After six studio albums and a Grammy, they released their next southern rock hit record at the beginning of the year, entitled "Bloom". Send us a textRebecca and Megan Lovell, the GRAMMY-winning sisters who compose Larkin Poe, call themselves “serial idea keepers.” This means they don't write every day. Instead, “we pull back on ideas until we are ready to write,” they say. This seasonal writing, as they and other songwriters like to call it, requires discipline: you have to resist the urge to write every day and only write during certain times. The advantage of this is that the words flow freely when it's time to write. But the Lovells bemoan this age of constant online stimulation, where artists are missing one critical element for creativity: boredom. “There's not enough boredom in our lives. We need time to daydream,” they say.Larkin Poe's latest album is called Bloom.Ed note: to clarify my intro, Larkin Poe won the 2024 GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Blues Album for their 2023 album Blood Harmony.

Grammy-winning Southern roots rock duo Larkin Poe (sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell) join us to chat about their creative process and their exciting forthcoming album, Bloom. PART ONE:'Tis the season! Scott and Paul chat about the classic Halloween songs. Is it time for a modern day resurgence of spooky music?PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, known to the world as duo Larkin PoeABOUT LARKIN POE:Blues-based rock duo Larkin Poe is comprised of multi-instrumentalist sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell. The Georgia natives began their career as an acoustic trio with their sister Jessica in 2004. That year they appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and won the Prairie Home National Teen Talent Competition. In 2008, the Lovell Sisters' song “Distance” won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest grand prize in the country genre. That same year, their song “Time to Grow” received honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition. After an impressive indie career that included two albums, as well as appearances at Bonaroo and the Grand Ole Opry, the Lovell Sisters disbanded. Rebecca and Megan reemerged as a duo pursuing a new sound that was steeped in the electric blues rather than acoustic and bluegrass music. Between 2010 and 2013 they released five indie EPs, two collaborative albums, and a live DVD. They released their debut album as a duo in 2014 and gained attention with the standout track “Don't.” In 2016 they reissued their debut studio album under the title Reskinned, which included new tracks such as “Trouble in Mind.” With the 2017 album Peach, Megan and Rebecca took the production reigns and continued to build a following. The next year's Venom & Faith reached #1 on Billboard's Blues Album chart and earned the sisters their first Grammy nomination. Their sixth studio album, Blood Harmony, garnered another Grammy nomination, which resulted in their first Grammy win in 2024. Larkin Poe's latest album is called Bloom and is set for release in January of 2025.

We at The Preston & Steve Show got to talk to one of the bands set to be at the always-glorious MMRBQ and Preston's favorite modern band in the world: Larkin Poe!  Rebecca and Megan Lovell's live performance in the studio this past fall still sticks with us, mainly because that is when they debuted their song “Strike Gold.” Our assistant producer Connor recently saw them live, and he loved the show. Rebecca and Megan had a lot of fun at it as well. They cannot wait to come back to Philadelphia, especially in September for the MMRBQ.  Having come up in the bluegrass scene, the sisters love playing festivals. There is a lot of collaboration and jamming at bluegrass festivals, which is a sight you don't often see with rock ones. However, we and the sisters hope that can change with the MMRBQ. Seeing Rebecca sing with Billy Idol would be quite a sight, but we want to see her harmonize the Safelite jingle with Steve and Casey while Preston plays drums.  We did get to talk with the sisters about their most recent album, Blood Harmony. Preston found that the album has a much larger sound compared to the previous ones, and according to Rebecca, that's ironically from stripping down the music. By being on the road, Larkin Poe has gotten comfortable as a four-piece band, which translated into the studio with them avoiding the layering of guitars and vocals on Blood Harmony.  It turns out, the sisters have a very close relationship with Elvis Costello. They met at a musical event, and he has since become a great mentor to them. He was the one who taught them not to simplify themselves or confine their music to a box. He believes that artists should curate the art they are passionate about, and, in turn, fans will respond with love.  Megan and Rebecca recently made their television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Preston was very happy about one of their song choices. They played “Bad Spell,” a song he describes as “stanky.” That is intended as a compliment!  The sisters are also close to WMMR's resident vampire Jacky Bam Bam. He has their personal cell numbers, and they can confirm what we have always known about him. They called him “one of the most precious of all the rock ‘n roll angels.”  Thanks to Rebecca and Megan for having a chat with us. We look forward to seeing them rock the stage at MMRBQ in September!

This is their story from home-schooling in Georgia to touring with their sister Jessica in the acoustic act the Lovell Sisters, to ultimately forging a new sound and backing Elvis Costello, Bright Eyes and more as they slowly gained traction on their own. The Every Brothers The Beach Boys Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart Neville Brothers. Wood Brothers Staple Singers. Bros. Landreth Brothers Gibb What they all have in common is family and the blood ties that go with it. Sisters and Brothers have always made exceptional music – usually because they started as kids in grade school and worked at their harmonies as they grew up.  It's second nature – like breathing. The bonus with Larkin Poe is they play like they sing..and walk a fine line between roots, blues, rock, and gospel. Rebecca and Megan bring with them stories and kind words about Canadian festivals and audiences. After all, they talk about being True North in their music. Larkin Poe joined the gang in-studio for an incredible performance and interview on Friday. For those that don't know, Larkin Poe is a roots rock band from north Georgia. Fronted by sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, their music features bluesy riffs and soulful vocals. The two graced us with their lovely presence and talked about their rock n' roll upbringing. They referred to themselves as “students of the blues.” They grew up on all things rock thanks to their parents, so they ditched their classical instruments and picked up “banjos and mandolins.” Well, thank goodness they did! Their sixth album comes out on the 11th of November and they actually gave the gang a sneak peek (dedicated especially to Jacky Bam Bam) of one of their new tracks, “Strike Gold.” It's so new, Rebecca even needed a lyric sheet! With its tight harmonies and featured slide guitar, the song is sure to be a big hit. Check out their live performances of “Holy Ghost Fire” and “Strike Gold” on the Preston and Steve YouTube channel! Speaking of Jacky Bam Bam…he, Casey, and Kyle checked in from Casey's Big Adventure to hang with Larkin Poe as well. Just outside Los Angeles, Jacky was a bit bummed because he wanted to go record shopping with Rebecca and Megan next time they were in town…better luck next time Jacky! (Go enjoy the pacific ocean…) Jacky asked Larkin Poe who the best band they have shared the stage with has been thus far. While it was hard to decide, Rebecca landed on Bob Seger. Touring arenas with him was a huge moment for them. Another huge moment; Elton John said Self Made Man was one of his favorite albums of the year when it came out. Let's see if he says the same about their new record, “Blood Harmony.” We think he may! Thanks to Larkin Poe for stopping by, and also for giving us the world debut of their new song! We can't wait to see what's in store for them, and also to see them again!

It is only fitting that one of our final podcasts of the first season gets incredibly deep! Rebecca and Megan Lovell, two of the most talented and creative artists behind Larkin Poe, are supremely wonderful humans to engage, perform, and work with. From being an “accidental band” to online sensations, while also writing and singing about some of the toughest themes, such as mental illness and sharing openly their personal and family struggles with the world, Larkin Poe is connected to legions of fervent fans who support and engage with them in powerful and dynamic ways. This vulnerable conversation covers so much ground and gets at the heart of the intense emotions we ALL feel as humans. We cover the origins of Larkin Poe, the reality checks they faced creating a new band from scratch, and their creative and personal journeys. We speak to the pressures and resilience they forged being female artists today, and that by creating “live” art, one has to be fully present. We also playfully discuss their musical origins which came from their foundations of classical music, and specifically the violin!PLUS, we tease some music from our upcoming collaborative album which will be released September 17!This conversation personally inspired me. It is a reminder that grit, positivity, gratefulness, and authenticity can lead to success on the levels that one wishes for themselves, not what others' limiting definitions are.You won't want to miss this episode of Nu Deco Unfiltered that brings incredible insight into Larkin Poe. We are so excited to share it with you and some of the magical music we made together!

“I think the choices that we've made in terms of genre have really been bent towards leveling a playing field. Because at a certain point you realize the number of female artists you can listen to in the rock sphere, especially the classic rock sphere, are so limited...So I know that had to be a driving factor for us; wanting to prove people wrong, to do something that felt a little bit incongruous." --Rebecca Lovell Rebecca and Megan Lovell, the incredibly talented sisters behind Larkin Poe, join RJ to talk about their musical evolution, from their early years as classical violinists to discovering classic rock in their teens, to forming the band and producing their own albums. Como solista, dejó éxitos como "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me", "Stop and Smell the Roses" y de manera muy especial "Texas In My Rear View Mirror", de tintes autobiográficos. Canciones como “A Change Is Gonna Come” pudieron costarle la vida a Sam Cooke. Escuchar audio

Surviving the Music Industry

Rebecca and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe are singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist sisters creating their brand of Roots Rock 'n' Roll: gritty, soulful, and flavored by their southern heritage. Originally from Atlanta and currently living in Nashville, they are descendants of tortured artist and creative genius Edgar Allan Poe. Starting as a trio of sisters playing the folk and bluegrass circles, Rebecca and Megan share the beginnings of their music, path, and even how they've become who they are today. Larkin Poe in recent years started their own Tricki-Woo Records and has received Grammy nods which would confirm that they are, "self-made wo-men."  Blues and rock have a history of irony and speaking for the disenfranchised, so why would their music be any different? We discuss the insidiousness of the issues that the band put under a microscope in their songs from their newest album Self Made Man, and how they're flipping the script of how the disenfranchised characters that have been a staple in media are now the empowered voices of a new generation.

You Don’t Know How It Feels”. Out of the Box Album of the Week with Paul Shugrue

A duo of sisters, Rebecca and Megan Lovell, have released their fifth album in six years, “Self Made Man.” Like most siblings they have extraordinary vocal harmonies but what sets them apart is the harmony their guitars create on these bluesy rock originals, or as they call it “guitarmony.”

Born and raised in Georgia, sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell are the charismatic soul-singing/songwriting duo. The sisters musical journey began at the ages of 5 and 6 playing classical violin and piano. In their early teens, they won a prestigious award on Garrison Keillors “A Prairie Home Companion on NPR. HUMMING HOUSE is a powerful quintet that embodies edgy Irish traditions, independent artistry with its legacies of folk, soul and bluegrass. Formed out of informal Irish music jams and the songwriting of Justin Wade Tam, the five musicians have played major festivals and have released two studio albums and one live recording since 2011, the latest being Revelries. WoodSongs Kid: The Hollow Bodies are a roots and folk trio from Lexington featuring Riley Logan on mandolin, Blakeley Burger on guitar and fiddle and Chris Cupp on cello.
