The Local Media Association (LMA) and the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) have united to establish the Pennsylvania Fundraising Lab. This groundbreaking venture is designed to empower Pennsylvania news organizations with the expertise and understanding needed to secure philanthropic funding for their reporting projects , thereby enhancing their financial sustainability and enabling them to continue delivering high-quality journalism. In a recent episode of 'E&P Reports,' Frank Mungeam, LMA chief innovation officer, and Bill Cotter, PNA president, shared the success story of the LMA's Lab for Journalism Funding. With over $23 million raised for journalism funding through the national lab, the decision to expand to a state-level initiative in Pennsylvania was a logical progression. The Pennsylvania Fundraising Lab will operate within a six-month ‘cohort learning format,' offering participating newsrooms the opportunity to learn from philanthropic fundraising experts, share best practices, and receive guidance from experienced mentors. Bill Cotter emphasized the importance of strong leadership and community-focused projects in driving the success of the Fundraising Lab. "Newsroom leaders play a critical role in championing fundraising efforts and ensuring that selected projects address local community needs," stated Cotter. “This lab encourages proactive, solutions-oriented journalism that makes a tangible impact on communities, fostering support and engagement from local audiences.'" The Pennsylvania cohort will be led by Liz White, a former newspaper owner/publisher and an LMA Advanced Fundraising Lab graduate. LMA staff and a team of coaches will also provide one-on-one support to the participating newsrooms. In a recent statement, the PNA explained that preference for participation will be given to media organizations that: Have solid local leadership and deep ties to the community. Are focused on high-quality local journalism. Have leadership-level buy-in to participate in this lab and make the time/resource commitment. Value staff and leadership diversity. The statement went on to say that each publisher in the cohort will set a fundraising goal, in consultation with the coaches, that aligns with that publisher's market size. Participating publishers will also attend the LMA Fest in September and meet with funders and other fundraising lab participants. Case studies and an industry playbook will be published, sharing best practices and lessons learned. During the E&P interview, Cotter shared the Lenfest Institute's involvement in the project, stating: “They will play a crucial role by providing programmatic support, guest speakers and case studies to enrich the learning experience for participants,” Cotter went on to highlight the Institute's expertise in assisting news enterprises with fundraising through the Lenfest News Philanthropy Network and its focus on digital transformation for historically print news organizations through the Lenfest Beyond Print program. Cotter said, “This collaboration underscores the commitment of all stakeholders involved to equip Pennsylvania news organizations with the resources and knowledge necessary to navigate the evolving media landscape effectively.” To offer additional support, the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association will also award participating Lab newsrooms three $20,000 grants at their 100th Anniversary Gala.

One might assume abortion has always been a hot-button topic in American politics since the Supreme Court ruling legalizing it in 1973. But that is not the case. The US pro-life movement was so non-robust for many years that by 1987, abortion was not even one of the top 10 issues for American voters. Then suddenly, in ABC's 1988 election exit poll, abortion had shot to the number one issue for voters. What made abortion into a political litmus test so suddenly? Operation Rescue was what happened. Little remembered now, OR was, believe it or not, the largest civil disobedience in American history. Between 1987 and 1994, about 75,000 pro-life activists were arrested for peacefully interfering with abortion clinic operations - that's ten times more people arrested than in the entire civil rights movement. And though Operation Rescue quickly fizzled out in 1994 because of the Clinton administration's FACE Act (recently used to prosecute Mark Houck), it gave the pro-life movement the jump-start it needed to get us to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Arguably, were it not for Operation Rescue, the U.S. would be much like Europe, with even anti-abortion conservatives more or less accepting it as the "law of the land", and little political will to fight it. It is a great honor, then, to have the founder of Operation Rescue on the Catholic Culture Podcast. Randall Terry, who ran OR for its first few years and was arrested 50 times for his pro-life activism, is producing a documentary series, Dragonslayers, which will tell the history of OR using many hours of amazing footage that exists from the time. He is currently raising funds so that the series can be made. Randall joins the show to talk about OR and its decisive role in the history of the pro-life movement, the need for direct action in the pro-life cause today, and the political tools