Known to roll the Cajun off his tongue so fluently, you would think he was from Louisiana. Don 'Ziggy' Zeitler strolls around the country brandishing a multi-instrumentalist pedigree with a bluesman's heart. Zig has been a mainstay from the Saginaw area. Growing up in Hemlock, Zig caught the bug early on. Now doing just exactly what he wants to do musically, you can find him popping up on Facebook live as much as hitting the road, usually with his wife Siusan Bayne O'Rourke. Performing with the TOGO Touring Artists/Smokin' Sleddog Records label, Zig has found comfort in a roux made with his Cajun/zydeco/blues ingredients and of course some Irish music with Siusan. Here in Part 2, Zig dives into the music, styles, and future of the White Crow, as well as more live music--tune in afterwards for a bonus show wrap-up tune as well along with Sir Fred!
“The characteristics of jazz help. Its sense of improvisation, individualism, sound, and rhythm are all present and important in graphic design, too.” - Niklaus Troxler, who have been improvising with letterforms like Jazz Musicians since 1960s. In my opinion, a Poster is a mix of typeface and graphics communicating something. In here, typeface matters a lot. To discuss this and more, today we have Sarang Kulkarni with us. Sarang is a type designer and co-founder of Ektype. He also has his own agency called as The White Crow where he does branding and typography work. This Audiogyan will be in English and Marathi. Questions What according to you is Type / Akshar? Massimo Vignelli said that he is comfortable with half a dozen typefaces lasting a lifetime. Rest all is visual pollution. What's the need for more typefaces? What triggers a need for new typefaces? Medium, Language, Expression, Enhancement, Technology, Content? Are there ways to systematically study and distinguish between an improvisation of a typeface versus a different typeface? For eg, Mukta and Modak have different anatomy, so we can say that they are 2 different fonts. But can we say that Inter is an improvised version of Helvetica? You deal with a lot of abstract forms as well. At letterbox, for eg: “k” (Marathi) can be identified if one looks at the flow or series of iterations of representing ‘k'. Can a letter form be identified in isolation? What's the extent of improvisation? How abstract one can go and still make it palatable? When can one start improvising on a typeface? When the base font is registered in everyone's mind. For eg: Can we improvise on a newly launched font set? Does improvisation in a typeface done only as an experiment can transform into the usage of mass communication? What's going on with 365 days of type and more such practices and movements? Are those improvisations? How easy or hard is it today to experiment and improvise on open-source fonts? When does the author know that the improvisation is done? Uncomfortable Conversations Podcast The Untold Stories of the 3HO Kundalini Yoga Community
Siri Whitecrow, was born Elias Seneca Whitecrow in 1972 in Juneau, Alaska. His mom, Sat guru Kaur, joined 3HO with his older sister, Siri Kaur, in 1976 and his name was changed to Siri Singh Khalsa. His early life was spent between two different ashrams in Anchorage, Alaska, then in 1979 he was sent to Española New Mexico at 7 years old, living with two different families. In 1981 he was sent to the newly (not yet) established India program GNFC, initially being sent to the girls school because he was so young and only in 3rd grade. After four years in India, and tons of horrific abuse, and plenty of righteous resistance, he was kicked out of that school and sent back to the USA. He spent half a year at Amritsar Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was eventually asked to “not return”. He ended up in Los Angeles, near his mom and close to the ashram, but by 1988 he left 3HO/Sikh Dharma/Kundalini Yoga completely, never looking back. Graffiti became a huge part of his life and currently still is. His Graffiti name is ANGER and he runs one of the biggest graffiti crews in the world which began in 1993 when his life was forever altered when his mentor was hit by a train, and he was shot 4X by a Los Angeles police officer. He currently lives in Los Angeles, is married with two boys and continues to navigate his life through art, and creativity. Is the mark of a good negotiation really that both parties walk away from the table slightly dissatisfied? White Crow's and Creature London's CEO & founder, Dan Cullen doesn't think so. In this episode, Dan talks to host Mike Lander about the need to make negotiations a positive experience, the importance of setting ground-rules (and sticking to them), and why the marketing industry's attitude towards procurement is self-defeating. This episode features five artist-researchers from the Making With Place Research Project (MWP), a collaborative initiative in T'karonto between York University graduate students Charlotte Lombardo and Phyllis Novak and SKETCH, an award-winning community arts program. Pree Rehal, Bert Whitecrow, Ayrah Taerb, Ammarah Syed, and Jahmal Nugent are all established young artists who came together during the COVID-19 pandemic to explore and create placemaking art installations and activations. MWP recently launched an online journal-zine at makingwithplace.ca, and four