Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word. The book of Jonah is a wonderful story, summarised by that phrase, “salvation comes from the Lord.” The sailors are saved, Jonah is saved, and most wonderful of all, the wicked city of Nineveh is saved. Jonah knows that God is “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, who relents from sending calamity”, and yet we find him at the end of the book as a disgruntled, unhappy prophet who wishes he could die! It is clear that Jonah's heart is out of tune with God's heart. God has a heart of love for the world, not just for his own people, and He wants no one to perish, but all to come to repentance and to have eternal life. Like the father in the story of the prodigal son, God loves to forgive and welcome back the wayward, the rebellious, the undeserving, and throw them a great party. However, the older, self-righteous son looks down on his brother, and angrily refuses to go into the party. Like Jonah, his heart is out of tune with God's heart. Welcome back to ARTMATTERS: The Podcast for ArtistsToday's guest, Marina Ross is a Russian Jewish artist, and her paintings draw upon her experience of acculturation, The American Dream, and the trauma inherent within it as well as traditional feminine beauty, as a form of social capital, assimilation, and protection. These notions of power and control of the feminine body and the performance of femininity saturate Ross's work. A few months back, I was in Chicago, and had the opportunity to swing by ArtRuss Gallery, where Ross's latest solo show, Emerald City, was opening the following day. Ross walked me through her exhibition after which, we sat down and recorded this conversation. Ross and I discussed painting on paper, curating Emerald City, control and agency, working in bursts, accountability partners, community, cofounding the NYC Creative Salon, and her most recent work with the Chicago Crit Club.Ross also speaks openly about the loss of her son Rafi, and about painting's role in coping with trauma. About:Marina Ross is an artist, instructor, and curator based in Chicago, IL. She earned her MFA in painting from the University of Iowa in 2018 and her BFA in painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012. Her work has been exhibited in New York at Sugarlift, Friday Studio Gallery, Art Helix, and Highline Stages and throughout Chicago at Goldfinch Gallery, Heaven Gallery, The Franklin, Sulk, and Baby Blue Gallery, among others. She received The Stanley Award for International Graduate Research from The University of Iowa and attended the Saint Petersburg Artist Residency in Saint Petersburg, Russia (2017). Her work is in numerous public and private collections. Exactly 50 episodes ago we did a post mortem on last years team, and here we are. This one hurts, folks. No sugar coating it. What went wrong? Who is to blame? Honestly who is absolved of blame -- is anybody? Bruins and Bruins fans are taking this one on the chin and there's no getting around it. This episode is for the folks who are holding their head up high and owning this for what it is; a historic failure. Big shout out to Chirp Line callers who left the TONS of voicemails we sort through on this episode. And big ups to everyone listening to this episode rather than hiding and sulking. Sulk with us. Every year is the same. October rolls around, and, without fail, the same futile conversation takes place. "Let's make a pact!" Me and Bri say cheerfully as we slurp on our pumpkin soup, "This Christmas, we will... Not go overboard on presents. After all, the holiday season is about being together, not scanning the presents like scavvy vultures to see who's spent the most. Hurray! Keep the meal nice and simple. No foo-fah for us. Turn off all devices. We will play board games and talk after dinner. Be like the Waltons. Go easy on the alcohol. (Not sure why). Just because it's more organic and healthy. Yippee! Smile and be happy. Always. And every single year, the same thing happens. We... Spend shit loads of money, then get mad when each child doesn't fall at our feet with gratitude and say, "Wow! Thank you! I know how hard you work. I can't tell you how grateful I am for this box of Ferrero Rocher." Spend all day slaving over the stove making a stupidly fancy creme caramel recipe that is far too hard and involves separating eggs. Which, when served at dinner, is assumed to be shop bought. Take out the phone a billion times a day and say. "Oh wait! let me video it! I'll need to remember this when you leave home, and I'm sad and dead". Sulk because the kids don't say how wonderful and scrumptious your creme caramel is. Get pissed. Get in a mood. Cry. Be miserable. Moan. Feel guilty for mentioning death at Christmastime. In life there are many times in which the people around us as rivals or as teammates achieve major successes when we don't. Our immediate reaction can be pride, joy or even envy. How do we begin to deal with the success of those around us and deal with not only the internal implications but also the external ones. It can be easy to make those achievements the prize. Most likely one that you were also gunning for, it could be the job promotion, winning the race or something as simple as seeing them happy. In a wide scope we are all searching for many of the same things in life, purpose, love and support and most of the time it can feel like there is a finite amount of those. In reality our egos as well as society has told us that if you're not first your last rather than the truth which is that we are all running individual races even if it is in the same competition. Today, we discuss the nuances of pure joy without expecting something in return. Graciously accepting the successes of our opponents and learning from those moments. In your own life think about the times that friend and foe you've felt like you are second best in life. Then think about those moments if you faked a smile or if you were genuinely happy.

The Associates with Alan Rankine - Part 1 - in conversation with David Eastaugh The Associates were a Scottish post-punk and pop band, formed in Dundee in 1979 by singer Billy Mackenzieand guitarist Alan Rankine. The group first gained recognition after releasing an unauthorized cover of David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging" as their debut single in 1979, which landed them a contract with Fiction Records. They followed with their debut album The Affectionate Punch in 1980 and the singles collection Fourth Drawer Down in 1981, both to critical praise. They achieved commercial success in 1982 with the UK Top 10 album Sulk and UK Top 20 singles "Party Fears Two" and "Club Country

From Caroline Mask: It should come as no surprise that I would choose a Radiohead album for my episode but The Bends might be a bit unexpected. While not my favorite Radiohead record, it was my introduction in the fall of 1995 to one of my top three favorite bands of all time and one which I still consider one of the most groundbreaking sophomore records ever. It was Radiohead starting to dig their heels in and realize that they could and would reinvent themselves with every record they made. Sulk and Black Star are my favorites. I have loved so many people in my life through this band and a live Radiohead show is the closest thing to a spiritual experience I will ever have. Just the best.
