Send us a textIn 2017, Colorado guitarist and singer/songwriter James Dumm came up with an idea for a supergroup. He had played songs from The Allman Brothers Band with his Denver jam tribute, Mountain Jam, and he wanted to create another tribute band featuring an all-star lineup. Thus, The Other Brothers came to be.The core lineup consists of Dumm on electric and slide guitar, Rob Eaton Jr. (also from Mountain Jam) on electric guitar, Todd Smallie on bass, Bill McKay on keys, Will Trask on percussion, and Mark Levy and John Michel on drums.Among their performance accomplishments, Michel frequently tours with the John Oates Band, and McKay toured with Smallie in the Derek Trucks Band, for which Smallie was a core member. The band's final album, Already Free, which features Smallie on bass and backing vocals, won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.Meanwhile, Dumm and McKay play with Johnny and the Mongrels, Dumm with Drunken Hearts, Eaton Jr. with Brother's Keeper, Levy with Circles Around the Sun, and Trask with High Hawks. The lineup is flexible, since not every member can make it to every show due to their other projects. Trask's role as a percussionist is especially flexible, as the choice is meant to represent choices in the band's later career, and Jiho Han, bassist for Judo Chop, will sub for Smallie in various upcoming shows. Send us a textRebecca and Megan Lovell, the GRAMMY-winning sisters who compose Larkin Poe, call themselves “serial idea keepers.” This means they don't write every day. Instead, “we pull back on ideas until we are ready to write,” they say. This seasonal writing, as they and other songwriters like to call it, requires discipline: you have to resist the urge to write every day and only write during certain times. The advantage of this is that the words flow freely when it's time to write. But the Lovells bemoan this age of constant online stimulation, where artists are missing one critical element for creativity: boredom. “There's not enough boredom in our lives. We need time to daydream,” they say.Larkin Poe's latest album is called Bloom.Ed note: to clarify my intro, Larkin Poe won the 2024 GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Blues Album for their 2023 album Blood Harmony.

“Grandfather Courage” Fantastic Negrito may have been born in Massachusetts, but he's a Bay Area guy through and through. The 8th of 15 kids, he moved to Oakland as a twelve year old and immediately immersed himself in the sounds of the 510 and the 415. He was no stranger to punk rock clubs like Berkeley's Gillman or the underground hip hop clubs of Oakland. He liked it all—metal, indie rock, soul, punk and jazz and the legend goes that he learned to play by sneaking into the music classrooms at Cal, even though he wasn't a student. Using his birth name of Xavier, in 1993 he signed a deal with Prince's former Manager's Lexington House Records who had a distribution deal with Interscope. Three years later he put out his debut album, simply titled Xavier. A horrifying car crash in 1999 nearly killed him but after waking up from a three week coma, he started to see his career in a totally different way. That new angle wouldn't take hold until 2014, seven years after a self-imposed exile of not making music anymore. He emerged in his 40s as Fantastic Negrito, a personae that made what he called Black roots music for everyone. And, it turns out, everyone was into it. Fantastic Negrito pulled off an improbable hat trick, winning the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2016 for The Last Days Of Oakland, repeating that feat for 2019's Please Don't Be Dead and doing it again for 2020's Have You Lost Your Mind? His new album Grandfather Courage is the acoustic reimagining of his 2022 album White Jesus Black Problems and it's nothing short of brilliant. It's indie rock soul, it's low-fi blues, it's big, it's grand, it's ambitious and it's one of the richer musical experiences you'll have all year. www.fantasticnegrito.com www.alexgreenonline.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Born Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz, by now much has been made of Negrito's own unique story—his early years growing up in an orthodox Muslim household, the doomed major label deal that turned him off of the music industry altogether, the near-fatal car cash that permanently damaged his guitar playing hand—as well as the remarkable redemption arc that began in 2015, when he won the first ever NPR Tiny Desk Contest. In the years that followed, Negrito would go on to take home three consecutive GRAMMY Awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album, tour with everyone from Sturgill Simpson to Chris Cornell, collaborate in the studio with the likes of Sting and E-40, launch his own Storefront Records label, perform at Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Newport Folk, Bryon Bay Blues, and nearly every other major festival on the map, and found the Revolution Plantation, an urban farm aimed at youth education and empowerment. On this episode of Outside In, Fantastic Negrito talks with Jon about his father's fabricated existence, a most unexpected ancestry, Oakland, healing and being raised on the streets by a family of eclectic wolves.
