This week, we set the way back machine for 1996…with a stop off in 1999, which is the setting for the new book by Kyle Wiltshire and Jay Watson, The Dead Rock Stars. Coincidentally, then, we welcome co-author Kyle Wiltshire as our Third Lad! Kyle is a husband, father, and writer who has seen U2 eleven times. He tries to paint like Bob Ross and enjoys talking about the Star Wars universe on a very deep level. He loves pop culture and prides himself on being able to name the year any movie from the 1980s or '90s was released. P.S. We put him to the test with a brand new O3L game, “B-Movie…or Be Dead!” About The Dead Rock Stars: What if famous rock stars from the past, those who died young, in sudden and tragic ways, actually faked their deaths to become secret agents? Welcome to the world of The Dead Rock Stars, the heroes we never knew we had. The Dead Rock Stars is a tale about Cole Denton, a young tech genius who discovers the secret world of rock star secret agents. He is tasked with saving the world from an unknown threat—one that's closer to home than either Elvis Presley or the team can imagine. But can they beat the clock before it strikes midnight on December 31, 1999? In a twisting and nostalgic story, The Dead Rock Stars is an alternate history, placed squarely in the realm of real-world events, that happened without anyone knowing. Brimming with pop culture references for music lovers of every generation, the novel's fast and hilarious plot will keep readers guessing at every turn. Learn more about your ad choices. Leading Beyond the Herd: Disruptive Ideas for Success with Roy OsingBeing Different: A Unique Approach to Success in Life and BusinessIn a world boxed in within norms, rules, and 'being better', Roy Osing, also known as 'Be Different or Be Dead' guy, paints a different picture about achieving success. He asserts that uniqueness and differentiation matter more than being 'number one'. He stresses that individuals and businesses should focus on their defined roles and look inward to set their standards rather than obsessing over competitors and comparing. For individuals wanting to excel in their careers or lives, he suggests looking for mentors who provide practical insights and have attained personal achievements. He also proposes moving away from 'textbook knowledge' and focusing on practical application. Roy espouses being attached to those you serve, your customers or people, and continuously finding unique ways to meet their needs. Lastly, among his key takeaways were avoiding 'gargling Google' to prevent imitation and nurturing the ability to tell one's story differently.Time Line00:00 Introduction00:00 The Importance of Being Unique00:27 The Problem with Conformity01:48 The Role of Education in Shaping Mindsets02:41 The Power of Disruption08:02 The Impact of Language and Self-Talk08:49 The Art of Differentiation12:11 The Influence of Personal Background23:17 The Importance of Performance and Communication26:02 The Success of Eliminating Dumb Rules26:50 The Power of Memorable Expressions27:14 The Goal: A Billion Dollars in Annual Revenue27:40 The Strategy: Increase Customer Engagement28:20 The Execution: Planning on the Run29:01 The Result: A Billion Dollars Worth of Value29:36 The Method: Killing Dumb Rules and Cutting the Crap29:54 The Language of Business: Increasing Viscosity32:39 The Journey: From Bully to Business Success34:57 The Focus: On the Customer, Not the Competition38:33 The Differentiation: Moving Away from the Mass45:31 The Payoff: Living the Life and Paying it Forward49:52 The Future: Being Different and Changing the World

Self-described “lifelong hustler,” Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz, is better known by his stage name Fantastic Negrito, and makes “black roots music for everyone” - blues with a giant undercurrent of punkass. Fantastic Negrito's songs tell of a hard life with some complete do-overs and a few near-death experiences. Coming from a crossroads with optional deals, his music might be informed just as much by California funk-punk (Bad Brains and Fishbone), hip hop, thrash metal, punk, Prince and his self-taught ways - specifically Dirty Mind (according to this Guardian interview) and the blues records he'd heard as a kid, visiting family in southern Virginia. Lately, his tunes have been placed and licensed for TV and film series (Empire, Hand of God, and in the case of his song “Working Poor,” Bernie Sanders' political campaign.) But back in the early 2000's he had co-founded a record label, which grew into Oakland-based multimedia creative collective, the Blackball Universe cooperative, fed and financed with the publishing royalties of his own musical alter egos Chocolate Butterfly, Me and This Japanese Guy and Blood Sugar X. Fantastic Negrito's 2018 record, Please Don't Be Dead, references his own near-fatal car crash, and is driven in part by political and social issues in these broken and fractured times. The record is full of heavy riffs, cheeky songwriting, playful musicianship, and a whole lot of surviving. It brings Fantastic Negrito to the studio to play some of these tunes. -by Caryn Havlik Watch the individual songs below:

CMAT might look like one of those specialized tests you have to take to get into a post-graduate program, but this stage name is actually the initials of Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, a Dublin pop singer whose cleverly-titled debut LP If My Wife New I'd Be Dead was a hit in Ireland last year. With cultural references that range from Belgian football manager Vincent Kompany to Gilmore Girls, (she also loves Patsy Cline), CMAT knows how to take a deep dive down a topical rabbit hole and make it into relatable pop. She distills her maximalist tendencies down to an unplugged, intimate setting, playing songs from her brand-new record, Crazymad, For Me, in-studio. Set list: “Where Are Your Kids Tonight?”, “Rent”, “I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby” I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby! by CMAT

In this Roots Radio episode, co-hosts Lisa Bonta Sumii and Richie Nuñez feature singer/songwriter, Fantastic Negrito.Fantastic Negrito takes you on a journey, portraying a narrative of triumph over adversity. His journey is a representation of a musician from Oakland who experienced the zenith of securing a million-dollar record contract, plummeted into the abyss after a life-threatening car accident that resulted in a coma, and is now witnessing a resurgence that has brought him from the alleys of Oakland to international fame. This man's life story is as compelling as his music because his experiences shape his sound. The music, inspired by a life full of trials, is an expression of black roots music, woven with elements of slide guitar, drums, and piano. The tunes convey an atmosphere of urgency, desperation, and tension.Negrito earned nationwide recognition when he clinched the first NPR Tiny Desk contest in 2015. He followed up this success with Grammy wins for all three of his albums: The Last Days of Oakland (2017), Please Don't Be Dead (2019), and Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? (2021). The most recent album includes collaborations with fellow Tiny Desk winner Tank (Tank and the Bangas) and the Bay Area icon E-40.Negrito's journey has been full of exciting turns in recent years. His independent record label, Storefront Records in West Oakland, launched his two newest projects. White Jesus Black Problems (2022) and Grandfather Courage (2023) explore the forbidden love story of his ancestors — a white Scottish indentured servant and an enslaved African man on a Virginia tobacco plantation in the 1750s. White Jesus Black Problems is accompanied by a 42-minute video available for viewing on YouTube.Additionally, Negrito has initiated The Storefront Market, an outdoor community market located at Storefront Records. The tenth iteration of this market recently partnered with Thrive City at The Chase Center, home to The Golden State Warriors in San Francisco. This partnership offered a platform for various Bay Area artists and vendors to showcase their work in the city.Lisa Bonta Sumii, LCSW, CSW | Athlete Mindset podcast host:Lisa is a psychotherapist and mental performance consultant to high-performing athletes at the youth, collegiate, Olympic-hopeful, and professional levels. “Grandfather Courage” Fantastic Negrito may have been born in Massachusetts, but he's a Bay Area guy through and through. The 8th of 15 kids, he moved to Oakland as a twelve year old and immediately immersed himself in the sounds of the 510 and the 415. He was no stranger to punk rock clubs like Berkeley's Gillman or the underground hip hop clubs of Oakland. He liked it all—metal, indie rock, soul, punk and jazz and the legend goes that he learned to play by sneaking into the music classrooms at Cal, even though he wasn't a student. Using his birth name of Xavier, in 1993 he signed a deal with Prince's former Manager's Lexington House Records who had a distribution deal with Interscope. Three years later he put out his debut album, simply titled Xavier. A horrifying car crash in 1999 nearly killed him but after waking up from a three week coma, he started to see his career in a totally different way. That new angle wouldn't take hold until 2014, seven years after a self-imposed exile of not making music anymore. He emerged in his 40s as Fantastic Negrito, a personae that made what he called Black roots music for everyone. And, it turns out, everyone was into it. Fantastic Negrito pulled off an improbable hat trick, winning the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2016 for The Last Days Of Oakland, repeating that feat for 2019's Please Don't Be Dead and doing it again for 2020's Have You Lost Your Mind? His new album Grandfather Courage is the acoustic reimagining of his 2022 album White Jesus Black Problems and it's nothing short of brilliant. It's indie rock soul, it's low-fi blues, it's big, it's grand, it's ambitious and it's one of the richer musical experiences you'll have all year. www.fantasticnegrito.com www.alexgreenonline.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