that will be indispensable for ending abortion in all 50 states - which he calls Randall's Rules for Righteous Revolution. A fun discussion about puppets, children's literature, libraries, and the age-old cat vs. dog debate? Toucan play at that game—namely, our two special guests Sammy and Annisha! First, we partnered with the Indiana Center for the Book to chat with our friend Sammy, a corduroy puppet in the shape of a toucan who has interviewed Indiana authors for more than a decade. Sammy lives in a drawer but does not want to talk about it! Sammy is a very good reader! Sammy thinks Garfield is a killjoy! Sammy does not know who Jonathan Franzen is! Sammy's sassiness increases with age! Sammy sees puppets as friends! Although really, what even IS a puppet, anyway? We're also joined by Annisha Jeffries, the Manager of the Youth Services Department at Cleveland Public Library. Annisha discusses her love of cats, why puppets are helpful for young readers, why libraries matter, and more. She also shares her enthusiasm for Bill Cotter's books, including DON'T PUSH THE BUTTON and DON'T TOUCH THIS BOOK. Sammy, meanwhile, offers enthusiastic bird praise for author April Pulley Sayre and shares Sayre's delightful book, BIRD, BIRD, BIRD! Robert Nordlander, a former Senior Special Agent in the Criminal Investigations area of the Internal Revenue Service, joined us for this episode of Where Accountants Go, the Accounting Careers Podcast. In this episode, we discuss what originally drew Robert into law enforcement, how he ended up landing the position with the IRS, and some key cases he worked on during his tenure with the Service. If you are interested in forensic accounting, law enforcement, or even starting your own specialty consulting company of any kind, you will find value in this episode. Robert was very generous and open in discussing his career. You definitely will have many take-aways from this interview. During his seven years abroad Bill taught in China, Mexico and Peru. In Peru, Bill helped build the Roosevelt Innovation Academy, a project-based program for high school students focused on real world learning. Felicia Farrar, a CPA, CFE, and now a PhD candidate as well, joined us for this episode of Where Accountants Go, the Accounting Careers Podcast. We haven't touched on careers within governmental accounting in a while, so this episode will be a refreshing change. Felicia joined us for this program to discuss her career path that started with several years early on working with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In an interesting turn of events though, as she progressed in her education, she decided to leave the Service in order to expand her experience base. After some time in the Big 4, and then some time in accounting for a major municipality, she decided to return to the IRS and continue her career there. In addition to the discussion of Felicia's career, we also delve into the importance of attaining appropriate credentials along the way. As you will hear during this interview, Felicia made most (if not all) of her career decisions based on the experience she would gain or the importance of the work. Also, she always made sure that she worked towards getting the appropriate credentials for the job, such as the CFE certification, CPA certification, and even advanced degrees. She definitely has worked hard to get to where she is today. Governmental accounting positions can be very rewarding for many individuals, and Felicia's career path is an excellent example of that. I think you will thoroughly enjoy this episode. For similar episodes, check out: Bill Cotter and Amy Pitter To listen in on this interview with Felicia Farrar, please click on the player below:
So hold on just a minute. Let's get this straight: Guy was murdered in his home. All the doors were locked. No broken or open windows. All the locks had been recently changed except the French doors in the bedroom. The only person known to have a second key for those French doors is guy's soon-to-be ex-wife, whose new live-in boyfriend hates guy's guts and - in more than one written email and more than one recorded voice mail message - has threatened to kill him. And 15 years later, there have been no arrests. Waitwut? So goes the story of Edward Berber, a solid working dude living in Hacienda Heights, an L.A. bedroom community, just trying to better his life, take care of his kids and maybe even get back together with his wife. - and whose 27 year-old life was cut short in a way that SEEMS pretty cut and dried. But as we've learned, Tip-Sters, the fact is that sometimes "cut and dried" is more like "gnawed and moldy" when it comes to solving a murder. And when the initial investigators drop the ball on a case like this, it can take years to correct the screw-up. The good news is that the homicide detectives with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department now working Edward Berber's cold and disturbing assassination from 2005 are hot on the tail of closing this case - but they need your help. Listen in as Melissa is joined on the phone by Detectives Rob Martindale, Bill Cotter and Gina Eguia, who go over the details, explain the problems with, and propose solutions to bringing the perpetrator of this awful crime to justice, whomever that may be.

