It probably strange to think of a time when the security of the President of the United States wasn't a top priority. That time would be right around five days after the Civil War ended with the surrender of Robert E Lee and his confederate forces. It should have been a time of rebuilding and healing as a nation, but a man named John Wilkes Booth (you may have heard of him) took it upon himself (maybe?) to avenge the defeat of the south by killing the man who lead the Union to victory. The plot to kill Abraham Lincoln is much more complex than anything they taught us in grade school.  Lincoln was just the centerpiece of a plan to destabilize the government by killing multiple political figures all at the same time. Join us as we dive deep into the murder of The Man that Saved the Union.

THE SIDNEY ST. JAMES SHOW

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2022 45:30

Season 3 Episode 8 Who Really Shot Abraham Lincoln at the Ford Theater? Bam!!! The other shot heard around the world. The Civil War in America had just ended, and all the major newspapers around the North and South began printing their stories. However, when the dust cleared enough to see, John Wilkes Booth was designated the fall guy of this historical event. Hello everyone, Sidney St. James here with my podcast on writing the Abraham Lincoln Assassination Series several years ago. Some of you have learned that I have got this niche of being able to go back in time "in my virtual time machine" and put myself in peoples' shoes. I did this many times in my genealogy studies and did this when I wrote the five-book series on the Lincoln Assassination. It was the evening of April 14, 1865. According to the Northern newspapers, the War Between the States had ended, and Washington City celebrated. President Abraham Lincoln entered the balcony at Ford's Theater to a standing ovation: a sign of a return to everyday life in America. The following morning, just a few minutes before 7:30, President Abe Lincoln was dead, and assassin J. Wilkes Booth became one of the, if not THE most, infamous figures in all U. S. history. But now, 157 years since the one-shot from a derringer pistol, conspiracy theories still abound in America. I suppose you can say it was one of the most egregious "fake news" cover-ups in all of American history. "What if I were to come right out and tell you John Wilkes Booth didn't fire the gun that killed President Lincoln? What if I was to say to you he actually died in Oklahoma many, many years later? What if I tell you the Secretary of War was secretly in on the plot to kill the President? What if I were to tell you the Catholic Church was knee-deep in all of it from the start? All these questions come from the writing of the actual court transcripts and autopsy reports, and other items of interest in a five-book series, "The Lincoln Assassination Series." Since going to college in my early days, I have been a historian. I love history, either from the Bible or our own American History. Although I majored in History at A&M for a few semesters, I graduated without a degree in that field, but I still remain very interested in the Assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. My 5-book series, which would be 6 books, began at President Lincoln's bedside when he passed away on April 15, 1865, at 7:22 in the morning. I know you might go out and find that there is not a sixth novel. This is because I elected to not write the one on the conspiracy theories. However, I will say there is much evidence in all the digital archives that will make you think that there was more to only one man pulling the trigger on a single-shot derringer pistol! In my review of the piles of digital archives when investigating the President's death and going over eyewitness reports to write the original five novels, there are actually pieces of this evidence that going reveals a "secret shooter" and cover-up that stretches from Washington City all the way to the Catholic Church. So, thank's for joining me today as I discuss briefly the many areas that don't make sense… there's still more to the story! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sidneystjames/message

Pandit Das himself appointed Rachna to be Co-Director of the Chhandam School in 2009 (along with Seibi Lee). Rachna worked tirelessly under Pandit Das to institutionalize curriculum, build infrastructure, train teachers, direct school-wide dance dramas, and flourish the school into one of the world's leading and most influential academies of North Indian classical dance. Her passion and commitment to her own journey of the art and to building pride of Indian classical art amongst the South Asian community led her to emerge as a powerful role model amongst the Indian diaspora. In particular, Rachna has exceptional talent in teaching and training youth, making the art relevant, inspiring, and empowering to girls. Rachna was the successor to Pandit Das as Co-Artistic Director of the Chhandam School and Artistic Director of the Chhandam Youth Dance Company (now the Leela Youth Dance Company), shepherding excellence, leadership, and creative discovery amongst teens. Rachna has also taught numerous kathak workshops, after-school programs, and outreach events/residencies to communities of all backgrounds, including at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, Treme Center of New Orleans, Conservatory of Arts in Miami, Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, LA Tap Fest at Debbie Allen Dance Academy, National Center for Kathak Dance in New Delhi, and many more. Currently, Rachna is leading and directing Leela New York, the newest chapter of Leela Institute of Kathak, bringing the teachings of her lineage for the first time to the greater New York Metro area. The Kathak Podcast : Kathak Ka Chakkar

