Send us a textIn 2017, Colorado guitarist and singer/songwriter James Dumm came up with an idea for a supergroup. He had played songs from The Allman Brothers Band with his Denver jam tribute, Mountain Jam, and he wanted to create another tribute band featuring an all-star lineup. Thus, The Other Brothers came to be.The core lineup consists of Dumm on electric and slide guitar, Rob Eaton Jr. (also from Mountain Jam) on electric guitar, Todd Smallie on bass, Bill McKay on keys, Will Trask on percussion, and Mark Levy and John Michel on drums.Among their performance accomplishments, Michel frequently tours with the John Oates Band, and McKay toured with Smallie in the Derek Trucks Band, for which Smallie was a core member. The band's final album, Already Free, which features Smallie on bass and backing vocals, won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.Meanwhile, Dumm and McKay play with Johnny and the Mongrels, Dumm with Drunken Hearts, Eaton Jr. with Brother's Keeper, Levy with Circles Around the Sun, and Trask with High Hawks. The lineup is flexible, since not every member can make it to every show due to their other projects. Trask's role as a percussionist is especially flexible, as the choice is meant to represent choices in the band's later career, and Jiho Han, bassist for Judo Chop, will sub for Smallie in various upcoming shows. "The Sphere in Vegas: U2's Sonic Odyssey and the Future of Concert Venues"Larry Mishkin is joined by great friend of the show, Alex Wellins to catch up and talk about a Grateful Dead concert held at Poly Pavilion on November 20th, 1971. Larry talks about the significance of the show, including the band's transition in music style, notable songs played, and the presence of famous basketball player Bill Walton in the audience. Later, Alex discusses recent concerts they attended, highlighting U2's performance at The Sphere in Las Vegas, known for its immersive audiovisual experience, and another show at the historic Castro Theater in San Francisco featuring the band St. Paul and the Broken Bones. Both Larry and Alex express enthusiasm about these diverse musical experiences..Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast Grateful DeadNovember 20, 1971Pauley Pavillion – UCLAL.A.Grateful Dead Live at Pauley Pavilion - University of California on 1971-11-20 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive By late 1971 Dead's transformation from Primal Dead to Americana Dead was well on it's way. This concert is a great snapshot of that time, this show being more in the Americana camp with the a killer 25 minute jammed out Other One (including its Bill Kreutzman drum solo lead in) really being the only true nod to the Primal era . Also, the band was in transition as Pigpen missed the show as part of his descent into alcohol related illnesses that eventually took him in March 1973. Keith had been playing with the band since February but Mickey began his “leave” in February after night one of the Capitol Theater run. So this night is just five of them up on stage playing their hearts out for the fine students of UCLA and other Deadheads ( then a very brand new “thing” having just been recognized by the band in the liner message inside the Grateful Dead album stating: “DEAD FREAKS UNITE! WHO ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU? HOW ARE YOU? Send us your name and address and we'll keep you informed”) One fact that should be obvious given the venue and the time – an unknown UCLA student and want-a-be college basketball player, Bill Walton was in attendance along with some of his Bruins teammates for this first ever Dead show at Pauley Pavilion, famed home court for the UCLA Bruins, a team that following the amazing successes of Lew Alcindor (Kareem) and Sidney Wicks, now was being led for the first time by Bill and his teammates Jamaal Wilkes and Greg Lee (spoiler alert: Bill has some success at UCLA too). Bill, of course, went on to be an NBA All-Star and a regular attendee of Dead shows and, as Alex can attest, not unusual to see him at a West Coast dead show right up until the end – kind of hard to miss a 7 foot deadhead with his red hair and tie dye apparel. Rumor has it when they knew he was going to be at a show the band would set up a basketball hoop backstage and that Bruce Hornsby was a hooper too. INTRO: Bertha Track No. 1 3:30 – 4:37 Great traditional opener although it was known to pop up in different spots during shows from time to time. At this point, it is still “new” having been debuted earlier that year, on February 18th at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester. Never released on a studio album, but it is the opening tune on the Dead's live album, “Grateful Dead” a/k/a Skull and Roses (or Phil's preferred name, “Skull Fuck” which was promptly rejected by their label, Warner Bros) on September 24, 1971. From shows in NYC at the Fillmore East and the Hammerstein Ballroom in the Manhattan Center (plus Johnny B. Goode from Winterland – couldn't completely ignore the west coast). SHOW #1: Tennessee Jed Track No. 5 0:45 – 1:46 