exciting immersive and interactive public art projects taking place across T'karonto throughout fall 2021 and spring 2022. In this conversation, the artist-researchers discuss the epistemologies of identity and place that guide their creative practice, and their perspectives on whether art is or can be research. They also reflect on their initial skepticism of the MWP research and how they subvert colonial ways of knowing and knowledge production as artists, place-makers, and culture creators. Priya “Pree” Rehal Pree is an artist educator currently based in Tkaronto, originally from Tiohtià:ke. They're the children of immigrant settlers from Punjab. Pree's work centres their identity as a queer, non-binary, trans, disabled, fat, and racialized individual. They have an interdisciplinary arts practice under the name: Sticky Mangos and co-founded the Non-Binary Colour Collective. You can follow their arts practice on Instagram: @StickyMangos or on Twitter (@preezilla). Roberta “Bert" Whitecrow Bert is a 2 Spirited, Anishinaabe multidisciplinary artist from Seine River First Nation. Their work explores themes of healing, preserving, and practicing ancestral knowledge. As a conceptual artist, Bert works with a variety of media, often combining traditional and unconventional materials. They are a founding member of the Weave and Mend collective, which is a mixed Indigenous collective that focuses on building relationships with Indigenous communities through art making workshops, facilitated conversation and permaculture. Bert is currently attending OCAD University in the Indigenous Visual Cultures program. Ayrah Taerb Is The Founder Of Kundalini Kurrency Khansultancy; A Collective Of Creative Professionals & Administrators Who Seek To Spread The Values Of Self Determination & Co Operative Economics Among The Global Black Community. As An Executive Producer, Creative Consultant, and Embodiment Instructor; He Is Equipped With The Skills & Expertise Required To Develop Artists, Mentor Professionals, and Responsibly Condition Children & Youth To Exist Within The Context Of A Transcendental Society. Ammarah Syed is an interdisciplinary artist interested in documenting how modern day discourses such as capitalism, colonialism, and various power dynamics have developed to inform mental health, identity and sexuality. Ammarican explores how words among other factors, influence emotion, culture and politics. AmmariCan't Even, Ammarah's performance alter-ego, likes to deconstruct and explore the little boxes our society and our minds like to put us in. Both of their processes involve sitting on their ass for 8 weeks (contemplating of course) & then creating something all in one go. They aspire to use the arts as a means to transform oppression into change. www.ammarican.com (@ammarican) Jahmal Nugent (aka NINJAHMAL) Visual media artist Jahmal Nugent, born, raised and based in Toronto, primarily focuses on digital photography and videography to create, but sometimes experiments with physical mediums. Jahmal's work explores seeing the ordinary as extraordinary, and reminding us of how beautiful and amazing elements we take for granted can be. This episode was hosted and directed by Madeleine Ross, produced by Rubén Gaztambide-Fernández and Sarah Switzer, and supported by Naima Raza and Oliver Thompson.
Today Cody and Jeremy welcome the power couple of the hard cider industry to the pod; Denise and Ken from White Crow Cider in Wichita! Is it beer? Is it wine? Plus a cameo appearance from none other than Tone-Loc.

(TSAP S03E19) Sam speaks with composer, Ilan Eshkeri, about his journey into music composition, his recent work on Ghost of Tsushima, collaborating with Shigeru Umebayashi, Space Station Earth and more! "Ilan Eshkeri is an award winning composer, artist, songwriter, producer and creator. Eshkeri's work is performed in concert halls, theatres, galleries, on film & television and video games; his eclectic body of work is linked by his love of narrative. Ilan is currently creating music for A Perfect Planet, his fourth collaboration with the legendary naturalist David Attenborough. Recently, Ilan and Ralph Fiennes completed their third film together – a biopic about Rudolf Nureyev, ‘The White Crow'. This followed the creation of a ballet ‘Narcissus and Echo', choreographed by famed dancer Sergei Polunin with set designs by David LaChapelle and a ballet commission from Rambert Dance Company. Ilan has collaborated with Burberry on a landmark fashion show, where he composed and conducted a choral symphonic suite, ‘Reliquary', which then reached no.1 in the UK classical chart. Before this, he worked with astronaut Tim Peake and the European Space Agency on a film documenting his mission to the International Space Station. Ilan continues his collaboration with Tim Peake and ESA with his spell-binding show ‘Space Station Earth' last performed in Stockholm to an audience of 10,000. Other performance highlights include a unique concert for thousands in the gardens of the Louvre in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Rudolfinum in Prague." Episode Notes Episode 74: Ordnance Brewing’s White Crow White StoutIt’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum and it’s that time again where we take on that massive craft brew aisle to find the hidden treasures waiting