October 11, 1999 -- With the American League divisional Series between Boston and Cleveland tied at two games apiece, the Red Sox send Bret Saberhagen out to face Charles Nagy. In an eruption of runs, both starters find themselves out of the game by the third inning and the game tied at 8. With the season on the line, Sox manager Jimy Williams summons his ace, Pedro Martinez from the bullpen. The electrifying move sent shockwaves through Jacob's field since Martinez was removed from Game 1 after 4 innings due to a strained back, and all expected they had seen the last of Pedro's incredible 1999 season. Martinez was masterful, striking out eight and walking three despite having neither his fastball nor changeup at his disposal. Throwing hiscurveball almost exclusively, Martinez and the Red Sox won the rubber match of the ALDS 12-8 in what is cited as one of Martinez's greatest appearances. Also memorable in this game was the Indians strategy to intentionally walk shortstop Nomar Garciapara to face outfielder Troy O'Leary. Twice they walked Nomar and twice O'Leary returned the favor with a homerun driving in 7 runs for the day.October 11, 1985, George Brett steals the show in Game 3 of the 1985 American League Championship Series. Down 2-0 to Toronto in the series, Brett drove in or scored every Kansas City run, going 4 for 4 with a single, a double, and two home runs. When Brett wasn't busy torturing Toronto pitcher Doyle Alexander at the plate, he was mystifying in the field making a back-handed stop at third base to throw out a runner at home, and recording the final out to give the Royals a much-needed 6–5 win; their first in a series that they would win in seven games

There have been a lot of notable players to suit up for the Colorado Rockies. In the past we've talked about players like Michael Cuddyer, Justin Morneau, and Jason Giambi but there are have a been several others that were some definite legends that made a brief stop in Colorado. Skyler and Dustin look back on the Mr. 3000-esque appearance of Dale Murphy, the acquisition of Bret Saberhagen, the unfortunate stint of Roy Oswalt, the sneaky good performance of Kevin Millwood, and round things off with perhaps the most disliked player in Rockies history, Jose Reyes. When Francisco Álvarez was hit by a pitch yesterday to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, Buck Showalter made the move that any manager would, sending in Tim Locastro to run for his catcher, needing him to go 270 feet to win the game.It turned out that Álvarez just could have scored as easily as Locastro did, as DJ Stewart singled, Mark Vientos walked, and Rafael Ortega laced the walkoff single to right field. The last time the Mets had a pinch-runner come in and score as part of a walkoff rally was three years ago today, Billy Hamilton in the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium, in a doubleheader nightcap where the Mets were the home team. In that one, Jeff McNeil walked against Aroldis Chapman, and Hamilton came in and stole second base before trotting home on Amed Rosario's two-run shot.In that instance, Hamilton represented the tying run. So did Juan Lagares when he scored on Dominic Smith's home run to end the 2019 season. But it is Lagares who was the previous Mets pinch-runner to bring home a walkoff run. On September 26, 2017, Kevin Plawecki greeted A.J. Minter with a single as the Mets were tied 3-3 with Atlanta. Smith walked and Rosario struck out before Travis Taijeron delivered the winning hit. There's been only one time in Mets history that a runner entered the game, stole a base, and scored the winning run, and it was in the 13th inning on April 23, 1992, after a duel between Bret Saberhagen and Donovan Osborne went scoreless into extras. The Mets had already caught Rex Hudler stealing in the 12th when Dave Magadan singled with one out in the 13th — he was replaced at first by Rodney McCray, who became famous the year before. You've seen that video a million times. You probably haven't seen McCray go to second on a Junior Noboa single, steal third, and after an intentional walk to Charlie O'Brien, score the winning run when Juan Agosto hit Daryl Boston with a pitch. Well, now you can, because that game is on YouTube, with Tim McCarver and Ralph Kiner on the call.Shoutout to Keith Miller, who pinch-ran for Garry Templeton after a leadoff single in the ninth inning of a 5-4 game, got picked off but advanced to second because Expos pitcher Barry Jones threw the ball away, then stole third and eventually scored on Kevin McReynolds' walkoff grand slam off Scott Ruskin. That was the last walkoff grand slam the Mets hit at Shea, following Mike Jorgensen in 1980 and Tim Teufel in 1986. Tim Harkness and Jim Hickman each did it in 1963 at the Polo Grounds, while Citi Field has had walkoff slams by Jordany Valdespin in 2013, Ike Davis in 2014, and José Bautista in 2018. On the heels of learning that no one on the 2023 SSS Veterans ballot made the cut, Brett Ballantini quickly assembled our own Veterans Committee proper to try to shove at least one or two players into the Hall. Taking on this prestigious assignment were Malachi Hayes, Dante Jones, Joe Resis and Melissa Sage-Bollenbach. Guaranteed, you won't see one of our picks coming. Go figure; Brett is the softest voter, having supported all 10 on the ballot for the Hall Melissa states unequivocally that PED or other cheating associations