The small business viking, Roy Osing, joins the show today to discuss what business owners can do in order to thrive. His upcoming book, Be Different or Be Dead, shines a light on the biggest challenge companies of all sizes are facing. With a billion businesses to choose from, how does a company differentiate themselves in the market? Roy says it can be done by making one simple statement, he calls it ‘the only' statement. He encourages companies to think about what they're truly good at, what's unique about them. He says if you can't figure that out, your business is as good as dead. Every company should be able to fill in the blank of: we are the only ones that ___________. That statement will definitively tell people why they should do business with you over another company. However, don't feel like your work is done once you've figured that out. The world is always changing, and so your ‘the only' statement will have to be able to shift along the way. In addition to that, Roy says to set bold objectives, as they'll really help in fueling your innovation. What You'll Learn: The biggest challenge that businesses are facing. What 3 questions every business owner should be asking. How to develop an executable game plan. What it means to be truly innovative. Favorite Quote: “Every business needs to think through how they're special, and what their competitive advantage is.” -Roy Osing ______________________________________________________________________ How To Get Involved: Matthew Meehan and Luigi Rosabianca possess, between them, a treasure trove of insight and strategic advice for ambitious business owners. It's not enough to be the best at what you do. As a leader, you need to be the only one who does what you do! This is the idea that Roy Osing, the author of Be Different or Be Dead, lives by. Roy is a former president, CMO, and entrepreneur with over 40 years of successful and unmatched executive leadership experience in every aspect of a business. As President of a major data and internet company, his leadership and audacious ‘unheard-of ways' took the company from its early stage to $1 Billion in annual sales. This episode explores how leaders can achieve billions as a benchmark by really switching things around from what we're used to. Let's turn some thinking on its head, dive into the episode, and learn how to be different and audacious. In this episode: Learn how Roy's experience as a system analyst in a changing working world informed his leadership style of being different. Roy talks about the importance of changing our approach away from following textbook guidance and focusing on execution - and how his book, https://www.amazon.com/BE-DiFFERENT-dead-Audacious-Unheard/dp/1631957163#:~:text=Details-,BE%20DiFFERENT%20or%20be%20dead%3A%20The%20Audacious%20'Unheard%2Dof,way%20and%20achieve%20staggering%20success. (Be Different or Be Dead), helps leaders move in that direction. Roy explains how driving topline revenue was the ultimate motivation for thinking and doing things differently. Roy flips the concept of “leadership is changing” into “leadership MUST change.” To grow further faster, we need different leaders who do things differently. The future is messy. Roy reveals that leaders need to absorb and react to change to be successful. Learn how goals and innovations are only such when you don't know how to achieve them. Create, don't copy. Key Takeaways: We need to get back into “dialogue” and learn from each other Textbooks can not inform you of execution If it doesn't drive topline revenue, then don't do it Be the only one who does what you do 20% of your idea should be on plan, 80% should be on execution Create, don't copy - if you know how to do it, then it's not a goal; it's a task Tweetable Quotes: “People are guided more by textbook readings than by what works… The textbook may give you the plan, but it will not inform you on execution.” - Roy Osing “You don't want, merely, to be the best of the best. You want to be the only one who does what you do.” - Roy Osing (Jerry Garcia) “If you know how to do something, then it can't be innovative.” - Roy Osing Connect with Roy on https://linkedin.com/in/royosing (LinkedIn) and https://www.facebook.com/roy.osing (Facebook).
