In this engaging episode restaurateur, music promoter, and local legend  Chris 'Shaggy' Davis welcomes Tales From The Green Room and  listeners to  Day 2 of the 10th annual NOLA Crawfish Festival, a celebration that marries New Orleans' rich musical heritage with its vibrant culinary culture held at The Broadside New Orleans. The episode features an interview with rising star keyboard player/vocalist/singer song-writer, and band leader, 15-year-old River Eckert and his father, Jake Eckert. Father and son reflect on their musical journeys, from River's early days learning jazz and blues to Jake's extensive experience with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and his current gig with The New Orleans Suspects. The conversation, recorded after River's appearance at the NOLA Crawfish Festival and an hour before his next gig playing with George Porter, Jr., delves into the significance of familial legacy in New Orleans music, personal anecdotes about growing up around legendary musicians, and the impact of the city's supportive musical community. A special guest appearance by Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All-Stars and Crawfish Fest stalwart) adds to the rich tapestry of stories, illustrating the unique cultural ecosystem of New Orleans, with Luther revealing the secret to his improvisational skills.  Additionally, Shaggy shares his personal history, from boiling crawfish in his backyard to founding Crawfish King (the episode's presenting sponsor along with Cochon King BBQ), and offers insight into the festival's evolution and his friendship with Dave Matthews.Episode Photo Gallery by Chris Applebaum Images – 4/29/25 at The Crawfish Festival, Including Photos from Episode 33 with The Rumble and an upcoming episode with Joe Marcinek and Rick King (NOLA Dead Funk Summit)HIGHLIGHTS To be honest, what I do, what I really get paid to do at the highest level and what I did with Phil Lesh, or what I did with the Black Crowes, or whatever, like high end, high octane stuff, fearless improvisation, I learned at The Maple Leaf. . Johnny (Vidacovich) and George (Porter) taught me how to roll…I'd show up with songs and set lists, but they didn't want that man. They didn't even want songs. They just wanted to improvise for two full sets. And it would scare me to death. But I learned how to do it, man. And that's the real juice.I have a huge debt to the  New Orleans culture.                                                                                                   -Luther Dickinson on his relationship with New Orleans It's not ever annoying to hang out with older people because they're the ones with the knowledge. I'm my age and my generation's the one who's learning in the present moment. So when I'm around all those guys, it's just I soak up any information that I can possibly get. -River Eckert on being 15 and hanging out with older guys in the music sceneThere's a lot of music in the family. My great-grandmother and great grandfather. My great grandmother was a well-known vaudeville musician, And they were really menstrual types and well known at the time, Goldie Green and Bart Green and that was way back, silent movies, you know. Every department store, every function. That was before sound and movies. So they kind of got going like that. I tracked my grandmother all around and learned that lifestyle. My grandmother said to me before she passed, she said, you know, you got the blessing and the curse!-Jake Eckert on growing up in a musical family.I started just having backyard boils outside of the fairgrounds. I was close with all the New Orleans musicians. I'm lucky to call 'em friends.  So I used to say, hey, come play in this backyard…do a cheap ticket, all you can eat, crawfish kind of thing. And we'd get anyone from Anders Osborne to George Porter. It was just always cool. Put food and music together. It's kind of my jam.-Chris “Shaggy” Davis on the origins of the NOLA Crawfish FestivalLINKShttps://www.rivereckert.com/River Eckert YouTube Playlisthttps://neworleanssuspects.com/https://www.facebook.com/nolacrawfishfestivalhttps://www.lutherdickinson.com/https://broadsidenola.com/https://www.mapleleafbar.com/MUSICStack-A-Lee | River Eckert - with George Porter Jr, Terence Higgins, and John FohlRiver Eckert Music YouTube ChannelThe Black Crowes LIVE: Luther Dickinson's 'Ozone Mama' Solo on a Dubreuille Classic livedownloads  YouTube Channel          Polytoxic w Jake Eckert "Do What You Gotta Do" 4/14/2012 @ Quixotes 400 Watt Room, DenverWspanicbrad YouTube ChannelSPONSOR LINKSNOLA Crawfish King – Seafood & CateringCochon King BBQSpecial thanks to Luther Dickinson, Nick Burlison & Chris Applebaum/Applebaum Images