This is one of the “new” ones played in this show. Along with Mexicali Blues, One More Saturday Night, Ramble On Rose and Jack Straw had all just been played for the first ever just two months earlier on October 19, 1971 at the Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis – also Keith's first show. A tune that more than most really captures the change in the band's direction as you have Garcia previously of Dark Star, St. Stephen and Eleven fame twanging away, musically and vocally, on a song with a feel that is a cross between country, western and a dash of rock n roll. Deadheads of Alex's and my era will note how much quicker the tempo is in this early version and Garcia's noticeable energy evident from his strong vocal performance. Played 436 times in concert, putting it at No. 15 of the list of the Dead's most played tunes.1st (again) on Oct. 19, 1971 in MPLSLast on July 8, 1995 at Soldier Field, Chicago A great sing along tune that the Deadheads always enjoyed, normally found in the first set, towards the middle. SHOW #2: Jack Straw Track No. 10 :12 – 1:20 As just mentioned, this another “new” one just two months old. Everyone loves Jack Straw, even the Band which is why it checks in at No. on list of most tunes played by the Band with 476 performances (last one on July 8, 1995 at Soldier Field). But in this early version, there is a little bit of a change from the version we all know and love. First, thing to know it is a tune by Hunter and Weir. Garcia did not write it although he sang it with Weir in a “trading off of verses” style. Second, in these early versions, before the Europe '72 tour, Weir sang all the verses like we just heard, “I just jumped the watchman, right outside the fence” was always sung by Jerry, but here, Weir sings it. Not sure of the reason for the change, but I like it a lot better with Jerry singing his verses (the other being “Gotta go to Tulsa, first train we can ride”). First time with Jerry on vocals was May 3, 1972 at the Olympia Theater in Paris, that also just happens to be the version of the song that wound up on the Europe '72 album. Although in its earlier years the song would appear in either first or second set, after their 1975 hiatus it became an almost exclusive first set song. And after Brent joined the band, almost always a show opener. Home to the more than occasional Phil base bomb, it was one of the Band's most popular tunes and a great way to open any show (especially if they had just opened with Bertha the night before so you got to catch them both!). SHOW #3: Ramble On Rose Track No. 18 0:00 – 1:28 Last of the “new” ones that we will feature today. Just like Tennessee Jed, upbeat, good energy, Jerry and the boys are having fun, like with any new creation. Still working out all the details, the james, keeping track of the lyrics and Jerry has not yet developed his signature growl on “goodbye mamma and poppa, goodbye jack and jill”. What I really like about this version and why I chose a clip from the beginning of the tune is to hear Keith's piano accompaniment that works so well with this song and adds another layer of creativity to the mix. Garcia always seemed to get energy and inspiration from the band's keyboard players and Keith, even this early in his career, is no exception. After its introduction on Oct. 19, 1971 in Minny, played a total of 319 times, good for 39th place on the all time list, just behind US Blues and just ahead of Don't Ease Me In (really?). Last played on June 27, 1995 at the Palace of Auburn Hills, MI. SHOW #4: You Win Again Track No. 20 1:12 – 2:21 "You Win Again" is a 1952 song by Hank Williams. In style, the song is a blues ballad and deals with the singer's despair with his partner. The song has been widely covered, including versions by Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, the Grateful Dead, Charley Pride, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones. Hank Williams recorded "You Win Again" on July 11, 1952—one day after his divorce from Audrey Williams was finalized. Like "Cold, Cold Heart," the song was likely inspired by his tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife, "You Win Again" was released as the B-side to "Settin' the Woods on Fire", primarily because up-tempo, danceable numbers were preferable as A-sides for radio play and for the valuable jukebox trade. Nonetheless, "You Win Again" peaked at number ten on the Most Played in C&W Juke Boxes chart, where it remained for a single week. Over a time period of less than one year, the Dead played You Win Again 24 times in concert, the first on November 11, 1971 at the Municipal Auditorium in Austin, TX (this show in L.A. was only the third time it had been played) and the last on September 16, 1972 at The Music Hall in Boston. A version of the song was released on the Europe '72 album (second album side), from their show on May 24, 1972 at The Strand Lyceum in London, one of the final shows on that tour. JGB recorded a version of the song in 1976 during the Reflections album sessions but not played live again. It was briefly revived by The Dead with Dylan in 2003. OUTRO: Going Down The Road Feeling Bad Track No. 23 3:45 – 5:12 "Going Down The Road Feeling Bad" (also known as the "Lonesome Road Blues") is a traditional American folk song, "a white blues of universal appeal and uncertain origin" The song was recorded by many artists through the years. The first known recording is from 1923 by Henry Whitter, an Appalachian singer,[2][3]as "Lonesome Road Blues". The earliest versions of the lyrics are from the perspective of an inmate in prison with the refrain, "I'm down in that jail on my knees" and a reference to eating "corn bread and beans."