The Georgia-born, Nashville-based roots-rock outfit Larkin Poe have had a busy year. Last summer, they toured across the U.S. supporting Slash, and released their seventh studio album, Bloom, on January 22. With a bit of downtime back in Nashville, co-shredders-in-chief Megan and Rebecca Lovell joined Shred With Shifty to deconstruct their face-melting leads on “Summertime Sunset,” off of their 2022 record Blood Harmony. The Lovells grew up reading sheet music and learning violin via the Suzuki method—there was little room for going off the beaten path until they fell in love with Jerry Douglas' dobro playing on Alison Krauss records. Rebecca took up the mandolin, while Megan went for the dobro and the slide side of things. It took a while for them to get comfortable turning up from their bluegrass roots, but eventually they built Larkin Poe's amplified, blues-rock sound. First up, Rebecca, playing a pristine '60s SG, shows how she put together her stinging, fuzzy solo by “hunting and pecking out” melodies in her mind, building up the chops to follow her intuition. Then Megan, playing a Rickenbacker-inspired lap steel of her own design through a Rodenberg TB Drive, details her dizzyingly fast slide acrobatics, and her particular “rake” technique that she copped from Jerry Douglas and Derek Trucks. Tune in to hear them talk about how to sustain family relationships while going professional, keeping music community-minded, and whether or not they'll go back to bluegrass. Send us a textRebecca and Megan Lovell, the GRAMMY-winning sisters who compose Larkin Poe, call themselves “serial idea keepers.” This means they don't write every day. Instead, “we pull back on ideas until we are ready to write,” they say. This seasonal writing, as they and other songwriters like to call it, requires discipline: you have to resist the urge to write every day and only write during certain times. The advantage of this is that the words flow freely when it's time to write. But the Lovells bemoan this age of constant online stimulation, where artists are missing one critical element for creativity: boredom. “There's not enough boredom in our lives. We need time to daydream,” they say.Larkin Poe's latest album is called Bloom.Ed note: to clarify my intro, Larkin Poe won the 2024 GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Blues Album for their 2023 album Blood Harmony.

Grammy-winning Southern roots rock duo Larkin Poe (sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell) join us to chat about their creative process and their exciting forthcoming album, Bloom. PART ONE:'Tis the season! Scott and Paul chat about the classic Halloween songs. Is it time for a modern day resurgence of spooky music?PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, known to the world as duo Larkin PoeABOUT LARKIN POE:Blues-based rock duo Larkin Poe is comprised of multi-instrumentalist sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell. The Georgia natives began their career as an acoustic trio with their sister Jessica in 2004. That year they appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and won the Prairie Home National Teen Talent Competition. In 2008, the Lovell Sisters' song “Distance” won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest grand prize in the country genre. That same year, their song “Time to Grow” received honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition. After an impressive indie career that included two albums, as well as appearances at Bonaroo and the Grand Ole Opry, the Lovell Sisters disbanded. Rebecca and Megan reemerged as a duo pursuing a new sound that was steeped in the electric blues rather than acoustic and bluegrass music. Between 2010 and 2013 they released five indie EPs, two collaborative albums, and a live DVD. They released their debut album as a duo in 2014 and gained attention with the standout track “Don't.” In 2016 they reissued their debut studio album under the title Reskinned, which included new tracks such as “Trouble in Mind.” With the 2017 album Peach, Megan and Rebecca took the production reigns and continued to build a following. The next year's Venom & Faith reached #1 on Billboard's Blues Album chart and earned the sisters their first Grammy nomination. Their sixth studio album, Blood Harmony, garnered another Grammy nomination, which resulted in their first Grammy win in 2024. Larkin Poe's latest album is called Bloom and is set for release in January of 2025.