for us there. This week we’re taking a look at White Crow White Stout by Ordnance Brewing in Boardman, OR. What exactly is a White Stout, anyway? Let’s find out!First thing’s first. Although Ordnance Brewing’s operation is based in Boardman, they also have a taproom in Wilsonville, Oregon. I got to visit this taproom over the holidays and spent some time enjoying several of their beers. It was my intent to do a quickfire review as I usually do on my brewery visits, hitting all the beers that I tasted that day—and don’t get me wrong, I still intend to devote an episode to that. But when I tried their White Crow I knew that I was going to have to do a whole show featuring this beer. Pouring this beer into the glass I had no idea what was going on. It was listed on the wall as a stout but the color is a pale straw yellow. If you poured this and set it in front of me I’d swear I was looking at a pilsner. But then I smelled it. Absolutely amazing. Out of this pale yellow brew I got a ton of coffee and a little chocolate as well as just a hint of vanilla. There’s also a little bit of a cereal scent in the very back that rounds it out and reminds you that this is a brewing operation owned and operated by an Oregon farming dynasty. But what about the taste? White Crow is sweet around the edges with a good strong coffee bitterness. It’s full of roasted, toasted flavors that again I did not expect based on what I was looking at in my glass. You get both that little bit of chocolate and that little bit of vanilla that shows up in the scent. It also has a little touch of that unique stout sourness in the very back of the swallow which rounds the whole thing out and bring it home stout style. The feel of the beer in the mouth is very clean and pillowy soft but not at all chunky like you might expect from some stouts. It’s almost refreshing because of how clean it drinks. I went into this tasting expecting a gimmick beer—a stout that was pale instead of dark. But that’s selling White Crow extremely short. This is a lovingly-crafted stout with all the flavors I love and expect out of the style, but with a unique spin that adds to the fun of drinking it. White Crow is 5.8% alcohol by volume. Based on their website it appears that Ordnance currently distributes to Oregon, Washington and Northern Idaho. I’ve reached out to them for more information and I’m waiting to hear back—I hope to have more details on how you can get your hands on this and the rest of their beers soon. But for those of you living within the distribution area—or who know people who can ship or smuggle you a bottle across state lines—this is an absolute must-try beer. We’re making it a Two Minute Beer Review Recommendation. That’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as we take a look at Hanamachi Rice Lager by Bottle Logic Brewing in Anaheim, CA. Is this one a hit or should we save the rice for sushi ? We’ll find out next week. Look for links to this week’s beer and brewery in the show notes, and don’t forget to let us know what you’re drinking and what you’re thinking about the show. Der Schauspieler und Regisseur Ralph Fiennes hat nun einen Film über Nurejew gedreht, der am Donnerstag in die Kinos kommt.

It's the biggest weekend ever in the history of big weekends with the opening of “Avengers: Endgame.” Alonso, Matt and Christy have a review of the Marvel movie behemoth as well as a separate, in-depth spoiler talk, which runs from about 17:00 to 42:30, if you'd like to skip ahead and come back to it after you've seen the film for yourselves. And you'd be amazed to learn that other movies exist in the world: “JT LeRoy,” about … well … JT LeRoy; “Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce,” which chronicles the superstar's game-changing Coachella performance last year; and “The White Crow,” about ballet great Rudolf Nureyev's 1961 defection from the Soviet Union. We also have discussions about the latest episodes of “Game of Thrones” and “Fosse/Verdon” over at our Patreon page if you'd like to join us there. So assemble. Or get in formation. And enjoy.

Ralph Fiennes' third film as director is The White Crow, the story of how Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev came from a peasant upbringing to be one of the greatest dancers, and how whilst on tour in Paris in 1961 he defected to the West from the Soviet Union. Critic Sarah Crompton reviews.Last week dozens of well-heeled American parents, including actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, were charged with involvement in a scheme to fabricate academic and athletic credentials to get their children into prestigious universities. And last week Joshua Harmon's play ‘Admissions' opened here. It's about a woman who, devoted to improving diversity at her elite school, finds herself somewhat challenged when her son doesn't get into Yale - but his mixed race best friend does. And this week another American play, ‘Downstate' by Bruce Norris, opens at the National Theatre. This is set in a group home where four men, convicted of sex crimes against children and tagged, live. A man comes to confront his abuser, but our sympathies are not only with him. With Samira Ahmed the two playwrights discuss how and why, far from being escapist, the theatre is where contentious issues are imaginatively examined today.
