Finding the original tomb of the royal is one of the most significant developments in Egyptian archeology in recent history. Also, a video of a gloriously creepy anglerfish inspired tears and poetry online. But why was this deep-sea dweller near the surface at all?Royal Tomb Of Egyptian King Thutmose II UnearthedA British-Egyptian team has made one of the most significant Egyptian archeological finds in recent history: the tomb of pharaoh King Thutmose II, who ruled sometime between 2000 and 1001 BCE. This is the first tomb of a pharaoh unearthed since Tutankhamun's in 1922.Thutmose II's mummified remains were found two centuries ago, but they had been moved from his original tomb, the location of which remained a mystery until now. Part of the reason why his tomb's location was such a mystery was that Thutmose II was buried in an area associated with the wives of Egyptian kings, about 1.5 miles west of Egypt's famous Valley of the Kings.Joining Host Flora Lichtman to talk about this and other science stories of the week is Maggie Koerth, science writer and editorial lead of CarbonPlan, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Why The Internet Was Captivated By A Hideous FishLast week, a viral video likely floated to the top of your feed: a rare black seadevil anglerfish, which looks like a floating head with a frightening amount of teeth and two cloudy eyes, swimming in azure waters. The fish showed up near Spain's Canary Islands, off the northwestern coast of Africa. It made the news because it was spotted near the surface, while anglerfish normally reside in the deep ocean. So why was she paddling so close to the surface? Was she sick? How unusual is this? And also, why do they even look like that? We had questions.Host Flora Lichtman talks with Dr. Kory Evans, assistant professor of biosciences at Rice University, to separate fact from fish-ction. He also explains new research he helped conduct about the evolutionary history of anglerfish, which could help explain why they look the way they do.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. When scientists began pulling anglerfish from the deep ocean, they noticed something odd—all of the specimens were female, and many of them had small parasites attached to their bodies. And when they studied the fish in detail, the story got even odder—the “parasites” were actually the missing males.Deep-sea anglerfish are some of the strangest creatures in the oceans. To attract prey, the females wave around a small “lure”—a pod filled with glowing bacteria. They have a wide mouth filled with sharp teeth, and a stomach that can hold a meal that's twice the size of the anglerfish herself. But the male-female relationship may be the strangest feature of all. Females range from a few inches to a few feet long—at least 10 times the size of the males, and sometimes much more. That's one of the greatest differences among any animals on Earth. It's hard to find mates in the blackness of the deep ocean. So a male is born with a great sense of smell, which it uses to sniff out a female. And when he finds one, he latches on with his sharp teeth. He produces an enzyme that dissolves his mouth and the mate's skin. The male then “feeds” off the mate's blood. His only job is to fertilize the eggs when the female spawns. In most cases, the male grabs its mate and never lets go—it really is “'til death do us part.” But the female can carry multiple mates at the same time. The record is an even dozen—one more oddity for this unusual deep-sea fish.

Hello, this isWild Suzhou.Today, we will betalking about Anglerfish, which is a group of around 210 rather unique lookingfish.First, what is anAnglerfish? They are a group of rather bizarre looking fish that have amodified fin that sits on the top of their head. This modified fin has a fleshypiece of skin attached at the end, which looks like a bait a fisherman woulduse. This is where anglerfish get their name from. In english, the word anglermeans a fisherman who uses a fishing rod, which is what the anglerfish lookslike it is doing. This is because the fin on the top of its head looks like afishing rod, and works like one too. Other fish are attracted to the fin on thetop of the angler fish's head, thinking that they have found something to eat.Instead, the anglerfish is going to eat them! There are four different types ofanglerfish: frogfish, batfish, goosefish, and the deep-sea angler.Batfish, which isone group of anglerfish, has a unique feature. One big difference betweenbatfish and other types of anglerfish is that the fishing rod shaped fin on thetop of its head is retractable, meaning it can be hidden when it's not beingused. When people thinkof anglerfish, they probably think of deep-sea anglers. These are by far themost recognizable group. Unlike other groups, they usually swim instead of walkalong the ocean floor, and only the females have the fishing rod shaped fin onthe top of their head. Additionally, the bait, which is the piece of skinattached to the end of the rod, usually glows because of the dark underwaterenvironment. In some species, the male anglerfish is parasitic, attaching andfusing to its female mate and eventually becoming totally dependent on thefemale to survive. For Wild Suzhou,I'm Ciana, thanks for listening and see you next time.

