As Democrats are left wondering how their candidate could lose so badly, so decisively, to a man who is not only loathed by half the country but denounced by many of his former aides and cabinet members, there is one democratic strategist who predicted this long before Kamala was anointed as the party's nominee. Jeff Weaver was Bernie Sanders's campaign manager in 2016 and a senior advisor to Senator Dean Phillips's campaign for the Democratic presidential nominee just earlier this year. Jeff argues that the Harris campaign's rallying cry - the idea Democracy itself was on the ballot this election - was a losing strategy, and they ignored the bread and butter issues that would have spoken to the electorate and helped propel Kamala Harris to victory. If Democrats don't make serious changes to their policies and their messaging, they will face similar outcomes in the future. Donald Trump easily won reelection with the help of voters who were once considered bedrocks of the Democratic base. In this election, the former president managed to win over more working-class voters than in his 2016 campaign and made historic inroads with nonwhite voters. Why did this happen — and how can Democrats win them back?Today on Lever Time, senior podcast producer Arjun Singh sits down with political analyst Krystal Ball, host of the show Breaking Points, to discuss why Trump's authoritarian, populist rhetoric may have struck a chord with voters. Then David Sirota speaks with Jeff Weaver, architect of Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) two presidential runs, to hear how Sanders built a similar multiracial coalition of working class voters during his campaigns and why those voters may have now migrated to Trump.Have a comment or a pitch about the show? Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the presidential race sent shockwaves across the US - and indeed much of the world - as the Democrats are scrambling to figure out their next move just three months away from the general election. And while it looks like Kamala Harris will be the nominee for the Democrats, there is still a lot of uncertainty around her candidacy and how she will fare on the national stage. To help us make sense of this unprecedented political moment, we're joined by Jeff Weaver. Jeff has a deep understanding of how Washington politics works. He was Bernie Sanders's campaign manager in 2016, and a senior advisor to Dean Phillips's campaign for the Democratic presidential nominee earlier this year. He knows just about everyone in Washington, and the ins and outs of how campaigns are run - and won. How is it that the Democrats' main bulwark between America and a Trump regime is an impaired president whose White House reportedly tried to hide his decline? On this episode of Lever Time, we talk to the Democratic operative who first tried to sound the alarm to avert this disaster — and who then faced a “quiet throat-slitting” by party bosses. We also explore how Democrats are trying to blackmail voters with an impossible choice: vote for a struggling Biden or get Trump and the potential end of democracy.Democratic strategist Jeff Weaver ran the presidential primary campaign of U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips, the only elected Democrat who tried to challenge Joe Biden for the party's 2024 nomination. Weaver also ran Bernie Sanders' 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns. On this episode, Weaver details his and Phillips' experience when they tried to make sure voters knew about Biden's decline. Weaver also explains exactly how the party could select a new nominee if Biden decides to halt his campaign — and how Democratic powerbrokers might try to tilt the process at the Democratic convention.
It's always a blast when Alex Crisafulli (@alexcards79) joins the show and this time is no exception. Daniel (@C70) and Alex talk about the current team while they bludgeon their way to a win against the Red Sox. Have they missed their window of being able to support good pitching? Will this team be good, interestingly bad, or just bad? The guys also dip into their well of Cardinal memories, talking about Vince Coleman, Matt Morris, Dave Duncan, Jeff Weaver, and other players and teams from the past. Plus they discuss the leaked City Connect jerseys and talk about the balanced schedule in ways that probably won't surprise you. It's an extra-long show but that's just more goodness for you! “An elderly man with a poor memory”. That is how a special counsel report described Joe Biden, president of the United States. Public appearances of the President looking confused and forgetting important dates and names seem to support this finding. Some Democrats believe Biden's cognitive decline is a major liability that can no longer be ignored. With so much at stake in the 2024 election, and polls that are favouring Trump to win, it's time for Biden to step aside for a candidate that can take on Trump with the energy and mental vigour such a contest requires. Biden's supporters argue that his record as one of America's most effective presidents renders his age irrelevant. Unlike previous candidates, Biden has proven that he can form a winning coalition. The risk of replacing him this close to the election would all but guarantee his defeat and the ruin of American democracy at the hands of a President Trump. Arguing in favour of the resolution is Jeff Weaver. He was a senior advisor on Bernie Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign and he is currently serving as an advisor to Representative Dean Phillip's campaign to be the Democratic nominee. Arguing against the resolution is Jim Kessler. He's the Executive Vice President of Policy at Third Way, a Washington DC Democratic think tank. Shana East introduced an amendment to the Democratic Party Charter, entitled "Expanding Democracy by Increasing Voter Participation" detailing just some of the issues that took place during the 2020 Iowa Caucuses, where she served as a Precinct Captain for the Bernie Sanders campaign. She dropped two- and kept this one. She also witnessed Biden members of the committee call Bernie members children.

Jeff Weaver, senior portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments, discusses how the money-market fund business has changed as interest rates have climbed to where payouts are at levels not seen in decades, but cautions against going all-in on the short-term savings instruments because when a recession comes -- something he expects for 2024 -- investors who have not started to lengthen out the maturity of fixed income holdings will miss out on the solid longer-term rates available today. Also on the show, Tom Lydon of VettaFi looks at the strong consumer's shopping habits for his ETF of the Week, author Kerry Pechter of Retirement Income Journal discusses his revised version of 'Annuities for Dummies' and the way higher interest rates and inflation have changed the picture for annuity products, and Luke Babich of Clever Real Estate discusses their survey showing that Americans in the market for a home have some surprising misconceptions about the costs and responsibilities of buying and owning one.

Last week, Politico reported that several major progressive voices are confident that there will be a left challenger to Joe Biden. Jeff Weaver, Bernie's 2016 campaign manager, said it's a given, and names like Nina Turner and Marianne Williamson have been floated as possible candidates. However, much of the left is still skeptical of "dum dum" third party runs -- even as efforts like The Movement for a People's Party and the Andrew Yang's Forward Party reflect a growing interest in electoral alternatives outside of the two party system. This week, Brie spoke to two committed leftists who aren't so skeptical of the value of third parties -- Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges and Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant -- about what a third party run could look like, and why so much of the left remains hostile to having a serious conversation about electoralism alongside labor organizing efforts. Kshama also explains how she was able to defeat the Amazon-backed recall effort against her, and what it will take for the left to win at the federal level. Recent gubernatorial losses have left the Democratic Party shaken, concerned about how these disappointing election results will predict how the country votes in the 2022 midterms. Moderate strategists are pointing the finger at their progressive party members. By promoting unpopular policies on police, immigration, education, and gender politics, the progressive wing of the party is alienating its moderate base and pushing them towards the GOP. They argue that the left's tactics in government – holding important domestic bills hostage in a bid to pass a more progressive agenda – have weakened the party and frustrated independents. Progressives, meanwhile, believe that Democrats need to embrace bold policies in order to inspire the party base and deliver for working class voters, racial minorities and immigrants. Recent election losses are proof that the same tired playbook of centrist policies and priorities does not work. And it is moderate obstructionist Democrats, not progressives, who are standing in the way of Congress passing historic domestic legislation, frustrating voters and dividing the party. If the Democrats do not change course and embrace a bold agenda, they will lose the House and Senate in the 2022 midterms and the presidency soon after. Arguing for the motion is Jim Kessler, Vice President for Policy at Third Way, a Washington DC Democratic think tank Arguing against the motion is Jeff Weaver, campaign manager for Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign and senior advisor on Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign. QUOTES: JIM KESSLER "Voters in the middle of the country, they just don't trust Democrats enough to really give us strong majorities, because they think we're going to go off the deep end."
