With just one more Gameweek left for managers to achieve FPL glory, the lessons from this weekend are vital when making those final transfer moves
Newcastle went down 1-0 at Arsenal on Sunday to set up a nervy last weekend. A win at home against Everton is needed to seal Champions League football (bar a near-impossible set of results elsewhere).Jacob Murphy has been speaking with George this week and he has faith in himself and his squad-mates to put in the performance needed against a post-Goodison Everton that is either eminently beatable or incredibly dangerous depending on which end of Chris and George's sentences you choose to follow. The mood in the camp seems very positive though and, while we are hoping for good news in terms of Alexander Isak's participation, we're sure St James's Park will roar and the lads will do us proud. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso, presented by our friends at Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Wednesday's Europa League Final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur is possibly the most important game in the financial history of Manchester United. It's obviously important in that sense for Spurs as well, it will give them a place at the Champions League table next season, but it's more of a necessity for United. For a club that had the 4th highest amount of revenue in the world last season but still lost £113m, they simply cannot afford to lose out on the over £100m that qualifying for the Champions League guarantees. Because of that and the placement of the two teams in the Premier League table, this match has the feel of a relegation playoff more than a European final. I think it will have that feeling of desperation as well. Kickoff is tomorrow at 3pm, watch on Paramount+. Atlanta United 2 drew 2-2 last night at Crown Legacy after goals from Cayman Togashi and Javier Armas. The 2's are on a 4-match unbeaten run and host Orlando on Friday night at Fifth Third Stadium in Kennesaw. In the NWSL, the Chicago Stars have moved a September match to Northwestern's lakefront Martin Stadium. According to Jeff Kassouf of The Equalizer and ESPN, the Stars' lease is up at SeatGeek Stadium at the end of the year and Northwestern could be in play as a new home for the club. Wednesday night will see the Concacaf W Champions Cup semifinals take place as Club América host Gotham FC, while Tigres take on Portland Thorns at 10:30 p.m. later that night. The winner of the tournament will qualify for the newly formed FIFA Women's Club World Cup. Speaking of Club World Cup, Flamengo is planning to add Arsenal's Jorginho to their squad for the tournament according to Fabrizio Romano. Inter are still negotiating with Marseille for Luiz Henrique and Real Madrid are closing in on Benfica LB Alvaro Carrera in a 40-50 million Euro deal. It was also announced yesterday that Manchester City will prepare for the tournament at Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL. Expect more announcements like that around the country as teams get ready for the tournament. The first match in Atlanta is set for June 16 as Chelsea will face the winner of the play-in match between Club América & LAFC. New ticket options are available at FIFA.com/tickets. I'll be live on 92.9 The Game tonight with Atlanta Soccer Tonight at 10pm, you can also listen on the Audacy app or on-demand at the Off The Woodwork podcast. More Morning Espresso will be served up on Thursday morning here on the SDH Network.

In this episode we look back at a busy weekend in London, starting with our live event at Union Chapel and Mikel Arteta's appearance at it, followed by analysis of our 1-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday. After a difficult first half in which David Raya saved our bacon more than once, Declan Rice's second half goal was enough for three points. We discuss the turnaround, the importance of winning for finishing in second place and ensuring Champions League football for next season, as well as the manager's post-game comments on the pitch and the message he was keen to send. Then we take listener questions about a big summer ahead in the transfer market and how up front the club have been about what they want to do, the need for greater rotation from Arteta next season, Kieran Tierney's Arsenal career after he made his final home appearance, and lots more.Get extra bonus content and help support Arseblog by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblog Hosted on Acast. For the first time in their 119-year existence, Crystal Palace can call themselves FA Cup winners after a 1-0 win over Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday. The Eagles were inspired by a heroic Dean Henderson performance after Eberechi Eze's goal gave them something to hang on to in the first half, and Man City couldn't break down the Palace door despite their efforts. Elsewhere, Goodison Park hosted its final game before Everton move to "Hill Dickinson Stadium" - something that irked Niall in today's Get In The Sea nominations. The Toffees eased past miserable Southampton to mark the occasion with three points on a day where 100 former players were invited to say their goodbyes. Also over the weekend there was ups and downs in the race for the European places. Arsenal secured second while simultaneously making Newcastle's fate go down to the final day, Aston Villa and Forest earned vital points too, but Brentford threw away a lead to lose to Fulham in a local derby, all but ending their hopes of a Conference League place. Kelly Cates presents Super Sunday from the Emirates and is joined by Jamie Redknapp, Les Ferdinand, and Paul Merson, who analyse Arsenal's 1-0 win against Newcastle, which sees them secure Champions League football for next season after a stunning second-half strike from Declan Rice. The win also means the Gunners are likely to finish runners-up again in the Premier League, and Merse says Arsenal must be serious contenders for the title by Christmas, otherwise he thinks the club will replace Mikel Arteta. The trio also discuss the earlier game on Super Sunday, which saw Nottingham Forest keep their hopes of playing Champions League football next campaign after their 2-1 win at West Ham. They then give their views on who they believe will finish in the top five, with Merse saying that he is worried about Manchester City's chances of making the cut. The Europa League final on Wednesday will see either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur also qualify for Europe's prestige club competition, and they give their predictions on who will be victorious in Bilbao.

In this episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, Tim talks exclusively to former Arsenal striker Lianne Sanderson. Lianne scored 41 goals for the Gunners during their record breaking 2006-07 quadruple winning season and started both legs of the historic 2007 UWCL Final against Umea. Lianne chats with Tim about the camaraderie that underpinned the team, the role of then assistant manager Emma Hayes on the UWCL campaign, how Arsenal responded to their best player Kelly Smith being suspended for both legs of the final and how the team adapted to being huge underdogs against Umea. Lianne also talks about her affection for the club all these years later, her pride at seeing the quadruple winning team on the side of the Emirates and her hope that Arsenal can do it again in Lisbon against Barcelona.Get extra bonus content and help support Arseblog's award winning coverage of Arsenal Women by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblog Hosted on Acast.