After all the species we have covered, the Anglerfish has to be one of the most surprising and radical. Picking this species to represent our "Spooky October" for Halloween, the Anglerfish has it all. It is a creature made of nightmares that absolutely defies logic in some senses. The deep sea Anglerfish, survives in one of the most inhospitable regions of any biome, and yet survives and even thrives. Listen to this episode! Trust us, your mind will be blown! Thank you to all our fans and those that have supported us these past few years. We both can not thank you enough for the support and kind words!! Another thank you to all our Patreon supporters. We now are hosting monthly Zoom meetings with them, answering questions and getting ideas on which species they want covered. You too can join for one cup of "good" coffee a month. The Pacific footballfish is a large but rarely encountered deep-sea anglerfish known from only 31 specimens recovered worldwide. Strangely, over the course of last year (2021), three footballfish were found washed up on beaches in San Diego and Orange Counties. Scripps scientists aren't quite sure why these rare creatures are suddenly showing up on our beaches, but were lucky enough to collect, preserve and archive one of these unusual animals in Scripps world class oceanographic collections. This specimen, a true oddity, is now on display for a very limited time at Birch Aquarium. To see the footballfish and learn more about it, join us and Scripps Collections Manager, Ben Frable, for a deep dive into the fascinating story of this mysterious fish, where and how it lives, the biology of anglerfishes, and how Scripps scientists are preserving this animal for future research. The animal that Alex is talking about on this episode lives deep within the total darkness of the ocean. They have extremely unique adaptations, and you would probably get nightmares just looking at them. Even though they have a face only a mother could love, they are also an amazing example of how organisms evolve to fit their environment. So, grab your flashlight because we're going to a place where no sunlight reaches to talk about anglerfish. For sources and more information, please visit our website.Sign up for our email list on our website for the chance to win a free On Wildlife t-shirt!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/onwildlife)
Welcome to the ninth episode of Ask Deer Abby, Season Three! Abby and Hopper are thrilled to be offering advice (and puns) to some brand new animal friends. First up, it's our deep sea friend, Bruno the Goblin Shark! Bruno is feeling a bit disheartened after an attempt to swim to higher waters left him feeling poorly. Hopefully Abby can help Bruno find the answer to his discomfort, while also helping him gain a deeper appreciation for his underwater home. Next, it's Angelina the Anglerfish, who is worried that her fearsome reputation may be making it harder to make friends. Let's hope that Abby can help Angelina make some friendly connections, while also reminding her that the truest of friends love you for exactly who you are. Later on, we'll bring in some animal experts to answer the question on everyone's mind: “Why would an animal want to live so deep in the ocean?” Thanks again for listening, and as always, if you've got a problem just stop on by, and we'll say "Hi" at Ask Deer Abby! If there was a theme for this episode it'd be weird looking animals. One is so ugly God and Mother Nature kept it hidden in the darkness of the deep dark ocean until some dude stumbled into it. The other; looks like its got a male ding-a-ling on its face. Join me, Zookeeper Deidre, as we look at the 'dating' lifestyle of such an ugly lady...I'm not talking about me, I'm talking about the female anglerfish, whose size is much larger than her male and/or males counterpart. Also: bioluminescence. What is it? What does a science fair have to do with it? As for the proboscis monkey from Borneo! Why is that nose so big? What is it for? And what does a proboscis monkey have in common with a deer? I'll give you a hint: microorganisms. Also you can help save this endangered monkey by shopping sustainably. If the world does not curb its greenhouse gas emissions, by the end of this century, the number of people dying annually because of extreme heat will be greater than the current global death toll from infectious diseases - that’s all infectiousness diseases, from malaria to diarrhoeal diseases to HIV. This is the grim assessment of climate researchers and economists of the Climate Impact Lab in the largest global study to date of health and financial impacts of temperature-related deaths. Roland Pease talks to Solomon Hsiang of the University of California, Berkeley. UK ecologists have new insights about how diseases jump the species barrier from wildlife to humans. With a global survey of land use