Episode Notes Seibi Lee: Leela Dance Collective Founding Artist, Artistic Director Seibi Lee is a consummate kathak artist known for her powerful mastery, refined musicality, and dramatic brilliance in character portrayal. Seibi is a distinguished disciple of the iconic kathak legend Pandit Chitresh Das. She is a founding artist at Leela Dance Collective and Dean at Leela San Francisco. Seibi has toured worldwide earning accolades and deep respect for her artistry. She received an Isadora Duncan Dance Special Award as part of the performing ensemble in Das's East As Center and received two subsequent nominations for performances in Pancha Jati and Shabd. As principal dancer of the Chitresh Das Dance Company, Seibi evolved a singular perspective and style through the development of virtuosic character roles in several of Das's critically acclaimed works: the scheming maidservant Mantara in Ramayana, the dual roles of the tormented demon Marich and beloved tribal prince Hanuman in Sita Haran, the belligerent General in Darbar, and in Das's final work, the electrifying Guru in Shiva. Her outstanding portrayal of Hanuman became the inspiration for the central character and creation of Leela Dance Collective's Son of the Wind – the full-length dance drama bringing to life Hanuman's rarely told heroic and valorous adventures from the epic Ramayana. Son of the Wind premiered at the Green Center in Sonoma in 2017, was featured at ODC Theatre in San Francisco in 2018, and in 2019 presented at the prestigious Royal Opera House in Mumbai, India and the Ford Theater in Hollywood. Seibi has a profound passion for the expansive philosophy, dynamic range, and sophisticated rhythmic mathematics integral to kathak and is dedicated to bringing this art form to the world. Highly regarded for her teaching, Seibi has mentored many generations of dancers and in 2016, she was recognized by The Alliance of California Traditional Arts as Master Artist. She has produced several featured shows including Pacific Pathways, Aarambh, and Harvest Moon Festival. Seibi continues to forge her own unique path within the artistic tradition and, with the support of both the Haas Foundation and a 2-year Artist in Residence with the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, conceived and choreographed the mesmerizing solo work Houyi and Chang'e, – the heart-rending tale of great heroism and of tragically star-crossed lovers. “Seibi Lee in the double roles of Marich, the retired roué, and as Hanuman, minister to Sugreeva, the wronged prince of the Monkeys, was magnificent” Rita Feliciano, Dance View “As the Indian general, Seibi Lee drew a clear character arc from subject to betrayer to fool, a remarkable achievement.” Claudia Bauer, SFGate ""Son of the Wind", a spectacular retelling of Ramyana episodes centered on Hanuman...I was struck both by the production's sophisticated conception and by the professionalism of its execution by an all-female cast of seventeen dancers. With its technical brilliance, emotional power, and reverent yet creative reinterpretation of sacred epic, 'Son of the Wind', staged by american women of a variety of ethnic backgrounds, was a world-class transnational dance theater that celebrated Indian performance traditions even as it innovated within them and challenged cultural stereotypes."   At first listen, theBABAorchestra works immediately to enlighten the percipient that LA Jazz is not all studio polish, R&B, and smooth.  In fact there are many examples that disavow that notion, but [Lauren] Elizabeth Baba’s 17-Piece experimental big band is particularly visceral and thematic in its through-composed and improvised moments.   The conductor/composer/arranger of its namesake, [Lauren] Elizabeth Baba is a violinist, violist, and improviser living in Los Angeles specializing in performing and composing creative improvised music as well as jazz, classical, folk, avant-guarde, chamber, pop, and experimental styles.     Inspired by Baba’s family immigration story, hailing from Syria and Greece, she introduces us to Marigold- a piece that was commissioned by Los Angeles Jazz Society through a 2018 New Note Artist Award and premiered in concert at 2018 Angel City Jazz Festival at Ford Theater, Los Angeles, CA.     As her website informs, Marigold was recorded live in the studio – a 45-minute un-doctored real-time performance – presented as a long-form suite in 4 continuous movements; representing the nature of Marigold’s conception as “a loop – no beginning or end – exploring through-composition + improvisation and continuing the search to conceptualize time + music + existence – understanding that the past, present, and future are simultaneous experiences.”   This all being a direct reaction to Baba exploring her own family’s journey, and what it means to confront the bravery, heartache, ambition, and  reinvention of the immigration experience.  A story that carries parallels for many families in our diverse, multi-cultural nation, that offers a promise of fulfilling dreams for those arriving at its shores, but not always acknowledging the sacrifice that can weigh heavily on the elders who took on that expedition; either by choice or necessity.     An immersive listening experience is recommended on its own with Marigold.  In the meantime, [Lauren] Elizabeth Baba speaks with OTSSFO about her research, creative exploration, and emotional mining that led to its result.   NOTE: This is Part 1 of a 2-Part conversation with [Lauren] Elizabeth Baba.  The first is our more recent discussion regarding 2019’s release of Marigold.  While, Part 2 is comprised of an archived discussion pertaining to more of Baba’s creative and musical development, upbringing, and insights into theBABAorchestra’s 2017 release, Another Ride on the Elephant Slide.  Stay tuned for Part 2 coming soon.   Tracks featured throughout Episode #016: Marigold - theBABAorchestra - Marigold More Information: https://www.laurenelizabethbaba.com https://thebabaorchestra.bandcamp.com