For nearly 30 years, G. Love (Garrett Dutton) has moved fluidly between the blues, hip-hop and alternative worlds. The track is part of the upcoming album Philadelphia Mississippi, due out June 24. G. Love (on dad duty!) talks to Jordan and Demi about the new album, staying creative, and venturing into the NFT space.
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Record Company over Zoom video! The Record Company's highly anticipated new album Play Loud is out now on Concord Records. Listen/stream HERE.“How High,” the first single released from the LP, is currently #3 at AAA Radio. The track has also reached Top 3 on the Americana Singles Chart while Play Loud has been Top 3 on the Non-Comm Albums Chart in advance of its street date.Play Loud is produced by GRAMMY-winning producer Dave Sardy (Oasis, Wolfmother, Modest Mouse, LCD Soundsystem.) On the album, the group stretches out artistically and explores their far-flung influences. “We totally flipped the process on this record to allow for every idea and possibility, so it wasn't just the three of us, closed off in our bubble. It was like, ‘Let's take some risks and see what we can really do,'” describes bassist Alex Stiff. The Record Company—consisting of guitarist/lead vocalist Chris Vos, bassist Alex Stiff and drummer Marc Cazorla—most recently released their EP Side Project (also via Concord Records), which finds the band reimagining and reconstructing some of their favorite tracks by a wide range of artists including Big Mama Thornton, Cypress Hill, INXS and Willie Dixon. Listen HERE.Play Loud is the follow-up to the band's critically lauded sophomore album All of This Life. Upon its release, Rolling Stone noted that the single “Life to Fix” “isn't so much a return to form as it is taking that form to a big new level,” while NPR Music raved that the track “breathes new life into a style of music.”The band's debut, Give It Back to You, earned them a GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. The critically acclaimed record produced three Top Ten hits at Triple-A radio, including lead single “Off the Ground,” which reached #1 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart. Entertainment Weekly describes their debut album as a “soul scorcher.” The Record Company has appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” CBS “This Morning,” NPR's “World Café” and SiriusXM, and has shared bills with John Mayer, My Morning Jacket, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Zac Brown Band.We want to hear from you! Sam and Jim invite their good friend Malcolm Spellman in to the room. Together they talk about high stakes pitching and then they break an original idea, submitted to us by Meagan Daine.More about Malcolm Spellman:Malcolm Spellman Executive Produced and served as Showrunner of Marvel's newly premiered THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER, currently streaming on Disney+. After establishing himself as a feature screenwriter, Malcolm first entered the series TV space by rising up the ranks of Fox’s hit drama EMPIRE over its first three seasons. Following EMPIRE, Spellman joined the staff of a platform launching mystery drama, as Executive Producer of TRUTH BE TOLD, starring Octavia Spencer, in its inaugural season—among the earliest and most widely viewed of Apple+ first wave of original shows.Along with the historic blockbuster release of FALCON, Spellman marked another personal first earlier this year when HIP HOP UNCOVERED, the docuseries he Executive Produced, aired on FX. Currently, Spellman is consulting on another streamer-launching event series, BEL AIR, Peacock’s revival of the Will Smith-led FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR, originally on NBC.Starting in 2019, Spellman and his wife Nichelle Tramble-Spellman, herself a premiere TV Showrunner, partnered to launch their production company The 51 Entertainment, striking a first-look partnership with HBO. Born Xavier Dphrepaulezz in rural Massachusetts, by the time he was 11 the boy who'd come to be known as Fantastic Negrito was living on the streets of Oakland, bouncing between foster families, and running with gun-toting gangs. An interest in music took him to LA in the early-'90s, where he ended up working with Prince's management team and signed to a $1 million recording contract. When he was injured in a terrible car crash and lost that deal, he made a living running an illegal nightclub in South Central LA. Believe it or not, they're not the most remarkable elements of Dphrepaulezz's career. He returned to Oakland in 2008, where he started an artistic collective called Blackball Universe and became an urban farmer. And one day, after not playing for years he picked up the only guitar he hadn’t sold and played it to his then infant son, and that’s all it took to relight his musical spark. Dubbing himself Fantastic Negrito he started releasing albums, with 2016’s The Last Days of Oakland, and its 2018 follow-up Please Don’t be Dead, both winning Grammys for Best Contemporary Blues Album. At the time of publication, he’s up for his third Grammy for 2020's Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?. Come inside the incredible career of Fantastic Negrito.
