David Putnam, a retired law enforcement officer who successfully transitioned to a career as a published author – the Bruno Johnson series. David's journey is a remarkable tale of resilience, adaptability, and the pursuit of passion, a must-listen for members of the first responder community, as well as anyone interested in career transition and personal growth. David's story begins with his childhood, where he shares insights into his early life and the experiences that shaped his character and career choices. His path led him to a distinguished career in law enforcement, where he dedicated years of service, gaining invaluable experiences and insights into the complexities and challenges of this demanding field. David spent over 40 years as a cop, retiring in 2011. In his career he worked for multiple agencies in Southern California as well as a short time with the AG Office in Hawaii, where he officially retired from. David worked violent felons, narcotics, SWAT, and IA. He also promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. David's transition journey involves becoming a published crime fiction author, a dream he nurtured alongside his law enforcement career. David wrote his first 4 books in 1989 while doing surveillance as part of a narcotics team. This part of his life is particularly inspiring for those considering life after an emergency services career. David discusses the challenges and triumphs of shifting from the structured world of law enforcement to the creative and often unpredictable realm of writing. He wrote 36 books before getting his first publishing deal. Today, David's writing career is flourishing, with his works reflecting the depth of his experiences in law enforcement. He created the Bruno Johnson series starting with the first book, The Disposables (2014) to the 10th in the series, The Scorned (2023). David has written 66 books in total and continues to develop and write more books. His books are not just stories; they are a testament to the skills, insights, and perspectives he gained during his time in law enforcement. David's success as an author serves as a beacon of inspiration for those contemplating a career transition, especially within the law enforcement and first responder communities. This week, we review the unfairly maligned, Ghostbusters 2. The film came out five years after the firtst, churned out by Columbia Pictures, who was in dire need of a hit after firing their CEO, David Putnam. The production was chaotic. While this film did not have the drastic re-writes of the first, it also had a shooting schedule of approximately one-third of the original's 13 month shoot. Ivan Reitman returned to direct. He and both of his children had cameos in the film. That's right, Jason Reitman, director of the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife, was in this film! He is at the birthday party Ray and Winston are at (in a scene that was later homaged in TMNT). We talk about the elder Reitman blaming this movie's "failure" (still made over $200,000,000) on the Tim Burton, Michael Keaton, and Jack Nicholson brooding powerhouse: Batman. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis returned to write the film. The original draft was very different, with the action taking place in Scotland, involving subterranean worlds and faerie rings. Special effects were completed by Industrial Light and Magic ("ILM"). Stephan Dane, designer of the Ecto-1, proton packs, and ghost trap, came back to this film and designed the giga-meter, slime scooper, and slime blower, but this time the poor boy was entirely uncredited. We talk about the new additions to the cast as well! Peter MacNicol played Janosz Poha, who has inarguably one of the most fun accents to impersonate ever (which he allegedly stole from Meryl Streep). We also go in depth into the history of the actor who played Vigo the Carpathian, “Wilhelm von Homburg,” born Norbert Grupe. He was the son of a WWII veteran, a boxer, a professional wrestler, and a total creep. How 'bout that soundtrack, eh? Bobby Brown, Elton John, and Danny Elfman, just to name a few! Speaking of music, this week's "Hidden Track" is Certain Doom, by Hrom: https://hromcan.bandcamp.com/ The song is off their album, Legends of the Powerheart: Part II. Debbi Mack interviews crime writer David Putnam on the Crime Cafe podcast. Check out the show notes below, or if you're in a rush, download a copy! 00:13 Debbi: Hi, everyone. This is the Crime Cafe, your podcasting source of great crime, suspense and thriller writing. I'm your host, Debbi Mack. Before I bring on my guest, I'll just remind you that the Crime Cafe has two e-books for sale; the nine-book box set and the short story anthology. You can find the buy links for both on my website, www[dot]debbimack[dot]com under the “Crime Cafe” link. You can also get a free copy of either book if you become a Patreon supporter. You'll get that and much more if you support the podcast on Patreon, along with our eternal gratitude for doing so. Debbi: [00:01:03] Today we have an author with an extensive and impressive background in law enforcement. He's worked in narcotics with the FBI on violent crimes. He's worked on a SWAT team. He was with the U.S. Marshalls. He was co-sworn in as a U.S. Marshall, among other things. And, according to his bio, was a member of the real life Hawaii Five-O, which I found very interesting. In any case, it's