Invertigo Dance Theatre was recently named by Dance Spirit Magazine as one of the “top six trend-setting companies to watch in LA.” Founded by choreographer Laura Karlin, Invertigo uses dance to tell compelling stories and create deep connections with communities. One of the most fascinating aspects of Invertigo is that they perform with live musicians, and even use musicians who double as dancers in their productions. One of my goals with this show is to bridge boundaries and showcase a wide variety of musical styles and perspectives. As a musician, it's easy to overlook the symbiotic relationship between music and the movement arts. To that end, I'm delighted to present this interview with Laura Karlin and my first inside look at the inner workings of a dance company, Invertigo Dance Theatre, with their innovative use of live music and musicians as integral components of their performances. Their upcoming production of “After It Happened”, a piece inspired by the aftermath of the Haiti Earthquake, and set to premiere at the Ford Theater in Los Angeles this Friday, Sept. 30. (Listen to audio here)I had many discussions about creating media with my family this past week during my visit to the cold East Coast of the United States of America.  What we always decided was to always go through the motions of creating and not to worry about what will come of it.I had at least one coffee every day there.  One cup was not from Starbucks.  It might as well have been, except it was in downtown D.C. where we sat inside at a cramped table with a giant wall-window view of the street-corner intersection.  We watched men and women walk by in P-coats as taxis almost hit them when they crossed the street so they flipped the taxis the bird.I always take the lid off the to-go cup so the coffee has time to cool before it hits my lips.  The froth was rippling on the surface of the drink more than I had ever noticed.  Swirls of small paisley patterns whipped fountains of steam into the cool room temperature.  When we left, the fahrenheit of the coffee was low enough that I was able to chug it down so we could enter the Ford Theater to watch "A Christmas Carol."

You Are There - Imagine if CBS radio news existed when the Bastille was stormed in 1789, or if radio reporters were stationed in Ford Theater as Lincoln was assassinated, or again at the Battle of Gettysburg?  Indeed, such was the premise behind the CBS series, You Are There.  Audiences witnessed history through the present-tense accounts of newsmen allegedly witnessing historical events transpiring before their eyes. Don Hollenbeck and John Daley (known for his TV game show panelist appearances) played the lead anchors, while real-life newsman provided the remote commentaries as the dramas unfolded.  As show opened, an anchor would describe the present situation with "As it stands now…" and segue into commentaries, live remote feeds or analysis as the story unfurled. The show was well received, but perhaps was doomed to eventual failure in part due John Daly's emoting.  Bernard DeVoto in Harper Magazine lamented: "We have heard his (Daly) voice vibrate with the real emotion, and our memory of the real simply turns the imagined to ham."THIS EPISODE:January 2, 1949. Rinaldi, however, quickly fades from the picture as Catherine and Henry become involved in an elaborate game of seduction. Grieving the recent death of her fiancé, Catherine longs for love so deeply that she will settle for the illusion of it. Her passion, even though pretended, wakens a desire for emotional interaction in Henry, whom the war has left coolly detached and numb. When Henry is wounded on the battlefield, he is brought to a hospital in Milan to recover. Several doctors recommend that he stay in bed for six months and then undergo a necessary operation on his knee. Unable to accept such a long period of recovery, Henry finds a bold, garrulous surgeon named Dr. Valentini who agrees to operate immediately. Henry learns happily that Catherine has been transferred to Milan and begins his recuperation under her care.