Episode 20 : Xavier DphrepaulezzFantastic Negrito / Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? REDUXOn March 14th our friend and Change the Story guest Xavier Dephrepaulezz, also known as Fantastic Negrito will hear if he has garnered his 3rd Grammy in 5 years for his 2020 release Have you Lost Your Mind Yet. To help nudge the stars into alignment for Xavier we are re-broadcasting our Episode 6 conversation with him. This Episode not only includes great music and, of course, FANTASTIC stories, but also, an inspiring dialogue on next steps for the coming community revival. Threshold Questions and Delicious Quotes:What is the danger of scapegoating? Well, of course, that's the biggest lie ever sold, not told. There should be a class on that. That is how every civilization has controlled other nations and its populace, from Genghis Khan. The Chinese say Genghis Khan was the bad guy that's going to get us (he actually did get you). You know that. Yet the Romans did it. You know, everybody does. We do it. Is music a change agent? Music's a change agent, film is a change agent, art is a change agent, a bakery's a change agent, a coffeehouse is a change agent, a conversation is a change agent. They're all change agents, but the most important change agent is in your heart. That's the thing that changes the world. Change your heart and change the world. What do white folks and black folks need to talk about? But we got to at some point talk to each other. I want to do, a town hall like this. And I want the white people to stand the fuck up and say, you know what? I'm kind of scared of you guys. We need that shit, and the black people; don't you don't call the person a racist. What's next for Oakland? What I'm doing right now is trying to build this hotel and this whole all these blocks in the California hotel, boutique hotel. Fantastic Negrito - "How Long?" from the 2020 album Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? on Cooking Vinyl. With his past two albums, soulful singer/songwriter Fantastic Negrito (real name: Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz) won Best Contemporary Blues Album at the Grammy Awards, and with his latest LP, Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?, he's poised for a hat-trick. On his new album, Negrito says, "I wanted to write about people I knew, people I grew up with, people whose lives I could personally affect, and whose lives have impacted me," adding, "It was the hardest album I’ve ever written." On today's Song of the Day, Negrito continues to ask the important questions; he tellsPollstar the title was inspired by author James Baldwin's query: “I haven’t got much time left – how long are we going to keep doing this?” He poses the question to "all perpetrators of violence," adding: "There’s so many topics. How long are we going to keep doing all the things we’re doing before we break? Because this is not very sustainable; because we can’t keep doing the same things we’ve been doing in this country for the last 40 or 50 years. You can only destroy, and that’s what we’ve done. It’s broken. Maybe this is just the catalyst for ending [white supremacy]. We’re in need of it. We need to turn it around if we’re going to survive." When you listen to Fantastic Negrito, you're invited to hear the story of life after destruction. Each song is a real story about a musician from Oakland who experienced the highs of a million-dollar record deal, the lows of a near fatal car accident that left him in a coma, and is now in the midst of a rebirth that took him from the streets of Oakland to the Grammy stage. On the way he won the NPR Tiny Desk Contest and toured the world, playing alongside artists ranging from Chris Cornell to Solange to Sturgill Simpson. Fantastic Negrito's first two full length albums, The Last Days of Oakland (2017) and Please Don't Be Dead (2019) won Grammys for the Best Contemporary Blues Album, and his heavily anticipated third album Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? will be released in the summer of 2020.
Fantastic Negrito is the incarnation of a musician who is reborn after going through a lot of awful shit. In fact, the name Fantastic Negrito represents his third rebirth, literally coming back from death this time. The narrative on this man is as important as the sound, because the narrative is the sound. Songs born from a long hard life channeled through black roots music. Slide guitar, drums, piano. Urgent, desperate, edgy. Fantastic Negrito is the story of a man who struggled to “make it”, who “got it”, who lost it all, and somehow managed to find his way back. Returning to music in 2014 by playing on the streets of Oakland, Fantastic Negrito won the inaugural NPR Tiny Desk contest. In 2016 he released his debut full length album, The Last Days of Oakland, which went on to win a Grammy in 2017 for Best Contemporary Blues Album. And this year he won his second Grammy in the same category, for his critically acclaimed new release Please Don't Be Dead. His third album Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? will be released in the summer of 2020. 1,000 Mothers to Prevent Violence is a grassroots nonprofit organization devoted to serving families and friends who have been directly impacted by violence See more at: 1000mothers.org I am you, you are me, we are we -- A tribe with love in our hearts. Betty Jo Haskins was born in Muskegon, Michigan. The family moved to Detroit when she was six years old. Bettye did not get her start in the church, but in that very same living room, where there was a jukebox, filled with the blues, country & western, and R&B records of the time. The "5" Royales, Dinah Washington, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Red Foley, ...these were her roots. At 16 years old Betty Jo changed her name to Bettye LaVette. Bettye's first single was "My Man - He’s a Loving Man.", in the fall of 1962. The record charted #7 R&B and put her on her first national tour, with Ben E. King, Clyde McPhatter, and another newcomer, Otis Redding. Some of Bettye’s albums include: “Let Me Down Easy”, “Tell Me a Lie”, “A Woman Like Me”, “ I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise”, "The Scene of the Crime", and “Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook.” Bettye has won many awards including: W.C. Handy Award in 2004 and the “Pioneer Award” from The Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 2006. “The Scene of the Crime” album was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Blues Album” and “CD, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook” was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Blues Album.” Late 2012 saw the release of her album, "Thankful N' Thoughtful", and her autobiography, variously described as 'engrosing', 'riviting', 'hair-raising' and only suitable for the over 18s, "A Woman Like Me", co-written with David Ritz. It seems that we at Inside MusiCast have recently been delivering musical legacy stories. Our next guest is also a legacy artist. His dad was a big band leader for Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra; his Mom, a talentetd vibes player; his brother Michael is a sought-after keyboardist and session player. But, if you’re a fan of the rock band YES, then you’re probably familiar with our guest, Billy Sherwood. A seasoned multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer, Billy earned a Grammy nomination as producer for Paul Rodgers’ ‘Muddy Water Blues’ for Best Contemporary Blues Album. While still with YES, he simultaneously worked on his own solo efforts and took on new producing projects that have included work with YES bassist Chris Squire. Most recently, he has joined a new band - CIRCA, featuring YES alumni Tony Kay and Alan White, along with guitarist Jimmy Haun, and released their debut album in 2004. Inside MusiCast welcomes Billy Sherwood.
Willie’s first recording was a local production with Alabama bluesman “Birmingham” George Conner, titled Walkin’ the Walk, Talkin’ the Talk. This CD created an unexpected amount of interest, and promoted reviewer Gordon Baxter to state, “No label, no catalog number, and definitely no doubt about it, Walkin’ The Walk Talkin’ The Talk will feature in my top 10 albums of 2000.” I Am the Blues, Willie’s next CD, was a solo project, produced by Willie King in collaboration with the Alabama Blues Project. Again, despite being independently produced and initially only locally distribute, this album gained a lot of critical acclaim. This CD was a “Top 10 Album of 2000” for Niles Frantz, host to Chicago Public Radio’s Comin’ Home program. He described it as “Howlin’ Wolf meets B.B. King in the Alabama backwoods. The real deal . . . brilliant.” Jim O’Neal eventually caught up with Willie King to record Freedom Creek, Willie King’s debut album on Rooster Blues Records. With international distribution, this was King’s powerful introduction into the wider music and blues world. Not only was the album acclaimed by critics worldwide, it also received awards from Living Blues Magazine for Best Male Blues Artist (2001), Best Blues Album (2000) and Best Contemporary Blues Album (2000). http://www.willie-king.com/