pretty clear where this author gets his material. Today's guest is bestselling author David Putnam. Hi, David. It's great to have my show today. David: [00:01:48] Thank you for having me. Debbi: [00:01:49] Oh, it's my pleasure. Thank you. Tell us about your protagonist, Bruno Johnson, and what prompted you to write about that character? What prompted you to create that particular kind of character? David: [00:02:03] Well, that's kind of a long explanation. I've been writing since like 1989. And I was constantly writing. I'd written 38 manuscripts when I finally sold my 34th manuscript, and I was trying everything. I tried police procedural, mystery, young adult, sci-fi. And I had four agents. I had a 156 rejections when I quit counting. And Bruno Johnson was just another one of those attempts to try to find a market for my writing. And Bruno Johnson, he is an ex-cop, ex-con who rescues children from toxic homes in South Central Los Angeles. He couldn't do it when he was a cop because there's too many rules and regulations. So now he goes outside the law to rescue the children. I chose Bruno and made him an African-American, because it adds an extra layer of conflict. When I was working for the sheriff's department, I left the jail after six months and went to work patrol in South Central Los Angeles. I went out with two African-American deputies and one was a good friend of mine. I got to see firsthand the added layer of conflict that he had to deal with. I thought that would work well in my books. So that's why I chose to do it that way. "When I was working for the sheriff's department, I left the jail after six months and went to work patrol in South Central Los Angeles. I went out with two African-American deputies and one was a good friend of mine. I got to see firsthand the added layer of conflict that he had to deal with. I thought that would work well in my books." Debbi: [00:03:25] That's very interesting, yeah. I'm reading your first in the series, The Disposables, and Michael Connelly called it "raw, powerful and eloquent", which I have to agree with. David: [00:03:39] Thank you. Debbi: [00:03:41] Did you have direct experience with seeing children in abuse situations? David: [00:03:47] Oh, yes. You know. Readers read for the emotion. That's what they're in the game for, they read for the emotion. And conflict is emotion. So I thought that I would also write about something that was most emotional to me, and the most difficult part of law enforcement was dealing with children who were abused, because they had no advocate except for law enforcement or social services. Debbi: [00:04:15] Yes. And social services can often be . . . David: [00:04:21] Overwhelmed. Debbi: [00:04:21] Overwhelmed, yes.

Retired Sergeant David Putnam stepped into the Interrogation Room, just to clear a few things up about his recent release, THE RECKLESS. David began writing as a child, and turned to novels during the later years of his police career. His latest release, THE RECKLESS, is the sixth installment of his Bruno Johnson series, and David based the story on his real-life experiences when he worked an armed robbery task force with the FBI. In this episode, David and Writers On the Beat host Gavin Reese discussed how using alcoholic blackouts to hide the plot is tantamount to cheating, how he balances authenticity and "accepted," and how his particular skillset made his years on the sheriff's "dog teams" the best part of his job. In this work, which blends sports and history together, Desjardin looks at the historic and turbulent events of September 1918 that affected Boston. The Red Sox won their fourth World Series in seven years, but the specter of World War I had shortened the baseball season. Players, disgruntled by the idea that they would be shortchanged in the regular season and the World Series, went on a brief strike before Game 4. A young Babe Ruth was a masterful pitcher but coming into his own as a hitter, but during the World Series, manager Ed Barrow was reluctant to use his left-handed star in the lineup when he was not pitching. Overseas, a Massachusetts volunteer unit led the first unified U.S. fighting unit into battle in France, while teenager David Putnam established himself as America’s flying ace during his short life. At home, an outbreak of Spanish influenza erupted in Boston and its suburbs, causing death at an alarming rate. Desjardin also touches on the women’s suffrage movement, spearheaded by Maud Park, who gained an audience with President Woodrow Wilson; the actions of Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Calvin Coolidge; and baseball players’ exemption from the “work or fight” order until after the World Series. Bob D’Angelo earned his master’s degree in history from Southern New Hampshire University in May 2018. Jenn is joined by Kim Ukura and Alice Burton, hosts of the For Real podcast, for a special nonfiction-themed episode! This episode is sponsored by Rebound by Kwame Johnson and the Bruno Johnson Series by David Putnam. Enter our mystery giveaway!   