and biodiversity, they’ve discovered that when natural habitats are converted to farmland or urbanised, the animal species that survive the change in greatest number are those species which carry viruses and bacteria with the potential to spread to us. This is particularly the case, says Rory Gibb of the University College London, with disease-carrying rodent species, bats and birds. Do past infections by mild cold coronaviruses prepare the immune systems of some people for infection by SARS-CoV-2? Could immune memory T cells made in response to these cold viruses lessen the severity of Covid-19? Alessandro Sette and Daniela Weiskopf of the La Jolla Institute for Immunology lead the team which published the latest contributions to these questions. Anglerfish are perhaps the weirdest inhabitants of the deep sea. Their sex lives are particularly strange because finding partners in the dark expanse of the ocean abyss is hard. Females are much bigger than males. When a male finds a female, he latches on her body with his teeth and over a couple of weeks, their flesh fuses so he is permanently attached. Her blood supplies him with all the food and oxygen he needs and he becomes an ever present supply of sperm whenever she produces eggs. But this fusion should be impossible. The female’s immune system should be rejecting her partner like a mismatched organ transplant. German scientists have now discovered that these fish do this by giving up the production of antibodies and immune T cells – essential for fighting infections in all other animals including us. It was a shocking discovery for Prof Thomas Boehm at the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg. Anyone else had their flight cancelled? The COVID 19 pandemic has had a huge impact on air travel – air traffic in 2020 is expected to be down 50 per cent on last year. But beyond the obvious disruption to business and people’s lives, how might the quieter skies affect our weather and climate? One curious listener, Jeroen Wijnands, who lives next to Schiphol airport in the Netherlands, noticed how there were fewer clouds and barely any rainfall since the flights dropped off. Could airplanes affect our local weather? Also, did we learn anything from another occasion when airplanes were grounded, during the post-9/11 shutdown? How will the current period impact our future climate? Marnie Chesterton investigates this question and discovers some of the surprising effects that grounded aircraft are having: on cloud formation, forecasting and climate change. We're back to our usual endearingly weird bullshit this week with some absolute corkers. Sam attempts to talk about the medium of radio which somehow meanders into a conversation about languages and the origin of Monopoly (The Fast-Dealing Property Trading Game). Jack decides to read a list of the names of Europe's top flight national football leagues which descends into some kind of sports related therapy session. And to finish off, Tim wants to know what life would be like if we all had lightbulbs protruding from the middle of our foreheads. Yes, that's right. Fucking lightbulbs.
In this episode, we talk about several animals that begin with the letter A! Did you know anacondas form mating balls with up to 12 males? OR that female anglerfish absorb every part of their mates except the gonads? Tune in to learn all of this and more!

We're talking walleye and silver fish on this edition of the Angler Qwest Podcast. First, Brad Dupuie talks about wrapping up the boat show season and getting ready to hit the water. Brad's first stop will be on southern Lake Michigan fishing for trout and salmon. He says the action can be hot for trout and salmon....and has some good advice on how to catch those early season fish. Then, Dan Jordan of Team Anglerfish joins the conversation to talk about walleye fishing. Dan spends much of the spingtime jigging for walleye on the Detroit River from his Angler Qwest. He says the AQ is a very good jigging platform and Dan has tips on how to catch those fish.

Was the movie "Alien" plagiarized? How does an anglerfish make their lure glow? Why do fish fall for such a simple trick? What does it feel like to be a male anglerfish? The anglerfish might be the creepiest animal in the ocean. Find out what we know about them through the lens of the humpback anglerfish, on this episode of Species. It's a quiet week here in the neighborhood, a little break after the emotional turmoil of last episode, as we discuss episode 15 of Terrace House: Boys & Girls in the City. Every good story needs contemplative scenes between the action, and this is indeed a week of contemplation. Mizuki does some soul-searching, our hosts face old age hurtling toward them, and Uchi/Minori have an important talk, presumably before fading into the Void, because we cannot dedicate anymore of our lives to this relationship!!!!!