“Our relationship is everything about this band,” conceded Rebecca Lovell to PG in 2022. “The way that we communicate, the way that we play together, the way that we facilitate one another's musicianship. It is the air that we breathe as a band, and everything revolves around our siblinghood.”Their symbiotic sorcery has taken them from budding bluegrass pickers in the Lovell Sisters (then alongside older sister Jessica Lovell) to real-deal rockstars as Larkin Poe with several No. 1 albums on the Billboard blues chart. Since 2010, when the sisters regrouped as an electric duo, they've released six studio albums, five EPs, and one live set. Each musical installment from the twosome continues to bring fresh songwriting and sonic influences, further intensifying and enlivening their core chicken-fried, boot-stompin', roots-rockin' sound. On the penultimate day of their first touring leg in support of 2022's Blood Harmony, the sensational Larkin Poe sisters, Megan and Rebecca Lovell, welcomed PG's Chris Kies onstage at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl to talk tone. Megan shows off her brand-new Beard signature Electro-Liege lap steel and a 1950s Rickenbacker B6, featuring some ingenious engineering that inspired the Liege's unique silhouette. Rebecca explains how she fell for the HSS Stratocaster and why she's finally ready to be in a committed relationship with fuzz. Plus, we find out who's taking who's gear when it comes to the Lovell sisters and their significant others.Brought to you by D'Addario String Finder.

We at The Preston & Steve Show got to talk to one of the bands set to be at the always-glorious MMRBQ and Preston's favorite modern band in the world: Larkin Poe!  Rebecca and Megan Lovell's live performance in the studio this past fall still sticks with us, mainly because that is when they debuted their song “Strike Gold.” Our assistant producer Connor recently saw them live, and he loved the show. Rebecca and Megan had a lot of fun at it as well. They cannot wait to come back to Philadelphia, especially in September for the MMRBQ.  Having come up in the bluegrass scene, the sisters love playing festivals. There is a lot of collaboration and jamming at bluegrass festivals, which is a sight you don't often see with rock ones. However, we and the sisters hope that can change with the MMRBQ. Seeing Rebecca sing with Billy Idol would be quite a sight, but we want to see her harmonize the Safelite jingle with Steve and Casey while Preston plays drums.  We did get to talk with the sisters about their most recent album, Blood Harmony. Preston found that the album has a much larger sound compared to the previous ones, and according to Rebecca, that's ironically from stripping down the music. By being on the road, Larkin Poe has gotten comfortable as a four-piece band, which translated into the studio with them avoiding the layering of guitars and vocals on Blood Harmony.  It turns out, the sisters have a very close relationship with Elvis Costello. They met at a musical event, and he has since become a great mentor to them. He was the one who taught them not to simplify themselves or confine their music to a box. He believes that artists should curate the art they are passionate about, and, in turn, fans will respond with love.  Megan and Rebecca recently made their television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Preston was very happy about one of their song choices. They played “Bad Spell,” a song he describes as “stanky.” That is intended as a compliment!  The sisters are also close to WMMR's resident vampire Jacky Bam Bam. He has their personal cell numbers, and they can confirm what we have always known about him. They called him “one of the most precious of all the rock ‘n roll angels.”  Thanks to Rebecca and Megan for having a chat with us. Larkin Poe joined the gang in-studio for an incredible performance and interview on Friday. For those that don't know, Larkin Poe is a roots rock band from north Georgia. Fronted by sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, their music features bluesy riffs and soulful vocals. The two graced us with their lovely presence and talked about their rock n' roll upbringing. They referred to themselves as “students of the blues.” They grew up on all things rock thanks to their parents, so they ditched their classical instruments and picked up “banjos and mandolins.” Well, thank goodness they did! Their sixth album comes out on the 11th of November and they actually gave the gang a sneak peek (dedicated especially to Jacky Bam Bam) of one of their new tracks, “Strike Gold.” It's so new, Rebecca even needed a lyric sheet! With its tight harmonies and featured slide guitar, the song is sure to be a big hit. Check out their live performances of “Holy Ghost Fire” and “Strike Gold” on the Preston and Steve YouTube channel! Speaking of Jacky Bam Bam…he, Casey, and Kyle checked in from Casey's Big Adventure to hang with Larkin Poe as well. Just outside Los Angeles, Jacky was a bit bummed because he wanted to go record shopping with Rebecca and Megan next time they were in town…better luck next time Jacky! (Go enjoy the pacific ocean…) Jacky asked Larkin Poe who the best band they have shared the stage with has been thus far. While it was hard to decide, Rebecca landed on Bob Seger. Touring arenas with him was a huge moment for them. Another huge moment; Elton John said Self Made Man was one of his favorite albums of the year when it came out. Let's see if he says the same about their new record, “Blood Harmony.” We think he may! Thanks to Larkin Poe for stopping by, and also for giving us the world debut of their new song! We can't wait to see what's in store for them, and also to see them again!