The Rev. Shawn Amos has had an extraordinary life and career in the music business. His father Wally Amos, best known as the delicious genius behind the Famous Amos cookie brand, was also a successful talent scout (the first black talent scout in the country to be exact) working with the likes of Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Simon & Garfunkel and many more. So you could say that the music business is in Shawn's blood. Shawn forged his own path, working his way up as an A&R man for Shout! Factory! and Rhino Records. Among the many great artists he worked on records with include soul singer Solomon Burke, Herb Alpert, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Matthew Sweet, and the late great Quincy Jones, who sadly passed away shortly after we recorded this interview. Also an acclaimed author, Shawn's book "Cookies & Milk" was awarded the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Youth/Teens! And on top of all that Shawn is a accomplished blues musician and singer/songwriter. His latest albums include the funk-inspired joyful blues album "Soul Brother No. 1" and a live album of 13 Rev classics entitled, "Vivir En España". Recorded on a recent tour of Spain. We get into all that and more in this fascinating conversation with The Rev. Shawn Amos. www.shawnamos.com . . Before she was born, Lewis' mother was told her baby probably wouldn't survive due to lung trouble, so the fact that Lewis now makes a living singing with those same lungs is a gift she never takes for granted. Lewis uses her voice to bring what she calls sacred songs into profane spaces, and though she's abandoned trying to define her sound, she hopes her audiences leave shows knowing two things: that they are brilliant as they are, and that they have the ability to use that brilliance to make a better world. Trained as an opera singer and classical pianist, Georgia native Lewis has been a composer, producer and performer for over two decades. After carving out space as an African American queer woman of size, Lewis' career has culminated in her album Americana being a top pick everywhere from NPR's All Songs Considered to Rolling Stone.  The FolkRockDiva is a musical polyglot who glides easily between folk, roots, country soul, gospel, and jazz, and has integrated New Orleans traditions by singing lead for Dirty Dozen Brass Band founding member Kirk Joseph's Backyard Groove. Lewis' Louisiana Red Hot Records releases include The Henderson Sessions, We Belong, and Americana. Laurel spent 8 years at Capitol Records, 3.5 years at Red Light Management and 6 years as an independent manager. During her tenure at Capitol Records, Laurel ushered in bands such as Interpol, The Decemberists, Shout Out Louds, Fischerspooner, Sparklehorse, and LCD Soundsystem. During her tenure at Capitol Laurel realized there were many bands that she was passionate about that belonged nowhere near a major label. With two partners, launched Cold Sweat Records/Caroline. From that label, No Age(WIVES), Battles, Health, Devendra Banhart, Yahowa 13, and many others were discovered and released. Laurel along with 3 others, opened the LA office of Redlight Mgmt, brought The Decemberists and Alberta Cross, and worked on Chris Cornell's solo effort. As an independent manager, Laurel managed: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (Mammoth), The Descendents, ALL(Epitaph), GWAR(Metal Blade), The Paladins (4AD) Plastilina Mosh (Capitol). Laurel helped develop fan bases for these bands with branded tours & creative marketing ideas (ie: comic book in-stores for GWAR, shows on cruise ships for Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Descendent's “Caffeine Nation Tour” – which did not allow any beer sponsors or corporate posters in the venue, etc.), An orchestra tour with The Decemberists (largest audiences the band had played to). Earlier in her career, Laurel also scouted for The Sony WORK group, where she was involved in the album set up for artists such as Fiona Apple, Jennifer Lopez, Jamiroquai & Eagle Eye Cherry. Currently managing: U.S. Girls (4AD/Beggars), Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith (Ghostly Int/Secretly Canadian), Red Fang (Relapse/Orchard), The Album Leaf(Nettwerk), The Session aka Christian James Hand

Please join us in welcoming Lilli Lewis into our studio to chat with Heart of Indie Radio Co-Host Emme Lentino. As the story goes, Lilli Lewis should never have been. Powerhouse singer-songwriter Lilli Lewis has announced her 2022 tour, including dates at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Folk Alliance International Conference, and The Kennedy Center which has called her: “A powerhouse performer adding her unique voice and talent to the national discussion of the state of social justice in America.” Spotify> https://open.spotify.com/artist/2dh2iaRf6yHgqVmEJok53L

Certain musicians like to do one thing over and over again. Others, like Elvis Costello, keep reinventing themselves or, at the very least, like to experiment with the many sides of the musical talent they were born with. Looking back at Costello's career it seems like his sense of adventurous restlenesses has been both the cause and the effect of his many high-profile collaborations, including those in the jazz world - from Michael Leonhart to Roy Nathanson, from the Mingus legacy project to the New Orleans connections, and more - that we explore here. On this week’s episode of Eric Krasno Plus One, Kraz is joined by keyboard wizard John Medeski, who’s sensational playing with Medeski, Martin, & Wood has been a staple in the auditory diet of avid listeners for decades. One of the few true virtuosos of our time, Medeski has been dropping jaws and blowing minds ever since MMW formed in 1991. Outside of his wild musical manipulations of time in space with MMW, Medeski has also worked with Iggy Pop, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Trey Anastasio, Robert Randolph, and many more legendary artists. In this conversation, Kraz and Medeski dive right in and talk about a range of topics including playing with John Scofield, mimicking Hendrix on the organ, overcoming cluster headaches, and “the unexplainable” in improvisational music. Medeski shares with listeners the wisdom he’s learned from a lifetime of musicianship, and it is both refreshing and inspiring to hear his thoughtful approach to his craft. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Get Right Band over Zoom video! The Get Right Band released their fifth album on May 23, 2020. Itchy Soul explodes with fresh ideas and original production--voices fade into synths, drums distort and echo through space, crunchy guitars twist and bend and rage, the bass is one moment heavy and driving, the next hypnotic and groovy. The Get Right Band filters 60's/70's psychedelia and 90's alternative rock through a modern lens--as if Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana co-wrote an album produced by Danger Mouse and Dan Auerbach. There’s a new level of maturity and confidence to GRB’s fifth release. This is all-in, maximalist rock n’ roll for grown up people (kids and adults alike) who know the world is falling apart, who know social media is rotting our brains, who know politicians are taking away our rights, and who know that art and beauty and music and love and action are the antidotes. Itchy Soul will make you remember the power of music. In the first few weeks of its release, Itchy Soul has been featured on WTF with Marc Maron, Live For Live Music, and tastemaker radio stations like KEXP, WTMD, and WNCW. Eschewing the trappings and limitations of conventional recording approaches, The Get Right Band recorded and mixed the majority of the record outside of a studio. Programs had to be learned, gear bought and borrowed, techniques trial and errored. In giving themselves the time and freedom to experiment, to obsess over sounds, and to record exactly what, when, and how they wanted, they made something singular and compelling. The album features a collaboration with comedian and podcaster Marc Maron on the gritty, existential track “However Broken It Is.” After many hours in the van listening to Maron’s WTF podcast, GRB started collecting particularly poetic quotes and eventually turned them into a co-written song with Maron. Even the album cover stands out as something unique and creative--it’s augmented reality art! Just download the app Artivive and point your phone at the cover to see the artwork come to life.Compared to their previous work, the new album moves one step closer to pop with catchy hooks and modern production, and one step closer to psychedelia with experimental effects and layers of sound--all the while bringing the very best of their signature high-energy indie rock. The end result is sure to resonate with fans of modern rockers like Arctic Monkeys, Cage The Elephant, and My Morning Jacket. The lyrics of Itchy Soul take on real world problems, from the very personal--the title track explores themes of self-acceptance, isolation, and agitation--to the very global--”Future Blood” is a climate change call-to-action with driving, distorted guitars. “Fire With Rain” combines danceable grooves with well-crafted poetry about the highs and lows of life as a traveling musician: “here we are hawking magic to the disbelieving masses, with a pink neon sign lit by vaudeville’s ashes--we fight fire with rain.” The Get Right Band’s origin story goes back to 1998, when singer/songwriter/guitarist Silas Durocher poached bassist/singer Jesse Gentry from another middle school band. A lifelong friendship and musical partnership developed (along with a quirky shared sense of humor and their own made up language), and the two formed The Get Right Band in 2011. With the addition of Jian-Claude Mears, the group gained a jet engine, powerhouse drummer (and a new best friend), and stepped into the great tradition of genre-bending power trios. The Get Right Band has shared the stage with Everclear, UB40, Rusted Root, Dr. Dog, Smash Mouth, Lifehouse, Dawes, Ozomatli, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Victor Wooten. They have appeared on NPR’s World Cafe, Paste Studios, and Nashville’s Music City Roots television show, and have performed at major festivals and venues including The Fillmore, The Orange Peel, Brooklyn Bowl, Theatre of the Living Arts, The Hamilton, FloydFest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, StrangeCreek, and Riverbend Fest. We want to hear from you! We had the honor of spending some time with John discussing his evolution in music, what it’s like to create utterly improvisational music in, and for, the moment, music as prayers and the sacred nature of sound, the difference between producing music and playing it, his new album with Mad Skillet, and a whole lot more.Equally comfortable behind a Steinway grand piano, Hammond organ or any number of vintage keyboards, John Medeski is a highly sought after improviser and band leader whose projects range from work with John Zorn, The Word (Robert Randolph, North Mississippi Allstars), Phil Lesh, Don Was, John Scofield, Coheed & Cambria, Susana Baca, Sean Lennon, Marc Ribot, Irma Thomas, Blind Boys of Alabama, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and many more. Classically trained, Medeski grew up in Ft.Lauderdale, FL where as a teenager he played with Jaco Pastorius before heading north to attend the New England Conservatory. He released his first solo piano record, A Different Time, on Sony’s Okeh Records in 2013, and current projects include a new album in the works with his band MadSkillet (Terrence Higgins, Kirk Joseph, Will Bernard), and HUDSON (a collaboration with Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield & Larry Grenadier), plus a documentary on Medeski Martin & Wood.Listen to Mad Skillet on iTunes or anywhere you stream or download your tunes!Make sure to check out all of johnmedeski.com for tour news, merch, and more info.***THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY THE AMAZING AND INCREDIBLE SHOP TOUR BUS & DEFYNE PREMIUM CANNABIS!!!!*SHOP TOUR BUS:* Visit shoptourbus.com or @shoptourbus on IG and pick up some wonderfully creative and beautiful Grateful Dead inspired shirts/hoodies. While John Medeski fronts Mad Skillet, an interesting four piece borne out of New Orleans jams, the project is certainly a sum of its of it’s parts. The band includes the under appreciated Will Bernard on guitar and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band rhythm section featuring sousaphonist Kirk Joseph and Terence Higgins on Drums. It’s a very cool project, one that I certainly would love to see live. I caught up with John Medeski fresh off a stint in Japan. I can’t begin to tell you what a thrill it was to talk to John, who is a freaking musical genius. Like you, I have been listening to Medeski, Martin and Wood since day one. Mad Skillet’s debut is a tremendous record, and when you do listen to it, make sure you tune everything else out, and pay close attention to the production, the instruments, and the passion with which each of the players play. Oh, and I know you will want to get up and dance. For Mad Skillet tour dates visit johnmedeski.com or find the band on Facebook. The is the first full interview we're sharing from the trip, and it features Gregory Davis, founding member and trumpet player for the legendary Dirty Dozen Brass Band of New Orleans. Gregory sat with Fred and Kyle on the patio of the Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street. The band is celebrating forty remarkable years of music this year, and Gregory generously shares the history of how they came together and how their early days of rehearsal-like jam sessions blended the music of traditional brass bands,R & B, and jazz created the Dirty Dozen Brass Band as we know them.  They’re an ingenious mix, combining and enlivening traditional methods with a modern perspective and approach.  They’ve not only created an entire segment or style of music, they’ve also brought daylight to instruments and historical music that could’ve long since gone away. www.dirtydozenbrass.com @dirtydozenbrass

This week's show features a long-awaited chance for me to meet the Twin Cats, a band I have seen play live several times, and who is talked about as a major influence on many of our former guests (Shadyside Allstars, Blue Moon Revue, Original State of Mind, et al).  I was also warned ahead of time that this band can get a little crazy at times.  They definitely live up to that reputation.  Somewhere in the midst of the wisecracks and wild stories there is an interview, but it's probably the least interesting part of this show. In just a few short years, the Twin Cats have gone from busking in Broad Ripple, to playing festivals such as 10KLF, Summer Camp, and the F.U.N.K. Festival.  During that time they have shared the bill with some of the top touring acts in the country including The Greyboy Allstars, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rusted Root, and Here Come the Mummies.  When not hobknobbing with the bigwigs, they can still be found playing most of the great small venues here in town and are definitely worth checking out if you get the chance. Links referenced in the show:                The Twin Cats can be found here: | | | | .   Their latest CD, Thick (which, contrary to intention, did beat the show's release), was recorded at the Static Shack by Gary Meilke, , and Chris Dobbs, and is currently available at and . Pay attention - 19 minutes into the 'cast JoJo hooks up with the drummers and starts incessantly teasing a Big Chief jam. Dave follows suit, the horns get in synch and soon we have a giant Big Chief marching around the venue. That's a request of an anonymous listener! Then we have a special treat - a Barstools rap from July of 1986, six months before it appears in the setlists as a song! That Barstools rap segues into Coconuts, but I decided to switch things up and play the Coconuts encore of that Cleveland 1999 date. Then another treat - Cardboard Box. Thanks Chris Whitestone for the request. A rare Mikey instrumental... really love the tension that is built mid-way through that song. It seemed to fit perfectly as a segue into our next selection.Low Spark > Dream Song > Low Spark - this is the encore from a show in May of 1998 in Santa Barbara, CA. It takes some serious kahonas to slow things down and play Dream Song during an encore and this one does not disappoint. Thanks to Stuart Chandler for the request. No matter what some people say, Dream Song is one of my favorite encore songs. I find it gives me a physical and mental breather. Perhaps even a little head space to reflect.