In this spookiest episode yet, Derek and Jim are joined by Big A and David to discuss ghostly range. Then, we drag vampires and werewolves kicking and screaming into Hollywood's 21st century. To round things off, we come face to face with the scariest animals in the world. Panelists: Jim, Derek, David, Big A

Hooray garupan! We watch a couple OVAs from our favorite anime franchise before diving back into a new series. The Snow War OVA gives Alex and Jen a chance to geek out over their wiafu, Yukari (aka Sergeant Puff) and the Anglerfish War is worth at least a few giggles. Plus, we talk a little about the PS4 game. Lunch Hour Anime Special is a Night of the Living Geeks podcast. Alright folks, I'm gonna level with ya. Not sure what's going on in this one. They go from Mimics to Anglerfish to DC's Big Barda, to torrenting tips and tricks, and a surprise special guest! They're really off the rails this time.
Did you know it's almost Episode 50?? So much stuff is about to happen when we celebrate this milestone! If you haven't subscribed or added us to your favorites yet, do it now so you don't miss a lot of fun, important news, and a chance to WIN STUFF! This episode is definitely NSFW. It starts with Amelia reading an article to Pitney about a man getting wanky with something weird. This inspires a lengthy discussion of masturbatory aids and other things into which one might stick one's dick. Then we laugh about 70s musical porn and naughty novelty items. SCANDAL! What actress caused a stink online because she wasn't able to strongarm her way into a convention? FIND OUT IN THIS EPISODE!!! (And remember: if you listen to the end, you'll be rewarded!) We love you for listening! Please take a moment to rate and review us! And please subscribe or add us to your favorites list on your favorite platform so you never miss a show! And share us with your cool friends, not the lame ones. Questions? Comments? Complaints? Write to us at PitneyAndAmelia@gmail.com! Tweet at us at @bitchenboutique! Who the heck are Pitney and Amelia? A gay guy and his fat friend talking about everything! We've got over 30 years of stories to share about stuff we love, stuff that annoys us, people we've known, places we've been, and things we've seen. Geeky, silly, and always opinionated. NAMES ARE CHANGED TO PROTECT THE GUILTY! We may be awful, but we're right! New episodes every other Friday. Recorded close enough to Austin, Texas to help with their weirdness factor. (163) Anglerfish and Pufferfish *** It's a Good Expression *** (今回の重要表現) to freak someone out = to scare someone(〜を怖がらせる) indifferent gazes = 無関心な表情 to get into 〜 = 〜に引き込まれる、〜が好きになる unsuspicious = 気づいていない to gulp down 〜 = 〜を飲み込む to refill a drink = 飲み物のお代わりをする to restrict the poor fish's diet = そのかわいそうなふぐの食事を制限することで Sir John, an honored fish advocate = 偉大な魚の代弁者たるジョン様 *** Script *** (Slow speed) 02:30-05:05 (Natural speed) 10:40-12:40 Anglerfish and Pufferfish Situation: At Mermaid Café (a building with glass walls on 3 sides) M: Hi, Mary... With all these glass walls, and the indifferent gazes of random people who happen to pass by. M: So, you were pretending to be a fish? Because you felt like you are sitting in an aquarium with a cup of fresh latte and a donut? W: Ha ha, yes. And at first I was an anglerfish. You know, huge teeth, and "a light bulb" for luring its prey, lives deep underwater. Super lovely… M: I see. No, wait! I'm really starting to get into it. You said "at first", because obviously there was something wrong with being an anglerfish, am I right? W: Uh-huh. You see, it's too bright in here now. Not like deep dark waters at all. In the evening, I could imagine the whole place to be one giant anglerfish, eating unsuspicious customers one after another! M: So, who were you then? W: A pufferfish. M: A pufferfish? W: That's right. A pufferfish. Every now and then I would gulp down my coffee and become three times my normal size. Then I would go for a refill. M: Ha ha. That's a lot of coffee. W: It's necessary for my body to produce poison. Did you know some scientists back at Nagasaki University reported successfully creating a non-toxic variety of fugu by restricting the poor fish's diet? M: Horrible, horrible scientists. I mean, who would want to save 30 to 60 people each year from being hospitalized? It's not like even half of them dies. W: Exactly my point, Sir John, an honored fish advocate. Well, get yourself some coffee and we will see which fish suits you best. M: With pleasure! At least, that goes for coffee... (Written by Dmitry Mamchur)