Episode 5 of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2022 series Today Louise and Elaine with the creatives and cast of Blood Harmony at the Traverse Theatre. Our first in person Podcast recording since February 2020. BLOOD HARMONY When siblings sing together, the music is special. All the more beautiful for the bond between them, it's called a blood harmony. Sisters Anna, Maia, and Chloe have lost their mum. And now, thrown together in the attic of their childhood home, they must work out what happens next. High-flying Anna wants to swoop in and problem solve, whilst chaotic Maia can't stop cracking jokes, and caught in the middle is Chloe, who cared for their mum at the end of her life. The trio have never seen eye-to-eye, and without Mum holding them together, what's to stop them falling apart? Featuring songs from Atlantic Records artists The Staves, beautiful harmonies and stunning visuals, Blood Harmony is an uplifting and universal story about moving on, and the healing power of family – love them or loathe them. Created by award-winning theatre company ThickSkin (How Not to Drown, Eavesdropping), this is a show for anyone who's ever shared tears and laughter to cope with loss. A show that'll make you want to pull your family closer, and hold them tighter. At long last (longer than it should have been because...well because time is a social construct really) Dave Hause returns for his second appearance on (*both laugh*)! When last we spoke (Episode 25 if you're keeping score at home), Dave had just self-released a double EP of Patty Griffin and Paddy Costello/Dillinger Four covers. We were still in Pandemic Year One and that project served as a fun and unique way to stay productive and creative and to dip his toes into navigating through the "new normal" waters. Fast-forward eighteen months (yes, really...18 months, almost to the day...remember when I said time was a social construct) and it was time for round two! The centerpiece of this installment was Dave's latest solo album, "Blood Harmony." It was released last October on his own record label, but because the vinyl is still trickling its way out, I don't feel QUITE so bad about catching up at the six month post-release mark. "Blood Harmony" found Dave and his brother Tim working together again, this time in Nashville. The duo and producer Will Hoge (himself not only a brilliant songwriter and masterful producer but a veteran of this show as well - see Episode 12) holed up at Sound Emporium with a slew of heavy-hitting studio musicians (Sadler Vaden, Tom Bukovac, Garry Tallent!!?!?!). "Blood Harmony" finds Hause running headlong down the Americana path that he'd been at least tip-toeing down for the last decade. We talked about the album, and the recording, and Will Hoge's greatness, and the idea of "chasing the song." We also talked about his ongoing partnership with Tim (including work on Tim's own upcoming debut solo album) and about therapy and about touring in a never-ending pandemic and a lot more, as we are want to do. We also talked about his ongoing partnership with Tim (including work on Tim's own upcoming debut solo album) and about therapy and about touring in a never-ending pandemic and a lot more, as we are want to do. Phil, Jake and Jason are reunited with bud-of-the-pod Dave Hause to rank pickles and Sir Topham Hatt (from Thomas & Friends) on the List of Every Damn Thing. Plus coffee gets re-ranked!Follow Dave on Instagram (@davehause), Twitter (@hausedave) and Facebook (DaveHauseMusic). We love his critically-acclaimed new album Blood Harmony, and so will you (it's on Spotify & Apple Music). Hopefully you can see him play live near you!If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Here's Dave's USA Today piece about Taylor Swift being “infinitely more punk rock” than him. Jason and Jake praise the song “Gary” from Dave's new record, because it's an incredible song. We note that our last episode featured Dave's brother Tim Hause. The two brothers collaborated on Blood Harmony, as well as on Tim Hause's recently-recorded album (coming out later this year). We successfully deduce that sauerkraut is both a pickled and fermented food (the same goes for kimchi). Here's a Southern Living article about how Texans– and only Texans– eat pickles at the movie theater. We discuss different types of pickles, such as cornichons and bread-and-butter pickles (the latter of which apparently got their name because they were good for bartering for staple food items). Here's Hannibal Buress' pickle juice bit wherein he confesses "I have a surplus of pickle juice in my apartment". We talk about Dave being a transplant from Philadelphia. Did you know that the city's name literally means "Brother Love" in Greek? Why doesn't this get mentioned more? Guy Fieri is the prime minister of Sonoma County, where Phil lives. Phil says that all businesses in the county have a picture of Fieri on the wall, and he eats and drinks for free by law. Jason uses “onion murder” as an argument for ranking pickles higher than onions. Research shows that a guy in India was once killed for onions, but it's not fair to blame the onions for this. Maybe the guy who died in a tragic accident while harvesting onions could be blamed on the onions. Phil ponders on the nature of Thomas' sentience, and whether his consciousness is a gestalt of the train itself and the humans that operate it. Jake compares it to Voltron. Sir Tophamm Hatt is originally from The Railway Series books by Wilbert & Christopher Awdry, but our frame of reference is mostly the Thomas & Friends TV show (featuring, of course, the titular star Thomas the Tank Engine). Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Patrick Stewart and Brian Cox are our nominees for portraying a live-action Topham Hatt. We shout-out some of our favorite coffee companies: Time & Tide Coffee (Biddeford, ME), Timeless Coffee (Oakland, CA) and Black Oak Coffee (Ukiah, CA). We also give praise to the Blue Danube Coffee House on Clement Street in San Francisco. Phil and Jake are joined by singer-songwriter Tim Hause to rank volcanoes and the song “American Pie” by Don McLean on the List of Every Damn Thing.Follow Tim on Instagram (@timbillhause) and Twitter (@timBILLhause). Check out his collaboration with brother Dave Hause on the fantastic new record “Blood Harmony” (which you can also find on Spotify & Apple Music). And see them play live near you! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Phil looked up people pronouncing “human” like “yu-man” and apparently it's how people in NYC, Philadelphia and some places in Ireland say it. Phil is from rural California and although he used to live in NYC, he moved there as an adult. This clip features a scientific explanation of how Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox created the Grand Teton mountain range by roughhousing. We discuss a number of volcanic-relevant geographical locations including Mount St. Helens, The Road to Hana, Mount Shasta, Panum Crater, Pompeii, Arenal Volcano and Long Valley Caldera. Dr. Pimple Popper is a dermatologist who makes videos of pimples being popped. Look, the world isn't always that great, this sort of stuff is out there. We briefly discuss a volcano that erupted in the 19th Century, affecting global weather patterns and creating a year without a summer. The eruption in question was that of Mount Tambora in 1815 (the Year Without a Summer was the following year). It's also hypothesized that a similar thing happened in the 6th Century. Joe Vs. the Volcano is a 1990 film by John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck) starring Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan (in multiple roles). It's a fun movie that lost a lot of money. Phil talks about underwater animals that survive from “geothermal” heat, but the real term is "hydrothermal vent". These animals have a whole little ecosystem that doesn't need sunlight. They live in one of the few truly alien environments on Earth. Jake mentions the use of McLean's song in Black Widow, but we can't remember the name of the character Yelena Belova. “The Day the Music Died” is a reference to Feb. 3, 1959, when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & Big Bopper died in a plane crash.  Jake mentions the 1969 Altamont Free Concert, which is considered one of the end-markers of the 1960s. He incorrectly refers to the killing of a woman at the concert, when in fact it was an eighteen-year-old man (named Meredith) who was stabbed to death. Three other people also died at the concert. Songs we compare “American Pie” to include “Black Betty” by Ram Jam, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds, “Cats In the Cradle” by Harry Chapin, “You're So Vain” by Carly Simon, “The First Cut is the Deepest” by Rod Stewart, “Night Moves” by Bob Seager, “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon & Garfunkel, “The Saga Begins” by “Weird Al” Yankovic, “Cherry Pie” by Warrant, “Sweet Potato Pie” by Domino, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick and “Roly Poly” by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. We compare it to a few Billy Joel songs (“We Didn't Start the Fire”, “Piano Man” and “Only the Good Die Young”). There's been an ongoing reassessment of Billy Joel (since about 2009 when this LA times blog defended him). Here's a Vice defense, and here's Jon Gabrus' "High and Mighty" Billy Joel episode. We also discuss Taylor Swift's “All Too Well” and the “American Pie” cover by Madonna. Don McLean's twenty-seven year-old girlfriend is Paris Dylan. She and former NBA player Chris "Birdman" Andersen were both victims of a catfishing scheme a few years ago that's too weird to even explain but here's an honest attempt. Here's the Cocaine & Rhinestones episode on the Louvin Brothers (which talks about blood harmonies). We never say the name of their band, but when we talk about Matt Hock & Dave Walsh we're of course talking about Space Cadet.