[4] The song has been recorded by many artists such as Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Skeeter Davis, Elizabeth Cotten, and the Grateful Dead, and the song is featured in To Bonnie from Delaney, "Mountain Jam", Born and Raised World Tour, The Grapes of Wrath, and Lucky Stars.Others who recorded it include Cliff Carlisle (also as "Down in the Jail on My Knees"), Woody Guthrie (also as "Blowin' Down This Road" or "I Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way"), Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Roy Hall, Elizabeth Cotten and the Grateful Dead, Delaney and Bonnie, Canned Heat and Dillard Chandler. Dead played it 302 times (No. 46 on the most played tunes list just behind a tie between Mama Tried and Terrapin and just ahead of Birdsong). 1st time on October 10, 1970 at Colden Auditorium, part of Queens College in Queens, NY.Last played on July 5, 1985 at the Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, MO. During the time period of this show it was almost always paired with Not Fade Away (as made famous at the end of the Grateful Dead album). In later years, when Alex and I were regulars on tour, it would show up as a second set tune, usually, but not always after Drums/Space. A very upbeat tune that the band obviously loved playing the crowd loved hearing. For our purposes, a great way to end the show and say goodbye and HAPPY THANKSGIVING.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Oliver Hazard over Zoom video!Waterville, Ohio indie-folk outfit Oliver Hazard captivates listeners with their unique blend of delicate arrangements and sturdy melodies on their new self-titled album released today with Nettwerk. Listen to the album that's sure to win hearts with its introspective lyrics. The album is the work of 3 individual singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, who share an organic connection in the craft -- sensibilities that yield music that's harmonic, haunting and also ambitious and surprising. "This album feels different than anything we've done in the past. We're very simple people, all three of us. I think the album reflects that, and I hope it captures something you probably can't describe yourself, but that speaks to you,” the band shares. “And as far as the message, it's just shared experiences.”About Oliver Hazard:The story of Waterville, OH indie-folk trio Oliver Hazard - Michael Belazis (vocals, guitar) and Devin East (vocals, guitar), joined by Nate Miner (keys, vocals) - is the digital age's version of classic band mythmaking. One member of the band came home to Ohio after leading camping trips in California and decided to make an album with two childhood friends. They won a Facebook raffle to record one song at a studio. Instead, they played their whole album straight through once, resulting in their debut LP 34 N River (2018). The Fader called the album a “folk-pop masterpiece” and the band was booked at Bonnaroo and Mountain Jam shortly thereafter. In 2019, the band released their 6 track EP, The Flood, which Billboard called a “souvenir.” This brings the band to their sophomore, self-titled album (July 2023), featuring music from the band's recent Northern Lights EP, plus five additional songs. We want to hear from you! "With the help of God and true friends, I come to realize / I still had two strong legs and even wings to fly." Those are among some of the first lines of the first song ("Ain't Wastin' Time No More") from "Eat a Peach," the double album by the Allman Brothers Band, which was released in early 1972. The lines and the song -- heck, SEVERAL of the songs -- underscore a lot of what the Allman Brothers were all about throughout their career -- but perhaps never more so than at this point. They were a brotherhood -- but one that was shattered by the 1971 death of leader Duane Allman in a motorcycle accident in Macon, Ga. But the band soldiered on, finishing an album of Allman classics like "Blue Sky" and "Melissa" (which Gregg Allman performed at his big brother's funeral). "Eat a Peach" also showcases the Allman Brothers' true magic: on stage. Live versions of "One Way Out," "Trouble No More" and the epic (33+ minutes long!) "Mountain Jam" give us still today a taste of why they were considered one of the best live bands of all time. Tragedy and loss would continue to follow the Allman Brothers, yet they found a way through it. "Bearing sorrow, having fun" as Gregg sings on "Melissa." Sounds about right.

