Newstalk's own, Simon Tierney joined Kieran Cuddihy for the series 'The Shopping Trolley Hotline'. The series will give listeners pause when they're filling their trolleys, to consider their options. This week Simon and Kieran take a look a some of the options for brown sauce on the shelves...
In the early 19th century the chef Antonin Carême included it in his list of the basic sauces of French cooking. In the early 20th century Auguste Escoffier named it as one of the five sauces at the core of France's cuisine
What's all this then? Everything is back to front on this week's episode. Instead of Eli, Paul is going to be the Super Taster in Off Brand/Brand Off. Can Paul pick out the HP Sauce amongst a few imitators? It's a proper saucy romp as there are surprises abound in this battle of the brown sauces! Later in the show, Gannon's Golden Games becomes Eli's Excellent Entertainments as it is Mr Silverman who has discovered the board game! They both get to dabble in a bit of nostalgia as they try to wrap their heads around the rules for the Dad's Army game, based on the very popular 1970s BBC sitcom. However, there is one draw back to having the hosts swap roles… Eli's is going to get a taste of his own medicine, and Paul's playing doctor! This week, Gilly chats about the Great British breakfast with Guardian writer, author and culinary detective, Felicity Cloake. Her latest book Red Sauce, Brown Sauce is her second foray into food-as-national-identity by bike; she toured France for her last book One More Croissant for the Road and found much more than a tasty bite in both. After years of Brexit, Covid conspiracies and partygate, Britain is a divided nation, and Felicity has prised it open even further as she investigates the biggest divide of them all: red sauce or brown. But her 2,388km cycle around Britain over 7 weeks which took her deeply into British food is a fascinating (and often hilarious) snapshot of Britain as she finds a country in transition with a food culture slipping right now into the pages of history. Episode 79 very much lived up to the eclectic aspirations I have for this show. I knew what was coming for the guest mix, so I kept things nice and varied in the first hour, with plenty of old bits, a good few new bits and one or two weird bits. Plenty of lesser known stuff and steering clear of the bangers for the most part. Reckon my last track might split the room a bit too…? In hour 2 I handed things over to Michael Brown AKA Brown Sauce, a DJ from Dorset who's now living in Cornwall. He was a resident DJ at The Nook cocktail Bar in Weymouth as well as hosting a 'Smooth Sounds' sunday show on local radio, and he Loves anything groovy and funky - from classics to little hidden gems! Michael's set is all over the place in the best possible sense, blending together all sorts into an immensely fun melting pot of styles. We've got reggae, hip hop, quirky beats, worldwide grooves, funk and more. It's expertly mixed together, but you have no idea what's coming next, and I love that. Finding the funk from different corners of the music world is exactly what this show is all about, and Brown Sauce has done us proud on this one. You can find more wonderfully eclectic mixes on Brown Sauce's Soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/brownsauceuk, and give the man a follow on the old Insta while you're at it - https://www.instagram.com/brownsauceuk/ Hope to see you in 2 weeks. Brown sauce, like many things in the UK, came from the spoils of empire. Also, like many things in the UK, it's become a lightning rod for endless debates about class, snobbery, and English identity. Where did brown sauce come from, and why does it occupy such a fraught space in Britain's public imagination?Writer and novelist Caroline O'Donoghue has just joined Prospect as a life columnist, where she will be reflecting on the big stories behind our supposedly “small” everyday objects. She joins this week's podcast to talk about the idea behind her column, and why she kicked it off with a reflection on the humble hero enlivening many an English plate: HP sauce. The tangy condiment has more to do with the Labour Party than you might think. This episode of Andy's Treasure Trove features two great fans of my podcast, Peter and Kath Hart of London. When my family and I were in London a few years ago, we spent a very pleasant day with them, I presented them with some Andy's Treasure Trove t-shirts, and recorded a short interview with Peter about things that he had mentioned during the day, including stories about his grandfather's experiences in the British film industry, and the small village of South Ascot where he grew up. He also tells us about some British condiments that you might want to seek out and try. Kath chimes in at the end, and we parted company with warmth in our hearts and some insights into England that only real Brits could provide. Have you ever stopped and wondered: Why aren't my problems more representative of 90's sitcoms? Hannah has the answer this week, and it's been spot-treated for sweat stains, steamed *and* pressed. Meanwhile Alexandra tackles a listener question by investigating the origins of removing leg hair, and Caroline realises that the entirety of the British class war can be boiled down to what you eat on your bacon sandwich, in a startling exposé on Brown Sauce. At the Women Who Code Mixer, we look at the worrying world of smart replying, plus in our Smart Lesson, special guest Lucy Vine confesses the secrets to surviving a hen party, in honour of her new book ‘What Fresh Hell?'.Contact: dumbwomenpod@gmail.comMusic by Harry Harris, logo design by Gavin Day. It's brown. It's sauce. It's brown sauce. Tom introduces Emily to his favourite condiment and a taste test ensues that leaves some apologetic results.
The eleventh episode of the podcast which asks: is anyone willing to swap a Fonz action figure for a ‘Shakin’ Stevens and the Sunsets – Heterosexual Rock n’ Roll’ badge? This episode, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, has been a bastard to put together, and the sound quality may be a bit manky at times - but oh, what a glistening slab of televisual spangliness awaits us. It’s a full-on Flags & Balloons TOTP, this one, overseen by the circular face of The Hairy Breakfast Brunch Bar (who has wisely been kept away from The Kids and is monitored at all times), and the air is ripe with the soggy Lycra tang of the universally-despised Zoo. But no matter – this episode is a veritable time capsule of the early 80s. Kool and The Gang drop the world’s most unwatchable video ever, which is danced to by another not-very-good troupe, Shakin’ Stevens places his white-shod foot upon the throat of the charts of the Eighties, DLT commands the BBC cameramen to stalk Claire Grogan at all times, The Stranglers look on in disgust at Zoo, and there’s the longest discussion of Brown Sauce ever conducted by three grown men. And Dollar. And Bucks Fizz. Al Needham is joined by Taylor Parkes and Simon Price for a solid examination of a glorious episode of The Pops, veering off to brag about who they’ve had a drink with, why you shouldn’t use Dettol to treat facial acne, seeing Morph laid out in a glass coffin, the declining standards of World Cup mascots, and getting battered on Top Of The Form because of Noel fucking Coward. And swearing. AND Chris Needham’s new record! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