The FORD THEATER, sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, presented hour long dramas first on NBC for one only season. The series moved to CBS for its second and last season. There were 39 NBC and 39 CBS hour- long shows (not verified). The show initially received an unfavorable review from the New York Times for poor script adaptation but was still highly rated for the actors' performance and overall production. The show was supposed to feature only original scripts but had to forgo that plan due to lack of quality material. The first season on NBC used radio actors under the direction of George Zachary. Martin Gabel announced the first show but was soon replaced by Kenneth Banghart. The second season, on CBS, used Hollywood screen actors in the lead roles, supported by radio actors. Fletcher Markle, who previously produced CBS's STUDIO ONE series, was the producer for the second season. Although a short series, it still has some of radio's best dramas. THIS EPISODE:October 29, 1948. CBS network, KNX, Los Angeles aircheck. "Of Human Bondage". Sponsored by: Ford, Bulova Watch (local). Don Hollenbeck and John Daley (known for his TV game show panelist appearances) played the lead anchors, while real-life newsman provided the remote commentaries as the dramas unfolded.  As show opened, an anchor would describe the present situation with "As it stands nowâ" and segue into commentaries, live remote feeds or analysis as the story unfurled. The show was well received, but perhaps was doomed to eventual failure in part due John Daly's emoting.  Bernard DeVoto in Harper Magazine lamented: "We have heard his (Daly) voice vibrate with the real emotion, and our memory of the real simply turns the imagined to ham."

In a small âNegroâ church in the South, Mr. Deshee (Charles H. Moore) sets out to teach his children the Bible. He begins with a pre-Creation fish fry, which is interrupted when the angel Gabriel (Wesley Hill) arrives and announces, âGangway! Gangway for de Lawd God Jehovah!â The Lawd God (Richard B. Harrison) enters, dressed in a Prince Albert coat, black trousers, and congress gaiters. The story then proceeds through the legends of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, Moses, and other Old Testament figures and continues up to the crucifixion of Jesus. Based on Roark Bradford's stories, the play was praised by Heywood Broun in the Telegram as âmore stirring than anything I have seen in the theatreâ and by Robert Littell in the World as âsimply and briefly one of the finest things that the theatre of our generation has seen . . . it will move you to tears and make you gasp with the simple beauty of the Old Testament pageantry.â Theatre historian William Torbert Leonard has called Gabriel's announcement âone of the greatest entrance cues ever written for the stage.â A revival in 1954 failed to run.

Benny plays a big band trumpeter who falls asleep and dreams he is an archangel, sent to destroy earth because persecution and hatred have soared out of control. A light-hearted, farcical approach to the apocolypse that's quite enjoyable, despite Benny's longstanding jokes about being ashamed of it. The plot involves the third trumpet player in the orchestra of a radio program, named the Paradise Coffee Program, who falls asleep listening to the reading of the advertisement: "The coffee that makes you sleep." He dreams he is the angel Athaniel, a trumpeter in the orchestra of heaven, who is such a terrible musician he is relieved of his position and sent on a mission to earth. He is entrusted to blow the Last Trumpet at midnight, but complications in the plot ensue when two fallen angels, named Osidro and Doremus, want to continue their physical existence of pursuing pleasures. While Athaniel encounters experiences of mortal life, such as eating food and the need for money, the fallen angels try to prevent Athaniel from going through with his mission by having his trumpet stolen.

A rather long podcast this week as I look at big budget radio programs. The Ford Theater was Ford's second big budget program from the forties. This one was ambitious and no expense was spared. The dramas cast big name talent and ran for sixty minutes with minimal commercial time. Episode 8 of "The Clan of the Fiery Cross."