eliminate players from her consideration; after all, Hall election is a privilege and a responsibility Scattered support of David Cone, Bret Saberhagen and Kevin Brown intrigues in the the first half of the podcast, but bites us in the ass in the second half Universally supported, without reservation: Kenny Lofton. He's in Our other elected candidate? Reminiscent of the Harold Baines Vet election (although Harold is not nearly as worthy a player), he finished NINTH in SSS reader voting. Not gonna tell you who it was, it's such a shocker. But like Dick Allen, he wore a helmet in the field Going forward, it's uncertain whether we will continue with the Veterans ballot in the future, as only one candidate of 10 getting more than 40% — and this on a LOADED and worthy ballot, with no limits on how many players you can vote yes on — does not make for a promising future But hey, this was fun, and here's hoping you enjoyed the back-room process of our votes Learn more about your ad choices. Frank Robinson was the first black manager when the Cleveland Indians hired him, but there was another black player who managed before Robbie . . . . On November 4, 1948 Jake Powell, 39, former big league baseball star, shot himself to death in Washington police headquarters late today while being questioned on bad check charges. Powell had been picked up at the Union Station the complaint of a local hotel where he had been staying the past three days. After Powell was taken to the check and fraud division of local police headquarters and during the questioning police said he asked permission to leave the room for several minutes. Police said he stepped outside the door pulled out a 25-caliber revolver and shot himself once in the chest and once in the right temple. With him when he was taken into custody was a woman who identified herself as Josephine Amder, of Deland, Fla. she told police she and Powell had planned to be married during the day, but later changed their plans. But Mrs. Elizabeth Powell, to whom the ballplayer had been married several years, said she was still his wife and as far as she was concerned there had been no separation. On November 4, 1889 — After a formal meeting of representatives from all National League chapters, the Brotherhood issues a “Manifesto” in which it claims that “players have been bought, sold and exchanged as though they were sheep instead of American citizens.” This bold statement constitutes a declaration of war between the Brotherhood and major league officials which will soon explode into the formation of the Players League. 86 years later . . . . On November 4, 1976 — The first mass-market free agent re-entry draft is held at the New York Plaza Hotel. Among those available are Reggie Jackson, Willie McCovey, Joe Rudi, Don Gullett, Gene Tenace, Nate Colbert, Rollie Fingers, Don Baylor, and Bobby Grich. McCovey and Colbert are the only two players not selected, but McCovey will catch on with the Giants in spring training and have a banner year at his old first base position. Jackson will go onto star for the New York Yankees and win two World Championships. Fingers will have several excellent seasons for the Padres and Brewers including winning an MVP and Cy Young award. Baylor will go to win an MVP award. On November 4, 1959 — – Ernie Banks wins his second National League MVP Award in a row on the strength of his 45 home runs and 143 RBI for the Chicago Cubs. Eddie Mathews finishes second. What really made 1959 special for Ernie was his defense, his 3.5 Dwar is the highest of his career, he will be rewarded with a gold glove in 1960, but he was much better in 1959. Fun fact from 1955 to 1960 his 248 home runs were more than anyone else in the majors, including Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron. His 5 Grand slams in a single season is still tied for the single season record in the NL. And was the MLB record until 1987. On November 4, 2001, the Arizona Diamondbacks win their first World Series championship. Down a run to the Yankees in the ninth, the D-Backs rally against New York closer Mariano Rivera, winning on a single by Luis Gonzalez, 3-2. Tony Wolmack had tied the game 2 batters earlier, doubling down the right-field line. It was the first time since 1985, two twenty-game winners start Game 7 of the World Series when Yankee right-hander Roger Clemens (20-3) faces Curt Schilling (22-6) of the Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark in Arizona. Sixteen years ago, Bret Saberhagen (20-6) of the Royals squared off against Cardinal hurler John Tudor (21-8) in the Fall Classic finale at Kauffman Stadium. The four-year-old Diamondbacks, the youngest franchise to win a Fall Classic, end New York's string of three consecutive World Championships. Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling share the Series MVP honors. The Arizona pitchers are the first multiple winners since the Los Angeles Dodgers trio of Ron Cey, Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager shared the award in the 1981 World Series. Following the 2010 season, a panel of experts at the MLB Network will vote this game the 9th greatest game of the past fifty years. Birthday boy Dick Groat Born: November 4, 1930, Wilkinsburg, PA The acknowledged leader of the Pirates, Groat was a good-hitting shortstop with great range. He helped Pittsburgh to the World Series title in 1960, and after being dealt to St. Louis, played for their World Championship team in 1964. At Duke Univeristy, Groat was an All-American baskertball player who spurned offers to make professional basketball his career. In 1960 he was named National League Most Valuable Player, when he won the batting title. Best Season, 1960 groat staved off challengers to win the batting title with a .325 mark. He excelled at Forbes Field: batting .363 at home and .290 in road games. A singles hitters, Groat had just 32 extra-base hits, one of the lowest marks by an MVP winner, but he was sure-handed in the field, as usual. As he did much of his career, Groat hit well against southpaws: .376 in 178 at-bats. After he slumped in July, Groat responded by hitting .373 in August and .344 in September/October. On September 6, a Lew Burdette pitch broke Groat's wrist, sidelining the shortstop for nearly four weeks. He returned the last weekend of the year and played in the World Series. After his playing career, Banks became the first African-American to manage in the Major Leagues on May 8, 1973, when, as a coach, he took over for ejected manager Whitey Lockman during extra innings of a 3-2 win over the Padres in San Diego

Two doctors at the forefront of the COVID-19 fight, Greg Huhn and Ajay Nirula, tell us why Dr. Fauci is a legend, and Brandi Chastain takes some current women’s soccer stars to task. Former NFL receiver turned political commentator Donté Stallworth tells a Bill Belichick story with an unexpected twist. Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur gets grilled by an unlikely interviewer, former Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys coach Barry Switzer looks back on a drunken argument with Jerry Jones, and Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay tells Mike why he shouldn’t worry that rock icon Stephen Stills hates him.
Nick and Shawn talk about Justin Simmons signing his franchise tender and if the Broncos missed out on bringing back both of their safeties after letting the valuable Will Parks sign with Philly and not getting a long-term deal done with Simmons. Former Colorado Rockies outfielder Dante Bichette joins the show to talk about exciting times at the old Mile High and why it was the best place to play baseball. Bichette remembers his walk-off on Opening Day and his first days with the Rockies going up against Bret Saberhagen. Bichette decides how far this year’s Rockies team can go and notes that bullpen pitching can always be crucial in Colorado. Bichette says the Rockies are a slugging team with young Trevor Story and veteran Nolan Arenado making noise. Bichette says Rockies outfielders just need to grind it out in Coors Field and he trusts Charlie Blackmon to work it out and change his game. Shawn asks Nick about the Rockies scrimmaging and how Colorado might stack up in a shortened season with Matt Kemp and without Ian Desmond. Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. Before Nate Silver borrowed his last name as an acronym for his baseball projection system, Bill Pecota was the quintessential utility player. He moved between AAA and the majors for the Royals so often, his teammates nicknamed him “I-29” after the interstate between Omaha and Kansas City. Pecota was coming off a career year in 1991, when the Mets were looking to salvage some last glory days out of a 1980s near-dynasty running on fumes. He came to the Mets as a piece in a huge trade for Bret Saberhagen and—like the Mets franchise—had an incredibly disappointing 1992 season. Though he did manage to make a footnote in Mets history as the first position player to ever toe the rubber. Former Kansas City Royals Mike Sweeney, Reggie Sanders, Bret Saberhagen and Hall of Famer George Brett flew to the Middle East as part of a USO tour in September of 2018. The behind the scenes look at what makes U.S. troops operate as a winning team included visits to multiple bases, highlighted by hundreds of service members gathered with the former players to watch a Royals game via satellite on September 11th for a night of baseball, food, camaraderie and stories. The gathering actually took place at 3am local time on September 12th and led to an incredible synergy between all involved.
Long before he became an NBA champion as a player and coach, baseball was Steve Kerr's best sport. In high school he twice pitched at Dodger Stadium in city championship games — once on the wrong end of Bret Saberhagen's no-hitter. To this day he roots for the Dodgers, but as an East Bay resident, he says he'd love to go to games at a new A's ballpark. San Francisco Chronicle national baseball writer John Shea sits down with Kerr to talk ball. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Welcome back to Amazin’ Avenue Audio, where we talk about, of all things, Burning Man. First up, former Met and Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen joins the show to discuss his time in New York, the changes in the game since he played, and what he thinks of the Mets' current starting pitching. (1:12) Next, Steve Sypa goes over the final Minor League players of the week for 2018. (19:56) Brian Salvatore and Rob Wolff discuss the recent run of great starting pitching, as well as the plan for David Wright. (34:45) Finally, Allison McCague brings us an exceptionally pleasant version of the Nimmometer and the deGrometer, including a game where Brandon Nimmo and Jacob deGrom combined for practically the entire win.