Operation Rescue is the largest civil disobedience movement in American history. It even dwarfs the civil rights movement, with over fifty thousand people having been arrested between 1988 and 1992 for nonviolently blockading abortion clinics. Yet most people, even most Catholics, don't know the story. On the rare occasions when it has been covered by the media, it has been falsely and laughably portrayed as violent and extremist. Today's episode is something of an oral history of Operation Rescue, told by Bill Cotter, head of OR Boston, who spent 19 months in prison for his involvement with the protests. You'll also hear from CatholicCulture.org's own Phil Lawler, who provided the public face of OR Boston while Bill was in jail, and also wrote a book about the movement in 1992. Links Phil Lawler's book, Operation Rescue: A Challenge to the Nation's Conscience https://www.amazon.com/Operation-Rescue-Challenge-Nations-Conscience/dp/0879735066 Operation Rescue Boston http://orboston.org/ Operation Rescue national website http://www.operationrescue.org/ Footage of police brutality against Rescuers during the “Summer of Mercy”, in which tens of thousands of pro-lifers flocked to Wichita and thousands were arrested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSPto_gQ5CU Footage of L.A. police breaking a Rescuer's arm with nunchucks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6H-8_VE6Oc Timestamps: Bill Cotter interview 3:00 Description of a rescue 6:49 Tactics to delay police from dragging people away 10:13 Factors that kept Operation Rescue from continuing to operate as a mass movement blockading abortion clinics after its heyday in the late 80s and early 90s: court injunctions, most people unwilling to go to jail for longer than a weekend 12:07 Most of the people involved were not activist types and the rescues were not demonstrations. They had a specific concrete goal: on that day, at that time, in that place, to prevent babies from being killed 14:31 According to Phil Lawler's book Operation Rescue, in between 1988 and 1992 over 50,000 Rescuers had been arrested—about six times as many arrests as during the entire civil rights movement! Bill Cotter, Special Agent In Charge with the Criminal Investigations division of the Internal Revenue Service, joined us for this week's exciting episode of Life In Accounting: The Where Accountants Go podcast. Opportunity Bill recounts the story of how he decided to apply with the IRS at the beginning of this episode. In a nutshell, the economy was somewhat tight at the time and a friend suggested that he try the IRS as a possibility. He was accepted into the ‘Exam' division, but then quickly had the opportunity to move into criminal investigations. It's been a whirlwind of variety since then. You'll have to listen to the details, but it includes tours in Washington DC, New York, and Germany. Master Your Craft I asked Bill about his thoughts on what led to some of his success in moving up within the Service, and just like in most organizations, he credits it to putting in the effort to learn his job to the best of his ability and then coupling that with the effort needed to get the job done well. He also noted that a high level of attention to detail is important in the criminal investigations division, which makes total sense given the nature of the work. More opportunities We also get into a discussion of the other career options for those of us with accounting background within the IRS. Among them are positions as Special Agents, Revenue Agents, and of course many involving technology. A minimum of 15 hours of accounting is required for the majority of these roles, which is typical for an accounting major. If you have an interest in a position with the IRS, Bill also notes that it pays off to try to get onboard before age 37 because the Service has a generous retirement benefit that requires 20 years of overall service before their mandatory retirement age of 57 years old. This episode really was intriguing to record. I had no idea of the variety that someone could experience while working with the Internal Revenue Service. Happy listening! Mousetalgia reports on "Disney's Mid-Century Modern - to the World's Fair and Beyond," a panel discussion held at the Walt Disney Family Museum with Garner Holt's Bill Butler, historian Alan Hess, and historian Bill Cotter, the preeminent expert on the World's Fairs. The panelists discussed the influence of modern design on Disney's mid-century productions, including Disneyland and the 1964-65 World's Fair. Clean lines, contemporary material and modern sensibilities influenced both Disney's artists and the creative works they developed, and we discuss many of Walt Disney's modern projects, including his first Burbank campus, his television productions, Disneyland's Space Bar automat, the Disneyland Hotel, and the House of the Future. Bill Cotter also discussed the '64-'65 World's Fair, and Walt's cutting-edge design for the New York attractions. Then, Mousetalgia debuts a new feature: "Giving You a Hand with the Land," our touring advice segment in which we have callers present their unique trip-planning situations, and then we answer their questions and help plan the trip for those circumstances. Today, Michele joins the show to make plans for a reunion with a best friend sans their families to celebrate a 40th birthday. Plus - if you had to experience a single attraction 365 days in a row... which would you choose? Bonus: you could win a $50 Disney Gift Card - listen for details!

