The African SAP User Group (AFSUG) is a community-driven, non-profit organisation independent of SAP that represent the interests of SAP customers and partners in Africa. It does this by providing a platform to share stories, best practices and insights related to their experiences with SAP technology, assisting SAP users to address their key challenges in the African context. Africa trails other regions in terms of digital adoption and maturity. There are many reasons for this, including poor internet infrastructure and coverage, lack of trust in digital service providers, and a lack of digital and general technology skills. African companies must also overcome a myriad internal factors that contribute to low digital maturity, including cultural resistance to adopting digital tools, a lack of organisational agility required to adopt digital tools effectively, and underdeveloped technology capabilities. Despite these wide digital gaps and other challenges, there is clearly a desire to catch up to the rest of the world, and digital adoption and the associated infrastructure buildouts are occurring faster in Africa than in other regions. Through events, forums and networking opportunities, AFSUG allows SAP customers and partners from diverse industries across Africa to engage around these challenges and to exchange ideas to address them, accelerating successful business implementations. Aside from unlimited access to like-minded professionals, resources and education, a further benefit for AFSUG members is being able to influence SAP's direction in Africa and globally. Saphila 2023 Saphila, meaning “Alive”, is AFSUG's world-class biennial African conference, hosted in collaboration with SAP, and is making its post-pandemic comeback from 9-11 July 2023 at the Sun City resort in South Africa's North West province. This year's Saphila conference will also be the first-ever hybrid Saphila event, further extending the agenda to delegates who may not be able to travel to or within South Africa. Saphila 2023 is an opportunity for attendees, both in-person and those attending virtually, to connect, create and collaborate through knowledge sharing about innovations, implementation and service delivery best practices while being exposed to local customer testimonials and panel discussions covering eight different content streams – from platform & tech, transformation and human experience management to the future, next-gen services and more. Several world-class keynote speakers and top industry experts have been lined up to speak at the event, promising to deliver a content-rich learning experience. Additionally, the conference promises to deliver an all-encompassing immersive environment through providing access to exhibition spaces packed with SAP partners showcasing their solutions on implementing projects faster, better and within a cost-effective budget, as well as new product showcases and demonstrations presented by SAP and SAP partners. While virtual attendees may not be able to visit the physical partner exhibition, they will still be able to enjoy access to the Saphila 2023 virtual expo centre, which includes online booths for all exhibitors. They will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive sessions and live surveys. In this episode of TechCentral's TCS+ show, Louise Steenekamp, head of IT at Aspen Pharmacare -- speaking in her capacity as a board member of the African SAP User Group – unpacks what to expect at the upcoming Saphila 2023 event. Africa's top public health body has urged all those buying COVID-19 vaccines for the continent to place orders with South Africa's Aspen Pharmacare, saying the market was key to developing vaccine manufacturing on the continent. The Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention says it was doing everything it could behind the scenes to prevent a situation where Aspen closes its facility due to a lack of orders. A company executive says this was hailed as a game-changing moment for an under-vaccinated continent frustrated by sluggish Western handouts, but Aspen's COVID-19 vaccine plant now risks shutting down after receiving not a single order.

Philippe Auvaro is the former President of OrphanPacific Inc. of CMIC Holdings. Being born in the 60s, Mr. Auvaro grew up in a generation when Japan was experiencing the economic boom. He developed an appreciation of Japanese culture including classic movies, leading him to apply to an internship at a French pharmaceutical company called Roussel. Mr. Auvaro was eventually hired as a full-time staff at Roussel based in France, then worked for Aventis, which had gone through a merger with Sanofi in France. As Mr. Auvaro wanted to return to Japan, he then joined Glaxo SmithKline (GSK) Japan where he eventually became Executive Director. Most recently, Mr. Auvaro was the Managing Director, Senior Executive Officer of CMIC Holdings and President & Representative Director at OrphanPacific, Inc.   At GSK, Mr. Auvaro started as a Deputy Director in the Sales Division. He calls these years the “most amazing 11 years” of his life as he calls the organization “a school of empowerment.” Prior to his leadership role at GSK, Mr. Auvaro has experience in moving through the traditional Japanese management style ranks as well as working in a multicultural environment in both Europe and Japan. Mr. Auvaro explains his true “cross-cultural leadership experience” came when he was promoted to lead Roussel (which at that point had merged into Hoechst Marion Roussel) in Taiwan where he created the local office from scratch   Mr. Aurvaro's first major leadership role at GSK was leading a mega product for an antiasthma inhaler. There, Mr. Auvaro says he gained “field leadership” experience by working with people from various cultural background at the ground level, being in contact with every single part of the organization including manufacturing, R&D, and digital technology. Mr. Auvaro helped set up business units and create a shared service structure for the commercial operations such as helping start market research and call centres. Mr. Auvaro then got a secondment from GSK to work for Aspen PharmaCare, headquartered in South Africa, and was asked to help start Aspen in Japan.   After GSK, Mr. Auvaro was offered his most recent position at CMIC Group as OrphanPacitic Company's leader through a personal connection. At CMIC, Mr. Auvaro had been working on providing pharmaceutical solutions for rare disease challenges.   Mr. Auvaro describes his leadership as more “hardware than software” as he leans more towards directive leadership than being the recently popular “servant leader” type. Mr. Auvaro loves to be involved in the technical side of any product or service development and calls himself a fact-driven, field person. Mr. Auvaro defines leadership as a transaction between the leader and the employees. He says: “there is a fair amount of trust and delegation that people put in you. So you need to measure and scope and accept it, or redefine the scope.”

*After just a day, the Ballito Rage Festival has been cancelled. The annual event came to an abrupt end when party-goers and staff members tested positive for Covid-19. Despite strict protocol, including mandatory vaccination for staff and attendees, 32 guests and four staff members tested positive for the virus. The Department of Health was on-site and conducted contact tracing to ensure the isolation of those who tested positive. “We take the safety of all our customers, staff and suppliers extremely seriously. It is for this reason that the event organisers have taken the decision to cancel the remainder of Ballito Rage,” said organisers in a statement. *The start of 2022 could see the South African Government introduce a Covid-19 vaccine passport system. President Ramaphosa has said although the government will consider a vaccine mandate, it would not compel citizens to receive the inoculation against their will. A passport system would restrict access to areas and public services. *The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has admitted to a mistake in the recently announced adjustments to the petrol price. Minister Gwede Mantashe said unleaded 93 and 95 petrol would increase by 81 cents on Wednesday. The price was supposed to go up by only 75 cents. In a statement, the department apologised for any inconvenience caused, noting it was the first time in the basic fuel price determination's history that it made this mistake. *South Africa's Aspen Pharmacare is hoping to produce its brand of Covid-19 vaccine. According to a statement released by the Durban-based company, Aspen is hoping to enter into a licensing agreement with Johnson and Johnson, with the intention of manufacturing the vaccine under the Aspenovax brand name. Aspen plans on selling it to a number of African states.

South Africa delays Covid vaccine deliveries as it has too much stock

South Africa has asked Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer to delay delivery of Covid-19 vaccines because it now has too much stock, health ministry officials said, as vaccine hesitancy slows the inoculation campaign. About 35% of South Africans are fully vaccinated, higher than in most other African nations, but half the government's year-end target. It has averaged 106 000 doses a day in the past 15 days in a nation of 60-million people. Earlier this year the programme was slowed by insufficient doses. Now deliveries have been delayed due to oversupply, making the country an outlier in the continent where most are still starved of vaccines. Nicholas Crisp, deputy director-general of the Health Department, told Reuters that South Africa had 16.8-million doses in stock and said deliveries had been deferred. "We have 158 days' stock in the country at current use," a spokesperson for the Health Ministry said. "We have deferred some deliveries." They did not say when deliveries would now take place. Stavros Nicolaou, chief executive of Aspen Pharmacare, which is packaging 25-million doses a month of J&J vaccines in South Africa, said most of the vaccines bound for South Africa would now go to the rest of the continent. Nicolaou, who is also chairperson of public health at business lobby Business for South Africa (B4SA), said deliveries would likely be deferred until the first quarter of next year. Vaccines packaged at Aspen's plant are part of the African Union's agreement to buy 220-million doses from J&J. The AU and J&J did not respond to an email seeking comment. A Pfizer spokesperson said: "We remain adaptable to individual country's vaccine requirements whilst continuing to meet our quarterly commitments as per the South Africa supply agreement." South Africa's government has been seeking to boost the rate of daily administered doses. "There is a fair amount of apathy and hesitancy," said Shabir Madhi, who led the clinical study for the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in South Africa. To ramp up vaccinations, the government has launched pop-up vaccination centres and sought help from community leaders. It has also opened inoculations to children aged 12 to 17.

Nick Kuzne from Sanlam Private Wealth chose Aspen as his stock pick of the day and Mark du Toit from Oyster Catcher Investments chose Long4Life. Kunze said: "Aspen Pharmacare is my pic, I've been following it just on a pure valuation play. It's trading in single digits, obviously they're in the in the news and the press for the right reasons this time. The good news is that they've got their debt paid down significantly after selling the infant formula business and a few others. I think management are doing exactly what's asked and there is also the good news of them having to manufacture Johnson&Johnson 300 million doses of the vaccine. du Toit said: "My stock pick tonight is Long4Life. They've obviously had a very difficult trading time during Covid, and it has been very hard hit in the last six months. We think that they'll get back to their previous earnings levels of 43 cents a share fairly quickly."

CEOs of large companies commit to paying SME suppliers within 30 days

In an effort to ensure small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa survive the economic crisis, more than 50 large companies have formally committed to paying their SME suppliers within 30 days. The initiative, called #PayIn30, is spearheaded by Business for South Africa (B4SA), the South African SME Fund and Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) and supported by, besides others, Business Unity South Africa (Busa), the Small Business Institute (SBI) and the Black Business Council (BBC). The recession and pandemic have severely impacted the country's 2.5-million small, medium and micro enterprises, which support about 10.8-million jobs. With a tightening economy, the benefits of the banks’ payment holidays coming to an end, and the winding down of the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS), this is expected to rise to 10% to 15% of small businesses going into business failure next year, with almost a million jobs lost and at risk. Even before the crisis, one of the key pressure points for SMEs was access to working capital and cash flow. This has a domino effect, as more than 20% of small businesses struggled to pay their staff and suppliers, and were denied access to finance because of poor cash flow. Covid-19 has exacerbated this problem. Some companies have used the crisis to extend payment terms and have asked SME suppliers to reduce fees, which is noted as unsustainable for smaller businesses. Corporate South Africa recognises that paying their SME suppliers within 30 days is one of the key levers for an SME’s sustainability, the initiative noted. “#PayIn30 is aimed at institutionalising a culture of early payments of SMEs. Over 50 companies have committed to this campaign and we expect this number to increase in the months to come. I am proud that our members recognise that we’re all in this together, and as corporate leaders, we need to do our part to help our economy grow,” said BLSA CEO Busi Mavuso. “We support unreservedly B4SA’s drive to ensure that corporates in South Africa pay SMEs within 30 days of receipt of invoice. Paying timeously is even more important in these difficult economic times when companies are struggling to maintain revenue. "AngloGold Ashanti hopes that by being part of this nationwide campaign, we can help raise awareness about how something as straightforward as paying invoices within 30 days can have a positive impact on SMEs. It will enable them to keep cash flow coming, helping them to weather the current economic storm. These businesses are not only providing goods and services, as well as adding to tax revenue, they also provide work for millions of people across the country and are of great value to South Africa,” said AngloGold Ashanti interim CEO Christine Ramon. “If there’s no money coming into an SME from its customers, there’s no money with which to pay their employees, lenders or their own suppliers. The knock-on effect of late payments reverberates across the economy. That’s why early payment terms for SMEs are critical. Aspen Pharmacare wholeheartedly supports B4SA’s #PayIn30 campaign and commits to paying all its SME suppliers within 30 days,” commented Aspen Pharmacare senior executive Stavros Nicoloau. “At our South Deep mine on the West Rand we support almost 80 suppliers from surrounding communities. Most of them are SMEs heavily reliant on work from us. It is therefore critical that we pay them within days after they have completed their job,” noted Gold Fields CEO Nick Holland. JSE CEO Leila Fourie said SMEs were key to the growth and development of the economy and play a fundamental, grassroots role in driving employment in our country. Many livelihoods are dependent on the success of these small businesses. "It’s for this reason that we, as the JSE, have pledged our support for the B4SA campaign, #PayIn30, which calls on corporate South Africa to play its part by committing to pay SME suppliers within 30 days. There's been a number of reasons why, most notably debt buildup and shareholders are obviously uncomfortable with that. We've seen not a lot of assistance come through in the form of a slight decline in earnings and revenue. The company has of course disposed of assets and paid down some debt. It was previously at about fifty three billion rands worth of debt, today sits at about thirty nine billion so, definitely making headway in paying off their debt. It is also transforming the company, its European operations are currently under strategic review and it is transforming across from a generics business into a sterile injectables business.
