How Did Benni McCarthy Get Rashford Back To His Peak? Manchester United were the most consistent team last season. They had one win in the whole of August, one win in September, one win in October, one win in November, one win in December. But 2022 is the talk of the past. And the new year has brought a breath of fresh air to the club. United is very much in the title race, made it to the final of the Carabao cup, and is still in the FA Cup and Europa League. While Marcus Rashford might be the man grabbing the headlines, behind the scenes, Benni McCarthy has been crucial to his Manchester United renaissance. But how did he manage to do that especially when greats like Mourinho, Van Gaal, and Ragnick failed to kickstart United's forward lineup? Here's how Benni McCarthy got Rashford back to his peak.

Africa Super League – new dawn for football?

Confederation of African Football, CAF, with the backing of FIFA, has launched a new Super League aimed at injecting much-needed funds to clubs on the continent. CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe promised that the tournament, due to start in 2023, would financially transform African football with $100 million on offer in prize money alone. But, as Ivana Davidovic finds out, there are more questions than answers for many involved in the game on the continent. The owner of Cape Town City, John Comitis, says that they are in the dark about how the new competition would work in practice and that South African Premier Soccer League, where they were the runners-up last season, would be badly affected by the new Super League. Nigerian football journalist and the former member of the dissolved FIFA Task Force Against Racism, Osasu Obayiuwana is worried that there are no clear plans where the money would come from for the Super League nor how teams could travel regularly across the vast continent. He also warns that a big problem would be the lack of interest in pan-African club tournaments from broadcasters and sponsors, as it is difficult for many Africans to regularly follow on TV what is happening in football leagues across the continent. However, the legendary South African striker, UEFA Champions League winner and the current Manchester United first team coach Benni McCarthy believes that the Super League would boost standards across Africa, helping young players compete with the best from around the world. As we recorded Season Two of The Big Interview, one theme tended to stand out above all others: street football. It seemed as though every one of our guests was able to share a memory of being a kid kicking a ball about on the street outside their house, in a nearby field, or simply against the door of a shed so, clearly, we were left with no choice but to bring those childhood tales together and to create a clip show dedicated to street football. It is perhaps fitting that we begin with a history lesson, as Alex McLeish and Walter Smith recall the carefree days, coming home from school and rushing right back out the door to join in the game they knew was already under way at their local field. Mark Noble also remembers joining every youngster on his street to play a game on a school field behind their houses.Thomas Hitzlsperger explains how he was able to transform the family farm into a football pitch to rival Wembley and Matt Le Tissier describes the game he made up for himself in his back garden and which honed his technique. Those were idyllic childhood memories, but street football taught harsh lessons too. Just listen to the testimony of John Collins and Jonny Evans. Benni McCarthy will also take us on to the deadly streets of Cape Town, where playing football meant stopping occasionally to avoid a gangland shooting.Street football is no longer a glorious part of growing up and, in the final part of this clip show Smith laments its loss, while Neil Lennon argues that the development of youth players is being stifled by too much coaching.Enjoy! Who's next? Manchester United in the last 16. Benni had always dreamed of playing for United and he left his mark against them in 2004, scoring twice in a stunning first leg victory. It was a colossal victory, achieved against mighty odds and with a team Mourinho built on a scale that could hardly have been further from the giants they would face on the way. That team's top goalscorer, and our guide through this story, is a case in point.