This week the podcast was intended to illustrate a routine bedtime but after reading Don't Push the Button by Bill Cotter and Octonauts and the Sea of Shade by Meomi we had a brief Lion King Musical Interlude with Owen's mom Sarah when he demanded some lotion for his face. We then finished off with a reading of My Little Geek by Andrew and Sarah Spear and Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Jen Corace. Bill Cotter is the guest. His new novel, The Parallel Apartments, is now available from McSweeney's. Heidi Julavits says "Reading Bill Cotter's The Parallel Apartments is like taking some kind of word drug, but a new one, synthesized in a desert lab from molecules of Lipsyte, Dickens, Pynchon, Williams, Chabon, DeWitt, and Joyce, and then spun together with Cotter's own unique particles to yield a book that produces an actual high when read. There's micro-attention paid to sweatpants material and the feel of artificial cheese powder on fingertips and the bouillon smell of nether regions. There is sadness. There is loneliness. There are riffs that make me wish an actor were there to read to me aloud, so I could cry from laughter without needing to clearly see the page. This book is an experience—it is a never-read-anything-like-it-before work of brainy, heartfelt joy." And Texas Monthly calls it "Funny and profane and more than slightly unhinged." Monologue topics: Super Bowl, barbarism, 1970s sitcoms, audio gags, the app. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Mom, Dad are we there yet? I wanna ride the doll ride mommy, you know the one at the Pepsi Building. NO DAD we rode that last time cause sis wanted to. I wanna see the Dinosaurs and ride in the Mustang. All right children, quiet down now We’ll be there anytime now and your father will decide what we do first… How many times was this scenario played out in 1964 through 1965 if you happened to be in New York? On this episode of Echoes of Laughter both T. Mic and Bill Cotter will revisit the 1964 New York World’s Fair which was held in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, in the borough of Queens. They will discuss Bill’s personal experience of attending the fair as well as what was good and bad about how the fair came about, how it was operated, what made it a unique World’s Fair, it’s financial problems and what remains of the site today. The site had also hosted the1939/1940 New York World’s Fair. It ran during April 22 through October 18, 1964 and April 21 through October 17, 1965. The admission price for adults (13 and older) was $2.00 in 1964 but $2.50 in 1965, and $1.00 for children (2–12) both years. The theme of the fair was "Peace Through Understanding," and was dedicated to "Man's Achievement on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe". The fair exhibits were unquestionably dominated by American Industry and third world countries that normally would not have a chance to participate in a World’s Fair. The reason for this was that the fair was unsanctioned by the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions) due to a variety of reasons including the fact that it was to be run for two 6 month seasons (The BIE only authorizes 1 – six month run). The fair site encompassed 1 square mile and was one of the largest fair sites ever hosted in the United States. Most of the corporate exhibits were geared towards space age technology. The theme was present in the architecture of many of the pavilions, such as the leaning wall of the GM pavilion, the IBM “Egg”, The Westinghouse and Ford Buildings were also futuristic in design. Though the fair was plagued with financial woe’s it still is remembered fondly by most of the public that attended it. In the variety of foods (such as the famous Bel-Gem Waffles), the wonder of people first seeing tomorrows technology in action and the hope of a utopian future as it was presented in abundance. Ah, the dreams of the past. And then there was the Disney influence… Walt Disney saw the fair as a great opportunity for his own company’s growth. Some of America’s top corporations benefited from Disney’s imagination and ingenuity in presenting their products to the public and Disney benefited in return by being able to use the financial backing from those very corporations to fund research and design for technologically advanced ride systems, shows, and (of course) Audio Animatronics… The rest shall we say is history. The 1964 New York World’s Fair significance is still very present some 48 years later and though there are very few physical landmarks that still survive on the site in Flushing Meadows Corona Park the gleaming stainless steel Unisphere still shines as brightly today for those who see it today as it does in the memories of those who still hold the experience of attending the fair in their mind and in their hearts from so many years ago…
This episode features an interview with Bill Cotter, published author of several books on World Fairs, Disney Television, and co-author on several other books. T. Mic (show host) & Bill discuss the 1984 Louisiana World’s Exposition at length. They will take you on an audio journey through the fair, area by area, they will discuss some of the individual attractions as well a the pavilions that were located in the 84 acre site on the Mississippi Riverfront in New Orleans Louisiana. They also discuss the origins of the fair, its challenges, highlights, and where you can still experience a few of the original attractions from the fair that are still in operation today. The will also discuss a little on some attractions that were planned for the fair but never came to be. The 1984 Louisiana World is probably one of the least documented World’s Fairs online yet most people that experienced the fair still retain fond memories of it some 26+ years later.