Einige Songs entstanden im New Yorker Musiktheater "The Fillmore East". _____ Über diese Songs vom Album “Eat A Peach” wird im Podcast gesprochen: 11:17 Mins - "Ain't Wastin‘ Time No More" 15:27 Mins - Les Brers In A Minor" 18:43 Mins - "Melissa" 23:40 Mins - "Mountain Jam" 30:23 Mins - "One Way Out" 36:08 Mins - "Blue Sky" _____ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen: 25:18 Mins - "There Is A Mountain" von Donovan _____ Links zum Podcast: Englischer Wikipedia Artikel mit vielen Links zu den Songs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eat_a_Peach#Personnel Deutscher Wikipedia Artikel: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eat_a_Peach The Allman Brothers Band - One Way Out - At Fillmore East 1971 (HQ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJ9twEldw_M Duane Allman Story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggNE5Iw27d0 Allman Brothers YouTube Cannel https://www.youtube.com/c/allmanbrothersmv ____ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? In this episode, Michael and Clifford interview Dave Brandwein. Dave Brandwein is the frontman, guitarist, and one of the creative forces behind the phenomenal band Turkuaz. www.Turkuazband.com Balancing male-female harmonies, strutting guitars, wild horn arrangements, and interminable grooves, a spirit takes shape on stage nightly for Turkuaz via larger-than-life performances. Among numerous critical plaudits, The New Yorker claimed, “[Turkuaz] delivers horn-filled funk incorporating elements of R&B, psychedelic pop, gospel, Afro-pop, New Wave, classic rock, and just about any genre that gets people dancing.” The Brooklyn-based nonet—Dave Brandwein [guitar, vocals], Taylor Shell [bass], Craig Brodhead [guitar, keys], Michelangelo Carubba [drums], Chris Brouwers [trumpet, keys], Greg Sanderson [tenor sax], Josh Schwartz [baritone sax, vocals], Sammi Garett [vocals], and Shira Elias [vocals]—ignite an explosion of energy punctuated by neon hues, deft musicality, and show-stopping singalongs on their newest EP, Kuadrochrome. Touring incessantly in support of four full-length studio albums, EPs and live releases, they’ve lit up stages everywhere from Bonnaroo, Hulaween, Okeechobee, Electric Forest, and Mountain Jam to Telluride Jazz, High Sierra, and Lock’n, in between gracing stages at legendary spots such as Red Rocks, Terminal 5, and The Fillmore, to name a few. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Bernard Fitzgerald over Zoom video! Michael Bernard Fitzgerald is a Canadian singer/songwriter who has collected an audience of fans across North America drawn to simple honest words and a genuine smile. Having released 4 full-length albums to date, Fitzgerald has spent his career since 2006 creating music, touring, developing as a songwriter, and connecting with audiences. Fitzgerald’s unique and innovative ideas coupled with his inherent warmth allow him to engage with people in a way that always leaves them meaningfully connected. After over a decade of working with labels, creating songs with top-tier L.A. songwriters and producers including Jon Levine (Drake, Dua Lipa), Brian West (Maroon 5, K’naan), and Dennis Herring (Ra Ra Riot, Modest Mouse) on About You, and spending some time in the charts with “I Wanna Make it With You” (2016) and “One Love” (2016), Fitzgerald has finally found himself and a calm, rooted, unfeigned sound at home. A career of touring across Canada and around the world sharing the stage with artists like Bryan Adams, Ben Harper, Dan Mangan, Sam Roberts, Joel Plaskett, and Kings of Leon has brought Michael back to his hometown, Calgary Alberta, to create his newest record Love Valley. If it was in a small club or larger theatre like the Vogue in Vancouver, the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, or