the story of Dominick, who is struggling with caring for his mentally ill twin brother, Thomas. Mark Ruffalo plays both twins, one of whom is much heavier than the other. Jody had to first shoot the “A” side of Dominick, then the B side of his brother Thomas several weeks later after Mark Ruffalo had gained weight. Director Derek Cianfrance decided he did not want to rely very much on special effects, and they discovered that often, a single two-shot of the “twins” would sell the idea that there were two people in the room. Shooting "I Know This Much is True" proved challenging in other ways as well. It was shot on film, with extreme closeups on long lenses, and controlling the light was key so that it would match each shot. I recently did an Instagram Live with the absolutely amazing Lena Dunham! She probably needs no introduction, but Lena was the creator, writer, and star of the HBO television series Girls from 2012 to 2017 for which she received several Emmys and two Golden Globe Awards. She also directed several episodes of Girls and became the first woman to win the Director's Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing of a Comedy Series. Prior to Girls, Lena also wrote, directed, and starred in the semi-autobiographical independent film called Tiny Furniture for which she won an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. Most recently, Lena has written a book throughout the coronavirus pandemic called Verified Strangers. It's a serialized book in which she released a chapter or two a day and even let readers who read it on Vogue.com choose what would happen to the main characters, which is really awesome. Lena also wrote the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir Not That Kind of Girl. It was a huge thrill to interview Lena (and to be fair, she also turned the tables on me a bit!) and talk about books, how writing and reading provide a sense of connection, and help make us all feel understood. Plus we both thought the other’s neighborhood growing up was way cooler. I hope you enjoy our conversation!

Listen on as Lena contemplates the path ahead, ushering in a new HBO show, Camping, exploring life as a single woman, and navigating the power—and occasional pain—of social media. When you think of Lena Dunham, you probably think of her HBO-hit, Girls- and for good reason. She wrote, directed and starred in the series throughout its six seasons, garnering a huge fan base and carving out a definitive space for herself in the world of creative professionals. Since the end of Girls, she’s been directing her energy towards her podcast, Women of the Hour, and her online feminist newsletter, Lenny Letter, which she co-founded with Girls producer Jenni Konner. In this conversation from 2010, Tania and Lena talk feminism, youth, and Lena's semi-autobiographical breakout film, Tiny Furniture. At 23, Lena wrote, directed, and starred in the story of a recent post-grad who moves back to her mom’s Manhattan apartment as she struggles to find her path in life.  This interview originally aired on Tania’s radio show, Sight Unseen, on KALX in Berkeley, California, and on Resonance FM in London. For this episode, we used music from Blue Dot Sessions, a clip from HBO’s “Behind the Scenes” of Girls, a clip from the Tiny Furniture trailer, and a clip from Girls.

Today on the Podcast: Sarah Heyward. If you've ever had an unexpected chance conversation, which truly changed the trajectory of your life and career (maybe you fell upon a creative project or a new community or a business mentor, agent, or coach), then you know it wasn't simply about being in the right place at the right time. Yes, there may have been some initial serendipity that fell in your favor. But for you to have experienced sustained success and satisfaction? A true transformation? Where your present and future look and feel nothing like your past? That was ... Luck Meets Preparation: And this, my friends, is what inner and outer Creative Direction is all about — both for your beliefs and your creative business or brand. Because here's the truth: Every one of us has experienced some stroke of luck (or grace) at one time or another. However big or small, there's not a person on the planet who hasn't had some moment of blessed happenstance. The question is not, "Why doesn't that kind of synchronicity happen to me?" The questions are ... "Why don't I notice it when it does? What's draining and distracting me? How do I make myself more available next time? Who do I need to be? Where do I need to go? What do I need to think, feel, and do? When an opportunity opens, how willing am I to put myself 'out there' and simply start where I am? When the going gets tough, who will I turn to? How will I keep going? What stories will I tell myself about what it all means?" A writer of Television, Features, and Fiction: Sarah's creative chops turned a chance conversation into a seat at one of the most coveted writer's rooms in Hollywood. Her work has earned not only six seasons of writing and producing credits on HBO's hit GIRLS, but also garnered a Writer's Guild of America award and the ability to pick and choose next projects. And while she's gotten to work with Lena Dunham, Judd Apatow, Tina Fey — to name only a few — she's just getting started. Even better? She takes nothing for granted and she's having a really good time in the process. Turns out it's not fame or fortune that's made the success so worthwhile. Listen in and find out what has. Then make sure you're on our Insider Invite Only list for a chance to hear Sarah on an upcoming Dreamcatchers District panel, live in LA. In this Episode We Talk About: • How getting fired was the best thing that ever happened • What made her stand out from other screenwriters • The vulnerable question that made day 1 on set so much easier • Why the GIRLS writer's room was truly unique from the top down • What she learned working with Lena Dunham, Judd Apatow, and Tina Fey • How she handled continuous feedback, critique, revisions, deadlines • Why exploration and play are foundational to creative confidence • Where the lessons of the writer's room overlap with relationships, therapy, empathy • Why mentors are ageless and who she turns to for different needs • How she navigates being a woman in Hollywood & the things she wished she'd said • The #1 thing she refuses to bond with women around & how she vents with purpose • Saying "goodbye" to GIRLS, the fertile void, and how she avoids the "sophomore slump" • Why it's "all been done already" and, yet, it's "never too late to start" Get Ready to Hear All The Behind-The-Scenes Stories & Insights that Sarah is dropping. I met Lena Dunham in 2014 when I interviewed her for an online magazine about her book and since then we’ve kept in touch. She has been a huge supportive influence, also having generously given me a quote for my book. She needs no introduction really but here it is. It is safe to say she is one of the most successful women in the biz right now. Lena Dunham is a Golden Globe winner, best known for writing, directing, producing and acting in Girls HBO. Her first big break was in 2010, when her film Tiny Furniture and won the South by Southwest Film Festival's best narrative feature award. In 2014 she released her book Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's Learned which went on to be a New York Times Bestseller (no surprises there.) In 2015 she founded the online feminist Lenny Letter with her creative partner Jenni Konner. They have an advertising partnership with Hearst and they now have their own imprint at Penguin Random House. Her podcast Women of the Hour is also one of my favourites which you should definitely go and listen to. She is an outspoken advocate for Planned Parenthood and speaks honestly and openly about her struggles with endometriosis. It was an absolute treat getting to hang out with Lena on a fun sunny Friday morning in London in her hotel room. Love this episode. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The pleasure starts with two magnificent performances: Colin Firth as King George VI, who's afflicted by a terrible stutter, and Geoffrey Rush as an unorthodox Australian speech therapist... Once in a great while a debut feature leaves you blinking in amazement at the bountiful talent. Tiny Furniture did that for me. Lena Dunham, who's now 24 years old, is the writer, director and star of this marvelously strange, semi-autobiographical comedy about 22-year-old Aura, who diagnoses herself to be in a state of post-graduate delirium...
