Today, the Spotlight shines On renowned saxophonist Noah Preminger.Boston-based saxophonist Noah Preminger has spent years pushing jazz into new territories before focusing on one of the art form's most enduring traditions. He's just released Ballads, a collection that finds this restless musical explorer settling into the quiet power of beautiful melodies.Noah's built his reputation on bold musical choices—from stark Delta blues interpretations to intricate duo sessions with bassist Kim Cass. But with this new record, he's aiming for something different—capturing that feeling when a saxophonist plays "as if it's their last day on earth," as he puts it.Recorded with pristine clarity for the new Chill Tone label, Ballads features Noah alongside pianist Julian Shore, bassist Kim Cass, and drummer Allan Mednard, creating music that feels both timeless and deeply personal.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Noah Preminger's album Ballads)–Dig DeeperVisit Noah Preminger at noahpreminger.comPurchase Noah Preminger's Ballads from Bandcamp or Qobuz and listen on your streaming platform of choiceFollow Noah Preminger on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTubeDave LiebmanNoah Preminger & Kim Cass - Thunda + The DankDig into this episode's complete show notes at spotlightonpodcast.com–• Did you enjoy this episode? Hello music lovers, and welcome to another edition of Why Music Matters. I'm your host, music journalist and musician Jeff Miers. Today, my guest is the jazz musician, bandleader and educator Walter Kemp. Walter just released an astounding new album, called Black Whole Live, a fiery, dynamic live set featuring a band that includes saxophonist Brent Birkhead, violinist Scott Tixler, bassist Rishon Odel and drummer Allan Mednard. Kemp describes the sound this ensemble makes as “Afro-Terrestrial Sonic Interplay,' and he's right - in this mix, you can easily hear the jagged edges of forward-looking improvisation milestones from jazz history, and the sounds of the music of the future. As a performer, composer, producer, touring musician and educator, Walter Kemp has crystallized the positive force that music can be in our lives. He's got a lot to say about why music matters, in his life and in the culture as a whole. Let's get to it!

All music used with permission by The Black Whole.       Through an eclectic assemblage of touring collaborators and kinfolk, “The Black Whole” seamlessly reconnects jazz to its freer ancestral roots, while consciously and simultaneously working to uproot it through diverse sonic exchanges, instrumental interplay, and contemporary juxtapositions. Pianist and composer Walter Kemp III set out to explore this concept, pushing the boundaries of sound, and bringing with it a sense of cosmic freewheeling along with the other members of the quintet. Featuring Walter Kemp III on piano, Grammy Award winner Scott Tixier on violin, Brent Birckhead on wind instruments, Rishon Odel on bass and Allan Mednard on drums, from a June 23rd, 2022 performance, it's Black Whole – Live at the Bop Stop. Jazz-funk bassist Richie Goods and vibraphonist, percussionist, and composer  Chien Chien Lu are a powerful musical duo. On their newest self-produced release titled ‘Connected', the two come together on a collaborative effort to produce an album which reflects on an imagery of love, hope and unity within a world where unwarranted violence against African American and Asian communities exists.   ‘Connected' is a landmark for Richie and Chien Chien's collaborative musical relationship. This multi-dimensional, riveting album- highlighted by several powerful tracks that include both music and conversation - offers a message of love and hope while placing it squarely in the context of unwarranted violence against African American and Asian communities, a deeply personal reality for both bandleaders. With Chien Chien on vibes and marimba throughout and Richie splitting his time between electric and upright bass, ‘Connected' also includes the all-star contributions of drummer Allan Mednard and guitarist Quintin Zoto. Special guests include vocalists Sy Smith, Jamison Ross and Pastor Dr. Adolfus Lacey, drummers Lil John Roberts and David Frazier Jr, percussionist Danny Sadownick, keyboardist BIGYUKI, Shedrick Mitchell on organ and piano, Brett Williams on keys and rhodes and Mike King on rhodes and organ.

Jeremy Pelt - trumpet Chien Chien Lu - vibraphone Victor Gould - piano (2-4,6-8), Fender Rhodes (1,5,7,9,10) Vicente Archer - acoustic bass (1-4,6,8), electric bass (1,5,7,9,10) Allan Mednard - drums Anne Drummond - flute (4,5) Brittany Anjou - Mellotron (5), Moog Sub 37 (7) Recorded at GB's Juke Joint, Long Island City, NY on September 15 & 16, 2021 #contemporaryjazz #bebop --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/konstantins/message

Originally from Tarpon Springs, Florida, LoRe has been mentored by a “who’s who” of saxophonists, including Lee Konitz, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, James Moody, and Steve Wilson to name a few. Internationally acclaimed saxophonist and educator Bunky Green says LoRe “…will emerge to become one of the leading voices on the international jazz scene.” Saxophonist George Garzone describes his playing as “bold and unforgiving”, with “…a beautiful sound; he understands the concept of melody.” With a strong upbringing in classical music, LoRe’s playing and compositions are influenced by many genres, ranging from European classical music through today’s most influential artists on both the jazz and popular music scenes.LoRe has been featured at venues such as New York City’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMa), the Jazz at Ravinia Festival held at the Stean’s Institute for Young Artists in Chicago, the Monterey Jazz Festival in California, and the Jacksonville and Clearwater Jazz Festivals in Florida, among others. In New York, he frequents prominent venues such as Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, The Jazz Gallery, and Smoke Jazz Club both as a leader of his own groups and as a sideman. He is a member of saxophonist Lucas Pino’s “No Net” Nonet, which currently holds a residency at Smalls Jazz Club. LoRe has had the opportunity to perform and work with artists George Garzone, Ingrid Jensen, David Liebman, Tony Malaby, Ron Blake, Steve Wilson, Aaron Parks, Dan Tepfer, Ralph Alessi, and Ari Hoenig, among others. New York Based, Bassist, Composer, Recording Artist, and Educator, Ben Allison has a career that spans several decades.   Ben has established himself at the forefront of modern jazz and creative music.  A disciple of the jazz canon, rock, folk, 20th Century Classical music, and improvisational music from around the world, he firmly believes in the notion that the tradition of jazz is to move the music forward. He was a founding member of the Jazz Composers Collective that produced more than 100 performances in New York and abroad, new music, and annual concerts in the region for 11 seasons. One could add one time club owner (Kush), and now producer, record label owner, and artist advocate activist to his CV, with that last part highlighted by virtue of Ben's position as current President of the Board of the New York chapter of the Recording Academy. With more than 11 recordings out under his various group configurations, such as Ben Allison and Medicine Wheel, Peace Pipe, and Think Free bands, he is now releasing his second recording on his Sonic Camera label imprint, with ‘Layers of the City’.  A set of new compositions featuring Ben with Guitarist, Steve Cardenas, Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, Pianist Frank Kimbrough, and Allan Mednard on Drums. We spoke with Ben about his new recording, composing process, audience engagement, leanings toward activism and advocacy, worldview, and development as a recording artist.  With such a rich and densely packed career, we couldn’t possibly fit it into a brief discussion, so we have broken our conversation into several parts.  Tracks featured throughout Episode #012 Part 1 of 3: Get Me Offa This Thing - Layers of the City The Detective’s Wife - Layers of the City Green AL - Think Free Neutron Star - The Stars Look Very Different Today Jazz Scene Voyeur - Riding the Nuclear Tiger Emergency - Cowboy Justice Blowback - Layers of the City Dakan - Peace Pipe Mantra - Ben Allison and Medicine Wheel, Third Eye