Questions 1. Hi there, This never-ending winter has me looking forward to the vacation I've planned for this June and I have visions of laying on the beach for days at a time with a good book. I'm not worried about being able to find good vacation reading material for myself, but my wife is a much pickier reader. Can you help me find a book that will keep her entertained so I can relax with my own book? She loves nonfiction and particularly enjoys heavy topics like the holocaust, dictatorships, and cults. Recent reads she has enjoyed include Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich by Norman Ohler and Without You, There is No Us: Undercover Amongst the Sons of North Korea's Elite by Suki Kim. I recently put The Road to Jonestown and Lilac Girls in her hands, but neither of those worked for her. Thanks in advance for your help! Best, --Brianna   2. I'm a single woman in my mid-30s and, while I am fine with my single status and enjoying my life as it is, almost all of my friends are partnering off and having children. I was feeling blue about it until I read Rebecca Traister's All the Single Ladies and Kate Bolick's Spinster, and am now looking for more reads that celebrate single women, especially single women without children. I'm looking specifically for books with female protagonists who get to enjoy a happy ending without being coupled off or having kids, or where the happy ending is not focused on coupledom (though it's fine if there's a relationship in the story). I read all fiction genres except horror and I also enjoy nonfiction, especially memoirs and biographies. Thanks in advance. I love the podcast! --Rebecca   3. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I just have to say y'all are the best, and I love this podcast so much. My to be read list grows every day (mostly because I just discovered this podcast so I am just binging my way through it :)) I have a request for a book for my boyfriend. He likes to read, but he's a really slow reader (this was my way of saying, he likes to read but doesn't read a lot, you know?), and we just moved in together and I noticed that almost all of his books are by straight white males. My new years resolution is to get him only books by...not straight white males. So. He likes fantasy and science fiction. (He loved the Name of the Wind, I think he liked Game of Thrones.) But I've already recommended him Octavia Butler, and N.K. Jemisin is on my to-read list. He also LOVES true crime and nonfiction/historical-ish books, like Devil in the White City. (I also already got him Killers of the Flower Moon before I made my resolution. Whoops.) Any recommendations are so welcome, in these genres or feel free to go crazy. Best, --Rachael   4. I've been feeling the inadequacy of my high school level American History education lately, as I've been listening to a lot of podcasts that have happened to bring up Asian American historical events that I realize I know very little about. I would like to brush up on my Asian American history in general but I don't know where to start. Do you have any nonfiction recs in this area, both in the overview theme and more specific and particular events and ethnic groups? Thank you much! --Rayne   5. I am getting very interested in language itself. This began with just loving novels with beautiful and pithy prose (so rec's in that vein are certainly welcome). Now I'm increasingly interested in linguistics and philology. While I'm so far fascinated by Steven Pinker's "The Language Instinct", I am hoping for books (nonfiction, memoirs, essay collections, or even novels) more welcoming to the lay linguist. For instance, Bill Bryson's "The Mother Tongue" is very much the sort of thing I'm hoping for more of, and I am currently working through and enamored by Jhumpa Lahiri's beautiful "In Other Words". So, where do I go when I finish that one? Thanks y'all! --Noah   6. Hi-ya! I am trying to be a less stupid white person. Recently I have read Between the World and Me by Ta-Nahisi Coates, the March series by Congressman John Lewis, and the quite excellent satire, I Am Not Sidney Poitier by Percival Everett. I loved them all, and would like to read more like them. I am planning to read more satires like Welcome to Braggsville, The Sellout, and Blackass, but are there other books on race that you can recommend, fiction or nonfiction? I would especially love some gems from the past that I may have missed, or something written by a woman! Many thanks!! --K   Books Discussed Not So Stories edited by David Thomas Moore Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison Bachelor Nation by Amy Kaufman My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me by Jennifer Teege Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink Death in the Air: The True Story of a Serial Killer, the Great London Smog, and the Strangling of a City by Kate Winkler Dawson Bachelor Girl by Betsy Israel (trigger warning: discussion of rape) The Extra Woman by Joanna Scutts I Can Barely Take Care of Myself by Jen Kirkman The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu The Poisoner’s Handbook by Deborah Blum Black Dahlia, Red Rose: The Crime, Corruption, and Cover-Up of America’s Greatest Unsolved Murder by Piu Eatwell The Making of Asian America by Erika Lee The Song Poet by Kao Kalia Yang Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People by Helen Zia “Stories of Your Life” from Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang Proust and the Squid by Maryanne Wolf The Adventure of English: The Biography of a Language by Melvyn Bragg Eloquent Rage by Brittney Cooper The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson From #blacklivesmatter To Black Liberation by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor
