The world around you may seem to be going mad as everyone enters lockdown phase, however don’t worry, the At The Flicks team are there for you. We have more content stored than Neil’s toilet roll collection and it is of better quality. Yes, throughout this crisis we pledge to deliver to you shows on a regular basis. You may not agree with our views (no one ever agrees with Jeff), but we hope to keep you informed about all aspects of movies and also to try to keep you smiling. Take this show, our mid March spectacular. We have two top quality interviews and a batch of movie news more infectious than the coronavirus! First up in our interviews is Ashley, the top sound engineer on Cape Town’s morning show Expresso. Jeff recorded this interview with Ashley when he was in Cape Town recently and says he wishes he was back there now – so do we Jeff. Ashley talks us through a typical day and tells us about sound recording techniques that make Graham jealous. After that we have an interview with Swedish film director Jimmy Olsson. Jimmy has recently made a powerful short film called Alive, which is about to go on the festival circuit. We have seen it and our collective view is that it is a winner and well worth looking out for. Jimmy talks to us about the making of Alive and also about his previous film 2nd Class which is equally powerful. Remember the name – Jimmy Olsson, you are going to be hearing it a lot more in the future. Finally we have our popular movie news. Jeff runs through a fascinating slate of movies that actor Willem Dafoe has lined up and Neil gives us the lowdown on a new British war film called Operation Mincemeat. As for Graham, well he threw out the highbrow news written for him just so he could talk about one of his heroes, the great Gerard Butler. Graham believes Gerard should be in every movie where a hero is required to save the Earth, and sets out to prove why it should be so. Gerard, we could do with your world saving attributes at the moment. Finally, a shout out for Bianca Garner and a wonderful piece she has written on the “one shot” film. Not sure what that means? Check out the link below and Bee will explain all. As usual any feedback on the show please let us know. I know it may be difficult at the moment, but keep smiling, the At The Flicks team are there for you. Until next time – take care out there.

Welcome to our first end of month review show of the year.  It has been a few months since our last reviews show, so we start with a little catch up. Star Wars fan Phil Foster aka Phil the Bear joins us to discuss Star Wars : The Rise Of Skywalker (or as Jeff has cynically named it – Star Wars : The Death Of A Saga). It is a film which has divided audiences as much as it has done for our panel. Whatever your view on the film, I am sure you will agree that proved to be an odd end for a story which started a long, long time ago. More up to minute reviews include 1917, JoJo Rabbit and Bombshell. While discussing releases, we could not pass up the opportunity to talk about Cats. Generally reviled, however one member of the team speaks up in its defence. I wonder who would be that contrary to go against what most people are thinking? I will give you a clue, he is Welsh and annoys Neil a lot!  Joining us for the reviews is Darren from @dazzalovesmovies. Darren puts us to shame with regard to movie watching, and his much missed section Darren’s Dash returns where he tells us about such films as Little Women and Waves.  Away from reviews, the At The Flicks team are delighted to be talking to Bianca Garner about her website In Their Own League. This wonderful site celebrates women in all aspects of the film industry, something which is definitely required, as the lack of recent Award nominations have shown. Bianca, also known as Bee, tells us about how quickly the site has grown, her amazing team of writers and her future ambitions for the site. After that we chat to Steve Wright, our friendly Cineworld manager who has had a very busy Christmas, and who looks like having an incredibly busy 2020. With hits like 1917, Little Women and The Personal History of David Copperfield, I think it will be some time before Steve gets a break! That’s the show. I think you will agree that we have something for every movie palate in this episode. As always please let us know what you think. Enjoy.

Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

Can't get a res at Dorsia? Well, you can always settle in with our analysis of director Mary Harron's killer satire American Psycho. Based on the 1991 Bret Easton Ellis novel, the film stars Christian Bale in his breakthrough role as investment banker Patrick Bateman, whose career amidst the excess of the late 1980s may have pushed him to engage in a murderous rampage. Bianca Garner — aka The Film Bee — of Filmotomy joins the show to discuss how the 2000 release brings a distinctive perspective on toxic masculinity. Co-written by Harron and Guinevere Turner, American Psycho uses upbeat pop tunes, an ambiguous narrative and an incredibly complex performance by Bale to create a darkly hilarious and harrowing portrait of the pressures of modern capitalism. Check out our takes on what Bateman would be doing (and listening to) today as well as why Harron's film is more relevant than ever. We'll see you there. First, we have to go return some videotapes. SYNOPSIS Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a Wall Street yuppie, obsessed with success, status and style, with a stunning fiancee (Reese Witherspoon). He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose. Based on the controversial novel, the film offers a sharp satire to the dark side of yuppie culture in the 80s, while setting forth a vision that is both terrifying and chilling.