on the big stages at a festivals like Calgary Folk Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Firefly Festival or Mountain Jam (to name a few) the spirit of honest connection with people has always existed in Fitzgerald’s performances.Today, he knows the value of time spent living in the moment and continues to go forward fostering the experience of connecting one song, one room, one fan at a time. Hello everyone, I am Chris Lipper from On The Bus Events Podcast. In this episode, I had the opportunity to interview Jay Blakesberg. He is an American, San Francisco-based, photographer and film maker. Since the summer of 2007, Blakesberg has produced and directed the live concert video at numerous music festivals including Rothbury, Lollapallooza, Summer Camp Festival, moe.down, Nateva Festival, Langerado and Mountain Jam. In the spring of 2009 Blakesberg went on the road with the re-united – Grateful Dead original members calling themselves "The Dead" as their tour photographer and video documentarian. The photographs from this tour were used in a print on demand tour book series, while over 15 short films created were used to document and market the tour. Currently Blakesberg continues to document Rock and Roll culture photographically while exploring numerous video projects. In 2015, Blakesberg published "Guitars That Jam—Portraits of the world's most storied rock guitars" which explores the history of many of the guitars in the Jamband scene. Featuring images from live concerts and outdoor festivals, this volume captures the personal connection between artist and instrument. Along with the guitar's make and model, each image is accompanied by a story from the musician detailing the instrument's special characteristics, as well as its significance to them and rock history. Including photographs of Neil Young, Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh,Trey Anastasio, Derek Trucks, and Warren Haynes to name just a few. Guitars That Jam features a foreword written by Warren Haynes and is an excellent photographic guide to the world of improvisational rock guitars

This week we present the third and final portion of the Grateful Dead's performance from the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Racecourse in Watkins Glen NY on July 28th, 1973. This may not be the best show of the year, but there is certainly some fine music here to recommend itself and to fuel many a thought as you listen. This section begins with a nice Stella Blue, and when you think well there is the Jerry Ballad, they go into a stunning 'Eyes of the World'. For my money the highlight of this set, this one features some amazing jams, especially after the chorus, with hints of 'Stronger than Dirt' and even 'Help on the Way'.. I hope you dig this as much as I did. Weir brings us down to earth with a shiny happy 'Sugar Magnolia' to follow, and then they give us a wonderful 'Sing Me Back Home' (patched however from the audience source and with a nasty cut at the end).. Not Fade Away' probably comes from the same audience patch, but features some high energy Keith on piano. The Mountain Jam featuring members of the Allman Brothers and the Band sounds better from a soundboard copy, and while it is a bit sloppy at times it is still a joy to hear again. While clearly not the most structured jam ever, this is still a fine way to celebrate the Days Between by listening to Jerry on this one. When the jam finally ends, you'd think the band would be finished.. but we get a Johnny B Goode encore (with a cut and somewhat muddled vocals).. despite its flaws, I hope you enjoy this week's Deadpod.. Grateful Dead Grand Prix Racecourse, Watkins Glen, NY (7/28/73) end of set 2: Stella Blue Eyes of the World Sugar Magnolia Sing Me Back Home Not Fade Away Mountain Jam Johnny B.
